Saint Andrew the Apostle Orthodox Church expands in Lewes

December 3, 2015

The local Eastern Orthodox community, located on Mackenzie Way in Lewes, continues to grow and is expanding church facilities. St. Andrew the Apostle is the only Orthodox parish in the state of Delaware outside of Wilmington and the only Orthodox Church in Sussex County. Established 10 years ago as a family of Orthodox Christians from all ethnic backgrounds, the church moved from a sojourn in the Henlopen Grange Hall on Savannah Road to their new building on Mackenzie Way in October, 2012.

Since that time and in less than three short years, parish membership has increased by 120 percent, and continues to grow. Expansion plans began in earnest in April of this year when the church purchased a former model home located 200 yards away, which has now been moved by East Coast Structural Movers and placed next to their existing church home. It will be annexed to the existing building in the spring.

When complete, the expansion project will provide the church with an additional 2,850 square feet for a larger sanctuary, additional Sunday school classrooms, a more complete and functional kitchen, a Great Hall for coffee hours and events, and increased storage space.

Divine Liturgy is celebrated every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. throughout the year. The Rev. Boniface Black and parishioners always provide a warm welcome to visitors. For additional information and schedules, go to www.orghodoxdelmar.org or call 302-645-5791.
