Mary Chandler, activist and teacher
Mary Chandler, 89, of Silver Spring, Md., and Rehoboth Beach, world traveler and lifelong activist for world peace and civil rights, died Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at her Silver Spring home, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Born Jan. 3, 1920, the daughter of Travis and Laura Williams McGuire, Chandler grew up in Morton, Wash., and attended the University of Washington. During World War II, she moved to New York City, where she met her husband, Joseph W. Chandler. The couple settled in Silver Spring and in 1963 made Rehoboth their second home.
The doors of their New Castle Street home, with its purple porch, were always open, and chairs were always found at the dinner table for family, friends, friends of friends and all who came by. She walked everywhere and came to know generations of neighbors; she also worked tirelessly in her gardens and never met a beach chair she couldn’t fix. She continued to swim in the ocean every summer until 1998, the year she suffered a stroke in her Rehoboth Beach home.
Before that, she taught for several years at Belt Junior High School in Wheaton, Md., and later was among the first Americans to teach English in China.
Her grandchildren fondly remember the time she rescued a broken Catts umbrella from a trash can on the beach, carried it home and completely repaired it. The first time she took it back to the beach, a young Catts employee informed her she would have to return it and pay to use it. Although she patiently explained it had been thrown in the trash, but she fixed it so it was now hers, a police officer was called to the beach. Only at the officer’s request did she very unhappily return the umbrella.
She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by son Joseph B. Chandler and wife Elyse of Lanham, Md.; daughters Laura Ritter of Rehoboth Beach, Kathleen Chandler of Buffalo, N.Y., Sheryl Moore of Silver Spring and Dr. Kelly Chandler and husband Dan Ziarkowski of Foresthill, Calif.; grandchildren Joseph, Kathleen and Gary Chandler, Megan Pamepinto, Abigail Mary and Karen Ritter, and Kaitlyn and Thaddeus Joseph “TJ” Ziarkowski; great-grandchildren Liam and Wylan Chandler-Isacksen, Lucius King Chandler, Mason and Ryder Pamepinto, and Eva Prado Chandler; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
In memory of her love of reading, the family suggests memorial contributions to Rehoboth Beach Public Library, 226 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach 19971.
