New films to open May 3 at Cinema Art Theater

May 2, 2024

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present screenings of “The Boys in the Boat” and “The Beast” starting Friday, May 3, at Cinema Art Theater in Lewes.

An inspirational true story based on Daniel James Brown’s bestselling book of the same name, “Boys in the Boat” details the history of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. It follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.

The Beast” is a drama about lovers across space and time. In the year 2044, artificial intelligence controls all facets of a stoic society as humans routinely erase their feelings. Hoping to eliminate pain caused by their past-life romances, Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) continually falls in love with different incarnations of Louis (George MacKay). Will the process allow Gabrielle to fully connect with Louis in the present, or are the two doomed to repeat their previous fates? Bertrand Bonello directs the sci-fi epic inspired by Henry James' turn-of-the-century novella, suffused with mounting dread and a haunting sense of mystery. “The Beast” poignantly conveys humanity's struggle against dissociative identity and emotionless existence.

Admission is $9 for film society members, $11.50 for the general public and $5 for students, with student tickets only available at the box office.

For all screening times and dates, and to purchase tickets, go to rehobothfilm.com or visit the box office from 12 to 8 p.m., Wednesday to Friday.
