Golden Jubilee to bring retrievers to the beaches May 10-11

May 9, 2024

Dewey's Golden Jubilee will return to town Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11.

Hundreds of golden retrievers and their families will enjoy a weekend gathering that kicks off with the Gold Rush Parade at 6:30 p.m., Friday.  The procession will begin at Lake Gerar Park, work its way to Rehoboth Avenue and end with an ice cream social at 7:30 p.m., along with shopping and noshing at local eateries.

The Golden Beach Romp will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday on Van Dyke Avenue’s ocean beach. Fundraiser T-shirts will be available for pickup and purchase. Grooming demonstrations beginning at 9 a.m. To sign up for mini photo sessions, golden owners can find Dewey's Golden Jubilee on Facebook.

Mama Maria's in Dewey Beach will host a yappy hour from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday.

Also on Van Dyke Avenue beach, members can honor their pups who have gone to the Rainbow Bridge during a memorial bonfire starting at 7 p.m., preceded by a grooming demonstration at 6:30 p.m. All events are free, and all friendly dogs are welcome to join golden retriever lovers for a weekend of fun, surf, sand and goldens galore.

The event supports a great cause, the Morris Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, one of the largest, most comprehensive prospective canine health studies in the United States. The study’s purpose is to identify the nutritional, environmental, lifestyle and genetic risk factors for cancer and other diseases in dogs. Each year, with the help of veterinarians and dog owners, the foundation collects health, environmental and behavioral data on more than 3,000 enrolled golden retrievers.
