Paul G. Carlson,
Delaware educator
Paul G. Carlson, 62 of Rehoboth Beach, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Nov. 30, 1941, and raised in McKeesport, Pa., Paul received his undergraduate degree in 1963 from Indiana Teachers’ College, now Indiana University of PA, where he was an active member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He received his master’s degree in Education from the University of Delaware in 1970.
Paul moved to Delaware in 1966 when he became a teacher at Leasure and Maclary elementary schools. In 1970, he was named principal of McVey Elementary School in Newark, and was subsequently appointed principal of Shortlidge, Mote, and Warner elementary schools in Wilmington, and Lewes Middle School in the Cape Henlopen School District. From 1993 until July 2004, Paul was executive director of the Delaware Association of School Administrators (DASA).
During his 40 years of service to public education and community organizations, Paul held numerous leadership positions, including being past president of the Diamond State Reading Association, the Delaware Chapter of the International Reading Association, the Delaware Association of School Administrators, and the Newark Chapter of Rotary International, where he received both the Service Above Self Award and was twice-named a Paul Harris Fellow. Among his numerous other awards and commendations were the Delaware State Superintendent of Education’s Merit Award and the Red Clay School District’s Outstanding Leader Award. He was also twice awarded the Delaware State Board of Education’s Order of Excellence.
In 1985 he was named the National Distinguished Principal from Delaware. During the past couple of years, Paul was a mentor to several first grade boys at the Morris Early Childhood Center in the Milford School District. In May 2004, he received the Kent County Leader Award from KidsCount Delaware, and on June 30, 2004, at the closing session of the 142nd General Assembly, HJR35 was unanimously approved by both the House and Senate and signed by the governor honoring Paul as “a true public education advocate and leader for excellence.”
Paul is survived by his wife of one year, Beth; his daughters, Kristin Carlson and Amy Carlson; their mother, Carolyn Carlson; and one granddaughter, Kelly Carlson. He is also survived by his parents, Paul A. and Jeanne Carlson of Milton; one brother, Charles Carlson, of Camden; and two sisters, Carole Sieber of Lewes, and Darlene Cordeaux of Ocean View; as well as two nieces and five nephews.
Relatives, friends, and colleagues are invited to attend a memorial service at Reformation Lutheran Church, 613 Lakeview Avenue, Milford, Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. Paul’s family will be at the church from 6 to 7 p.m. to greet guests prior to the service.

James D. Bennett Jr., 66, of Milton, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at home.
Mr. Bennett was the owner of Itzen and Robertson Construction Co. Inc. and Clear Water Pools of Wycoff, N.J. he retired in 1999 as custodian of grounds for the Wycoff Board of Education. He was a member of Grace Church, Milton, and a past member of the Wycoff Volunteer Fire Col.
He was preceded in death by a son, John M. Bennett.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Nielsen Bennett; two sons and daughters-in-law, James D. and Karen Bennett and Mark T. and Karen Bennett, all of West Milford, N.J.; a daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Mike McGinness of Goshen, N.Y.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gail and Reginald Trefethen of Clearwater, Fla. and Sandra and Richard Furfaro of Chula Vista, Calif.; and eight grandsons.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, at Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call at noon. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

John H. ‘Jack’ Martin,
retired truck driver
John H. “Jack” Martin, 67, of Milton, died Tuesday, Oct./ 26, 2004, at home.
Mr. Martin was born in Wilmington, the son of the late John and Marguerite Handlin Martin. He was a truck driver for over 20 years, retiring in 1996, having driven for Globe Union, Perdue, Holly Farms and Reed Trucking. He was a U.S. navy veteran of the Vietnam War and Cuban Missile Crisis, retiring as a petty officer after 21 years of service. He was a member and quartermaster of the Broadkiln VFW Post 6984 of Milton. He loved Volkswagens, especially his own 1966 Volkswagen that he enjoyed taking to car shows.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Kathleen Wilson Martin, in 1997.
He is survived by his wife of two years, Margaret Anna “Marty” Davis Martin; a daughter, Susan Martin of California; a niece whom he helped raise, Corinna Conway of Millsboro; two sisters, Marleen Phillips of Woodcrest and Patricia Winnington of Pocono, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Deborah Holloway of Russellville, Al. and Cynthia Carr of Newark; three stepsons, William McNeal of Milton, Michael J. McNeal of Florence, Al. and Patrick S. McNeal of Warwick, Md.; several stepgrandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 1, at Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton. Immediately following the service at the graveside a luncheon will be provided at the VFW Post home, Atlantic Avenue, Milton.

Richard W. Lemon Jr.,

Richard w. Lemon Jr., 35, of Clayton, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, in Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark.
Mr. Leon was born in Wilmington, the son of Richard w. Lemon Sr. of Wilmington and Mary Tipka Pack of Lewes. He had worked as a union bridge painter since age 18, and for Marinis Brothers Inc. in New Castle for the past eight years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorcycle riding, working with his hands. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and a special husband to his wife and papa to his children.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Lisa Yarnell Lemon; a son, Michael Haines; two daughters, Autumn Lemon and Meadow Lemon; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, George A. Jr. and Debbie Craig of Smyrna, Martin J. and Holly Lemon of Landenberg, Pa. and Joseph Lemon of Wilmington; his stepfather, James Pack of Lewes; his stepmother, Christine Lemon of Wilmington; his mother-in-law, Vera Lewis of Wilmington; and a sister-in-law, Suzy Yarnell of Smyrna.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29, in Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Townsend Cemetery.

Jeffrey Lynn Garnett,
NASCAR fan
Jeffrey Lynn Garnett, 62, of Millsboro, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
He was born in Salisbury, Md. and had served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He retired one year ago from Barr International. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved fishing.
Mr. Garnett is survived by his wife, Penny; three sons, Jeffrey Lee Garnett; Bryan Lynn Garnet and Larry McQuay; two daughters, -Teresa Mills and Tammy Horn; and was a loving PopPop to eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur “Jack” Garnett, and his mother, Margaret I. (Hitch) Garnett.
As requested by Mr. Garnett, services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes.
Stephen T. McGee,
American Legion member
Stephen T. McGee, 61, of Millsboro, passed away at his home Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2004, of cancer.
He was born in Wilmington to John J. and Catherine (Kitty) McGee. He was a 1961 graduate of Salesianum High School.
Steve was a multi craft senior maintenance technician at the DuPont Edge Moor Plant, retiring after 33 years as a maintenance planner. He also retired after 23 years with the Delaware National Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer 2. He was one of the seven-man Core Croup that formed the 249th Engineer Detachment which has served in the Caribbean, South America, Germany, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and throughout the United States. Steve was a member of the executive board of American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard/ Riverdale, American Veterans Post 2 of Long Neck, and a lifetime member of the Delaware National Guard Retired Officers Association.
He is survived by two brothers, John P. McGee of Bronx, N.Y., and Arthur J. McGee and his wife Theresa of Smyrna; two stepsisters, Marie Sosnowski and her husband, Edward (Butch), of Wilmington, and Nancy Baffone and her husband, Ben, of Newark.
Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, at 9 a.m. at the American Legion Post 28 on Route 24 in Oak Orchard, Millsboro, where friends may call after 8 a.m. Interment will be in the Cathedral Cemetery, Lancaster Avenue in Wilmington, Saturday, Oct. 30, at 11:30 a.m.

Ruth M. Tabor, 95, of Plano, Texas, died Sunday Oct. 24, 2004.
Mrs. Tabor was formerly from Rehoboth Beach. She was the beloved mother of Joan B. Weaver and mother-in-law of William M. Weaver; grandmother of W. Roy Weaver and Wendy C. Weaver; and great-grandmother of Kelley L. Weaver and Joseph R. Weaver.

Roy A. Berg Jr., 72, of Lewes, passed away at home Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, after a long illness with family members by his side.
Roy was born in New Bedford, Mass. Sept. 17, 1932, son of the late Cmdr. Roy and Dorothy Berg. He attended Norwich University, Vt., graduated from Wentworth University, Boston, in 1953, where he was awarded an honorary degree in May 2003. Roy was an Army veteran and a member of the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540.
He worked in various aircraft/helicopter positions including Boeing Company in Philadelphia, Pa., where he held the position of helicopter accident investigator.
Mr. Berg is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mary Louise (Armstrong) Berg; his children Kathleen Berg of Scarsdale, N.Y., Brenda Heon of Charlottesville, Va., and Christopher Berg of Winthrop, Mass. In addition, he leaves behind four grandchildren, Christopher and Connor Pascale, and Nichole and Kendall Heon; two sisters, Barbara McDonald of Falmouth, Mass. and Patricia Swanson of Louisville, Ky.

Barbara A. Buchar, 70, of Killington, Vt. and Lewes, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at her home in Killington.
Mrs. Buchar was born Oct. 12, 1934, in Yonkers, N.Y., the daughter of John and Betty Huber Haberle.
She graduated from Somers (N.Y.) High School in 1951, New York University in New Paltz in 1955, and received her master’s degree from C.W. Post College in Long Island, N.Y.
She was a teacher in Somers for 27 years. She was a member of St. Luke’s Church in Somers and of the Somers Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Buchar of Delaware; two sons, Stephen Fowler of Ellington, Conn., and Daniel Fowler of North Clarendon, Vt.; a daughter, Margaret Fowler of Bethel, Conn.; a brother, Albert Haberle of Westport, N.Y.; her companion, John Andrews of Lewes; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held at St. Luke’s Church, Somers.
Herschel B. Moore,

Herschel B. Moore, 62, of Milton, died after a courageous battle with cancer Sunday, Oct. 23, 2004, at home, surrounded by his loving family and devoted poodle, Bridgette.
Mr. Moore was born Jan. 5, 1942, in Milford, the son of “Lib” Moore Smith of Milford and the late Edwin “Cap” Moore.
He had previously worked for Draper Foods of Milford and was a self-employed truck driver and building contractor. For the past 27 years, he was a dedicated employee of Richard A. Johnson & Sons, where he held the position of foreman.
He had many hobbies, including trapshooting, stock car racing and hunting, but fishing and camping with family and friends were two of his favorites.
Mr. Moore was a lifetime member of the Broadkill Sportsman Club, a member of the Delaware Mobile Surfishing Club, the Harrington Moose Lodge, and the Milford Elks
Lodge. He was devoted to his family and friends and will always be remembered as a special person in the many lives he touched.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Ernestine “Ernie” Moore; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Herschel H. and Jacki Moore, and Kevin Moore, all of Milton; three grandsons, Chris, Derek and Evan; his mother; and a brother and sister-in-law, Charles E. and Donna Moore of Milton.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29, in Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal Street, Milton, with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

Raymond Abernathy Sr., 76, of Milton, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at home.
Mr. Abernathy was born March 6, 1928, in North Carolina.
He worked for many years as a poultry farmer. He also worked for Boise Cascade in Georgetown, and then for Millsboro Lumber until his retirement.
In his early years he was a member of Prospect AME Church in Georgetown.
He was preceded in death by his father, Garzen Abernathy; a sister, Cora Corfield,; his wife, Sally Abernathy; and a stepdaughter, Helen Pratt.
He is survived by his mother, Ann Bey of North Carolina; a brother, David Abernathy of North Carolina; two daughters and a son-in-law, Belinda and Donald Cicchini of Clayton and Sandra Felton of Lewes; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Raymond Abernathy, in Bahrain with Verizon, and Michael and Vanessa Abernathy of Lewes; four grandchildren, Natasha Spratting of South Carolina, Jeffrey Brummell of Maryland, Ratrina Johnson of Millsboro and Kermethia Abernathy of Virginia; six great-grandchildren; and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and other family members.
Services were held at Burton AME Church, Milton, with burial in First Congregational Church Cemetery, Milton.
Caroline B. Hostetter,

Caroline B. Hostetter, 69, of Wilmington, died of a heart attack at home, Friday, Oct. 22, 2004.
Born in Baltimore, Md., Carol lived in Pikesville and Glyndon, Md. and graduated from business college in Baltimore. She married Amos S. Hostetter Jr. in 1954. They moved to Lancaster, Pa. in 1960, where for 20 years she was office manager, bookkeeper and investment advisor at Sanitary Markets, a supermarket chain. She later was bookkeeper for Town and Country Casuals in Wilmington. Carol bred and exhibited prize-winning St. Bernard dogs and directed the renovation of their Civil War farmhouse with the help of her husband and children. She was a master of board and card games and a devoted and steadfast friend.
Carol is survived by her partner of 27 years, Mary Louise Ponsell of Wilmington; a son, Amos S. Hostetter III and wife Kim of Lewes; a daughter, Anna H. Donato and husband Michaelo of Lancaster, Pa.; five grandchildren, Laura B. Brian J. and Andrea Marie Donato. Rachel H. Martin and Aaron S. Hostetter; and four step grandchildren, Grant Keener and Haley L., Sarah H. and Brooke M.E. Dilliplaine. She was preceded in death by her husband; and her parents, Gorham Moale and Beatrice Likes Bowdre.

Cecilia “Sally” B. Collins of Lewes, formerly of New Castle, passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, after a long battle with cancer.
Sally retired from the DuPont Company in 1991. At DuPont she held numerous positions in the secretarial and clerical fields. She ended her career as a Customer Service Representative in Exports.
She made many friends while at DuPont and carried those friendships into her retirement years. Sally was widowed very young and made a good life for herself and her son , Kevin Paul Collins, who passed away last year. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund (Monk) Collins.
Sally is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Harry McLaughlin of Rehoboth Beach; sister-in-law, Rose Ann Collins of Wilmington; brother-in-law, Bill Collins of Wilmington and a host of devoted relatives, special friends and neighbors.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m., Wednesday,, Oct. 27, at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, Route 1 at Five Points, Lewes. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.

Julian M. Siomkajlo, 82, of Millsboro and formerly of Columbia, Md., died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at home.
Mr. Siomkajlo was a graduate of American University in Washington, D.C. and was a retired astrophysicist for NOAA in Washington, D.C. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of Mary, Mother of Peace Catholic Church and American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard/Riverdale.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa M. Siomkajlo; two daughters, Kristina Alinskas of New Castle and Lisa Remson of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and a grandson, Richard Remson III.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Mary, Mother of Peace Church, Oak Orchard. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, south of Millsboro.

Everett R. Schweda, 85, of Brookfield, Wisc., died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004.
Mr. Schweda is survived by his beloved wife, Marianna; his children, Lucille Domecki and her husband Bernard and Susan Puza and her husband Greg; grandchildren, Mary Ann and her husband Steve and Bernard Domecki and his wife Jill; Miss Molly; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Warren Dale Haney,

Warren Dale Haney, 77, of Chestertown, Md., died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, of natural causes in Chester River Manor, Chestertown.
Mr. Haney attended school in Pennsylvania, graduating in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation, and after returning from the service, earned a master’s degree in geology from Pennsylvania State University. He continued his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He worked for Exxon as a geologist in the southern part of the United States, and later went into business for himself.
He married Violet Fila on July 26, 1987. He enjoyed playing and teaching bridge at Heron Point and fishing.
He is survived by his wife. Violet Fila Haney; a son, Billy Haney of Denver; a daughter, Susie Beckley of Laurel; a stepson, Marshall Lucas of Stevensville; three grandchildren, Tiffany Beckley and Allison Beckley of Laurel and Maria Haney of Rehoboth Beach; two brothers, Glen of Boalsburg, Pa. and Merwynn of Venice, Fla.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown.

Sarah M. Wyss, 100, of Millsboro, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, in Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro.
Mrs. Wyss had worked with the foster grandparent program at the Stockley Center in Georgetown for 15 years.
She was a member of Long Neck United Methodist Church, Long Neck.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilmer Hudson Sr. in 1969; and her second husband, Ernest Wyss, in 1975.
She is survived by her son, Charles T. Hudson of Harrington; two daughters, Helen G. West and Audrey Cooper, both of Millsboro; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.
Edward A. Day,
retired from FAA
Edward A. Day, 84, of Gainesville, Va., and formerly of Rehoboth Beach, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at home.
Mr. Day served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, attaining the rank of major.
He was retired from the Federal Aviation Administration and also from the Air Force Reserve.
Among a lifetime of accomplishments, he was a past president of the Rehoboth Beach Lions Club, and past president of local chapters of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, AARP and Meals on Wheels, for which he had volunteered for more than 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Day; five children to whom he was devoted; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother.
Services and burial were private.
Edgar “Snookie” Smith,

Edgar Milton “Snookie” Smith, 76, of Lewes, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004.
Mr. Smith was born July 11, 1928 in Upper Marlboro, Md., the son of the late Milton and Gladys (Kerr) Smith.
He had been employed for 31 years as a Rights of Way Agent for the Department of Public Works & Transportation, in Prince Georges County, Md. Prior to that he had worked for the Washington D.C. Police Department and for the White House Police during the Eisenhower Administration. Mr. Smith was a life member of the Glenn Dale Fire Association in Glenn Dale, Md .

Hoyt Harrison Hitchens, 86, a lifelong resident of Georgetown, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at Bayhealth at Milford Memorial.
Mr. Hitchens was a supervisor for the Delaware Department of Transportation for many years, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed playing cards, selling used cars and visiting the sick. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Hitchens, in 1973; a live-in companion, Emma Stevenson; a brother; and two sisters.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Joan Hitchens and Bill and Shirley Hitchens; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Ronnie Mumford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Bernice Hitchens and Don and Sydney Hitchens. All of these relatives are from Georgetown. He is also survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marie and Robert Ellingsworth and Kathryn Meredith, all of Ellendale; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 24, at Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call at noon. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

Blanche M. Joseph, 92, of Millsboro, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Joseph was born in Millsboro and was a retired seamstress. She was employed by Evadnes Dress Shop in Lewes for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Moulten B. Joseph, in 1976.
She is survived by her son, Rufus Joseph; a daughter, Nancy Burbage; three grandsons, two step grandsons; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Raymond (John) MacCrory, 69, of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. MacCrory was born on Dec. 20, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pa. He resided in Glendora, N.J. , and graduated from Haddenfield High School. He spent three years of active duty in the U.S. Army. Most of his career was spent as a computer programmer/ analyst, contract specialist for the U.S. Department of Energy, retiring in 1990. He had also been part time owner of Prince George’s Engraving, retiring in 1999 when he moved to Rehoboth Beach. He worked for two summers with the Dewey Beach Police Department. He was an esteemed member of the Jaycees in New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland and was a member of the VA J.C.I Senate.
He is survived by his wife Jean MacCrory; three children, Dennis, Wayne and Karen; and two sisters, Margaret Maxson and Helene Burris.
Services were held at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior.

Robert S. Wright III, 79, of Palm Springs, Calif., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, in Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. He had been a Palm Springs resident for 40 years.
Mr. Wright was born in Chester, Pa., the son of the late Robert Spencer Wright Jr. and Roberta Rhodes Wright.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1943 to 1946. He was a district service manager for National Cash Register Corp. (NCR) for 43 years before his retirement. He was a charter member of the Desert Island Country Club in Palm Springs from 1972 until his death. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 0519 and Elks Lodge 1905 in Palm Springs.
He is survived by a son, Robert H. Wright, and his wife Carol of Lewes; a sister, Anne Wright Harrison, and her husband Jerry of West Chester, Pa.; a brother, Richard D. Wright and his wife, Jane of Wilmington; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester, Pa. Burial will be in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, Pa. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Elizabeth “Betty” Rhodes, 80, of Springfield, Pa., died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Springfield.
Mrs. Rhodes was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late George Leslie Gooden and Lucile Satterfield Gooden.
She played clarinet in the band and piano with the chorus at Dover High School, Dover, from which she graduated in 1941. In 1945, she graduated from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, where she was a music major.
After college, she returned home to Dover, where she taught piano and played the organ at People’s United Church of Christ. In 1947, she married the love of her life, Kenneth Rhodes, who was a native of England. They moved to Havertown, Pa., and raised three children and continued, successfully, to pursue their love of music. She played the organ in Church of the Covenant and Ebenezer, while Mr. Rhodes taught piano and accompanied various club bands. Sadly, Mr. Rhodes died peacefully while he and Mrs. Rhodes were visiting England in 1991.
Mrs. Rhodes was a lover of animals and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed the time she had with her children every summer vacation in New Hampshire. She was very lucky to have her oldest son, Douglas and his wife, Pat. They were always there to lend a hand.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Pat Rhodes of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Stewart and Susan Rhodes of Harrisburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Chuck Kessler of Kenosha, Wis.; five grandchildren, Griffin Rhodes and Alaina Rhodes, both of Harrisburg, and Eric Kessler, Joy Kessler and Julie Kessler, all of Kenosha; a sister, Sarah Hastings of Dover; two nephews, Jeff Hastings of Dover and David Hastings of Rehoboth Beach; and three nieces, Beth Hastings, Carol Hastings and Nancy Jaywork of Dover.
Services were held in Ebenezer Church, Havertown, with burial in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens.

Harry C. (Chriss) Schrader, 64, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004.
Chris was the son of Charles and Sara Jane and the loving husband of Irene.
He was born in Cannonsburg, Pa., and was a resident of Verona and Penn Hills, Pa. for over 40 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Iron Workers Union Local 3 in Pittsburgh. Since the mid-80’s, Chriss had resided in Ocean-Pines/Berlin, Md., Stroudsburg, Pa., and Millville/Dagsboro, De.
Chriss is survived by his wife, Irene; brothers, Charles and Gordon; sister, Barbara; sons, Ronald, Daniel and David; and grandchildren, Hayden and Paige.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Bethany Chapel of Melson Funeral Services on West Ave. in Ocean View. Interment will be in Mariner’s Bethel Cemetery in Ocean View.

Elaine K. Downey, 78, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Christiana Hospital.
She joined her husband, William F. Downey, Sr. and her eldest son, William F. Downey, Jr., who passed away on Mar. 5, 2004.
Downey was born in Cleveland, Oh., but spent over 50 years in De. She enjoyed anything with bright, warm sunlight, and golf, travel and spending time at the beach. Downey was an avid reader, but her passion was playing cards. She attained the Life Master Level of Contract Bridge, a distinction she shared with her husband. Downey was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy LaFashia and her daughter, Antoinette, of Wilmington; son, Brian Downey, Sr. and his wife, Joy, of Newark and their children, Brian and Jeff (twins), Deanna and Brad; daughter, Karen Stoppel of New Castle, with whom she lived, and her children, Melissa, Leigh and Matthew and Mark (twins); son, Blair Downey of Dover and his children, Blair Jr. and Christopher; daughter, Robin Satterly and her husband, Jeff, of Key West, Fl., and their children, Erik, Robin and Rachel (twins); son, Bobby Downey and his wife, Susan, of San Antonio, Tx. William E. Hudson, 74, of Selbyville, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Irma Williams Hudson, in 1991; his father and mother, Elisha and Gladys Hudson; and his sister, Lois H. Stevens.
Bill was a retired self-employed painter and also owned Hudson’s Sonoco on Route 50 for 20 years.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Doti Balenger of Selbyville; two daughters, ToRue Spicer of Dagsboro and Caryn Duncan of Selbyville; two grandsons, C.R. Smith and his wife, Amy, of Milton, Ricky Duncan of Selbyville; and a great-grandson, Jake Smith of Milton.

Walter J. Blaha,

Walter J. Blaha, 78, of Millsboro, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
Mr. Blaha was born in Elizabeth, NJ., the only child of the late John and Elizabeth Blaha. He was an Eagle Scout prior to his service as a World War II veteran and graduated in 1952 from the University of Maryland earning a bachelor’’s degree in the School of Engineering, starting his career in Baltimore.
Mr. Blaha had a rewarding career in the activated carbon industry, retiring from ATO Chemical in 1989.
He continued to serve the industry with his expert advice as a consultant after his retirement from ATO.
Mr. Blaha moved to Millsboro in 1991 and became very active in Mary, Mother of Peace Roman Catholic Church as an usher, member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society and as Past Faithful Navigator and Color Corp as a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
His many activities in the community included membership in the Lions Club, Oak Orchard-Riverdale Post 28 American Legion, Millsboro Art League, and as a volunteer in the Meals on Wheels program.
He was also active in the Hunter’s Point Homeowners Association as secretary for several terms. The outpouring of sympathy and good will from his church and community speaks as a tribute of his many contributions to the community and lives he touched.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Constance V. Blaha, who remains in ICU at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes; two children, Cynthia Lamb and John Blaha and wife Eileen; two grandchildren, Carolyn Lamb and James Lamb; and two grand dogs, Mac and Corky.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Melson Funeral Services of Long Neck and announced at a later date. Interment will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South in Millsboro.

Mildred Bevis Hughes, 87, of Rehoboth Beach, and formerly of Wilmington, died on Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at her residence.
She was born on January 27, 1917, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Paul D. Bevis and Anna Rodman Bevis.
Mrs. Hughes was a 1935 graduate of Wilmington High School, and had worked at Continental Insurance, for the Delaware General Assembly, and for New Castle County Government in the offices of Prothonotary’s, County Engineers’ and the Recorder of Deeds, retiring in 1970.
She had also helped her husband build the Hughes Security Service.
She had been involved with many organizations over the years including Rebeccas, Republican Party in New Castle County, Rehoboth Village Improvement Association, Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth Beach Country Club as well as several local bridge groups.
She was preceded in death by her husband, former state senator Charles “Pete” Hughes, in March of 2004.
She is survived by her daughters, Doris Latta of Greenville, S.C., and Judith Bryan of Rehoboth Beach; three grandchildren, Steven Latta, Janis Lopez, and Karen Pickard; and one great grandson, Ryan Thomas Pickard.
Memorial services will be held at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Epworth U.M. Church in Rehoboth Beach, with the Rev. Jack Abel officiating.
Private burial will be at All Saints Cemetery, Angola.

Marie Kealy of Chapel Green, Lewes, and formerly of Hazleton, Pa., died Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late James and Margaret Piccarisi. She moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she worked as a secretary for the federal government and relocated to Lewes. Preceding her in death were her husband, William Kealy, and brother-in-law, Edward Snyder.
She is survived by a son, Bill, and his wife Denise, of Patchogue, N.Y.; grandsons Keith and Brian; a sister, Elvira Snyder of Lewes, with whom she resided; and a nephew, James Snyder.

Mrs. Richter was born in Wilmington to the late John W. and Lillie D. Procter Sandtrum. She was married for 56 years to the late John Richter. She was an artist and accomplished in all mediums.
She was preceded in death by a grandson.

He was a member of Cypress Lake Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers.

Reed of Milford; a daughter and son-in-law, Carrie L. and Ronald Sigmon of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Christopher Sigmon, Nicholas Sigmon, Victoria Sigmon and Dalton Sigmon, all of Roanoke; his father, Frank L. She was a seamstress for several area sewing factories before her retirement due to disability.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Brittingham, in 1999.
She is survived by five brothers, Bruce Revel and Jeffrey Revel, both of Millsboro, Donald Wells of Milford, David Revel of Dagsboro and Clayton Revel Jr. of Seaford; three sisters, Carolyn Werner and Susan Mayer, both of Millsboro and Deborah Boyneuyri of Dagsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Rachel was born Jan. 29, 1998, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., the daughter of Steven M. and Jeanne M. Vance Crowers.
She was a first grade student at Candlebrook Elementary School in King of Prussia.
She is survived by her loving parents, Steven M. and Jeanne M. Crowers; her sister, Danielle J. Crowers, at home; her paternal grandmother, Beverly M. (Osterley) Crowers of Sharon Hill, Pa.; her maternal grandparents, Joseph W. and Joan M. John L. “Jack” Turner,

John L. “Jack” Turner, 80, of Wildwood, N.J., and formerly of Delaware, died suddenly Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at home.
Born in Worcester, Mass., he had been a Wildwood resident for the past 15 years. Mr. Turner was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force as gunnery sergeant with the B26 Marauder Division. He flew numerous dangerous missions in Europe, including D-Day.
Mr. Turner was a member of the VFW in Newark before moving to New Jersey. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Wildwood Country Club until ailing health prevented his ability to play. He was also a member of the Wildwood Lions Club. He was a very outgoing man and loved going to University of Delaware games with his many friends He also loved watching the Phillies over many seasons. As his health became increasingly difficult, he became a frequent visitor to the Cape May County Zoo and loved to spend the day walking and enjoying wildlife. He will be remembered by his children for his passion, determination and never ending desire to see his children succeed.
He is survived by four children, Michael of Hilton Head, N.C., John of Landenberg, Pa., Joan Williamson of Lewes and Toni Ann Lindsay of Newark; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held in Cape May County Veterans’ Cemetery, Cape May Court House, N.J.

Clarence David Webb, 57, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004.
He was born July 22, 1947, son of the late Margarette A. and Richard M. Webb.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years of active duty and returned home to Sussex County. At the time of his death, he was employed by Vic’s A-1 Towing in Georgetown.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Randall Lee.
He is survived by a sister, Judy, and her husband, Bill Lawson of Georgetown; a brother, Richard, and his wife Connie of Dagsboro; a daughter, Tina; and four nieces, Robin Esham, Amber Welch, Karen Carey and Tara Quillen. He will also be greatly missed by K.C. and by several aunts, uncles and friends.
The burial will be private at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Stockley. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Dave’s memory to the Home of the Brave Foundation Inc. at 5532 Sharp’s Road, Milford DE 19963 would be appreciated.

Patricia Ann Smith, 55, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at her home near Georgetown.
She was born Nov. 22, 1948, in Milford, the daughter of the late Carlton E. and Elizabeth Carpenter Mitchell.
Mrs. Smith was a registered nurse working for Beebe Medical Center in Lewes for the past 34 years. She started as a staff nurse and worked her way up to the position of patient care coordinator.
She previously attended the Milton Wesleyan Church in Milton. She was an alumnae of the Beebe Nursing School, member of the Orthopedic Nurses Association, faithful contributor to the Beebe Medical Center’s Vision 2005 campaign, past member of the Georgetown Little League, and present member of the Millsboro Little League where she served as a volunteer.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Robert N. Smith; three children, Robert N. Smith II and his wife Sandi of Rehoboth Beach, Lori S. Bishop and her husband Rick of Greensboro, Md., and Christopher E. Joyce Arden Moore, 79, a lifelong resident of Rehoboth Beach, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at home after a courageous three year battle with cancer.
Joyce was the youngest of five children born to Ralph and Myrtle Wingate. Ralph was elected mayor of Rehoboth Beach in 1927 and again in 1929. She devoted her life to her family, raising two children, serving as primary caretaker to her mother in later years and providing assistance to other family members during times of need. She received her strength from her family and was happiest when she could be helpful to others.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Loren; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Marion Moore of Lewes; a son, Shawn Moore and his companion, Ruth, of Rehoboth Beach; a grandson, Shawn; a brother, Jay Wingate of Rehoboth Beach; a sister, Shirley Lipp of Gaithersburg, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Epworth Cemetery in Rehoboth Beach. The family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 600 N. DuPont Hwy., Suite 107, Georgetown DE 19947, who provided her with such loving care.

Helen Downs Morris, 79, of rural Lewes passed away Wednesday, Oct, 13, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Lewes, March 15, 1925, to the late Sidney L. and Mary McGee Downs, native Sussex Countians.
Helen graduated from Lewes High School, Class of 1943. She was employed as a civilian with Post Engineers, Fort Miles.
Helen married John W. “Jack” Morris in 1950. They owned and operated Jack’s Trailer Park on the site of Rehoboth Mall from mid-1950s until the mid 1980s. Helen was baptized in Groome United Methodist Church as an infant and she remained faithful in attendance and service to the church until her recent illness. She taught Sunday school for many years and was the communion steward for 30 years.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her daughter, April Beauchamp; and her brother Sidney L. Downs, Jr.
In addition to her husband, Jack, she is survived by her daughter Patricia Morris; and her sister Hazel D. Brittingham, all of Lewes. She also leaves behind two grandchildren Shelly Beauchamp of Brigantine, N.J., and John Beauchamp of Lewes; her former son-in-law Gary Price of Lewes; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes, in the company of her parents and paternal grandparents and great-grandparents, the latter being the first Sidney L. Downs born in 1839.

Helen Morehead Ball McWhorter, 100, of Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004 in Lewes Convalescent Center.
She was born on May 17, 1904 in Wilmington, the daughter of the late James and Ada Cornelia Elliott Ball. Her father was a 47-year veteran conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad; her mother was a dress maker and milliner.
Mrs. McWhorter was a graduate of Wilmington High School. She was employed by Wilmington Trust Company in Wilmington prior to her marriage to Harold Meeds McWhorter in 1934. During her middle years, she returned to work for the National Association of Infantile Paralysis and in her later years, she worked for the Division of Aging and enjoyed part-time work with Strawbridge and Clothier. In her late seventies, she became an artist. Her lighthouses were notable.
She is survived by her daughter, Pastor Maxine McWhorter Ungerbuehler and her husband Charles M. Ungerbuehler; two granddaughters, Bette Brice Brasure and her husband Darrell, and Cheryl Brice Moore and her husband Bruce Holland; and a grandson, Shane Meeds Brice and his wife Saliecha; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gordon Roy Davis, 55, of Lewes, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at his residence.
Mr. Davis was born in Keene, N.H., the son of Leonard Davis and Velma “LaBelle” Davis of Richmond, NH.
Gordon was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Seaford. He was also a member of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company since retiring to Delaware in 2000. Prior to that, he served as a member of the District of Columbia Fire Department for almost 15 years, and with the Myrtle Beach Fire & Rescue Squad from 1980 to 1985.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis is survived by his wife Kathleen Eva “Clark” Davis; five daughters, Tracey Davis, Tammy Kelley, Deanna Bryson, Kathryn Wharton, and Sherry Davis; three sons, Matthew Davis, Brandon Davis, and William Clark; two sisters, Wendy Payne and Lynn Adams; two brothers, Gary Davis, and Joseph Davis; and 25 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Davis, and his son, Michael Davis.

Donald Calder McKaskill, 72, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Beebe Medical Center.
Don McKaskill was a loving husband, adored father and cherished grandfather known as Pappy. He served his country in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Bechtel Corporation as a piping superintendent.
Don is survived by his wife of 42 years, Suzanne; three daughters, Suzy, Mia and Jaime McKaskill; three grandchildren, Marisa, Zane and Matthew; a sister, Calder Degner and her husband Gerald of Fallon, N.V.; brothers-in-law, Donnie Nolan of Phoenix, Az., Jimmy Nolan of Ravena, N.Y. and their families; sisters-in-law, Michele Westfield and Nanette Bomba and their families of Pennsville, N.J. and their families; son-in-law, Stevan Sheek; and adopted daughter Lisa Yamakawa.

Donald L. Richter, 83, of Millsboro, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at home surrounded by his family.
He was a graduate of Iowa State University and a member of the Alpha Theta Omega fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a U.S. Army captain in the signal corps. He worked as a record manager for RCA Victor. He was an avid wood carver and his favorite subject was the American eagle. In his retirement, he enjoyed boating and playing golf and was a past commodore of the Indian River Yacht Club. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach, AARP, the Rehoboth Art League and the Audio Engineering Society.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Caroline Richter; two children, Gretchen Pippin and her husband Chris of Millsboro, and Kyle Richter of Ellicott City, Md.; two brothers, Roger Richter of Laguna Woods, Calif.; and Howard Richter of Murrieta, Calif.; and a grandson, Nicholas Pippin of Millsboro.

Sarah Ann Turpin, 98, of Denton, Md., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, in Ruxton Nursing Center, Denton.
Mrs. Turpin grew up and spent her entire life in Denton, as well as spending many summers in Rehoboth Beach. She treasured the many friends she made in Delaware over the years. She was a homemaker and a housekeeper for the Lynam and Anna M. Lynch families. She was a member of Bells Chapel AME Church, where she was in the missionary society and was a stewardess emeritus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Howard Turpin, in 1955, and a son-in-law, Clarence B. Steward, on Aug. 7, 2004.
She is survived by two daughters, Hilda Wilson of Denton and Pauline T. Stewart of Lewes; a sister, Martha Coursey of Denton; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services were held in Bells Chapel AME Church, Denton, with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, Denton.

Pauline Reed Thompson, 83, of Lewes, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004.
Mrs. Thompson was born Aug. 9, 1921 in Elk Mills, Md., the daughter of the late Howard and Hilda Kay Reed. She was raised in Newark and graduated from Newark High School.
Mrs. Thompson was a graduate of Memorial School of Nursing in Wilmington, where she graduated with honors. She worked in the emergency room, in pediatrics and as head operating room nurse. She was also a private duty nurse for the du Pont families and Frank W. Diver and his family. She nursed soldiers who came home from war and was referred to by them as their “angel of mercy.”
She raised her children in Wilmington and retired in 1975 to Lewes. She was an active member of Baldwin United Methodist Church, Elk Mills, Md., Cedar Crest United Methodist in Wilmington and the United Methodist Church, Ocean City, Md., where she spent summers at her beach house on First and Philadelphia streets.
She was preceded in death by her firstborn son, William Howard Thompson; a granddaughter, Ginger L. Bliler; and William O. Thompson Sr.
She is survived by her children, Kay M. Thompson of Clayton; William O. Thompson Jr. of Wilmington; Anne P. Kabino of Middletown; Lynn Ellen Bliler of Dover; Hope Thompson Mitchell of Lewes; and Thomas Nelson Thompson of Rehoboth Beach; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Richard Everhart, 90, of Gettysburg, Pa., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at The Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Village.
Mr. Everhart was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg where he sang in the church choir for many years. A veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific, Mr. Everhart later worked as an artist with the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., from 1946 until his retirement in 1973. Mr. Everhart is survived by his second wife, Susan Wentz Everhart; his first wife, the late Jean Spangler Everhart, died in 1989. He is also survived by a sister, Rachel E. Wolff of Gettysburg; a brother, Bill C. Everhart of Reston, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Philip R. Everhart.

Shirley Jean Manning Heishman, 70, of Milford went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in her home with her family present.
Mrs. Heishman was born Aug. 18, 1934, in Harrisonburg, Va., daughter of James Paul Manning of Harrisonburg and the late Frances Elaine Whitesell Manning.
She was a homemaker most of her life, but also owned Heishman Inc., an embroidery business in Milford, which she opened in 1981 and operated until she retired in 1994.
Besides her dedication to her family, she enjoyed the challenge of crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid bowler.
Mrs. Heishman was a member of the First Baptist Church of Frederica and of the Lower Delaware Bowling Association and the Women's International Bowling Congress.
In addition to her mother, two brothers, Rodney Eugene Manning, and James W. Manning preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Harold W. Heishman; two sons, Scot Heishman of Lincoln and Eric Heishman of Rehoboth Beach; her father, James Paul Manning of Harrisonburg; a brother, John Robert "Bob" Manning, of Harrisonburg; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She worked as a manager at H&E Smith in St. George's. Earlier, she was employed by Archie Brown.

Fred C. Schmidt Jr., 88, of Rehoboth Beach, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford,
Fred was born and raised in Newark, N.J., the son of the late Frederick C. Sr. and Margaret Ihling Schmidt.
He spent most of his life in Newark. In 1997, he moved to Delaware to be with his daughter in Rehoboth Beach and had resided at the Country Rest Home in Greenwood since March.
He was valedictorian of his high school class and graduated on full scholarship in 1938 from Rutgers University with a double degree in chemistry and biology.
Col. Schmidt retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1968 after 30 years of distinguished service. He was awarded the Legion of Merit medal, the highest medal awarded during peacetime. His most recent work prior to retirement was with the Pentagon. During his military career, he worked in research and development during WWII and the Korean War. Col. Schmidt headed a group of engineers in the Air Force who developed the AWAC technology and Atlas Missile. During the Korean War he worked as a chemist at Calco Co. and developed sodium sulfmilimide, a sulfur compound that stopped excess wound bleeding of soldiers. He retired from the military with qualifications as a chemist, aeronautical engineer and chemical engineer.
After retirement he was employed as a chemist with General Dynamics in Rochester, N.Y. He went on to become a professor at Northern Virginia Community College where he taught hotel and restaurant management. After moving to Delaware, he helped manage Air Traffic, a kite company, with his daughter.
He was an active member of the Lions Club in Fairfax, Va. and Rehoboth Beach. He was a loving father and grandfather who doted on his grandson, and he enjoyed reading and watching football.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Flanagan Schmidt; two sons, Michael F. and Ronald B. Schmidt; and a sister, Edna VanHorn.
He is survived by a daughter, Pam Hertel of Rehoboth Beach; a grandson, Brett Hertel, a freshman at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Chartier of Bristow, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Cahall was born in Millsboro and was a retired elementary school teacher who taught in the Millsboro, Gumboro and Frankford schools during her career. She was a member of Grace United Church in Millsboro.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford “Gus” Cahall, in 1990; a son, M. George Cahall in 1992; and a brother, Aldon Adkins in 1938.
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Seidel of Salisbury, Md.; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.

Grace (Jump) Knotts, 95, of Seaford, died Monday, Oct. 4, at Methodist Manor House in Seaford.
Mrs. Knotts was born on Wednesday, March 10, 1909, in Cheswold, to the late Josiah Temple Jump and Ethel “Emerson” Jump.
Mrs. Knotts started teaching in 1928 in a one-room schoolhouse in Petersburg; she retired from the Cape Henlopen School District in 1974 after a 46-year career as a teacher. She was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Seaford and was an avid champion bridge player. While living at the Methodist Manor House in Seaford, Mrs. Knotts participated in many of the varied organizations offered there. Likewise, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution - Col. David Hall chapter; a former member of All Saints Episcopal Church; past member of Sussex Gardeners; and a past member of VIA, Rehoboth Beach.
Mrs. Knotts was preceded in death by her husband, James Temple Knotts Jr.; her sister Beatrice Townsend; and her brother Josiah Temple Jump Jr.
She is survived by two sons, James T. Knotts III and his wife Christine of Rehoboth Beach, and Richard H. Knotts and his wife Melody of Troutman, N.C.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as two sisters, Virginia J. Metz of Seaford, and Ruth J. Walker of Woodside.
Funeral services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, with burial in All Saints Cemetery, Lewes.

David “Pop” Bull, 82, of Smyrna, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, in the Delaware Home and Hospital for the Chronically Ill.
He worked for many years at Townsend’s Inc. and Parker’s in Millsboro and at Wyoming Concrete in Wyoming.
Mr. Bull was a member of Crossroad Christian Church, Dover. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Savage Bull.
He is survived by six sons, Barry Bull of Milton, David Bull and Crosby Bull, both of Dover, Charles Nock and Sammy Sample, both of Millsboro, and Walter Shepard of Baltimore; four daughters, Linda Bordley of Dover, Stephanie Nelson of Boston, Monica Brown of Smyrna and Sharon Van of Salisbury, Md.; a brother, Charles Bull of Craddockville, Va.; a sister, Alice Reid of Painter, Va.; 44 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Anthony F. Uniatowski, 71, of Newport Heights, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004.
Tony had worked on the assembly line for GM for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He had been a member of UAW Local 435, the West End Rod & Gun Club and the Loyal Order of the Moose, New Castle.
He is survived by his wife, Violet; a daughter, Mary Ellen Bryner of Lake Worth, Fla.; a brother,Joseph Uniatowski and his wife Catherine of Lewes; and sisters Irene Shestock and her husband George of Chesapeake City, Md., Dorothy Perna and her husband Joe of New Castle,Agnes Uniatowski of Newport, JosephineUniatowski of Wilmington, Mary Ann Moody and her husband Gaylord of Chesapeake City, Md. He is also survived by his grandson, Pasqualo Anthony Addessi and his wife, Rebecca, of Levant, Me.; granddaughter, Sydney Addessi; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude, in 1976; hhis brother, Theodore; and sister, Florence Barbato.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m., Friday, oct. 8, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Cedar & S.Clayton sts., Wilmingtion, with burial in the Crypt of St. Francis in Cathedral Cemetery.

Suzonne C. Kohler Arena, 72, of Lewes, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Christiana Medical Center in Christiana.
She was born September 28, 1932, in Rochester, N.Y. to the late Clarence J. Kohler and Frances “Houck” Kohler.
Mrs. Arena was an elementary school teacher for many years in Honeoye Falls, N.Y. She was an active member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Lewes serving as a lector, eucharistic minister, and also on the Salt & Light Welcoming Committee and the Bereavement Group.
She is survived by her husband, Philip F. Arena of Lewes; one daughter, Amy S. Arena of Schenectady, N.Y.; three sons, David A. and his companion Greg of Coatesville, Pa.; Paul A. of Lewes; Christopher P. of North Conway, N.H.; one granddaughter, Reilly Arena; one brother, David Kohler and his wife Barbara of Kenosha, Wi.; and nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m., at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church on Route 1 at Five Points. Interment will be private.

John Hoffich, 87, of Lewes and formerly of Bethlehem, Pa. and Manahawkin, N.J., died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at home.
He was a machinist at the Bethlehem Steel Company, retiring in 1979.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margery; a niece, Irene Prestosh of Bethlehem; and grand nieces and nephews.

Charles M. “Chuck” Porter, 65, of Lewes and formerly of Boothwyn, Pa., died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
Mr. Porter was born and raised in Lewes. He had lived in Boothwyn for 23 years prior to relocating to Lewes, where he had resided the past two years.
He graduated from Neumann High School in Philadelphia. He had been employed as a sheet metal worker for Local 19 for 27 years until his retirement in 1996. He was an Army veteran during peace time. His memberships included the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 19 for 35 years and St. Gabriel’s bowling league in Philadelphia. He was an avid gardener and a computer buff and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kathleen M. Clark Porter; four children, Thomas Porter of Woodbridge, Va., Dawn Tierney of Boothwyn, Pa., Keith Porter of West Chester, Pa. and Alex Porter of Lewes; a brother, James Porter of Warminster, Pa.; his best friend, Harry “Skip” Clark of South Philadelphia, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5, at St. John Fisher Catholic Church, 4225 Chichester Ave., Boothwyn, Pa., where a viewing will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Interment will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, Pa.

Warren S. Schneller, 78, of Lewes, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born in Allentown, Pa. and was a graduate of Muhlenburg College in Allentown and the Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Mr. Schneller was a teacher for 37 years with the Lewes School District, where he taught physics, chemistry and biology and coached basketball and football. Before retiring, he was assistant principal at Cape Henlopen High School.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John J. Schneller. He is survived by his wife, Katherine; a son, John of Columbia, Mo.; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Schneller of Lewes; and a granddaughter, Katherine Schneller.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5,k at Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Episcopal Cemetery, Pilottown Rd., Lewes.

Richrd A. Stetyick, 22, of Millsboro, died at home Friday, Oct. 1, 2004.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Linda and Frank Stetyick. He was a member of the National Guard Signal Corps.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Michael; three sisters, Deane Holland, Kimberly O’Connell and Karen Stetyick.

Richard F. Gott,
retired civilian engineer
Richard Frommeyer Gott, 82, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at home.
He was born in Gettysburg, Pa., June 24, 1922, the son of the late Estelle Frommeyer Gott and Richard Gott. He was the oldest of five children.
Mr. Gott grew up in Forest Glen, Silver Spring, Md. He attended Gonzaga High School and won a scholarship to Catholic University, which he attended for two years until he became a sergeant with the U.S. Army Engineers during World War II. He served as a surveyor during the occupation of Germany. When he came home, he finished his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. It was at the university that he met his beloved wife of 56 years, Jane Wright.
After graduation, Mr. Gott worked for the U.S. Navy as a civilian engineer until his retirement in 1978 after 32 years of service. Early in his career there, he invented a special locking system with a quick release safety device for naval weapons systems. For many years prior to his retirement, he was the Chief Systems Engineer for the Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident missile systems in the Strategic Systems Project Office. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Lewes, where they ran the Antique Corner for 26 years.
He served on the Lewes City Council for eight years and was instrumental in keeping the town’s Delaware Bay shoreline undeveloped. During his tenure there, he also helped fund and build the new Lewes Public Library building.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary G. Gastelle and Betty Scherschel, as well as his brother, John “Jack” Gott.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind six children, Madelle G. Tolbert, and her husband, Dan of Frederick, Md.; Mary G. Saltarelli, and her husband, Joseph of Granbury, Texas; Therese Gott Banz; Jane Bakke, and her husband, Troy; Richard J. Gott; and Elizabeth D. Gott, all of Lewes. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Rebecca Melson Klein; Jacob Melson; Jeb Bakke; Maddy, Elise, and Amy Tolbert; and Christopher M. Banz; and one great grandson, David Klein. In addition, he also leaves behind his sister Ann L. Craig of Tioga, La.; and his sister-in-law Marjorie Gott of Garrett Park, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Catholic Mass will be celebrated for Mr. Gott at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Route 1 at Five Points, Lewes, Saturday, Oct. 2, at 11 a.m. Burial services will immediately follow at St. Peter’s Church Cemetery on Pilottown Road, Lewes.

Patricia a. Bauer, 73, of Teal Point, Milton, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at home after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Bauer was born in Pottstown, Pa., the daughter of the late Earl R. and Esther B. Bender Ziegler. She moved to Delaware with her husband in 1998 from Pottstown after retiring as a switchboard operator with Keystone Steel in Spring City, Pa. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Pottstown and enjoyed bowling and her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Harold C. Bauer of Milton; two sons, Bruce Bauer and his wife Cindy, and Jay H.C. Bauer and his wife Janice, all of Pottstown; five grandchildren, Jason, Michael, Bryon, Brent and Evan; a brother, George W. Ziegler of Pottstown; a sister, Jean Houck of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and her loving and faithful dog, Maggie.

John M. Bennett, 40, of Milton, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, while in New York.
Mr. Bennett was born in Ridgewood, N.J., the son of Jim and Arlene Nielsen Bennett of Milton. Mr. Bennett was a truck driver for Covenant Trucking Co. based in Tennessee. He was a Civil War historian and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Uriah John Bennett of Oxford, N.Y.; two brothers, James D. Bennett and his wife Karen, and Mark T. Bennett and his wife Karen, all of West Milford, N.J.; a sister, Tracy McGuinness and husband Mike of Goshen, N..Y.; and seven nephews.

Marti D. Coco, 48, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004.
Mrs. Coco owned CoCo’s Restaurant in Arlington, Va. from 1980-1999. She also owned CoCo’s Diner, Casa Di Napoli and the Italian Café in Rehoboth.
Mrs. Coco is survived by her loving husband, Gregg Coco; and her four children, Brooke, Jennifer, Garrett and Alex; her sisters, Jody White and Robin Gronlund; and her brother, Robert Mason.

C. Richard Creasy, 60, of Lewes, passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2004.
Mr. Creasy was born in Scranton, Pa. and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of American Legion Post 17 and was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed sports and fishing.

William Henry Rutherford, 62, of Dewey Beach, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at home.
He was born on November 8, 1941, in Baltimore, Md., the son of the late William H. Rutherford and Dorthea Quick Rutherford.
Mr. Rutherford was Dewey Beach town manager from 1988 to 2003. Prior to that he had worked for many years as an accountant for British Petroleum. He loved golfing and fishing and was an amateur radio hobbyist.
He was a member of Sussex Pines Golf and Country Club, associate member of the American Legion Post 5, Rehoboth Beach, and the Dewey Beach Lions Club.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 1, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 1449 Kings Hwy., Lewes, with Father Max Wolf officiating. Burial will be private in All Saints’ Cemetery, Angola.

Wendy Marie Willey, 16, of Georgetown, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Christiana Medical Center, Wilmington.
Wendy was born in Seaford Nov. 5, 1987 and was an 11th grade student at Sussex Central High School in Georgetown. She was baptized and attended Our lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Seaford. A typical teenager, she enjoyed shopping, tanning and eating at Harvest Diner. She enjoyed music and especially liked Tim McGraw. Her sisters recall how she loved watching Dawsons Creek and going on long walks with them to talk about all kids of things,. She also enjoyed writing poems. She was involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
She is survived by her father and mother, Randy and Christy Willey and sisters Paige Willey and Brittany Willey, with whom she lived in Georgetown; her mother Lynda Young and siblings Sherrie Young, Richard Truitt, Cierra Truitt and Brandon Truitt, all of Seaford; paternal grandmother Annie Willey of Bridgeville; paternal grandfather Alfred R. Willey of Seaford; maternal grandmother Linda Young of Bridgeville; maternal grandfather Donald Young of New Castle; maternal grandmother Joyce Dickerson of Georgetown; maternal grandfather William Dickerson of Salisbury, Md.; boyfriend Chad Wilson of Georgetown; godmothers, Dora Elizabeth Drubner of Boston, Mass and Patricia VanGelder of Bridgeville; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
