Fundraiser Oct. 30 benefits School of the Arts
The Southern Delaware School of the Arts PTO will sponsor an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner, book fair and Chinese auction from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, at the school, located at 27 Hoosier St., Selbyville. Advance tickets are $5 for seniors, $6 for adults; $4 for children under 12; and free for children under 5. Add $1 more for tickets purchased at the door. For more information, call 436-1066. Milton Elementary to host What in the World
The Delaware Business, Industry, Education Alliance is presenting a What in the World program from 9 to 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 24 at Milton Elementary School to help to positively influence elementary school students into looking at careers that require science, math or a technology background. The presenters are a varied group with substantial experience in their fields. The program is being held for the fifth grade and approximately 85 students are planning to attend. Volunteers are needed for this program and others in Kent and Sussex counties. RES PTO seeks classroom sponsors
The Rehoboth Elementary School PTO thanks everyone who participated in its PTO partners program for the 2007-08 school year and those who have already renewed their support for students and staff this school year. Organizers are recruiting additional classroom sponsors and expect to announce a complete list by late October. MS scholarship applications available
Applications for the 2009 National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship Program are now available at nationalmssociety.org. Students who may qualify include high school seniors, high school graduates or GED-earners of any age who either have MS or have a parent who has MS and who want to enroll for the first time in a college or a vocational-technical school. Applications will be accepted between Oct. 15 and the deadline on Jan. 15, 2009, at Scholarship America, a national nonprofit educational support and student aid service organization that receives and evaluates all of the applications.
Essay contest open to high school students
The Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a national educational organization headquartered in Wilmington, is taking submissions for a nationwide high school student essay contest. High school students are invited to write an original 1,200-1,500 word essay on the topic, George Washington and the Formation of the American Character. The deadline for entry form submission is Nov. 28 (email submission of entry form is permissible). The deadline for essay submission is Jan. 23,. For more information, visit isi.org.
Resort management courses offered
Students will receive the training and preparation necessary to obtain entry-to mid-level management positions in the resort and spa industry at Delaware Technical & Community College, Owens Campus. This 30-hour certificate program will focus on various aspects of the industry. Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Oct. 14. The cost for this program is $465. Mariner Middle golf fundraiser is Oct. 11
Mariner Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society will host its fourth annual Golf Tournament Saturday, Oct. 11, at Shamrock Par 3 in Milton. Proceeds will benefit the group’s annual support of Adopt-A-Family. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 12. The cost is $25 per golfer, which includes lunch. VFW essay contest deadline announced
Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its ladies auxiliary sponsor the Voice of Democracy essay contest, open to high school students in grades 9 through 12, and the Patriot’s Pen essay contest, open to all students in grades 6 through 8. The Voice of Democracy contest asks students to compete by writing and recording a broadcast script based on the theme Service and Sacrifice by American’s Veterans Benefits Today’s Youth. The deadline to enter is Nov. 1. The Patriot’s Pen contest challenges middle-schoolers to write a 300-400-word essay on Why America’s Veterans Should be Honored. The deadline is also Nov. 1. Cat rescue groups to host Dewey fundraiser
The Historic Lewes Cat Society, Just Us and the Dewey Beach Feral Cat Society will be holding a fundraiser and silent auction from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Starboard Restaurant in Dewey Beach. Organizers are looking to the community and area businesses to donate items for the silent auction, and are especially interested in certificates from pet stores and grooming studios along with those from area restaurants. The event is a Black & Grey Costume Party held in conjunction with the greyhound conference. All are invited to come dressed as their favorite pet, especially the infamous Dewey black cat. Greyhounds are also invited to come in costume. Children are welcome, and face painting will be available. The Starboard will be open for food and drink during the event. All money earned at the event will be used for clinics for cats and dogs in Sussex County. Contact Vivian Barry at 227-7000.
Sussex Tech welcomes new vice principal
Sussex Technical High School recently welcomed Jason Peel as its new assistant principal. Peel will be in charge of students whose last names are from H through O, as well as having several other duties at the high school.
Peel received his bachelor’s degree in Spanish education from Elon University. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Spanish language and literature from Middlebury College, Vt., by way of Madrid, Spain. He also holds a master’s degree in school administration from the University of North Carolina. Peel began his educational career as a high school Spanish teacher. He has taught elementary school, middle school, high school and at the University of North Carolina. He also has previous experience as a high school principal. A native of North Carolina, Peel and his wife, Lisa, came to Delaware in the summer of 2006 to be near her parents in Milford. They have two children.
Cape’s class of 1978 to hold Oct. 18 reunion
