Dog saved after drifting to sea

State officers, Bethany firefighters rescue black lab
November 9, 2016

A black lab was saved over the weekend after being swept out to the ocean near the Indian River Inlet.

Shortly after 11 a.m., Nov. 6, the state Office of Animal Welfare Delaware Animal Services responded to a call that a 4-year-old black Labrador retriever named Cruz was swimming in the water about a mile south of the inlet when it was swept offshore about 500 yards, said Department of Health and Social Services spokeswoman Andrea Wojcik.

Animal-control officers requested back-up from the Bethany Beach Fire Department, which sent firefighters in wet suits on jet skis to retrieve the dog. When Cruz was brought back to shore, officers found him to be cold and tired, but in otherwise good health.

“Cruz was very happy and lucky to be rescued from the frigid water,” said animal services Capt. Reed Jones. “Dog owners should always use caution around water. Keeping dogs on a leash and under control of their owner is critical to their safety. Luckily, Cruz’s owners contacted Delaware Animal Services, and trained rescuers were able to get to him in time.”

The Office of Animal Welfare advises residents not to attempt to rescue animals, especially around cold water or ice. Animal-related emergencies can be reported to the 24-hour Delaware Animal Services hotline at 302-255-4646.
