A six-acre solar panel field is now providing power to Allen Harim's Harbeson poultry processing plant on Route 5.

The 1.57-megawatt project is estimated to supply the business with about 11 percent of its current energy needs, and is expected to generate 2.3 million kilowatts of power annually.

“This project is in line with our company's mission to do what's best for the environment,” said Allen Harim President and CEO Joe Moran.

The solar field, which is linked to Delmarva Power's grid, was developed by Pennsylvania-based Alternative Energy Development Group, and is owned and operated by Onyx Renewable Partners.

State and company officials celebrated the project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony May 15 and also revealed a new scholarship program for the children of Allen Harim growers and employees planning to attend college.

At the event, Alternative Energy Development Group founder and CEO Chris Fraga presented a $10,000 check from the company's Watts for Wishes scholarship program to establish the Allen Harim Legacy Scholarship Fund. Allen Harim will match the donation, and plans to use the energy savings from the solar field to grow the endowed fund and provide up to five $2,500 scholarships annually.
