Sussex council meeting April 30

Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 30, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. 

Included on the agenda is discussion of a new ordinance to eliminate the positions of department head of emergency operations and department head of emergency medical services, and to create a new position of department head of public safety. 

Council is also scheduled to vote on a rezoning application from AR-1, agricultural-residential, to C-2, medium commercial district, filed by Reed Properties LLC for a 3-acre parcel at 14742 Gravel Hill Road west of Milton.

Rehoboth BoA hearing April 29

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Adjustment has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m., Monday, April 29. 

The agenda includes a continuation of the variance request for Coast Hotel, which is seeking to increase its current floor-to-area ratio of 2.24 to 2.89 to accommodate 10 additional hotel rooms. 

The agenda also includes a variance request from the property owners of 53 Sussex St., who are seeking an increase in area of 293 square feet over the allowable FAR.

The meeting will be conducted in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. A full agenda, meeting materials and a livestream are accessible at cityofrehoboth.civicweb.net. Bulk pick-up in Rehoboth to begin 

Rehoboth Beach’s spring bulk pickup service will take place on the south side the week of Monday, April 29, and on the north side the week of Monday, May 6. South side bulk pickup includes Schoolvue and Scarborough Avenue Ext.

Acceptable items include appliances, e-waste, universal waste, furniture and mattresses, pipes, lumber, tires, junk and lumber.

Items that will not be accepted include commercial waste, dirt, rocks and bricks, lawn/tree/shrub trimmings, glass panes, concrete, vehicle batteries, household garbage, hot ashes, heavy materials and hazardous waste.

Instructions for setting out bulk waste materials: place materials out no more than 24 hours before pickup; place materials in front of your property line and on the same side of the street; keep the bulk items pile clear of other objects, including cars; do not block sidewalks and traffic.

Lewes Housing panel to meet April 30

The Lewes Planning Commission’s Housing Subcommittee will meet at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 30 at the Rollins Center.

The agenda includes further discussion of accessory dwelling units.

GLF to hold annual meeting April 27

The Greater Lewes Foundation will hold its annual meeting at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 27 at the Rollins Center.

The group will update three GLF projects: restorations of the De Vries Monument and the Nassau School in Belltown; and status of the Fourth Street Preservation campaign.    

The family of the late Dr. Anis Saliba will also receive the GLF's annual Community Leader Award in his honor.

The meeting is open to the public.

DelDOT workshop set April 29

The Delaware Department of Transportation will have a series of public workshops to provide information on the 2040 Long-Range Transportation Plan. One of the workshops will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Monday, April 29, at the Georgetown Public Library, 123 Pine St. 

A virtual meeting via Zoom will take from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 21.

The 20-year plan guides the investment of public transportation funds for road projects. The plan is updated every five years, but adjustments may be made depending on local, state and federal funding.

SPC celebrating Arbor Day April 26

The Sussex Preservation Coalition will hold its second annual Arbor Day celebration from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, April 26, at Hudson Park, 18482 Cool Spring Road, near Milton and Harbeson.

The featured speaker will be Christophe Tulou, Delaware Center for the Inland Bays executive director. Other groups taking part include the Sierra Club, Delaware Habitat Guardians, Sussex Alliance for Responsible Growth and League of Women Voters. A swamp white oak will be planted in honor of Eul Lee, founder of Sussex 2023.

Route 24 intersection work to start

Robinsonville Road will be closed between Route 24 and Conleys Chapel Road beginning Monday, May 6. The closure is expected to continue through mid-August for Phase 1 of the Route 24 at Robinsonville Road/Angola Road intersection improvement project, which includes pavement widening to extend right- and left-turn lanes on all approaches of the intersection; realigning Robinsonville Road to Route 24; multimodal improvements including bike lanes, bus stop, sidewalks and crosswalks; lighting and drainage improvements.

For detours, motorists will use Route 24 to Hollymount Road to Beaver Dam Road to Conleys Chapel Road to Robinsonville Road.

Alderman, committee members named in Dewey Beach

Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously April 12 to appoint Ronda McIntyre for a two-year term as town alderman. 

Council also voted to appoint Jimmy O’Conor to a three-year term on the planning and zoning commission, Rick Hardy and David Vogt to three-year terms on the board of adjustment, and Vogt to a one-year term on the audit committee.
