Joseph F. Balback, loved family, outdoors

April 22, 2024

Joseph “Joe” F. Balback of Millsboro passed away peacefully Sunday, April 14, at Delaware Hospice, Milford.

Joe was born in Wilmington Dec. 26, 1945. He was a 1963 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He served in the Army from 1964-66.  After being honorably discharged, Joe worked for several years for Atlantic Aviation.

In 1968, Joe’s love for the outdoors led him to move to Sussex County.  He was employed at Indian River Power Plant for 33 years.  After retirement, he started a small business as a painter/handyman. He was excellent at this job.

When Joe’s sons were young, he became an enthusiastic Little League coach and umpire.  He was a loyal Philadelphia sports fan following his beloved Phillies and Eagles.

Joe was happiest when he was outdoors hunting. He was the founder of Double “00” Hunting Club, where he was a member for over 30 years. He taught his sons and many of their friends the love of the outdoors, and safe hunting skills.

However, the most beloved part of his life was his family and close friends. He was there for anyone who needed a helping hand.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, George and Anna Balback; brothers, George “Buck” Balback and Charles Balback; sister, Trish Booz; as well as several brothers-in-law.

Joe is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joan Balback; daughter, Tracy (Frank) Ramsay; sons, Joseph E. Balback and Jay (Laura) Balback; five grandchildren, Hannah Ramsay, Hayden Balback, Hayley Balback, Donavan Balback and Olivia Balback; one brother, Francis Balback; and two sisters, Lydia Macguire and Susanna Reinhold. He is also survived by special in-laws, Nancy Balback, Kathy Montejunas, and Mary and Ellis Kaufman; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to family and friends for their unending support, and Delaware Hospice staff for their spiritual and emotional help.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE  19963.
