‘Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story’ opens at RBFS Cinema Art Theater Jan. 26

January 24, 2018

Starting Friday, Jan. 26, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Cinema Art Theater will present “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story,” a fascinating documentary about the iconic actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr.

What do the most ravishingly beautiful actress of the 1930s and ‘40s and the inventor whose concepts were the basis of cellphone and bluetooth technology have in common? They are both Hedy Lamarr, the glamour icon whose ravishing visage was the inspiration for Snow White and Catwoman, and a technological trailblazer who perfected a radio system to throw Nazi torpedoes off course during WWII. Weaving interviews and clips with never-before-heard audio tapes of Hedy speaking on the record about her incredible life, the movie brings to light the story of an unusual and accomplished woman, spurned as too beautiful to be smart, but a role model to this day.

"What makes ‘Bombshell’ intriguing is not just Lamarr's gift for invention, it's also what a fiery individualist she was, someone who had no regrets about her eventful life ... not even its racy, tabloid elements," writes Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times. Michael Phillips of The Chicago Tribune adds that the film "rights a grievous wrong in the life, career, reputation and memory of a superstar. It fascinates both as film history and as a sobering reminder of how little credit a woman like Lamarr received, even at the peak of her popularity."

Screening times are 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 26; 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27; 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 28; 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 29; 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31; and 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1. Tickets can be purchased at the Cinema Art Theater, starting 30 minutes prior to each screening. Admission for a screening is $8 for RBFS members and $10 for future members. All screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater located at 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, behind the Lewes Wawa.
