Coolness is an essence: it cannot be learned.

Bobby is not about money,
greed, graft or secret bank accounts
WHAT ABOUT BOB? - Bob Wolhar is a member of the Dewey Beach Seven Sisters Hall of Fame - at least he was until last weekend. There is a cadre of reprobates without rebates, wing commanders and Bud Light blue lighters who have run every race in the series and attended every post-race party over the last four years. But their boy Bob was absent for the northbeach 5K because, like a sensible person, he elected to stay in bed exercising an option they all wish they had, but let’s not look too deeply into that scenario.

“What about Bob? Where is Bob?” sounded across the Rehoboth Bay like a fog horn on a pontoon boat. Hall of Famer Casey Durnan stood up a gave the neck slash symbol meaning Bob was done, thrown out of an elite club that accepts no excuses or personal checks.

I kind of like the idea of a Hall of Famer who can never retire from where you miss a race and get tossed.

In my case, I was inducted into a Football Hall of Fame that was discontinued when they realized I was a member.

WHAT ABOUT BOBBY? - Yes, I saw the WBOC online picture of Bobby Jacobs impersonating a schizophrenic homeless person, and if anyone thinks Bobby is coming loose from that character they don’t understand major players. I love Bobby, he is my friend and as you listen to comments from people throughout Delaware, you won’t find many Bobby haters except for a few who got stiffed the last two years of the tournament.

Bobby is not about money, greed, graft or secret bank accounts. He got financially jammed and made bad decisions which usually result in tighter jams. The money is chump change in the overall scheme of white-collar criminal malfeasance not even approaching in $100 grand. Compare that to the Jack Abramoff scandal with all its local connections where people pocketed a lot more than Bobby Jacobs and didn’t have to go on the lam but just walked away.

A BREED APART - Do tough guys need tough dogs? Drug dealers ruined the rep of the Rottweiler and a deep, stagnant pond of scumbags have tortured loyal and lovable pit bulls who by nature make great pets but not anymore because no one in a neighborhood will trust an old pit bull off the chain. The story of the Mike Vick indictment hit last Wednesday and took up cable air time on every channel except Nickelodeon where Petey Dog remains my all-time favorite. Sadistically executing an animal by drowning, electrocution, hanging or beating it like a braided rug is a warning sign that the offender is likely to evolve into a human murderer because of lack of empathy so characteristic of psychopathic behavior. Jim Rome, the brightest of sports commentators on at 4:30 on ESPN, has the talent to trash sick animals like Vick by placing the word allegedly at the end of his sentence. By the time this story reached the Leno program, Jay said, “They uncovered a dog fighting ring in Los Angeles where chihuahuas were trained to rip the sweaters off each other.”

I know funny, but no dog lover is in the mood for humor.

SNIPPETS - Carrie Lingo scored a hat trick as the United States field hockey team defeated Netherlands Antilles 4-1 in the Pan American Games opener for both teams played in Rio De Janeiro. So that’s why Carrie wasn’t around to defend the Jungle Jim’s 5K from last July. What a lame excuse! The girls - excuse me, women - reached the semifinals with a 7-0 shutout over Cuba. Next up for the USA was a Thursday, July 19 game versus Canada.

Maxine Fluharty was invited to play in the CanAm games in Vancouver British Columbia as a result of her performance at the Junior National Camp in Boston last July 5-8.

The local camp run by coach KK has changed its date from July 23-27 top July 30 to Aug. 3. Spots are still available by contacting coach KK at .

There is no excuse available when a person doesn’t show up where others expected they would. When someone asked me - the Cape Gazette sports editor - where I was or how come I wasn’t where they thought I should be, all I can answer is “I don’t know.”

The summer with all the travel ball teams, all-stars, almost all-stars, camps and leagues without printed rosters with such catchy names like red and blue, I find myself at a desk filled with notebooks, loose papers, Gatorade and coffee to make a grown man grimace, wondering if a shot of Ritalin will help me focus. And as everyone who knows me understands, my underlying career goal is to ignore as many hard-working and deserving little beaners as I possibly can while favoring those who can give me free stuff, like say a salted bagel.

Congratulations to all the unpaid umpires and coaches scorekeepers, groundskeepers, beekeepers, those sentenced to hard and hot time inside concession stands and anyone else who works unselfishly for kids who have fun playing sports. Now I’m off with my dirty shirt!

Go on now, git!
