Peter Lee Ottman,
computer specialist
Peter Lee Ottman, 71, of Rehoboth Beach, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, of cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Ottman was born March 28, 1934, in Schenectady, N.Y., son of the late Milton Henry and Ellen (Drumm) Ottman.
He served four years in the U.S. Navy performing weather analysis and forecasting duties aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain CVA-39. He enjoyed a distinguished career of challenging experiences managing, project planning, designing, programming, maintaining and operating data processing systems for various applications. Mr. Ottman worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce Weather Bureau. He also had been employed as a computer specialist for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. After his retirement from the Federal Government, he managed systems development for NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center.
Pete was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach where he served as financial secretary on the church council. 
Peter understood and appreciated the gift of life when he received his heart transplant from an unknown donor 13 years ago.
Pete is survived by his wife Charlene Miller Ottman: a daughter, Stephanie Ottman of Baltimore; a son, Thomas Ottman and wife Susan of Kalispell, Mont/; stepdaughter, Victoria Schowalter and husband Joe of Spring Hill, Kn.; stepson, John O’Branovich of Strum, Wis.; grandsons, William and Thomas Schowalter and John J. O’Branovich and granddaughter Taylor O’Branovich; a sister, Virginia Abbe and husband Robert of Florida; one niece; two nephews; six great nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Bear.
A memorial service will be held at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 7 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, Saturday March 4, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Donald Schaefer officiating. Interment will be private. 
The family requests that donations be made to The American Heart Association, P.O. Box 634445, Cincinnati, OH 45263-4445. Include a note indicating donations should be applied to the heart transplant research department in Pete Ottman’s name.

Harold E. Powers,
retired from Chrysler
Harold E. Powers, 76, of Newark, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 24, 2006.
He was born in Newhall, W.Va. on May 20, 1929, the son of the late Edward and Bertha Wiles Powers.
Harold was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army and Air Force. He retired from Chrysler Corporation where he worked as a driver. He was a member of West Wilmington Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War Veterans and United Auto Workers Local 1183. A talented musician, he performed in many bands in the Northeastern states.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Peggy A. Powers of Newark; a son, Stephen Powers of Newark; five grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Grace Brent and her husband, Scott of Princess Anne, Md. and M. Faye Hill and her husband, Richard of Milton; his mother-in-law, Jeanette Jackson of New Caney, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, Newark, with burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Addie M. Davis,
Sussex housekeeper
Addie M. Davis, 95, of Georgetown, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, in Life Care at Lofland Park in Seaford.
She was born on April 26, 1910, in Millsboro, daughter of the late Joshua Sr. and Mary E. Harmon Hitchens.
Mrs. Davis was a self-employed housekeeper for many area families for many years.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church in Millsboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Davis in 1978; four brothers, Joshua Hitchens Jr., Ernest Hitchens, Wayne Hitchens and Joseph Hitchens; and one sister, Elsie Hooper.
She is survived by one sister, Mary Louise Adkins of Millsboro; one brother, Thurman Hitchens of Smyrna; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church in Millsboro, where friends may call after 10 a.m. The Revs. Richard Worthy and Malcolm Steele will officiate.
Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery in Millsboro.

Robert B. Johnston,
owned construction co.
Robert Brendan Johnston, 35, of Millsboro, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006.
He was born February 11, 1971 in Harrisburg, Pa., son of Robert Bernard Johnston of Lutherville, Md. and Patricia Dowley Jeffries of Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Johnston owned and operated Robert Johnston Construction Company. He was a wonderful carpenter, building objects of beauty that were made to last, especially decks. He was an avid fisherman and guitarist, and was very good at sketching people and animals. Most importantly he loved spending time with his son, Riley Anthony Johnston. In addition to his parents and his son, Mr. Johnston leaves behind his previous wife and good friend, Jennifer Grello Renshaw of Lewes; his sister Laura Muggleton and her husband Andrew of Longmont, Colo.; his stepmother, Bonnie Johnston; and his stepfather, William Jeffries. 
A memorial service was held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, with interment private.

Robert Wayne Roberts,
Georgetown resident
Robert Wayne Roberts, 40, of Georgetown, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at home.
Mr. Roberts was born Jan. 13, 1966, to Robert Michael Roberts and Kathleen Shockley. Along with his parents, Wayne is survived by his grandmother, Ida Hickman; his son, Anthony Roberts; his daughters, Ashley Roberts, Amanda Roberts and Bethany Roberts; a brother, Michael Anthony Roberts Sr.; a sister, Tammy Gail Overington; and his fiancée, Ashley R. Morris.
Services were held from the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Millsboro, with burial private.

E.O. ‘Lang’ Langerak,
summer resident
E. O. “Lang” Langerak, 85, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at Stonegates Retirement Community in Greenville, DE after a long illness.
Born in 1920 in Pella, Ia., Lang was the son of William and Berdina Langerak. He graduated from Central College in Pella and worked briefly as a high school teacher in Garden Grove, IA. Lang served in the Army during World War II and used the G.I. Bill to earn his Masters and Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Delaware. Upon graduation Lang began a 35-year career with the DuPont Company holding various positions in research, human resources and management of Jackson Laboratory in Deepwater, N.J.
Lang loved his summer home in Lewes, and the many friends he made there. His greatest joy was having the entire family at the beach, especially his much-loved grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, puttering in his basement, loyally rooting for his favorite Philadelphia sports teams, playing bridge and poker, and traveling both in this country and abroad. Lang was an active member of Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church serving in various capacities including elder. He was also a member of the Lewes Yacht Club, the DuPont Country Club and the Occidentals. Although he held a number of patents and had received numerous professional awards Lang always listed “family” as his most important accomplishment.
Lang is survived by his wife, Marian “Marnie” Sawin Langerak; daughter, Kristin DeMesse; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Jim Selsor, all of Wilmington; son and daughter-in-law, Pete and Kim Still Langerak of Greensboro, N.C.; and grandchildren, Sophie DeMesse, Stephen and Margaret Selsor and Stephanie, Ryan and Kelly Langerak. Lang is also survived by his sisters, Bernice Vandevoort of Pella, IA and Dorothy Eaton of Newton, IA. Lang was predeceased by his first wife of over 50 years, Elizabeth Rhodes Langerak and by his grandson, Philip DeMesse.
A memorial service in celebration of Lang’s life will be held at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, March 5, at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church, 101 Old Kennett Pike, Wilmington. Interment will be private.

Stacy Martin-Donovan,
former Lewes firefighter
Stacy Lynn Martin-Donovan, 34, of Nassau, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, Md., where she had been a patient since Jan. 1, 2006.
Stacy died from complications of juvenile diabetes, which she had suffered with since the age of 9.
Stacy was born Dec. 1, 1971, daughter of William and Connie Sue Martin, who preceded her in death. She was a former member of the Lewes Fire Department and the Women of the Moose chapter 1814.
Stacey is survived by her husband of 14 years, Richard E. Donovan; her godson, Gordon Douglas Holmes of New Castle, whom she helped to raise; her sister Mary Ann Greve and husband Bob; three brothers: William Martin and his wife Kathy of Christiana; John Martin of Denton, Md. and Bob Johnson and his wife Joan of Elkton, Md.; her aunt, Linda McKendrick and family; her mother-in-law, Phyllis A. Donovan, with whom she lived, and other extended family members.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Sunday March 5, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
The Rev. Charles Arnold will officiate.
Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Georgetown.

Ethel Meyer Finley,
World War II pilot
Ethel Meyer Finley, 85, of Rehoboth Beach, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at the home of her daughter in Forked River, N.J.
Mrs. Finely, who was born in Lake City, Minn., lived on a farm near there until graduating from high school in 1937.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in science, mathematics and physical education from Winona State Teachers College and she was the first woman at the school to participate in the Civilian Pilot Training Program with the renowned aviator Max Conrad.
She taught school for a year before she learned she could not earn a living and have enough left to fly planes, so she went to work operating the Link trainer at the airport in exchange for flying time.
In March 1943, she entered the Army as a member of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP).
She was one of about 1,000 women who were the first to serve as U.S. military aviators. She trained military pilots, logging more than 1,000 hours of flying before the WASPs were disbanded in December 1944.
While in the Army, she met James A. Finley Jr. from Media, Pa., and Odessa and they were married in December 1944.
She left aviation to raise a family, living in West Virginia and Pennsylvania before settling in Summit, N.J., in 1952.
They lived there for 30 years, and she became active in women’s affairs by starting halfway houses for women recovering from substance abuse.
After moving to Rehoboth Beach, Mrs. Finley again became active with the WASP organization.
She served a variety of positions and continued to travel to national air shows and events throughout the country, telling the story of the women aviators and encouraging young women to follow their dreams.
She was president of the organization from 1992 to 1994, during which time Congress granted the women veteran status.
She received the Delaware Trailblazer Award in 1995 and was named to the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame in 2001. She was a member of the Wright Flight Youth Program board of directors in Tucson, Ariz., and served on the Dover Air Mobility Museum Foundation board. For seven years, through 2005, she organized the WASP activities at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Fly-In in Oshkosh, Wis., and the national Sun and Fun Air Show in Lakeland, Fla.
In Delaware, Mrs. Finley remained active in women’s affairs, serving on the Delaware Commission for Women and helping to establish Tau House and Houston Hall in Georgetown.
She is survived by her sister, Ione Olson of Minnesota; and her children, Janet Finley of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Michael J. Finley of Odessa and Joanne Marine of Forked River, N.J. She had four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, March 3, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, Laurel Street and King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, with a reception to follow at the house.
Burial will be in Old Drawyers Cemetery, Odessa.

Helen Louise Kellam,
Mt. Zion member
Helen Louise Kellam, 76, of Salisbury, Md., died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Mrs. Kellam was born in Painter, Va., daughter of the late James and Emma Robinson Wyatt.
She was employed by the family of Dorothy Nagel for 30 years, and by the families of Rob Satorio and Bruce Todd, all of Salisbury.
Mrs. Kellam was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Painter.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Kellam, in August 1988.
She is survived by a son, Elwood Wyatt of Delmar; three grandchildren, Claudia Reese and her husband, Edward, of Lewes, Kenneth Wyatt Sr. and his wife Dorothy, and Elwood Wyatt Jr., whom she reared as her own, all of Salisbury; five great-grandchildren; a brother, David Wyatt of Painter; a sister and brother-in-law, Corrine and Preston Sturgis of Painter; a sister-in-law, Magalene Wyatt of Painter; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24, in Wesley Temple United Methodist Church, West Road, Salisbury, where friends may call at noon. Burial will be in Springhill Memory Gardens, Hebron, Md.


Ralph F. Nelson,
aviation pioneer
Ralph Frederic Nelson, 71, aviation pioneer, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2206, in Bethany Beach.
He was born March 1, 1934, in Beverly, Mass., to the late Graham Thomson Nelson and Mary Anne Bunk.
Ralph, affectionately known as “Beaver” by his grade-school classmates, started his career in aviation early by soloing in a J-2 Club on skis on his 16th birthday. After he graduated from Beverly High School in 1952, he joined the Army and served during the Korean Conflict as an infantry tactics instructor.
In 1954, he left the Army and used his G.I. bill benefits to earn his aviation instructor rating to become a University of Illinois flight instructor.
He flew his way through college, became a member of the Alpha Eta Rho International Aviation Fraternity, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in speech in 1958.
Two days after graduation, he was working for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) in Bethesda, Md. Over the next 35 years, he rose to AOPA’s senior executive vice president while initiating and managing a wide range of general aviation safety programs, including the national program of flight training clinics, training more than 100,000 pilots and being a founder of the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI).
His distinguished aviation awards include Alpha Eta Rho International Aviation Fraternity Award, Washington Air Derby Association Trophy, FAA’s Certificate of Commendation, National Air Transportation Association Meritorious Service Award, Department of Transportation Distinguished Service Award for Flight Instructor Programs, Aviation and Space Technology Award, Flight Safety Foundation Award, National Safety Council best training film of the year, FAA’s Distinguished Service Award and the Aviation Elder Statesman Award for lifetime service to aviation safety.
In 1994, he retired to his favorite beach home and continued his community service on the Sussex Shore Beach Association Board, managing community security and taking care of the beach lifeguards.
He is survived by his son Graham, son Ralph Jr., daughter Pam, daughter Sandy, and seven grandchildren.
All services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium in Lewes.
Donations may be made to the National Association of Flight Instructors Foundation (NAFI Foundation), 35 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus, OH  43215 where arrangements are being made to dedicate a “Ralph Nelson Memorial Flight Instructor Scholarship.”

Doris Mae Calhoun,
retired crossing guard
Doris Mae Calhoun, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2006.
A resident of Claymont for more than 50 years, Doris was born March 23, 1924 in Marshallton to the late Edgar and Frances Dill.
In 1939, Doris wed the love of her life, Frederick M. Calhoun Sr. Together they spent many a summer in Oxford, Md., boating on the river and enjoying the warm company of their numerous friends and family.
After Frederick’s passing in 1965, Doris spent her years seeing to the needs of those who loved her most. Indeed, after a dear friend became ill, Doris spent a number of years giving her heart and soul in caring for her friend until her death. Additionally, Doris served New Castle County as a dedicated crossing guard in the Claymont area for more than 20 years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Mitchell; a twin brother Edwin (Bud) Dill and her son-in-law, David R. King.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Doris is survived by two sons, Frederick M. Calhoun Jr. and his wife, Sheila, of Lewes and Richard A. Calhoun and his wife, Helen, of Wilmington; and a daughter, Ruthann Calhoun King, with whom she lived; five grandchildren, Frederick M. III, Cynthia, Tracie, Kristina, and Lisa; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Madelon Newton, of Rising Sun, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the McCrery Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike in Talleyville, (Rt. 202-south of Silverside Road), where friends may call after 10 a.m. Internment will follow at Lawn Croft Cemetery in Linwood, Pa.

Paul Charles Rowley,
loving father
Paul Charles Rowley, 48, of Townsend, was chosen to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 17, 2006.
Mr. Rowley was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a friend to all those who knew him. He is at peace now and will be missed greatly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Rowley and Elizabeth Holland; his stepfather, Jim Holland; and a sister, Gail Holland.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; two daughters, Katelyn and Laura; a son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Patricia Rowley of Milton; a granddaughter, Sarah Rowley; a sister, Sharon Schmittinger of Dover; two brothers, Mark Rowley of Buford, Ga., and John Rowley of Dover; his wife’s parents, Jake and Mary Hoster of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 15 E. Green St., Middletown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Old St. Anne’s Cemetery, Middletown.

Jack Phillips,

Jack Phillips, 66, of Rehoboth Beach, departed this life on Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
He was born on April 7, 1939, in Lewes, son of the late John T. Phillips and Mildred (Smith) Phillips.
He graduated Rehoboth High School class of 1957 and was very active in sports. He was a 1957 participant in the Blue Gold Game and still holds a record for that game. He then attended Wake Forest University. For many years he served on the Rehoboth Beach Life Guard Squad. He was a member of the Jefferson Masonic Lodge, Lewes. Fishing, hunting and outdoor sports were very special to him.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Marianne M. (Vehvilainen) Phillips; his daughters Carla and Sharon; and his son, J.P.
Graveside Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006 at All Saints Cemetery, Route 23, Angola.

Elizabeth S. Major,
Eastern Star member
Elizabeth S. (Smith) Major, 97 years young of Rehoboth Beach, died Saturday, Feb.18, 2006 at her late residence in Rehoboth Beach.
Mrs. Major was born at home on Sept. 30, 1908, in Chester, Pa. She attended Rehoboth Presbyterian Church of Midway, and was a member of Order Of The Eastern Star Unity Chapter 16, the Village Improvement Association, the Cape Henlopen Senior Center, and the Lewes Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry W. Major, in 1974
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth M. Suter of Rehoboth Beach; her grandsons, K. Wesley Suter and Richard Suter; a sister, Ruth McKenney; a sister-in-law, Clara Smith; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services with Rev. Keith Offen officiating will be held at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Kathryn Born,
avid gardener
Kathryn Born, 89, of Towson, Md., Rehoboth Beach and Vero Beach, Fla. died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006 of congestive heart failure at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She lived at the Blakehurst Community.
Born Kathryn Wilson in Columbus, Ohio, where her father Walter had established the Wilson Floors Company, she graduated from Bexley High School. She came to Baltimore sight unseen to attend Goucher College. A member of the class of 1938, she met her husband Richard during her senior year. They were married in October following her graduation. Mr. Born, who became president of his family’s business, Herman Born and Sons, died in 1991. She maintained ownership of the Wilson Floors Company in Columbus while living in Baltimore for 50 years.
Kay Born, a homemaker, was an avid gardener and flower arranger collecting may blue ribbons. A golfer and bridge player, her hobbies included painting water colors, knitting and doing needlework and trying new recipes. While spending summers at Rehoboth Beach, she enjoyed fishing so long as she didn’t have to prepare or eat the catch. As her family remembers, she loved preparing for holidays and having fun at a good party. She was a member of the Murray Hill Garden Club, the Roland Park Women’s Club and the Three Arts Society.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Born Edwards, and her son-in-law Jack Edwards of Columbus, Ohio; her son and daughter-in-law Richard Wilson and Elaine Born; her grandchildren, Brooke Hally Perkins of San Francisco, Calif.; Kate Hally MacPherson of Hingham, Mass.; Hedy Born of San Francisco and Richard E. Born of Baltimore, Md.; her great-grandchildren, Wilson MacPherson, Libby MacPherson, Charles Perkins and John Perkins.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., on her birthday, Friday, Feb. 24, at The Church of Good Shepherd.

Racey O. Paugh,
retired from DuPont Company
Racey O. Paugh, 62, of Georgetown, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Paugh was born in Georgetown, son of Adam C. and Marian (Jester) Paugh of Georgetown.
He was a Georgetown High School graduate with the class of 1961.
Mr. Paugh worked for the DuPont Co., Seaford, for 34 years, retiring in 1996.
He never met a stranger and his family and friends enjoyed his ability to tell a good joke. Even through his courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease he never lost his since of humor. He enjoyed camping. He loved his family and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Paugh was a member of the American Legion Post 28, Long Neck. He was a former member of the Georgetown Jaycees.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joyce (Reynolds) Paugh; a daughter and son-in-law, Keri and Tony Davidson of Georgetown; two grandsons, Derek Davidson and Dylan Davidson, both of Georgetown; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Layton Richard and Ruth Paugh Sr. of Georgetown, and Ralph and Susie Paugh of Parkersburg, W. Va.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Cindy and Terry Reynolds of Milton, Debbie and Dennis Chorman of Millsboro, Judy and Dallas Reynolds of Milton, and Mary Ann and Charles Reynolds of Milton; and numerous nieces, nephews and loving friends.
Services were held in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, Georgetown, with burial in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

Gilbert W. ‘Poppa’ Perry Sr.,

Gilbert W. “Poppa” Perry Sr., 83, of Middletown died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, in Sunbridge, Elkton, Md. He was 83.
Mr. Perry was born July 10, 1922, in Annapolis, Md., where he grew up.
He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1943 with a bachelor of science degree in agronomy.
Mr. Perry then entered the Army Air Corps, where he served until the end of World War II.
After marrying, he moved in 1947 to Allentown, Pa., where he worked as a field representative for Campbell Soup Co. He was transferred to Middletown in the late 1940s. After leaving Campbell Soup, Mr. Perry spent the remainder of his career in food service management, first owning the Wagon Wheel Restaurant, then working for the University of Delaware and Hodgson Vo-Tech School.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, and cooking for friends and family. Especially important to him were his grandchildren’s academic, athletic and life accomplishments.
Mr. Perry had been an active supporter of Middletown sports since the 1950s, only most recently missing events due to his declining health. He was a past member of Middletown Lions Club, served on Middletown School Board and was a member of Bethesda Methodist Church, serving as a trustee.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Lynn in 1951; a son, Gilbert W. “Gibby” Perry Jr. in 1996; and his first wife, Eleanor “Gail” Perry, whom he had married in 1947, in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Perry; a son, Geoffrey Perry; a daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Alfred Scarpitti of Middletown; six grandchildren, Andrew Hall of Hong Kong, Jenna Hall, Brant Perry, Shelley Perry and Jimmy Daly, all of Middletown, and Lauren Perry of West Palm Beach, Fla.; six stepchildren, Mariann Baker of Lincoln, John Foley of Dover, Virginia Kauffman of Lewes, Richard Foley of Warwick, Md., Debra Foley of Elkton, Md., and Elizabeth Watkins of Newark; 17 stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday in Bethesda Methodist Church, East Main Street, Middletown.

Alfred Harrison Sturgis,

Alfred Harrison Sturgis, 91, of Milton, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, in his home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Sturgis was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Dagsboro, son of the late Maggie Shockley and George Sturgis.
He was a member of the U.S. Army, serving from 1943-1946, in the European theater of World War II, with the 3544 Quartermaster Truck Co. As corporal, he received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
He retired in 1978, from the state of Delaware, for which he was a truck driver for the State Highway Department at Gravel-Hill and Ellendale yards.
Mr. Sturgis was a member of Prospect AME Church in Georgetown, where he served as a trustee and male chorus member.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 15 brothers and sisters, of whom he was the youngest.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Primrose E. (Stevenson) Sturgis; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa E.S. and Ronald Berry of Magnolia; three grandchildren, Ronald B. Berry III of Wilmington, Alonna D. Berry and Ryan H. Berry, both of Magnolia; a sister-in-law, Elsye Burney of Milford; a brother-in-law Howard C. Stevenson of Milton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services were held in the Bethel AME Church, Mulberry Street, Milton, with burial in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South, near Millsboro.

John J. ‘Jack’ Teasdale, 73

John J. “Jack” Teasdale, 73, of Millsboro and Muhlenberg Township, Pa., died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, in ManorCare, Laureldale, where he had been since January.
He was born in Reading, Pa., son of the late John J. and Laura (Miller) Teasdale.
Mr. Teasdale was a 1960 graduate of Kutztown University with a bachelor’s of science in education. In 1966 he earned his master’s degree in education from Temple University. He was a 1971 graduate from the University of South Carolina with a master’s degree in mathematics. In 1975 he graduated from Lehigh University with a master’s in administration. He had also taught at the University of South Carolina through a fellowship, while working on his doctorate.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Teasdale was employed by Reading School District for a total of 33 years. He was first employed as a teacher in Northwest Junior High School from 1960-72, teaching mathematics. Later he was an administrator for the Reading School District for 17 years. From 1972-86 he was the vice principal at Northwest Junior High School, he then became the vice principal for Southwest Junior High School from 1986-89. He retired from the Reading School District as a teacher of mathematics at the Vo-Tech School in 1993.
After his retirement he was a professor of algebra at Reading Area Community College and a professor of mathematics at Penn State, Berks Campus.
Mr. Teasdale was a 32nd Degree Mason, Lodge 62 A.F.&A.M. in West Reading.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ocean View, Md., the Elks Lodge in Lewes, and American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro. He was a member of the Indian River Yacht Club in Delaware and served as Commodore in 2001-02.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Anne (Miller) Teasdale, in 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Ardelle L. (Clay) Jones-Teasdale; three sons, Peter Teasdale of Jonestown, Pa., Thomas Teasdale of Mohnton, Pa., and John Teasdale of Reading; one stepson, Craig Jones of Blythewood, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Vickie Jones of New York City, and Kelly (Jones) Lountzis of Sinking Spring, Pa.; three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Services were held in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring.

Genevieve Lenore (Bliss) Kohn, 93, of Milton died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, in Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Kohn was born in Beloit, Wis., daughter of the late Ira and Mabel (Churchill) Bliss.
During World War II, she worked at Willow Run Defense Plant in Michigan.
Mrs. Kohn was a phenomenal homemaker, mother and wife. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and quilting, as well as traveling all over the United States with her husband, who was the professional children’s entertainer, “Squeegee the Clown.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Carl Kohn; three brothers, Lester Bliss, Harold Bliss and Harlan Bliss; her beloved Susie Dog I, Jing the bird, and Susie Dog II.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Genevieve Mergan of Milton, one granddaughter, Genevieve Marie Mergan-Hanna; and a great-grandson, Dustin Hanna of Middletown.
Graveside services were held in Mount Morris Cemetery, Mich.

Paul E. McKinney,

Paul E. McKinney, 85, of Millsboro, passed away unexpectedly in his home Monday, Feb. 13, 2006.
He was born in East Drumore Township in Lancaster County, Pa., son of the late John and Mary Bleacher McKinney.
Formerly of Mount Joy, Pa., he and his wife, Marcelline moved to Delaware in 1990. He was married to Marcelline J. Zerphey for 38 years.
Mr. McKinney was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the 526th Rocket Field Artillery Battalion. He fought in the invasion of Normandy and battles in northern France, the Rhineland and Ardennes. Paul received the European African Middle Eastern Theater ribbon and four Bronze Stars.
Paul worked 44 years for the former Federal Mogul, Lancaster, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of Conley’s United Methodist Church, Lewes, the Elizabethtown Moose, Lodge 596, the Hubley Club, Lancaster, and a life member of the Mount Joy Veterans of Foreign War, Post 5752. Mr. McKinney was also a member of the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 and a life member of the Oak Orchard Riverdale American Legion, Post 28.
He was an avid boater and fisherman, Mr. McKinney loved the seashore. He enjoyed growing roses and hunting. Mr. McKinney and his wife also enjoyed traveling in their RV throughout the United States and Canada and spending winters in Fort Myers, Fla., for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond McKinney.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a loving companion, Molly; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Sam Kreider of Quarryville, Pa.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Barry L. and Shelley Beaner Shertzer from Lititz, Pa., and Samuel L. and Sandra Hainley Shertzer of Loveland, Colo.; two grandchildren, Angela Shertzer and Samuel Shertzer; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Hazel and Bill Reitzel of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Ruth Flowers of New Providence, Pa., Helen Hassleback and Grace Hess of Peqway, Pa.; a son, Thomas and daughter, Carol and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the Sheetz Funeral Home Inc., Mount Joy, Pa., with the Rev. Randy Booth officiating.
Burial was in Silver Spring Cemetery, West Hempfield Township.
Veteran’s honors were provided by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, Lancaster.

Sa’Nahya “Naya” Dynasty Williams, 4, passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2006.
Naya was born June 20, 2001, to Tykesha Williams and Nathan Carter.
Naya was a child full of life and energy. She never met a stranger. Naya would talk to you and greet you with a smile that would light up the room. Once you met her, you would never forget her.
She attended Milford Head Start Program, which she looked forward to going to on a daily basis.
She is survived by her mother, Tykesha Williams of Milford; her father and stepmother, Nathan and Rushelle Carter of Lewes; a loving brother, Deonta Williams; two sisters, Akyah Carter of New Jersey, and Natalie Carter of Lewes; a loving uncle, Victor Williams of Lincoln; a loving aunt, Andrea Carter of Milton; paternal grandparents Lisa Carter of Milton and Rufus Carter III of Lewes; maternal grandparents, Boyd and Rosie Williams of Lincoln; maternal great-great grandmother, Victoria Williams of Lincoln; maternal great-grandmother, Lula McMillan; maternal great-grandparents, Leon and Leola McMillan; paternal great-grandparents, Rufus and Ella Carter of Lewes; great-great-grandmother, Mildred Cottman of Harbeson; great-great-grandfather, James Hood Milton; and a host of great-aunts; great-uncles; cousins and friends.

Christel Louise Palekar, 17, of Milton, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 13, 2006.
Christel was born on Nov. 13, 1988 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Christel was a student at Howard T. Ennis School. She was well known for a smiling face and infectious laugh.  Swimming, watching Barney and holding a balloon were her pleasures in life. She had an abundance of stuffed animals, which were always close at hand. 
Christal participated in the Special Olympics and won three gold medals for bowling and two gold medals for track & field. She won best costume at the Rehoboth Seawitch Festival in both 1997 and  1999.
She also loved to participate in the Easter Seals Cruise for Kids. Christel attended the Lewes Church of Christ. 
She is survived by her parents April and Bhaskar Palekar; her caretakers and second parents, Mary and Dean Taylor; a sister, Kelly C. Palekar, a brother, Thomas B. Palekar, and a niece, Hailey Sidibe.  Also surviving are Aunt Nina Palekar of N.J.; Aunt Christel and Uncle Frank Hiney of N.H.; Uncle Charles and Caren Day of Pa.; and Uncle Jeff of Pa.; and 18 cousins: Wendy, Tammy, Brian, Christen, Tina, Jenny, Brenda, Charles, Nandu, Nilima, Udatta, Anjali, Rohan, Rohit, Rachael, Nathan, Patrick and Alexandra.
A private service in celebration of Christel’s life was held at the Lewes Church of Christ, Milton.

Donald G. Hanning,
retired FBI agent
Donald G. Hanning, 93, of Bethany Beach and formerly of Chevy Chase, Md., died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Hanning was a retired special agent for the FBI. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army where he received the Bronze Star. He was also a prisoner of war in the Philippine Islands.
Mr. Hanning was a graduate of Taft School in Watertown, Ct., and a 1937 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, the American Ex-Prisoners of War and the society of former FBI agents.
He was also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Josehine B. Hanning, in 1995.
He is survived by two sons, Michael J. Hanning and Patrick H. Hanning; a sister, Regina Storm; and a grandson, Benjamin Hanning.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Route 26, Bethany Beach, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Burial will be private.

Merrill Jester,

Merrill Jester, 74, passed away at home in Georgetown, Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006.
Mr. Jester was born in Georgetown, the son of the late Layton and Carrie May Fisher Jester.
He worked for many years as a carpenter for Walls Builders in Georgetown, retiring in 1990.
He attended Grace United Methodist Church in Georgetown and was a 53-year member of the Georgetown Fire Company, Station 77, where he served on the board of directors, as custodian and on numerous committees. He was known as Uncle Merrill to all his fellow members. As a young man he was the manager of the Georgetown County Seaters basketball team.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Aubrey Jester; and two sisters, Ramona Michel and Jeanne Bunting.

He is survived by three nephews and their wives, Layton Richard Paugh Sr. and his wife, Ruth, of Georgetown, Ralph L. Paugh and his wife, Susie, of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Racey O. Paugh, who passed away Tuesday, and his wife, Joyce, of Georgetown; a sister-in-law, Estella Jester of Milton; three nieces, Sharon Jones and Carol Anderson of Milton and Connie Hadder of Seaford; and several great-nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services with full Firemen’s Honors will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17.
Interment will be in Union Cemetery.

Robert J. Bennett,
retired postmaster
Robert J. Bennett, 76, of Bridgeville, passed away peacefully in Select Specialty Hospital in Wilmington, Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006.
Mr. Bennett was born April 30, 1929, to Seth and Grace Hill Bennett. Mr. Bennett lived his entire life in Bridgeville and was a very active member of his community. He was a member of the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company for more than 50 years, serving as president from 1956 to 1963. He was responsible for bringing ambulance service to Bridgeville in 1947. He was an active member of the Delaware Fire Police as well.
He was employed by the United States Postal Service from 1945 until his retirement in 1984. He held positions as Postmaster in Dover and Rehoboth Beach during this time. He was a former national vice president of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States and a former president of the Delaware Postmasters Association. He also held the office of president and director of the Southern Delaware Postal Employees Federal Credit Union.
Bob was also a professional photographer, a career he continued after serving as an Army Signal Corp photographer from 1951 to 1953 in Germany. A member of the Professional Photographers of America, his photographs appeared in publications all over the world, and won many awards over the years.
Mr. Bennett was a former member of the Bridgeville Lions Club, Bridgeville Kiwanis Club, Rehoboth Art League, Seaford Golf and Country Club, Bridgeville Town Commission, American Legion Post 26, and former board member of Nanticoke Health Services. He was currently a director of the Delaware State Fair, director of the Bridgeville Historical Society, and a member of Union United Methodist Church. Bob was also an avid stamp and First Day Cover collector.
Bob, Dad, and Pop-Pop was a gentle, caring spirit who loved life and lived it to the fullest. He loved his family dearly and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, the former Eleanor Hamstead; a daughter, Donna Holefelder and her husband Michael of Bear; a son, Rodney and his wife Amanda of Greenwood; three grandchildren: Brian, Brandon and Lauren; and five step-grandchildren: Matthew, Miranda, Mali, Erin, and Jordan.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists who cared for Mr. Bennett in his final days. A special thank you for all the cards, prayers, and words of encouragement from all who cared. You all know who you are.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m., at the Union United Methodist Church, Market and Laws streets, Bridgeville, where friends and family may call from 1-2 p.m., at the church. Jean Irene Glover Sutor, 99, of Rehoboth Beach, died Thursday, Feb.  9, 2006, at Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach. 
Mrs. Sutor was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., daughter of the late William and Sarah McKinley Glover.  She had formerly worked in the fabrics department  at Strawbridge and Clothier Department Store in Wilmington.   She was a member of the Eastern Star in Andover, N. Y.
Mrs.  Sutor is  survived by a daughter, Beverly A. Sutor Wittenberg of Rehoboth Beach; a daughter-in-Law-Shirley Sutor of Newark; a brother-in-law, Howard Heim of Millsboro; two nieces, Joan Hollaway of Selbyville and Donna Rae Forgash of Salisbury, Md.;  three grandchildren,  Bonnie Wharton of Middletown; Michael Sutor of Newark; and Raymond Sutor of Lancaster, Pa.;  and five great-grandchildren.

Genevieve (Caserta) Messick, 61, of Salisbury, Md., died Thursday Feb. 9, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Mrs. Messick was born on June 15, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the late Dominic and Helen (McCann) Caserta.
She was raised in Southwest Philadelphia and graduated from West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. After graduation, she moved to Rehoboth Beach and was a longtime resident of the Rehoboth area. She was a homemaker who enjoyed spoiling her grandkids, playing bingo and going to the slots.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Messick was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Wayne Messick, in 2003.
Mrs. Messick is survived by a son, Andrew Messick of Milton, two  daughters: Shannan Baucom of Lewes and Amanda Rogers of Seaford; a brother, Jaime Manolakis of Newark and six grandchildren.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, followed by graveside services at 11 a.m. at St. Peters Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.

Emery W. Tetrault,

Emery W. (Ted) Tetrault, 75, of Lewes, died after a long illness Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at Lewes Convalescent Center, Lewes, Delaware.
Ted was born Sept. 27, 1930, in Worcester, Mass., the son of Emery and Flora Tetrault. He graduated from Assumption College in 1952 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force that year. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1956. He later received his master’s degree in linguistics from American University.
Ted and Joan married in 1955 and moved to Washington, D.C., where he began a 40-year career with the National Security Agency. He was instrumental in developing many of the federal government’s foreign language teaching programs at the National Cryptologic School. He was nationally recognized as an expert in adult language learning, teaching methodologies and translation. Teaching was his love, and he taught unprecedented numbers of cryptologic language analysts in his language, linguistics and methodology programs. His work influenced virtually every National Cryptologic School foreign language instructor and language course. Due to the nature of his work only his colleagues know fully his service to his country.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan; his children, William of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joseph of Baltimore, Md., Theresa Moller of Washington, D.C., Robert of Rockville, Md., and Julie of Laurel, Md.; and four grandchildren.
A private family service was held Saturday at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 520 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, Maryland. Interment will be private at Delaware Veteran’s Cemetery.

Carl Lewis Day, 53, of Georgetown, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, in Fredericksburg, Texas.
Mr. Day was born Nov. 8, 1952 in Wellsville, N.Y., to Lewis and Gloria Day. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1971. He was in the U.S. Army in the military police from 1971 to 1975. Carl moved to Maryland and then started working in Delaware at the Department of Corrections in 1979, eventually working in the K-9 department.
He enjoyed coaching Pop Warner Football and was involved in other various community activities.
Carl is survived by his wife, Jane Stevenson Day; two children, Lewis Day and Katy Day; and a brother, Steven Day and his wife Ellen.
An informal memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Marvel Carriage Museum, 510 S. Bedford Street, Georgetown.

Linda Elaine Hickman, 58, of Rock Hall, Md., passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, surrounded by her family in Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis..
Mrs. Hickman was born July 17, 1947, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Lloyd C. and Marian (Sammons) Spencer.
Mrs. Hickman was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Hickman; and a son, John Allen Hobbs.
She is survived by a daughter, Michele Price of Worton; two sons, Anthony M. Figurelli of Jackson, Fla., and Vincent McCracken Sr., of Chestertown; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Robert Spencer of Milton and Steven and Bobbi Spencer of Millsboro; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Bill Janicki of Wilmington, Evelyn Spencer of Milton, Janice Spencer of Millsboro and Mary King of Millsboro; seven grandchildren, Taylor Price, Christan Price, Kaylee Figurelli, Brianna Figurelli, Vincent McCracken Jr., Bruce Patricella and Jessica Quinones; and a niece, Buffy Janicki of Wilmington.
Services were held in the Chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home in Felton, with burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Ruth A. Sutherland Butler,

Ruth Aaker Sutherland Butler, 89, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Bozeman, Mont., passed away Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center.
Ruth grew up in Bozeman and attended the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif., as well as the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.  She retired from the Registrar’s Office at Montana State University in 1983 after 23 years of service. Ruth was an avid reader all of her life and enjoyed being outside, especially in the mountains.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Sutherland, in 1950, and by her second husband, Art Butler in 1999. 
She is survived by her brother, Ralph Aaker of Boulder, Colo.; four children, Sidney Sutherland of Brush Praire, Wash.; Virginia Gallup of Castle Rock, Colo.; Marge Burton of Georgetown; and Judy Melson of Rehoboth Beach; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
All funeral services are private.  Interment will be at a later date in Bozeman.  Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.

Lawrence G. Bradford,

Lawrence G. Bradford, 60, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Claymont, passed away December 14, 2005, after a battle with cancer.
Larry served his country, joining the U.S. Navy, and served on the USS Truckee in the Mediterranean Sea and in Norfolk, Va. While in the Navy, he received a letter of commendation for his efforts trying to save the life of a boy who was struck by a train. Prior to moving to Florida, Larry was employed as a union ironworker with Local 451 in Elsmere. In Florida, he worked in various construction positions and also ran B&C Tile Company. Larry enjoyed watching Georgia football and NASCAR, and also enjoyed playing golf.
Larry was predeceased by his mother, Elaine L. Bradford.
Surviving him is his father, James H. Bradford of Rehoboth Beach; daughter, Michele Leek, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; sons, David, of Orlando, Fla., and Lawrence Jr. (BJ), of Rehoboth Beach; stepdaughter and caregiver, Deborah Fitzwater, of Jacksonville; stepson, Wayne Boswell; and six grandchildren. Larry is also survived by his brothers, James, of Portland, Ore., Robert of Bear, and Joseph of Lincoln; and sisters, Lois Nowell of Middletown, and Vicki Bennett of Rising Sun, Md.

Alice M. Sylvester,

Alice M Sylvester, 63, of Long Neck, died suddenly Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Christiana Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she lived in Philadelphia, Springfield and Drexel Hill, Pa., before making her family home in Wilmington, where she lived for 32 years.
Mrs. Sylvester then enjoyed her final years, realizing a lifelong dream, to live by the water in Long Neck. A 1960 graduate of West Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Sylvester retired as a customer service representative from Verizon, and had also worked for First Union, Corestates, and MBNA. She most recently enjoyed the company of dear friends while working part-time at QVC in Rehoboth Beach, and seasonally at Boyd’s Flowers in Wilmington.
Active in the Knights of Columbus with her husband, the late John J. Sylvester, she was a member of the ladies auxiliary at Christopher Council 3182, and later at St. Michael’s Council 4548. Mrs. Sylvester also loved sharing her love of cooking with her beloved family and friends.
Daughter of the late Marie F. Malloy, Mrs. Sylvester is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Alice V. “Ronnie” and John C. Mason, of Hockessin, and Ellyn M. and James A Custer, of Wilmington; and by grandchildren Ashley Anne, James Alan, Jonathan Michael, and Lauren Veronica.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 10, at St. Elizabeth Church, Cedar and S. Clayton streets, Wilmington, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.

Charles A. Marsch,

Charles A. Marsch, 80, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. 
He was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Charles and Florence (Monge) Marsch. 
Mr. Marsch spent 33 years working for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1980 as postmaster at Bala Cnywyd, Pa. He was an Army veteran serving in World War II, who received a Purple Heart as well as other medals. He was highly regarded for his advocacy work for manufactured housing owners and served as an adviser to the president of the Manufactured Housing Association. He was a member of the following organizations: National Association of Post Masters, Cape Henlopen Elks, AARP, Philadelphia chapter of 63rd Infantry Division (Army), Disabled American Vets, American Legion Post 28, Veterans of Foreign Wars-Post 7447, Rehoboth Bay Tenants Association and St. Edmond’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Anna M. (Goerg) Marsch of Rehoboth Beach; three sons: Charles Marsch and his wife Barbara of Green Lane, Pa., Leonard Marsch and his wife Debbie of Lewes, and Richard Marsch and his wife Stephanie of Lewes; seven grandchildren, Chatham, Jason, Jonathan, Ricky, Jessica, Nicholas, and Jacob; and one sister, Elizabeth Shank of Newtown Square, Pa.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach, with interment with military honors to follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery on Pilottown Road in Lewes. 

David F. McManus Sr.,

David F. McManus Sr., 79, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. 
He was born May 19, 1926, the third child of the late Dr. James  P. and Margaret McManus of Bridgeport, Conn. 
He was raised and schooled in Bridgeport but graduated from Central High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in 1944.  His primary employment was in the food industry.  He was employed by Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company for 30 years.  For 20 of those years, he was the store manager for the A&P on Second Street in Lewes.  After retiring from A&P, he was with a food brokerage firm - Randall and Associates - for three years.  With the encouragement of his wife Evelyn McManus, he purchased a Pepperidge Farm franchise, which he had for 18 years before retiring for the second time. 
Dave was a man of service.  During the Korean War he volunteered for the Ground Observer Corps (GOC) and he was also a member of the Civilian Air Patrol (CAP).  While living in Salisbury, he was chairman of the Youth Athletic Committee, an Elks member and also on the Salisbury Little League board of directors.  After moving his family to Lewes in 1955, he continued to be active in civic affairs.  He was cofounder of the Lewes Little League with Percy Burton in the late 1950s. 
He was an assistant scoutmaster and merit badge counselor, and he founded an Explorer Post, serving a total of 13 years with the Boy Scouts.  During his years with the Scouts, he was selected to take a troop to the National Jamboree at Valley Forge, Pa., in 1964. 
He was also a founding member of the Star of the Sea Knights of Columbus, Rehoboth Beach, and a member of Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540.   Dave volunteered in the Beebe Medical Center print shop in the mid-1990s for a couple of years.  He was active in St. Edmond’s of Rehoboth Beach for many years, where he and his family attended Mass regularly. 
Dave was predeceased by his beloved wife, Evelyn (Hall) McManus; his son Christopher; two brothers, James and Thomas; a sister Patricia; and a niece Jane.  
He is survived by three sons, David F. Jr. of Seaford, Timothy S. and his wife Jody of Roxana, and Kevin B. and his wife Sally of Dagsboro; a daughter Margaret McVey of Lewes; six grandchildren: Zachary McManus, Meghan McVey, Bobby McVey III, Caitlin McVey, Timothy McManus and Haley McManus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, King Charles and Laurel streets, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call one hour prior to Mass.  Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.

William E. Kuntz

Retired Col. William E. Kuntz, 69, of Rehoboth Beach, died Jan. 31, 2006, in South Palm Beach, Fla., after a brief battle with cancer.
Col. Kuntz was born April 18, 1936, in Punxsutawney, Pa., to Samuel and Annabelle Kuntz.
He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1958 where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and ROTC. He completed the Army War College in 1970. Col. Kuntz was in the Army Reserves for 38 years, until he retired in 1989. His last assignment was at the Pentagon.
He was employed by Deloitte, Haskins & Sells in June 1958, and he became a partner in June 1975. During his career, he worked in the following offices: Los Angeles; Johannesburg, South Africa; Omaha, Neb; Des Moines, Iowa; New York; Baltimore; and Washington.
His civic/professional involvements included mentor to young adults, participation in stamp clubs, coin clubs, INCA inventors’ group, churches, volunteering for Delaware and Florida hospices and at the New Life Thrift Shop.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Caroline Sloan.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara Blohm Kuntz; a daughter, Laura Bailey of Lewes; his grandchildren, Justin and Hannah; and brothers Carl of California and Sam and Joe of Colorado; and his loving extended family.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach.

Sara Crossley Emerson,

Sara Crossley Emerson, 89, of Dover, passed away, following a courageous battle with cancer, Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, in Rehoboth Beach, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Emerson was born Nov. 24, 1916, daughter of the late state Sen. Dudley and Ethel Crossley, then of Clayton.
She was a 1934 graduate of Smyrna High School, where she captained her varsity basketball team. She earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics from the University of Delaware in 1938.
She was a fine athlete in her youth and remained a graceful competitor throughout her life. She was a skilled and beautiful knitter, an accomplished bridge player and a loyal fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. She possessed a dry wit and a warm, easygoing manner that endeared her to many and earned her a wide circle of friends. Most importantly, she was dedicated to her family. She was a much-loved and respected wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her happiest times were spent caring for her family and sharing their interests.
Mrs. Emerson was a frequent volunteer at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, where she was a charter member of the junior board.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Crossley.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Ralph Sudler Emerson; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Neal Moerschel of Rehoboth Beach; a son and daughter-in-law, R. Pennell and Sharon Emerson of Rehoboth Beach; a sister, Thelma Tarburton of Dover; three grandchildren, Frederick A. Townsend, Stuart E. Townsend and R.P. Chadwick Emerson; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be private.
Burial will be in the cemetery of Camden Friends Meeting House.

R. Pierce Russell, 86, of Lewes, passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2006 at Harbor Health Center, Lewes.
Mr. Russell was born in Milton, the son of the late Plaford and Lillie Reed Russell. He grew up in the Milton area.
During the war, he worked as a mechanic at Fort Miles in Lewes. Later, he worked as a carpenter for nearly 40 years in the Lewes and Rehoboth areas. He was an active member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth for 62 years.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean Davis Russell; a daughter, Linda R. Griffin and her husband Glenn H. of Seaford; a sister, Rae Russell of Doylestown, Pa.; a grandson, Russell G. Griffin; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Donald L. Ross, 58, of Milford, passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at home.
Mr. Ross was born in Felton, the son of Pearl Elizabeth Legates Ross of Lincoln and the late James T. Ross Sr., who passed away in 1997.
Mr. Ross was a laborer for Sea Watch, Milford, and had installed carpet for many years with both Callaway Furniture in Harrington and Webster Furniture in Lewes.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Ronald Ross, in 1974, and by a sister, Debra Dutt, in 2001.
He is survived by his mother; a son, Delbert Ross; a daughter, Amy Ross; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Brenda and Wayne Sennett of Ellendale, Norma Warren of Lincoln and Pam and Daniel Siok of Milford; and a brother, James Ross Jr. of Felton.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, in the Chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 W. Front Street, Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier.

She attended Laurel Middle School.
She was involved with Easter Seals in her earlier years, where she had the opportunity of meeting Tom Jones and The Beatles. She loved the Beatles.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a brother, Rick Elliott of Laurel; a nephew, Ricky Elliott of Seaford; two aunts and an uncle, Louise Hastings of Seaford and Faye and Bill Fields of Salisbury, and an uncle, Sam Elliott of Rehoboth Beach.

She was employed at Kraft Food for 17 years in Dover before retiring.
Ms. Justice loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Dickerson Chapel.
She sang on the senior choir and gospel choir.

James H. Cronic, 77, of Laurel, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Mr. Cronic was born in Cullman, Ala., son of the late James A. and Cula (Allen) Cronic.
He was raised in Georgia and moved to Georgetown in 1965.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a past member of the Sussex American Legion Post 8, Georgetown.
He was a security guard for the Sussex County administration for 11 years.
Mr. Cronic enjoyed conversation, NASCAR races and the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Julia Cronic; two sisters; and a brother.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ofelia (Isaza) Cronic; seven sons, James Cronic Jr., of Milton, Kenneth Cronic of Georgetown, Allen Cronic of Laurel, Clifford Cronic of Laurel, Terry Cronic of Harbeson, Steve Cronic of Marietta, Ga., and Leroy Absher of Georgetown; two daughters, Donna Suttles and Carol Ashley, both of Clinton, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, Billie Jo Cronic, Emily Cronic, Vannessa Cronic, Melisa Lanning, Amanda Suttles, Jeremy Cronic, Colin “C.J.” Cronic, Tyler Cronic and Isaiah Cronic; and a great-granddaughter, Haley Steele.

Charlotte Marie Brown,

Charlotte Marie Brown, 56, of Laurel, died on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at home, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Mrs. Brown was born in Pensacola, Fla. to Arthur and Marie Harris.
She graduated from Caesar Rodney High School in 1968, and attended the University of Delaware.
She volunteered for Epworth Christian School in Laurel from 1979-1981. In the fall of 1981, Charlotte became the kindergarten teacher at Epworth Christian School and for the next 22 and a half years, taught kindergarten until January 2004. Charlotte was a member of, and enjoyed working with her husband, Jim, at Delmar Christian Center in Delmar, where he is the pastor. She played keyboard, sang on the praise team, and was actively involved in the ladies group. She loved playing the piano, organ and keyboard. She directed choirs and school musicals. She and Jim enjoyed going out to dinner once a month, with through other couples called the “Dinner Club,” for many years. She also enjoyed reading. Charlotte’s greatest enjoyment was the company of her grandchildren.
Charlotte was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Brown, in 1979; and her father, Arthur Harris, in 2001.
Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Jim Brown; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Tanya Brown, of Laurel; two granddaughters, Michaela Lynn Brown and Abigail Joy Brown, both of Laurel; one grandson, Aaron Michael Brown, of Laurel; mother, Marie Harris, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; a brother, John Harris and his wife, Judy, of Okla.; sisters, Jean Winterstein, and her husband, Bill, of Sudlersville, Md., and Denise and her husband, Hebert, of LA; and a brother-in-law, Philip Brown, of Rehoboth Beach.
Services were held at the Epworth Christian School gymnasium, , Laurel, with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.

Alyssa Christine Youse

Alyssa Christine Youse, 15, of Millsboro, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford.
Miss Youse was a sophomore at Sussex Technical High School in Georgetown.
She was born Oct. 11, 1990 in Lewes.
She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro, where she was in the MYF. She earned a letter in varsity field hockey and played soccer. She was also on the school honor roll and a member of the All-County Band. She also played softball in the Millsboro Little League.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Cassie D. Long Youse, in 2000, and by her paternal grandfather, William Youse, in 1987.
She is survived by her father and stepmother, Christopher Sr. and Michele Youse; her maternal grandparents, Throt and Etta Long of Millsboro; her paternal grandparents, Bob and Lynn Williams of Millsboro; a sister, Stacey Youse of Millsboro; four brothers, Michael Dennis O’Neill Jr., Marcus O’Neill, Christopher Youse Jr. and Jacob Youse.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the Grace United Methodist Church, Church Street, Millsboro, with burial in Millsboro Cemetery.

Kathleen (Getty) Burke

Kathleen (Getty) Burke, 64, of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at her residence.
Mrs. Burke was born in Cumberland, Md., daughter of the late Francis and Vivian (Powers) Getty. She was a registered nurse and a member of the American Nurses Association, the Delaware State Nurses Association and the Nursing Honor Society. She had worked in the psychiatric divisions of hospitals in Virginia and Washington, D.C. She then worked at Delaware Technical & Community College, retiring in June 2001. Mrs. Burke was a member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, where she served as a eucharistic minister, was a member of the Salt and Light Ministries, and St. Edmonds Sodality.
She is survived by a son, Michael G. Burke, of Rehoboth Beach; an aunt, Ann Getty, of Florida; and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, Feb. 2, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, King Charles and Laurel streets, Rehoboth Beach, where visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Father James Downs will be officiating. Interment will be private in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.

Mildred (Layman) Minnick
retired leather worker
Mildred L. Minnick, 98, of New Castle and formerly of Lewes, passed away in Wilmington Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, after a long illness.
Mildred was born Oct. 16, 1907, in Frostburg, Md. She was employed by Amalgamated Leather Co. until her retirement in 1972. Previously, Mrs. Minnick was employed by Delaware Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Lewes for 18 years. In her earlier years, she attended Holloway Terrace Baptist Church in New Castle, where she taught Sunday School from 1950 to 1959.
Her beloved husband of 56 years Gilbert Minnick, passed away in 1983. She is survived by two sons, Paul Minnick of Elsmere and Ronald Minnick of Lewes.
Services were Friday, Feb. 3, at the Gebhart Funeral Home in New Castle. Burial was in Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle.

SFC Gerard P. “Jerry” Vavala

SFC Gerard P. “Jerry” Vavala, 48, died suddenly at home Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.
Sgt. First Class Gerard “Jerry” P. Vavala enlisted in the Delaware Army National Guard June 5, 1975. He had more than 31 years of decorated military service, with more than 26 of those years serving as an active guard soldier. Since 1992, he proudly served the soldiers of the 72nd Troop Command as an operations and training noncommissioned officer. SFC Vavala was the embodiment of the citizen soldier. His professionalism, expertise, dedication, team spirit, love of his soldiers and responsiveness to the needs of his country, state, organization and its members, has been the catalyst for many of the successes of the Delaware National Guard.
Jerry loved boating and spending time with his family on the water fishing and crabbing. He enjoyed remodeling and repairing. He liked golf and was a member of the Delaware Army National Guard Golf League. He also enjoyed wine making and cooking Italian meals. Jerry was a dedicated and loving father, husband and brother.
Jerry was the son of the late Frank and Nell Vavala of Elsmere. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Debby Vavala; his loving children, Dave A. Fell, of Newark, Michael A. Gonzales, of Newark, Justin G. Vavala, of Wilmington, and Kristin M. Vavala, of Wilmington; brother, Maj. Gen. Francis “Frank” D. Vavala, and his wife, Jane, of Wilmington; sister, Cissy E. Vavala-Gouert, and her husband, Terry, of Rehoboth Beach; his devoted nieces and nephews; and his beloved troop command family of the Delaware Army National Guard.
The Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, Feb. 2, at St. Anthony R.C. Church in Wilmington. Interment was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, with full military honors Friday, Feb. 3.

Thomas A. Pingitore
Korean War veteran
Thomas A. Pingitore, 73, of Lewes, died in Lewes Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, after battling a long illness.
Mr. Pingitore served in the armed services and was a veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Zeta A. (Barry) Pingitore; three sons; a daughter; and four grandchildren.

Mary Kathryn Showell
honorary church mother
Mary Kathryn Showell, 83, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, in the Genesis Eldercare Center in Seaford.
She was born Feb. 14, 1922, daughter of the late Gladys R. (Coverdale) and Howard Hood.
She attented Paul Lawrence Dunbar School in Laurel and Richard Allen School in Georgetown.
Mrs. Showell had been a member of United Church of First Born in Salisbury, Md., since the 1970s. She served faithfully until her health began to fail. She was an honorary mother of the church, and she also sang on the senior choir.
Mrs. Showell met James W. Showell in the 1940s and from this union was blessed to have three daughters.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James; one daughter, Joyce A. Showell; five sisters, Elsie Brittingham, Gladys S. Hood, Lillie M. Parker, Irene G. Whaley and Ruth O. Horsey; and four brothers, Howard E. Hood, Lloyd Hood, Samuel Hood and Leslie Hood.
She is survived by two daughters, Grace Mills of Bridgeville and Jean O. Showell of Seaford; one sister, Cora V. Miller of Rehoboth Beach; three brothers, Courtland M Hood and Thomas W. Hood of Slaughter Neck and George Arnold Hood of Seaford; one brother-in-law, Lonnie Horsey of Slaughter Neck; two sisters-in-law, Sheila Hood of Slaughter Neck and Edith Hood of Seaford; five grandchildren and their spouses, Sabrina and Michael Johnson of Salisbury, Rudolph Jr. and Verleen Mills of Laurenceville, Ga., Alesia and Duane Hopkins of Bridgeville, Terrence L. Showell and Shambre Showell, both of Seaford; eight great-grandchildren, Jevon Mills, Chaundell Mills, Rayshaun McCrea, Shameisha Horsey, Lamarcus Matthews, Shanice Durham, Duane Hopkins Jr., Davonte Mills; four great-great-grandchildren; a foster aunt, Marie Taylor; a special adopted granddaughter, Catherine Briddell, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services were Saturday, Feb. 4, in United Church First Born in Salisbury.
Burial will be in Green Acres Cemetery, West Road, Salisbury.

Lucille McIlvaine Tyrrell

Lucille McIlvaine Tyrrell, 92, lifelong resident of Lincoln, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, in her home.
Mrs. Tyrrell was born May 1, 1913, in Greenwood, daughter of the late Sewell Biggs and Annie Elizabeth Willey McIlvaine.
She was employed by the Milford Stitching Co. for many years and retired in 1965.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother that enjoyed her family. She was a very caring and hardworking lady. She always loved to help others and was very kind. She had a special ability to bring laughter and joy to others.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Calvin Clark Tyrrell, in 1980; a grandson, Ralph Rust Jr., in 1951; two sisters, Myrtle Brines McIlvaine Warrington and Viola McIlvaine; and four brothers, John Robert McIlvaine, Howard Joseph McIlvaine, Sewell McIlvaine and Alfred Cahall McIlvaine.
She is survived by three sons, Quentin Marvin Tyrrell Jr., of Delmar, Gene Sewell Tyrrell of Riverside, Calif., and Everett Lee Tyrrell Sr. of Lincoln; three daughters, Ruth Elizabeth Hurd of Lincoln, Marlene June “Tootsie” Bailey of Milton and Lyle Ann Merrick of Bridgeville; 17 grandchildren, Diana Golt, Dana Carlock, Bruce Tyrrell, Janice Moore, Donnie Dutton Sr., Cindy Bunting, Wanda Smith, Deborah Sharp, Debbie Hrusko, Lori Bailey, Kimberly Tyrrell, Melanie Yost, Kelly Tyrrell, Everett Lee “Bud” Tyrrell Jr., Jon Terry, Cris Terry and Robin Peterson; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie Pauline McIlvaine Kincaid of Wilmington.
Services were Thursday, Feb. 2, at Berry-Short Funeral Home in Milford. Burial was in St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood.


Ann M. Macintire Martin

Ann M. Macintire Martin, 66, of Lewes, passed away peacefully at her residence Monday, Feb. 6, 2006. 
Ann was born June 12, 1938 in Lewes, daughter of the late Howard Franklin and Fredonia White Macintire.
She was a lifelong resident of Lewes and took great delight in continuing lifelong friendships with those she grew up with in Lewes.  Ann was noted for her lifelong custom of sending anniversary, birthday and holiday greeting cards to her many friends. She also enjoyed socializing with her many friends at the Lewes Yacht Club, of which she was a member for 25 years.  Ann was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. 
Ann is survived by her devoted husband of 26 years, Richard Martin of Lewes; a son, Joseph Stevens Lyshon and his wife, Laura; and grandchildren, Megan and Steven Lyshon, all of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; a daughter, Elizabeth Ellen Dickson and her husband, Tom, and grandchildren Christann and Adam, all of Easton, Md.;  a stepson, Richard J. Martin and grandchildren, Christopher and Sarah, all of Dover;  a stepdaughter, Deborah J. Guelette and her husband, Richard, and grandchildren Jonathan and Taylor, all of Hartly; and two brothers, Robert G. Macintire and wife Bette, and James F. Macintire and wife Ruth, all  of Lewes.   Ann also leaves to be remembered her many lifelong friends that she cherished throughout her entire life.  Unfortunately, there are just too many to name
Funeral services will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Second Street, Lewes, Saturday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m.,  with Father Jeffrey A. Ross officiating. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.  Visitation hours will be held Friday, Feb. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes.
