Anyda Marchant,
attorney, novelist
Anyda Marchant, 94, a retired attorney, novelist and publisher, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at home in Rehoboth Beach.
Ms. Marchant was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, moving with her family to Washington, D.C. at age six. After earning her undergraduate degree, and in 1933, her law degree from what is now George Washington University, she was admitted to practice in Washington and Virginia, before the U.S. Court of Claims and the U.S. Supreme Court. As a law student, she served as an assistant to women’s rights pioneer Alice Paul, who was then doing the first research for an Equal Rights Amendment.
In l940 Marchant was appointed assistant in the Law Library of Congress, Latin American Law section. When the man heading that department was drafted, Marchant was appointed in his place. When he returned in 1945, she relinquished the post, but declined a lesser offered position, on principle.
She returned to Rio to work, then did a brief stint as a translator at the 1948 Pan American Union Conference in Bogota, Columbia. From there she returned to Washington as one of the first female attorneys with the law firm now known as Covington and Burling. She served briefly in private practice and with the U.S. Commerce Dept. before moving to the legal department of the Word Bank where she worked for 18 years until her 1972 retirement.
That same year, Marchant and her life partner Muriel Crawford founded the Naiad Press as a vehicle for publishing Marchant’s first novel, “The Latecomer,” written under the pen  name Sarah Aldridge. In 1974, Naiad was formally incorporated in Delaware, proceeding to publish 11 Sarah Aldridge novels, a wide selection of other feminist and lesbian literature and becoming a powerhouse in feminist publishing. Marchant served as Naiad’s president from its inception until the mid 1990’s.
In 1995 Marchant and Crawford withdrew from Naiad to found their own publishing company, A&M Books of Rehoboth Beach. A&M published the last three Sarah Aldridge novels (the latest in 2003), along with the book “As I Lay Frying – a Rehoboth Beach Memoir” by author Fay Jacobs. Passionate about supporting feminist writers, Marchant continued her publishing and mentoring activities until very recently, highlighted by the Oct. 2005 release of the novel “Celebrating Hotchclaw” by feminist literary icon Ann Allen Shockley.
Marchant and Crawford began coming to Rehoboth Beach in 1965, purchasing a weekend home on Ann B Street in 1957. Upon retirement they moved to a home in downtown Rehoboth, which became the site of legendary Saturday evening salons, with cocktails, conversation and an amazingly diverse crowd – neighbors, clergy, writers, musicians, young and old, gay and straight - filling the spacious front porch. In the winter the salon would move to the couple’s Pompano Beach, Fla. home.
Among her many activities, Marchant recalls proudly organizing the very first National Organization for Women meeting in Delaware, when she started a Rehoboth chapter.
Marchant is survived by Crawford, her partner of 57 years, as well as a large circle of loving friends.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 21 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Rehoboth.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marchant’s name to CAMP Rehoboth, Compassionate Care Hospice, All Saints Building Fund or the charity of choice.

The family gathered often to celebrate holidays and birthdays at Quillens Point in Sussex County where he and Nell built a home on Indian River Bay after his 1985 retirement from the Baltimore, MD office of CIGNA, formerly the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company.
Mr. Hutchins was a humble man who preferred listening to talking yet, under his quiet management, grew the insurance company’s Baltimore office to the second largest in the country during his career. His collection eventually numbered more than 1,000 carvings and was featured in “Wildfowl Carving and Collecting” magazine.
Mr. Hutchins enjoyed myriad other interests, including bird watching, photography and traveling. An enthusiastic adventurer, he focused on nature and wildlife trips to remote areas of the Arctic, including Greenland, Scandinavia and Alaska.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, her father was a prominent banker and her mother was a well-known Spanish actress who gave up her career when she married. Her maternal grandmother was a lady-in-waiting at the court of Coburg, where she met her Greek husband, a poet and professor of literature who translated Goethe’s “Dr. Faustus” into Greek. Her parents fled Germany during the war years and she was educated in Brussels, Belgium. Following World War II she lived in South America where she was on the staff of the British Counsel in Chile. She later worked in Sydney, Australia and for the World Bank in Washington, D.C.
Msgr. William O’Donnell of Washington, D.C., a longtime friend, said he first met Desiree when he served as vice counsel in the U.S. Embassy in Hamburg in 1946. He said it was in the days before he became a priest and she was one of several girls who lived next door in the British Zone. He said she was always a lady and a quality person who could reach out to people and it was a great help after the war ended, as she knew very important people, working for the U.S. consulate during that time. He also noted that she had lived through the terrible bombing of Hamburg in July, 1943, when more than 120,000 people were killed.
Msgr. O’Connell, a lawyer, noted that although her father was Jewish, she was baptized a Catholic in 1941 by the Apostolic Delegate to Brussels. He said he was reunited with her in Washington after he became a priest and she was ill and called him.
They maintained contact through the years and he performed her latest marriage to Charles Albisetti, who died last year. Msgr. O’Donnell also knew her prior husband, Marshall Noble, a State Department official, with whom she traveled the world, including stops in Luxembourg, Holland, Rangoon, Mandalay and in Saigon.
They always came back to Rehoboth Beach whenever they were in the United States, he said. Her brother-in-law was Joshua Logan, the theatrical producer.
While in Burma, she devoted much time to UNICEF and in Saigon she did volunteer work for the Red Cross, resulting in her receiving an award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. She was also recognized for her work in the evacuation of Saigon, assisting women and children in boarding planes for three days before boarding the last plane herself to return to Washington, D.C.

Paul Albert Taylor,
retired from DuPont
Paul Albert Taylor, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at the home of his daughter in Rehoboth Beach, surrounded by loved ones.
Paul was born in Wilmington on Sept. 2, 1917, the son of Harry Ellsworth Taylor and Florence May Raymond Taylor. With the untimely death of his father when he was five and the onset of the Great Depression when he was 12, he had to assume many responsibilities at an early age. In his teens he played amateur football in the Wilmington area. He was forced to interrupt his education during the 1930s, but returned to his studies later in life, earning his GED certificate in 1976. In 1968 he moved his family to Newark, where he spent all but the last several years of his life. His career as a welder began in 1939 at Sun Shipbuilding in Chester, Pa. With a brief interruption for military service in the Navy during World War II, he was continuously employed by Sun Ship until the end of 1949. Paul enjoyed a 32-year career with the DuPont Company. He began his career there in 1949 at Edgemoor as a welder. From there he plied his trade as a pipefitter welder at the DuPont Building in Wilmington. He moved to the construction department at Chambers Works in Deepwater, N.J., in 1960. He then went to the mechanical department in 1964, also at Chambers Works, where he ultimately ended his career as a master pipefitter in 1981.
He was an avid bowler throughout his adult life, participating in league bowling until he was in his mid 80s. At one time in the late 1950s, he became owner of a small bowling alley in New Castle, which he operated for five years. As a senior bowler he won numerous individual and team awards and bowled an over-200 game in his 80s. He also enjoyed billiards and was an excellent player, as many Newark Senior Center participants could attest.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Katherine Mae, in 1996.

Amelia “Nanny” Mazutier,
foster grandparent
Amelia Mazutier, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, surrounded by her devoted and loving daughter, Yolanda Govin and family by her side at the HCR Manor Care Alzheimer’s Unit in Wilmington where she was cared for with dignity and kindness by her caregivers, nurses and hospice staff.
“Mazu” as she was affectionately called by her many friends and sisters and brothers of her faith, was born on Sept. 26, 1910 in Havana, Cuba. She left her beloved Cuba in May of 1966 to flee the wrath of communism and traveled to Madrid, Spain where she lived for five months awaiting legal clearance to join her daughter and family in Wilmington. She was known for her integrity, feistiness and fearlessness. She never backed down from adversity or challenge. A devoted Jehovah Witness for over 42 years she often risked her freedom in communist Cuba to practice her faith openly never fearing reprisal.
Close to the age of 80, she fought off a would-be mugger in her building with her cane and vocal cords winning the skirmish. She defended her views eloquently, albeit sometimes in Spanish, until she made her point. She became independent after only five short months in the U.S. finding employment in the mushroom industry in Kennett Square where she worked for the next 10 years. The highlight of her long life was her work in the Foster Grandparent program. She lovingly cared for thousands of children for the next 20 plus years, culminating with the honor of receiving the Foster Grandparent Program Achievement Award for Outstanding Services to Delaware Children with Special Needs. Known for her delightful sense of humor and love of dance she energized any room she entered. At the age of 92 she put many to shame on the dance floor at her grandson’s wedding in 2002.
She is survived by her only daughter, Yolanda Govin of Wilmington; her granddaughter, Yrene Waldron of Wilmington; grandson, Austin Govin of Lewes; five great grandchildren, Glenn Rooks, Jr., Heather Rooks, Donna Adams, Austin and Brian Govin; and seven great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Beeson Funeral Home, Wilmington, with burial in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.
Contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.
