Coupe pleased with volleyball play day

Young players step up for Cape squad
August 30, 2017

Cape hosted a nine-team play day Aug. 26, when teams from around the state battled to show their coaches what they could do in tough competition.

The Lady Vikings matched up with Newark Charter in the first scrimmage, where tough points were played by both squads.

“I'm really happy with how our girls progressed this week in comparing our two play days,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “We looked more composed and aware of each other.”

Wilmington Friends was the second opponent for the Vikings.

“I threw the players out there with different lineups throughout, and for the most part they responded well,” Coupe said.

Cape matched up with the Raiders of Ursuline next, and the seniors led the way with numerous blocks and knock-down kills by Sophia Spinelli, Logan Shuttleworth and Maddy Holt.

Delaware Military was next on the Vikings’ agenda followed by Conrad and Tower Hill.

“Our receive remains to be our Achilles heel,” said the third-year coach. “I'm happy to have another week before school starts to continue to iron out our kinks. Our freshmen class continues to shine, in particular, their fearlessness. I keep reiterating to them, and the team as a whole, that this is the time to take the chance and not be afraid of mistakes. I'm happy with aggressive errors, as they can be corrected. We as coaches can't correct the mistakes they're too afraid to even attempt.”

Schools competing during the daylong scrimmages were Conrad, Delaware Military Academy, Newark Charter, St. Georges Tech, Tatnall, Tower Hill, Ursuline Academy and Wilmington Friends.

Cape will host Delmarva Christian, Dover, St. Elizabeth, Caravel and Indian River for a play day scrimmage Saturday, Sept. 2. The Vikings will open the regular season Friday, Sept. 8, with an away match at Delmarva Christian.
