Cape Henlopen High School Spanish teacher Dr. Estefania Becker recently had a wish fulfilled by Bethany Beach Books. She applied for the 2016 Giving Tree Award sponsored by Bethany Beach Books last October. The bookstore decided to help support local schools and teachers during the holiday season by soliciting donations from patrons, and then awarding wishes to deserving educators. It was the bookstore's fifth year to raise funds for teachers.
When Becker realized that she did not have enough books written in Spanish for her students, she submitted a grant for a classroom set of 35 “La Casa en Mango Street” books by Sandra Cisneros. Becker won her request and received her books at a reception held at Bethany Beach Books Feb. 7.
Becker will use the books as part of her Spanish curriculum. Becker said, "I never imagined I could be one of the award recipients. This is an important addition to our World Language Spanish curriculum and our library at Cape Henlopen High School. I want to thank Bethany Beach Books and their sponsors for granting me my book wish and supporting local teachers. I also want to thank Ms. Sue McKone, Cape Henlopen High School librarian, for her community involvement and support to teachers like me."
