Sussex County, land trust to protect 500 acres of farmland
If the GA leaves the real estate transfer tax alone

STEVEN BILLUPS PHOTO
Land stewards from the Delaware Chapter of the Nature Conservancy along with National Fish and Wildlife staff and volunteers from duPont and the U.S. Air Force were back at work on the reforestation of farmland at Milford Neck Saturday, April 5. Using a posthole auger, volunteer Kayla Kipp, left, from Dover Air Base, along with the Nature Conservancy’s land steward Ashley Sutton dig a hole for the trees that will become a habitat island.

It's official: Sussex council passes lot maintenance ordinance
RON MACARTHUR PHOTO
On Tuesday, May 6, the Sussex County council passed an amended lot maintenance ordinance, giving Sussex County staff more leverage in an effort to rid the landscape of junk vehicles. Under the ordinance, no more than two unregistered or inoperable vehicles or boats are permitted on residential lots. Grass more than 12 inches tall could be the next target of Sussex County officials. Although there is an ordinance on the books outlawing growth more than a foot high, wording in the ordinance limits enforcement.

Lewes resident Ruth Draper speaks at a Showfield at Lewes subdivision and zoning public hearing at the Lewes Public Library. Like most who spoke at the hearing, Draper opposes nearly all aspects of the 607-housing-unit community. “Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money,” Draper said, evoking a Cree Indian proverb.
