FFA Week goes local at Millsboro Middle School

March 7, 2016

The first National FFA Week was held in 1948, 68 years ago. National FFA Week is always held from Saturday to Saturday and always over George Washington’s birthday. The Millsboro Middle School FFA has held an FFA Week for the last three years since its induction as a chapter. From what has been accomplished in those three years, it seems like this chapter has been around much longer.

Despite having fewer than 100 members, everyone in the school, including staff members, participated in FFA Week events. Staff, students and members participated in spirit days such as '80s day; chapter tee day; camo/country day; red, white and blue day; and blue and gold day. National Blue and Corn Gold show both FFA spirit and school spirit, as those are the school’s colors.

Angelina Corrado, said ’’Being a first-year teacher, this showcase of school, community and morale was very rewarding to be a part of.” Members also participated in events like a bowling tournament hosted by Sussex Central High School FFA, volunteering at the Delaware Food Bank and bagging 578 bags of food for those in need, a teacher appreciation breakfast, and a member meeting and workshop with state officers FFA President Evan Davis and state FFA Vice President Jordan Carr.

At the teacher appreciation breakfast, students welcome, serve and cook for staff to show their gratitude for all the support they give. During FFA Week, the students also pulled together money to nominate teachers to kiss a pig during a school pep rally.

To eighth-grader Britney Smith, FFA Week means honoring how much FFA means in her life. First-year members also enjoyed FFA week. Payton Taliaferro, a first-year member said, “This year was the first time I’ve had FFA Week, and I was able to express my love for FFA and on Friday I got to show how much I care about my school and our colors.”

Susan Mitchell, the MMS FFA advisor, said, “It’s one week a year all chapters all over the nation can celebrate this youth leadership organization. It’s nice to share with non-members how amazing we are.” All in all, Millsboro Middle had a successful National FFA Week, and hopes to keep having FFA Week for years to come and keep educating the public about the FFA program.
