Graduates receive certification

Pharmacy Technician students received certification after recently graduating from the Sussex Tech Adult Division program. The 144-hour program prepared students for a career in a retail or hospital pharmacy. Students learned pharmacology, pharmacy calculations, computer applications, ethics, confidentiality laws and more.

Community Bank Delaware named two Cape Henlopen High School graduating seniors as recipients of $1,000 scholarships Aug. 12, at the Lewes branch. One scholarship was awarded to Cape high graduating senior Dwayne Sheppard, who demonstrated leadership and involvement in school-sponsored activities. Sheppard, an honor student,, plans to attend Virginia Union University and major in business administration. Lewes woman chosen for scholarship
Jennifer Anne Pringle, daughter of Thomas and Diane Farrow of Lewes, was chosen to receive an academic scholarship from the Fred C. and Mary R. Koch Foundation for the 2010-11 academic year. Jennifer will be attending the University of Delaware. Recipients are dependents of current or former employees of Koch Industries or its subsidiaries.

Lewes man earns doctorate in psychology
Twain Gonzales of Lewes was awarded a doctor of psychology degree in clinical psychology by Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine at its graduate program commencement ceremony held July 31, at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, Pa. He is the son of Lois Gonzales of Milton, Pa., and Harold Gonzales of Shamokin, Pa., and his partner, John A. Donato of Lewes, who own The Buttery in Lewes. He earned a bachelor of science degree in special education from Bloomsburg University in 1984 and a master of education degree in counseling psychology from Temple University in 1985.

Lewes woman makes dean’s list at UMD
Emilie K. Urdahl of Lewes was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Students on the dean’s list have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Emilie is a student in the College of Liberal Arts.

Cape graduate earns Merck fellowship
Michelle Munyikwa, a 2007 Cape Henlopen High School graduate, is the first student at the College of William and Mary to be named a UNCF-Merck undergraduate fellow and one of only 15 recipients in the United States. The award is intended to encourage African-American students interested in biomedical sciences. It will fund up to $25,000 of her college tuition and fees. She will also be able to participate in two summer internships in Merck’s industrial laboratories, mentored by a Merck scientist, and will receive research stipends totaling at least $10,000.

High school diploma prep offered online
The James H. Groves High School diploma and general educational development test preparation are now available online in Delaware through the Delaware Center for Distance Adult Learning. All Delaware residents age 16 or older who did not finish high school can access these programs online to complete their assignments on their own schedule. Apply for admission at dcdal.org.
