Delaware State track coaches Duane Henry and Charlie Bell are friends of mine and so are athletes Brycen Davis and Isaiah Brisco. That is not relevant other than wiring me up with insider information.
On Friday, Dec. 5 the Hornets opened the indoor season competing at the Navy Invitational. Isaiah Brisco began his college career by running 8.4 in the 60-meter hurdles, good for third place. Darius Sivels, former Sussex Tech athlete, long jumped 23 feet, good for third place. Brycen Davis ran on his team’s B team which clocked a time of 3:18 just three seconds behind the A team which ran 3:15.
NO FORD BAILOUT - Maren Ford of Lewes will never bail out of the athletic scene. Maren, former Cape and Princeton field hockey athlete, played on the USA National Indoor team at the recent November Pan Am games held in Argentina. The U.S. women won the silver medal while the men earned gold. Check out all the information a panamhockey.org. Maren was a scout at the recent futures tournament held in California in addition to playing in a co-ed tournament.
BASKETBALL - Not baskets - we’re talking basket! The Cape junior varsity girls basketball team was trailing visiting Dover last Friday night 24-0 with 2:14 left in the third period. The storyline of zero points I found intriguing, then Cape’s Desire’ Banks actually banked home a jumper making the score 24-2.
Dover responded by going on a 15-0 run to close out the game and win 39-2. I don’t know what any of this means - actually I kind of do - and I could say if you want to make baskets during the season it may be a good idea to take a few shots in the off-season.
Dover had a few players that were much less than physically fit in a much more sort of way, so what is going on? I thought you got in shape prior to coming out for a sport, not using the sport to drop major poundage.
BACKWARD GLANCE – Take a look back at Cape football the first two years of head coach Brian Donahue. In 1997 and 1998 the team had a regular season combined record of 18-2 losing in 1997 to Sussex Central 15-9 and losing 7-6 to St. Mark’s in 1998. The 1998 team had a string of seven straight shutouts while giving up only 20 points and scoring 338 on the season. Cape lost in the tournament in 1997 to Newark 21-0 and in 1998 to Caesar Rodney 27-26.
ROUND ROBIN WRESTLING - Cape placed second last weekend at the Haverford Invitational Round Robin Tournament. D.J. Reed went down to 215 from the heavyweight class and was a perfect 5-0 to place first. The Vikings left four starters back in Lewes for various reasons. The results were: 103 Chris Young was 2-1 for second; 112 Zach Lee 4-1 for second; 119 Garrett Smith 0-2; 125 John Young 2-2 for third place.; 130 Andrew Westgate 2-1; 135 Kevin Smith 4-1, for second place; 140 Andrew Ricker 1-2; 145 Josh Bell 1-3 for fourth place, 152 Ian Eckrote 4-1, second place, 171 Nate Croney 3-2, 4th place; 189 Dan Smith 2-3 for fifth place; 285 Matt Schneider 2-2 for third place. “We wrestled very well. Everyone was using the moves we have been working in practice,” coach Chris Mattioni said. “We wrestle Delmar home on Wednesday and then in the Penn Manor tournament next weekend.”
SNIPPETS - Joe Seymore (Hodgson) grabbed an offensive rebound and his basket with three seconds to play gave Central Connecticut a 66-65 overtime victory over Mount St. Mary’s last Saturday afternoon, Dec. 6. The Blue Devils, with Cape’s Shemik Thompson running the point, have won four in a row and are now 4-3 on the season.
Kyle White scored 23 points as Goldey Beacom College edged Columbia Union 73-71.
The Sussex Sting Baseball Club is holding a 10 percent night fundraiser at The Roadhouse Steak Joint Tuesday, Dec. 9. The Roadhouse will donate proceeds to the the Sussex Sting. Come on out and enjoy a great meal while supporting our local kids.
Do you know which winner of the Heisman Trophy earned the most votes in the history of the award going back to 1935? That’s right, it was O.J. Simpson in 1968, and it is still beyond my comprehension that “The Juice” sank into serious mental illness. He should spend the rest of his days watching television in the sunroom of a hospital for the criminally insane. Wait, he got nine years in a maximum security prison which is the same thing minus the medicines.
I predicted the Eagles’ win over the Giants and Dallas and Redskin losses so don’t look now but Cowboys host Giants next week while Ravens host Steelers while the Eagles get a Monday night walkover versus the Browns.
I am slow out of the blocks this Christmas so no time to tag a tree at Sposato’s Pine Hollow Christmas Tree Farm. I will just roll up, point and pick, and toss it in the truck.
Question: What do you get an atheist for Christmas? Get them nothing but do it now before they change their minds.
