Science and Society talk to focus on life in deep Earth May 13

May 7, 2025

In partnership with AAUW Delaware, the Lewes Public Library’s Science and Society Lecture Series will welcome Dr. Karen Lloyd for an online presentation at 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, based on her book "Intraterrestrials: Discovering the Strangest Life on Earth.”

Life thrives in the deepest, darkest recesses of Earth’s crust – from methane seeps in the ocean floor to the highest reaches of Arctic permafrost – and it is unlike anything seen on the surface. Lloyd will share her experiences working in challenging and often dangerous conditions uncovering subsurface life that is truly alien: microbes living in environments as extreme as boiling water, pure acid, and bleach, with some of these living cells surviving for hundreds of thousands of years or longer.

To register for the online event and other upcoming Science and Society Lectures, visit tinyurl.com/LPLScienceSpring25 or call the library at 302-645-2733.

Karen G. Lloyd is the Wrigley Chair in Environmental Studies and professor of earth sciences at the University of Southern California. Her work has appeared in leading publications such as Nature and Science as well as two TED talks.

“AAUW Delaware is thrilled to sponsor the author event featuring Karen Lloyd,,” said Christine Gillean, AAUW Delaware president. “We champion equal opportunities in education, including encouraging girls to enter STEM fields, and celebrating women currently in STEM professions.”

The Lewes Public Library’s Science and Society - Making Sense of the World Around Us lecture series is co-organized and moderated by Colin Norman, the former news editor at Science; Fred Dylla, executive director emeritus of the American Institute of Physics and author of “Scientific Journeys”; and Linda Dylla, former public information officer at the Jefferson Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy.
