Trail cleanup volunteers remind walkers to take away pet waste bags

In recognition of Earth Day, several members of the Reserves of Nassau Community gathered to clean up trash on the Georgetown Lewes Trail, spanning in both directions from the Nassau Road trailhead.

“We didn’t finish the entire sections, but we did cover a lot of ground, and it’s a noticeable improvement as I walk the trail every day,” said Chris Morrow.

Volunteers found a number of dog waste bags that were intentionally tossed into the brush and woods alongside the trail, he said.

“I counted at least 15 green bags in one area. Bags hanging from tree branches and stuck in the briars and some just left on the gravel. Some people didn’t clean up at all,” said Morrow.

“We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful trail to enjoy as well as our state parks. Throwing your dog's bag of feces into the woods or not cleaning up after your dog at all is environmentally unhealthy, unsightly, disrespectful, irresponsible and just plain lazy. And, just because the bags are marketed as eco-friendly or made from recycled plastic doesn’t mean it’s nature's job to clean up what you left behind.”
