Education is focus of Alliance for Racial Justice meeting July 11
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will present a program called It's All About Education at its meeting set for 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 11, at Trinity Faith Christian Center; 15516 New Road, Lewes. The program will feature an introduction to the alliance's new focus on education for the remainder of 2017 and beyond.
For the past year or so, SDARJ has presented standout programs focusing on the U.S. criminal justice system, which disproportionately impacts African-American men, and their families and communities. Now the focus will shift to education, and what can be done to make the public smarter about racism, to create more understanding and effect changes in attitudes and behaviors, and bring about racial justice in all institutions.
Presenter Dr. Aimee Wiest will address the alliance's education initiatives. She will review highlights of recent book group discussions, and she will provide upcoming selection titles for the remainder of 2017.
Wiest will highlight the African American Literature and History program for teens that is sponsored by Pathways for Success. With alliance support, the program will expand in the fall. She will also give an abbreviated presentation on African-American literature and history to provide a baseline of understanding of how African-Americans changed the world through actions, writings and music.
Wiest researched and developed a body of knowledge in African-American literature while she was a student at the University of Nairobi in Kenya, through Syracuse University. She has been teaching courses in African-American literature at Delaware State University for 10 years and has led the alliance's book discussion group since its inception.
