Sussex Master Gardeners workshops start May 23

The Sussex County Master Gardeners will offer the following workshops in person at the Carvel Center, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown. Classes are free. Preregistration is required at udel.edu/0012068.

All About Tomatoes will meet at 12 p.m., Thursday, May 23. Master Gardeners Ana Dittel and Linda Peters will discuss types of tomatoes, growing conditions, fertilizing, pruning, pests and diseases during an in-person session in the garden.

Create a Certified Wildlife Habitat is set for 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 4. Attendees will learn the steps to create a certified wildlife habitat and whether it is suitable (pros and cons) for their landscape. Master Gardener Michele Walfred will share her experiences transforming a three-quarter-acre lot she now shares with local wildlife. For those attending virtually, an email with a Zoom link/phone number and handouts will be sent 24 hours prior to the workshop.

The Secret Life of Insects will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 6. Master Gardener Judy Pfister will explain what makes a bug an insect. Participants will learn how bees communicate by dancing, view insects up close with magnifying glasses, complete a pollinator field journal and take-home craft, and go on a scavenger hunt in the garden. 

Sussex County Master Gardeners will host A Day in the Garden from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday, June 22. There will be children’s activities, workshops, a pest walk, plant sale and more. To register, go to udel.edu/0012069.

Master Gardeners are working volunteers supported by Delaware Cooperative Extension through the University of Delaware and Delaware State University Extension offices. Any attendees who have special needs to be accommodated should notify the office two weeks prior to the event.
