The Cape comeback at Champions Stadium came up a goal short April 10, as the boys’ lacrosse team lost to The Hill School 17-16.

“I think we almost pulled off the greatest comeback win in boys’ lacrosse history,” said Cape coach Geoff Shupard. “We shut them out in the fourth quarter and had possession at the end with a chance to win the game.”

Cape trailed 17-9 entering the final period and started winning face-offs, getting stops and making goals.

A final left-handed low shot by Jack Schell sailed inches past the pipe.

Juniors Burke Healy (six) and Evan Burris (three) combined for nine goals, while Mason Trench stonewalled The Hill School with 13 real-deal saves, a few at point-blank range.

“The face-offs and defense enabled us to get back in the game,” said Healy, who added an assist.

“We always knew Burke and Burris were solid players, but they went off in this game,” said Shupard. “That is something we can build on. We are a tough team.”

Lefty Mike Guenther continues his stellar play with a six-point game – three goals and three assists. Single Cape goals were scored by Anderson Smith, Jack Schell, Brenner Short and Jack Huss.

Schell, Short and Hank Anderson each had one assist.

Scorers for The Hill School were Van Tanguay with five, Andrew Ahrens with four, Nick Blalock and Cliff Chapman with three each, Marcel Vernon with two and Mack Leonhartt, Hunter Falzon and Noah Macielag with one apiece. Carson Meredith had 14 saves.

Cape will play at Sussex Central at 11 a.m., Saturday April 13, before a big Henlopen Conference game at Caesar Rodney (5-1) Tuesday, April 16.
