The game was close, 48-46 with 1:06 left to play, with the Ravens of Sussex Tech holding on by a bucket.

The coaching history between the benches was not close. Lauren Carra of Cape is in year one of her career after being a starter at the University of Delaware during the storied Elena Delle Donne years. Chester Davis of Sussex Tech is in year 41, having coached at Laurel, Epworth Christian and Sussex Tech. His son, Justin, has been at his side the last 18 years.

“We moved our games up to 6:30 because Chester can’t stay up late,” said Ravens Athletic Director Nick Pegelow with a smile.

Rukiya Davis, hounded by Cape’s Alia Marshall the entire game, sank the crucial free throws in the final minute to pace the Ravens to a 52-46 victory. Davis finished with 14 points, including a 9-for-10 night from the free-throw line.

The win improved the Ravens' record to 9-7. Cape dropped to 8-6.

“Game day is the same as always,” Chester Davis said. “Still as exciting. We are trying to win games and make the tournament.”

The game was even throughout. Cape clung to a 19-18 lead at halftime, but a 22-14 third-quarter run by the Ravens had the Vikings chasing the entire fourth period.

Alison Palmer came off the bench for Cape to score 11 points, and she brought the Vikings back to within a basket with a minute left to play.

Logan Shuttleworth ran the point guard position for Cape for most of the game and finished with a season-high 17 points. Lexi Watkins added 11.

The Ravens were paced by Davis' 14 points, Janiya Stevens with 10 and Kara Hignutt with 8 points.

The Ravens' five remaining games include: Red Lion (4-13), Caesar Rodney (13-3), Woodbridge (10-5), Dover (8-6) and St. Thomas More (12-1).

Cape has six games left: Ursuline (9-5), Dover (8-6), St. Elizabeth (9-2), Smyrna (7-8), Sussex Central (10-5) and Seaford (1-10).
