Artisans fair to benefit scholarship funds May 25 in Ocean View

May 8, 2024

A long-standing local Memorial Day weekend tradition, the South Coastal Delaware AARP Artisans Fair is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 25, at Lord Baltimore Elementary School, 120 Atlantic Ave., Ocean View.

Sponsored by the South Coastal Delaware AARP Chapter 5226 Scholarship Committee, the fair will include an outdoor farmers market operating from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. New this year will be music provided by The Wave Dragons Band, a duo made up of Patrice Scully-Murray and Michael Drew, who will be performing from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m.

Arts and crafts will include paintings in oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media; photography; metal art objects; handcrafted jewelry; pottery; glass; wood; textiles; and home décor. The farmers market includes fresh produce, and other food and pet items.

Proceeds from the artisans fair and farmers market go toward the local AARP chapter’s scholarship fund, which each year awards college scholarships to Indian River High School seniors and adult students at Delaware Technical Community College.

“The artisans fair accomplishes several goals: It provides a venue for regional artisans to display and sell their creations, it offers the community an opportunity to gather for a fun event and it raises money to further the education of area youth,” said Ida Crist, artisans fair chair.

The fair has grown to nearly 75 exhibitors, both artisans and farmers market vendors. The artisans will be in the school’s cafeteria and gymnasium plus on the athletic field, where the farmers market will also be located.

The artisans fair will feature exhibitors who have been coming since the show was initiated along with several first-timers. One of the highlights is an opportunity to win works of art the exhibitors contribute for a raffle auction. Homemade baked items provided by volunteers from the 350-member AARP chapter will be for sale. Raffle tickets for a golf package from Bear Trap Dunes and a 50-50 cash split between the winner and the scholarship committee will also be offered. Cucina Veloce food truck be on site with offerings of fresh pasta, salads, sandwiches and beverages.

Fair admission and parking are free. For more information, call Ida Crist at 302-732-6336 or go to southcoastalaarp.org.
