Raubacher Retrospective opens at Rehoboth Art League Sept. 8
The Rehoboth Art League will host a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8, for four new exhibitions which include a major retrospective of Delaware artist Rebecca Raubacher.
Raubacher won the Best in Show award at RAL's Third Biennial Exhibition and is known for her portraiture and equine art. The exhibition consists of both large-scale paintings and intimate drawings coursing over Raubacher's career. Drawing and Paintings 1975 - Present was curated by prominent curator Dr. J. Susan Isaacs, professor of art history at Towson University, where she teaches advanced undergraduate and graduate-level courses in modern and contemporary art history and theory, and museum studies. She is also the curator for the Holtzman MFA and Center for the Arts Galleries and was the adjunct curator for the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts from 2001-09, where she remains as curator of special projects. Isaacs also publishes on contemporary art.
Isaacs will host a gallery talk, "From the Curator," beginning at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9, in RAL's Corkran Gallery. She will discuss Raubacher's career as well as the process and challenge of selecting works from a timespan of over 40 years. She will also discuss works in the exhibition.
Also opening Friday is Inklings, with works by award-winning Pennsylvania artist Lynnette Shelley, on display in the Tubbs Gallery. Shelley specializes in contemporary mixed media animal and reptilian-themed works. Having a great love of wildlife, folktales, tribal art and world mythology, she fuses these influences into strikingly unique, colorful works of art.
On display in the Ventures Gallery will be an exhibition by John Mosher, former exhibitions director at RAL, titled Pareidolia. Pareidolia is a term that means "a psychological phenomenon involving a stimulus (an image or a sound) wherein the mind perceives a familiar pattern of something where none actually exists." Mosher, a multimedia artist working in video, sound, and mixed media on paper, is interested in creating narratives that weave across various mediums. He received his MFA from the University of Cincinnati and is currently an assistant professor of art at Salisbury University in Maryland.
The Homestead will host the exhibition Of Course You Did! by printmaking artist Jonathan McFadden. McFadden's work is centered on connections among imagery, text, and found and mass-produced objects. He creates narrative contingencies by linking information largely derived from and influenced by social media posts, cellphone photography, and online advertising, to name a few. The exhibition consists of works created by the techniques of lithography and photogravure. McFadden holds an MFA in printmaking from Edinburgh College of Art, United Kingdom, and a BFA in printmaking from Texas State University San Marcos. He is currently an assistant professor of print media in the School of Art & Visual Studies at the University of Kentucky.
Each of these exhibitions runs through Oct. 8, with the exception of Of Course You Did! which runs until Oct. 31. The RAL is at 12 Dodds Lane in Henlopen Acres. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
