Cape volleyball shuts out Sussex Academy 3-0

March 21, 2024

The Cape boys’ volleyball squad kicked off its 2024 season with a 3-0 shutout of Sussex Academy March 20 in Georgetown. The Vikings worked to a 25-10, 25-4, 25-10 victory over the Seahawks.

“Tonight was a really strong showing by our boys,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “One thing that concerned me heading into today was the consistency of our serving in practices. Tonight we really shined behind the service line; we attempted 59 serves and only missed 9 with 19 aces. A plus-10 ratio is always great.”

Bryce Patterson led the Vikings with seven kills and four aces. Tias Small knocked down five kills and five aces. Kieran Morrissey served five aces. Setter Talan Stephens garnered 11 assists. Blake Catts slammed five kills.

“I think we played really well,” said Catts. “We didn’t know what to think going into this match. But we surpassed all of our thoughts about how we would do tonight. Our serving was great. We were more versatile with our attacks, not just swinging, but also putting the ball where it needed to be.”

“I thought Talan and [Jason Harpel-Rickards] did a consistent job at distributing the ball off of free balls to keep all three attackers engaged,” Coupe said. “Blake Catts had a really strong game with some smart, quality swings that will continue to spur his growth. Kieran was just dialed in behind the service line and seemed really aware of his responsibility of applying steady and consistent pressure. I look forward to our tournament Saturday and seeing some quality Pennsylvania teams.”

Desmond Davis led the Seahawks with two kills and five digs. Emmanuel Charles-Aine had a kill and four digs. Jovan Jean Louis had two blocks.

“We knew it was going to be a tough match,” said Seahawks coach Hailee Gooch. “It was eye-opening for us. We learned we need more work. We can only improve from here on out.”
