Human and animal well being are inextricably intertwined. That was the message, loud and clear, from the 3 featured speakers at this weekend’s REHOBOTH BEACH VEG FEST.
From Aysha Akhtar, M.D., (http://ayshaakhtar.com/about-dr-akhtar/)
we learned of the connection between animal welfare and public health, of looming epidemics and the caged stench of disease-ridden animals on factory farms.
From Jon Camp of The Humane League (http://www.thehumaneleague.com/our-story/)
we learned of national efforts to reduce animal suffering by selective targeting of corporations and their practices while achieving major victories that reduce meat consumption and spare millions of animals from a life of misery in cages.
From Karen Ranzi, Raw Vegan Coach and Chef, (http://superhealthychildren.com ) we learned how her successful efforts to restore the health of her own son set her on the path to teach others about the extraordinary benefits of raw, plant-based, animal-free eating.
Each of the 3 speakers shared uniquely personal stories from very different perspectives and yet each arrived at the same conclusion--When animals suffer from human action and/or inaction, people suffer, too. The health of one, depends on the health of the other. I see this message as both warning and promise--WARNING that an unimaginable pandemic is ripe for engulfing the planet--PROMISE that dramatic reduction of animal consumption can lead to a more peaceful and healthful life for all!
