The inaugural Beach Goes Blue 5K, sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, took place June 4, kicking off the Beach Goes Blue weekend. Runners joined the fun with a nice 3.1-mile route along the ocean from the north end of the Boardwalk to Gordon's Pond and back to the Boardwalk.
The overall winner was Jon Sargeant from Avondale, Pa., in 21:10. Women's winner was Jocelyn Neill from Newark in 21:19. Neill was leading the race at mile one, but was overtaken at mile two by Sargeant. Runners-up were Doug Luzader of Washington, D.C., in 21:25 and Katy Mulligan from Springfield, Va., in 22:52.
Many wore blue T-shirts and the Neill family all wore tees letting everyone know that grandpa Don Neill turned 70 and was running his first 5K.
Carol Everhart, director of the chamber, helped pass out awards, which were in the shape of blue wooden dolphins. This event was a benefit for the Marine Education Research & Rehabilitation Institute in Lewes.
The next Races2Run event will be Sunday, June 12, at Made Ya Look on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth.
