Lois Gay Pauley,
former missionary
Lois Gay Pauley, 61, of Long Neck, was called home to be with the Lord Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004.
Born in Ayer, Mass., the daughter of the late Lionel and Lillian Shaw, she was a missionary for 28 years with Christar in Hong Kong, Bejing, China and Brooklyn, N.Y. Currently she was a member of the New Life Bible Fellowship Church of Delmarva in Long Neck.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Wayne Alan Pauley; two sons, Wayne A. Pauley Jr. of New Hampshire and Mark B. Pauley of Redding, Ca.; a brother, Richard Shaw of Vermont; a sister, Leslie Slocomb of Shirley, Mass.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 21, in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road. Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery.

Jonathan F. Witcoski,
Smyrna high graduate
Jonathan Francis Witcoski, 20, of Clayton died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born Jan. 16, 1984, in Clayton, son of Francis and Deborah Zirbes Witcoski of Clayton.
He was a 2002 graduate of Smyrna High School, where he was on his high school wrestling and football teams.
He was a junior at Delaware Technical & Community College in Dover, after transferring from West Virginia University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
He had been a captain for the Smyrna-Clayton Pop Warner Football team and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing poker, and being there for his family and friends.
He is survived by his parents, Francis and Deborah Zirbes Witcoski of Clayton; a brother, Anthony J. Witcoski of Newark; his maternal grandparents, Al and Florence Zirbes of Minneapolis; his paternal grandmother, Antoinette Witcoski of Rehoboth Beach; six uncles and six aunts, Peter and Mary Naudi of Pittsburg, Pa., Jimmy and Cindi Ewen of Newark, Carl and Kathy Anderson of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., and Bruce and Michelle Zirbes, Ron and Hanh Zirbes, and Mark and Betsy Zirbes, all of Minneapolis; and eight cousins, Sarah, Hannah, Zach, Andrew, Kim, Karen, Cameron and Maggie.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, in Faries Funeral chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Smyrna-Clayton Pop Warner League, 1953 Van Dyke Greenspring Road Smyrna, DE 19977.



The Rev. Ivan Downing,
retired minister
The Rev. Ivan P. Downing, 88, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004.
The Rev. Downing was a retired minister with the Peninsula General Conference of the United Methodist Church, serving many churches on the Eastern Shore, including those at Reliance, Laurel, Ellendale, Clarksville, Roxana, Millville, Ocean View and Newark.
He graduated from Delhi College, a technical and agricultural college, and later Wesley Theological Seminary, completing advanced studies at Duke University. Before entering the ministry, he was an insurance agent, dairy farm owner and operator and Justice of the Peace. During his ministry he served on many conference boards and agencies to help promote day care centers and workshops to promote reconciliation between races. He wrote and published articles in the Upper Room Devotional Guide and other religious publications. He served as hospital chaplain for Stockley Center and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Lord Baltimore Lions Club and past captain of the Civil Air Patrol.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen; three sons, Ivan P. Downing Jr., the Rev. Willi8am Downing and John B. Downing; three daughters, the Rev. Carol Lynn Gathagan, Mary Ellen Downing and Judy Lee Marvel-Jennings; a brother, Robert; two sisters, Dorothy Kendall and Mildred Kubiac; eight grandchildr3en; and seven great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, at St. George’s United Methodist Church, Clarksville, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. George’s Cemetery.



Karen Rogers-Hensler,
former Beebe employee
Karen A. Rogers-Hensler, 48, of Georgetown, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, in Georgetown of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Karen was born June 15, 1956, in Milford, the daughter of Lola Callaway Rogers of Georgetown and the late Robert D. Rogers Sr. She attended college in Key Biscayne, Fla. and Delaware Tech, receiving an associate degree as a phlebotomist. In the past she had worked at Beebe Medical Center and the Chester County Hospital lab departments.
She enjoyed her family and time spent with all of them. Loving the sunshine, she spent time at the beach, boating and at the pool. She was also very fond of animals.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her loving husband, Mark W. Hensler, whom she wed at Grace U.M. Church in October; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert D. Jr. and Penny Rogers of Georgetown; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, William and Kathleen Hensler of Berlin, Md.; a niece, Stacie Rogers of Georgetown; two nephews, Mark Rogers and Robert D. Rogers III, both of Georgetown; and several cousins, aunts and uncles.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 17, at Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Georgetown. The family invites everyone to the Georgetown Fire Hall, S. Bedford St., for a luncheon and fellowship following the burial.



William W. Grodzicki,
retired firefighter
William W. Grodzicki, 71, of Wilmington, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004.
Bill had been a firefighter for 22 years, retiring in 1981 from the City of Wilmington. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a lifelong member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church and loved football, especially the U of D Blue Hens and Philadelphia Eagles. He had also worked as as courier for LabCorp.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Beatrice M. Peden Grodzicki; a daughter, Theresa “Terri” M. Grodzicki; two sisters, Florence G. Doherty of Wilmington and Frances G. Hamill of Rehoboth Beach; nieces and nephews; and his walking companion, Trae.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 17, at St. Hedwig Church, 408 S. Harrison St., where friends may call at 9 a.m., followed by burial in Cathedral Cemetery. Arrangements by John F. Yasik Funeral Home, Wilmington.




Daniel J. Fickel,
retired police officer
Daniel J. Fickel, 68, of Laurel, Md., died from terminal cancer Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 at his residence in Rehoboth Beach. 
This devoted and loving husband and father is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maureen Elizabeth; sons, John and Greg; brothers-in-law, Dave and Peter; and dogs Aspen and Beethoven. 
The retired United States Capital Police Officer, neighbor and little league baseball coach was remembered Dec. 11, in his home at a wake honoring his fun-filled and loving life with family and friends.  Dan wished his remains be scattered at sea in a small family service later this spring.

Robert B. Cellurale,
American Brewery executive
Robert B. Cellurale, 85, of Wilmington, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, while vacationing in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Mr. Cellurale was a former executive with the American Brewing Company in Baltimore, retiring in 1984. He also worked with the Fort Pitt Brewery in Pittsburgh, Pa., Calvert Distillers of New York City, Churchill McKenssin Corp. in Baltimore and the Midstate Federal Savings and Loan Association, where he was vice president and a board member.
He was an Army Air Force veteran, serving five years and in World War II. His memberships included the Baltimore Rotary Club, the Sales Marketing Executive Club, Sports Boosters Club of Maryland, the Duquesne University Alumni Association and the Kappa Sigma Phi fraternity.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary W. Wilson Cellurale; two daughters, Betsy Bullock and her husband William of Sea Grove Beach, Fla. and Carolee Cellurale Kazmerowski of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Robert W. Cellurale of Lewes; his sister, Anne Stebbins of Ft. Lauderdale; and a brother, Ralph Cellurale of Latrobe, Pa; and seven grandchildren, Theodore Bullock of Chandler, Ariz., Courtney Bullock Vanderwalker of Mesa, Ariz., Whitney Wilson Forstner of Richmond, Va., Robert Kazmerowski and David Kazmerowski of Nashville, Tenn., and Robert B. Cellurale and Corey Cellurale, both of Lewes.
Services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Gerald “Jerry” Maroney,
retired master sergeant,
Gerald R. “Jerry” Maroney, 75, of Lewes, and formerly of Great Mills, Md., died peacefully Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at home.
Mr. Maroney was born in Pittston, PA and retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant in 1968. He enjoyed traveling and photography, but above all, aircraft.
He is survived by his wife Janet; son Robert J. Maroney and his wife Jane; two daughters, Suzie Rosenbery and her husband Curt, and Helen M. Donovan and husband John; a sister, Jean S. King; and eight grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Route 1 at Five Points, Lewes, at 11 a.m., Friday Dec. 17. Interment will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South, near Millsboro, at 1 p.m., with full military honors.

Margaret M. Stuchlik,
beloved wife, mother
Margaret M. Palmer Stuchlik, 93, a longtime resident of Milton, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Lifecare at Lofland Park, Seaford.
Margaret was born Nov. 5, 1911, near Nassau, the daughter of Robert E. Palmer and Mary Clendaniel Palmer of Lewes. Her father died when she was four years old and she was raised by George and Maggie Howard of Five Points.
Mrs. Stuchlik was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She as a member of Grace Church and was known as an excellent cook. Her cinnamon buns and tea rings were favorites of many of her friends and acquaintances.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Stuchlik Jr.; by her sisters, Stella DeClair of Michigan, Gertrude Pavlik Jester of Milford, Marietta Ward of Wilmington; half sister Helen Quigley of Lewes; and half brother Fred McGee of Seaford.
She is survived by sons Charles Stuchlik III and his wife,k Llywella of Tuscon, Az., Ludwig Stuchlik and his wife, Jane, of Rehoboth Beach and Jupiter, Fla.; a daughter, Joana S. Donovan and husband, Vincent, of Delmar, Md.; eight grandchildren, Charles F. Stuchlik UIV and his wife, Kristie, of Georgetown, Terry Stuchlik and his wife, Kelly of Hockessin, Christopher Stuchlik of Indianapolis, Ind., Brian Donovan and his wife, Virginia, of Delmar, Lisa Donovan and her husband, Antoon Speters of Watkinsville, Ga. David Stuchlik and his wife, Rebecca of Fruitland, Md., Timothy Stuchlik and his wife, Laurie, of Milton, and J. Todd Stuchlik and his wife, Jacqueline, of Wilmington; 12 great-grandchildren; a half sister, Margaret Zill of Newport; two half brothers, Everett McGee and wife Jean, of Bridgeville, and Norman McGee and his wife, Dorothy, of Laurel; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Stuchlik of Milton and Josephine Lombardi of Wilmington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, at Short Funeral Services, Federal Street, Milton, with funeral services at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

Carolyn K. Barber,
served the Lord
Carolyn K. Barber of Long Neck was called home to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at home in the presence of her husband of 49 years, Kenneth.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., March 23, 1935, to Ray and Irene Kline, Carolyn was a graduate of Meyers High School and attended Wilkes College. Carolyn and Ken were to observe their 50th wedding anniversary in Aug. 2005. For the first 15 years of their married life the Barbers served in the business world and from 1970 on, Carolyn served alongside her husband in the pastoral ministry of five churches in New Jersey, Long Island, N.Y., Oley, Pa. and Long Neck.
Carolyn was afflicted with scleroderma for almost 50 years, hospitalized more than 30 times and had numerous surgeries.
After the death of her first son, Kenneth Frantz Barber Jr. in Sept. 1956, Carolyn came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as her Savior and her love for and dependence upon Jesus Christ always helped her to bear the pains, sorrows and bereavements. The Lord blessed Carolyn and Ken with a son, Bradley Kenneth, through adoption in 1956; a son, Kenneth David, and in 1964 the Lord blessed them with a daughter, Cathy Lynn, through adoption. Carolyn has always had a strong, faithful and enduring love for her family and always had the strong support and encouragement of each member of her family.
Carolyn taught several women’s Bible studies and further testified of her Savior through extensive ministry in oil and watercolor painting that began with the hand painting of thank you and greeting cards. Her personal ministry grew to encompass hand-painted cards, oil paintings and watercolors that grace the walls of the homes of many friends and neighbors.
She has lived with her husband and family in eighth different states and in Brussels, Belgium. Since 1998, she had permanently resided in Pot Nets Creekside, Long Neck, with her husband, who was the founding pastor of New Life Bible Fellowship Church of Delmarva in the Long Neck area.
Besides her husband of 49 years, she is survived by her son, Bradley Barber and her daughter, Cathy Weitzel, both of Wyomissing, Pa.; her daughter-in-law, Grace Barber and son-in-law, Steven Weitzel; and four grandchildren, Amanda and Rachel Barber and Paul and Alexandra Weitzel; and a brother, Roger, of Wilkes-Barre.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19, at Melson Funeral Home, Long Neck Road. Contributions are suggested to Building Fund of New Life Bible Fellowship Church of Delmarva, 24771 Cannon Rd., Long Neck DE 9966.



Kathryn “Kaye” Clothier,
known for needlepoint
Kathryn “Kaye” E. Clendaniel Clothier, 81, of Lincoln, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford.
Mrs. Clothier was born May 3, 1923 in Laurel, daughter of the late Ira and Flossie Callaway Elliott.
She was a full time homemaker and had been employed by the state of Delaware as deputy register of wills for eight years, retiring in 1972.
She was an avid bowler and did excellent needlepoint.
She was a member of Lincoln United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard M. Clendaniel Sr. in 1982 and by her second husband, Edgar N. Clothier in 1992.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara Fitzgerald of Lauderhill, Fla. and Joan and Wayne Davis of Milford; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Betsy Clendaniel of Lincoln; a stepdaughter and her husband, Suzy and Al Maurizo of Springfield, Pa.; a stepson and his wife, Richard and Marie Clothier of Rehoboth Beach; eight grandchildren, Brian Davis and his wife Nicole, Suzanne Elton and her husband Rick, Ami Rae and her husband Ryan, Michael Davis and his fiancéée, Christine Fehnel, Jeff Semans and his wife Cordelia, Tommy Clendaniel, Megan Fitzgerald and Kirby Fitzgerald; and five great-grandchildren.
Services and burial were private.

Edward Joseph Connor,
retired physician
Edward Joseph Connor, 72, of South Bethany Beach, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at home.
Dr. Connor was born in Troy, N.Y., the son of the late John Francis and Dorothy Curtis Connor. He was a retired physician, obstetrician and gynecologist for 36 years. After graduating from Albany Medical College and his residence work at Georgetown University, Dr. Connor practiced medicine for 33 years in the Washington, D.C. area and for three years in Lewes.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Piscataway, Md. and St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bethany Beach.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathleen; seven children, Patrick, Dorothy, Theresa, Kathleen, Colleen, Kevin and Mac; a brother, Jack; a sister, Dorothy Ray; and 11 grandchildren.
Services were held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Bethany Beach, with burial in Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, Dagsboro.

Anne Maria (Beecraft) Richman,
retired bookkeeper
Anne Maria Beecraft Richman, 99, of Lewes and formerly of Upper Darby and Summeytown, Pa., died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, of natural causes at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mrs. Richman was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Feb. 18, 1905, of William H. and Margaret Ford Beecroft. She had been a bookkeeper and worked in accounting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle W. Richman Sr.; a son, Merle W. Richman Jr.; and a grandson, Alexander Bradley III.
She is survived by a son, David F. Richman of Lewes; a daughter, Ann Maria Bradley of Harrisburg, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, Broomall, Pa., with a funeral mass at St. Anastasia Church, Newtown Square, Pa., with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Pa.

Carrie Marie “Ninety” Mitchell,
worked for Easter Seals
Carrie Marie “Ninety” Mitchell, 42, of Millsboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, of heart failure at home.
Ms. Mitchell was born Feb. 7, 1962 in Lewes, daughter of James H. Mitchell Sr. of Greenville, N.C. and the late Carrie J. Atkinson Mitchell Best.
She received her education at Howard T. Ennis School in Georgetown, and worked for Easter Seals in Millsboro.
In 2002, she was diagnosed with an inoperable heart murmur that ended her life with congenital heart failure.
Ms. Mitchell was raised in a Christian home and learned the values of a Christian life. As a child, she attended Trinity Sunset Church No. 2 in Frankford. Later, she attended the Pentecostal Church of God in Millsboro.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by five brothers.
She is survived by her father, James H. Mitchell Sr. of Greenville, N.C.; two brothers, Arthur L. Mitchell of Salisbury, Md. and Luther T. Mitchell of Selbyville; seven sisters, Mary L. Davis of Milton, Carolyn J. Cannon of Georgetown, Margaret S. Hopkins of Millsboro, Beverly Rickards of Dover; Hazel A. Jenkins of Bridgeville, Finisha T. Hopkins of Selbyville and Faith N. Mitchell of Greenville; her caregiver, Felicia Smith of Millsboro; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Services were held at St. John’s Second Baptist Church, Millsboro, with burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Millsboro.



Virginia Mary Young,
retired sales associate
Virginia Mary Young, 85, of Long Neck, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, in Beebe Medical Center.
Mrs. Young was born in Six Mile Run, Pa. She retired as a sales associate from Strawbridge and Clothier, Plymouth Meeting, Pa. She attended Long Neck Methodist Church before her health declined. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeffrey W. Young, in 1996.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Gloria Young of Indian Shores, Fla. and David and Maria Young of Ambler, Pa.; a daughter and her companion, Karen Young and Craig Koffel of Millsboro; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Janice Rohm of Lebanon, Pa.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lois Lannutti of Lebanon and Helen and Robert Fleck of Monroeton, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Michelle Young of State College, Pa. and Monique Young of Ambler.
Services will be held at noon, Thursday, Dec. 16, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Granville R. Carey
native of Laurel
Granville R. Carey, age 79, of Lewes, passed away peacefully at Harbor Healthcare in Lewes on Tuesday, December 7, 2004.
Mr. Carey was born in Laurel, and was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church in Lewes.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Simmons Carey; his sons William R. Carey and his wife June, Robert C. Carey and Granville Ralph Carey; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norris Givens and George R. Carey as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Carey served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His many community activities included coach and player agent for the Lewes Little League over a good many years; a member of the Lewes Lions Club and the American Legion of Seaford, DE. Additionally his activities included working closely with the youth group of St. Peter’s.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Second and Market streets, Lewes, at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 11. A reception will follow immediately in the Parish Hall.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes, Lewes.

Carl K. Walters Jr.,
retired master sergeant
Carl K. Walters Jr., 80, of Lewes and formerly of Lancaster, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Walters was born in Lancaster, the son of the late Carl Sr. and Laura Kline Walters.
He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Army in 1967, after serving his country for 24 years in Turkey, Korea and Germany, and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He had also previously served in the U.S. Navy and was a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
After his retirement from the armed forces, he served as the Lancaster, Pa. city streets superintendent from 1968 to 1970 and then was a building supplies salesman until 1978.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lewes, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and a life member of Disabled American Veterans Association, and formerly was a member of Media Heights Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ella Mae Lear Walters, in 1970; and by two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Felice E. Paterniani Walters of Coatesville, Pa.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kim K. Walters and Wayne C. and Nancy Wooten Walters, all of Wilmington, and Skip J. and Pamela Bupp Walters of Lancaster; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra and Laurence Hall of Millersville, Pa. and Lynn M. former yacht club commodore
David J. Moxey, 68, of Lewes, formerly of Bel Air and Elkton, Md., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at the home of a friend in Bel Air.
Mr. Moxey was a salesman at Boulevard Ford at Midway in Lewes and a member of the Maryland National Guard.
He was a member of Conley’s United Methodist Church in Angola, was past commodore of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club Association and the Bush River Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara R. Moxey; a son, David J. Moxey Jr.; a daughter Deborah Batzer; stepson, Lloyd Shaw; stepdaughters, Donna O’Brien and Sandra Parlier; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 11 at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, with burial private.

Veronica Cannon,
active in church, community
Veronica Cannon, 85, of Wilmington, and formerly of Greenwood, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 at HCR/Manor Care of Brandywine Hundred, where she relocated for care in early 2002.
Mrs. Cannon was born the eleventh of 12 children in rural Reed City, Mich. on Feb 8, 1919 to the late Phillip Kailing and Johanna (Costello) Kailing.
She graduated from Reed City High School and received a degree in rural Elementary Education from Kalamazoo College, now Western Michigan University. For six years she taught grade school in one-room school houses in Osceola County, MI.
During World War II, she was active in the USO through which she met her late husband of 57 years, Norman H. Cannon, then of Bridgeville. They settled in Greenwood after the war.
Mrs. Cannon was a dedicated family woman and tenacious advocate who worked in her church, school and family-related civic organizations. She delighted in seeing all children learn. She pursued interests in current events, public affairs, conservation and wildlife.
She was a pioneer parishioner of Our Lady of Lourde’s Catholic Church, Seaford. There she taught catechism for decades, including many confirmation classes and was a mentor to many adults in several lay ministries. She was the first female Eucharistic Minister in her parish and was a member/officer of Pastoral Council for many years. She was active with the Liturgy Committee, BVM Sodality, Ladies Guild Bridgeville, St. Anthony’s Resale Shop, Bible Study and Prayer groups. She loved sharing her faith through educational and social services in the Church and community.
Mrs Cannon was an honored lifetime member of the Delaware State PTA in which she held several offices for many years in Greenwood and Woodbridge PTA’s, Delaware State PTA, and State Executive Board. She was an active delegate to President Jimmy Carter’s White House Conference on Families and the subsequent Action Committee. She was a member of the Delaware Foster Care Review Board for several years.
She was a community captain for March of Dimes and American Cancer Society funds campaigns.
Mrs Cannon was preceded in death by her husband, Norman H Cannon, who died in November 2002; a son, Thomas E. Cannon; a grandson, Phillip A. Cannon III; and all her siblings.
She is survived by four sons and three daughters, Philip A. Cannon II, (and his wife Connie) Oak Lawn, IL; Ann M. Cannon, East Windsor, NJ; Mary E. Cannon, Bear; Patrick J. Cannon (and his wife Kathleen), Greenwood; Jeffrey A. Cannon, Greenwood; Nora Cannon Evans, Wilmington; and Kenneth K. Cannon (and his wife Pam), Harrington.
She is survived by seven grandchildren, Janelle Cannon, Jamie Cannon, Colbi Cannon, Katie Evans, Dawn Cannon, Carlea Cannon and Christine Evans; and three great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Loomis, Cadillac Mich. and Virgil A. Cannon, Bridgeville; and one sister-in-law, Elnora Whiteley, Seaford.
Services were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Seaford, with burial in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Marian E. Snyder, 82, of Dover, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, surrounded by her family after a long illness.
Mrs. Snyder was born Feb. 22, 1922 in Springfield, Mass. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1940 and met her husband, Robert G. Snyder, at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts. They were married on Oct. 12, 1947 and the couple moved to Dover in 1955.
In addition to her beloved husband of 57 years, she is survived by her daughters, Linda Tease and her husband, Bruce, of Newark; Denise Holleger and her husband, Bayard, of Rehoboth Beach; Diane Wooding and her husband, Charles, of Hockessin; her grandchildren, Bree Tease of Newark, Kelly Holleger of Orlando, Fla. And Charles Wooding of Hockessin; two sisters, Stella Mondoux and Doris O’Connor; a brother, Robert Cormier of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at the Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 South Bradford Street in Dover where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be private.



Edward T. Davis
retired truck driver
Edward Thomas Davis, 81, of Millsboro, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004 in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Davis was born in Mappsville, Va., the son of the late George and Ola Davis. He was a truck driver for Bob Jennings Logging Co. in Milton and later retired from Townsends, Inc. in Millsboro. He also worked for the CHEER Center in Oak Orchard until his health failed.
Mr. Davis was a member of Dickerson Chapel AME Church in Millsboro where he sang in the male chorus for more than 50 years, served on the Usher Board, was a trustee and sang in the Chancel Choir.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brother and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine Hopkins Davis; a son, Douglas P. Hobbs of Millsboro; a daughter, Shirley M. Davis of of Millsboro; two goddaughters, Marie Dennis of Pocomoke City, Md. And Ola Grace Marshall of Horntown, Va.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Dickerson Chapel AME Church on Route 113 in Millsboro where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery, Millsboro.

Vietnam veteran
Daniel Joseph Brett, 60, of Rehoboth Beach, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004 at home with two of his sisters and best friends.
He was born in Hackensack, N.J. and was a Jersey boy most of his life. He served in Vietnam from 1968-70 with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Upon leaving the service he was a barber and then a pipe fitter.
He is survived by his mother, Josephine L. Brett Sr.; three sisters, Josephine L. Brett Jr., Edith H. Wort and Mary Y. Brett, all of Delaware; and a brother, Patrick M. Brett of New Jersey.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Route 1 at Five Points. He will be buried at sea, departing from Fisherman’s Wharf in Lewes.

Robert S. Jones III, 71, of Lewes, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at his residence.
Mr. Jones was born Jan. 22, 1933 in Baltimore, Md., to the late Robert S. Jones, Jr. and Ida F. “Fritz” Jones.
Mr. Jones was employed by Verizon for 42 years as an engineering assistant. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He was a member of American Legion Post 28 and AMVETS Post 2.
He is  survived by his wife Mary E. (Armsworthy) Jones; two daughters, Kathleen  Law and Leslie  Burgoyne; a son Stephen Jones; and three grandchildren, Courtney Law, Zachary Jones and Kyle Jones.
There will be a Memorial Service at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10, at Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, with the Rev. Harold Hughes officiating.  Burial will be private.

Charles E. “Charley” Carter Jr. 48, of Los Angeles, Calif., died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Kaiser Hospital in California.
Mr. Carter was born Aug. 2, 1956, in Lewes. He is survived by a brother, Wayne S. Sunkett of Kentucky; four sisters, Rowena D. Carter of Frederica, Selena M. Burris of Bridgeville, Margaret L. Carter and Vonceia B. Brazier, both of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, Herbert Burris of Bridgeville; a sister-in-law, Kim Sunkett of Kentucky; a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Carter.

Robert J. Ellingsworth, 80, of Ellendale, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at home.
Mr. Ellingsworth was born in Ellendale the son of the late William D. and Anna Marker Ellingsworth. He was a custodian with the Milford School District for many years, retiring in 1986. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margie Ellingsworth, and a granddaughter, Shari Marie Taylor.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie Hitchens Ellingsworth; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Bud Clark of Milton; two sons, Bobbie Ellingsworth and Michael Ellingsworth, both of Ellendale; four grandchildren, Scott Taylor, Chris Taylor, Stacey Ellingsworth and Brittany Ellingsworth; two great-grandchildren, Cori Taylor and Jake Taylor; and a sister, Doris Carey of Millsboro.

Margaret A. Cook, 62, of Millsboro, died of complications as a result of a car accident Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, on Delaware 24.
Mrs. Cook was born in Upland, Pa., the daughter of the late Elmer and Margaret Martz. She resided in Claymont before moving to Millsboro 21 years ago.
She worked in Food Lion as a deli clerk.
Mrs. Cook raised two of her grandchildren, Christine Brady and Sgt. Robert T. Houser Jr. She also enjoyed spending a great deal of time with her grandson, Matthew A. Cook.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert H. Cook Sr., in 1992; and a sister, Eileen Titerence, in 1995.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Albert H. and Karen Cook of Milton; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Michael Cardenas of Millsboro; two sisters and brothers-in-law, June and Lester McLauren of Middletown, Pa. and Barbara and Peter Ferrara of Middletown; a brother, James Martz of Elkton, Md.; a granddaughter, Christine Brady; two grandsons, Robert T. Houser Jr. and Matthew H. Cook; six great-grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Ray Dorman, 65, of Lewes, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md.
Mr. Dorman was born in Lewes, son of the late Carlton and Almeta Davidson Dorman.
He served in the Army National Guard in Lewes.
He had worked as a heavy equipment operator for the M.L. Joseph Construction Company, Georgetown.
He was a member of Conley’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Angola.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Pat; a son, Kenneth Ray Dorman II of Seaford; four daughters, Terri A. Rogers and Marlene D. Harmon, both of Millsboro, Kelly L. Dorman of Lewes, and Dawn R. Dorman of Fenwick Island; and five grandchildren, Travis, Liberty, Kenneth Ray, Cruz and Luke.

David J. Gardoski, 57, of Quakertown, Pa., died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, in Valley Manor Nursing Home, Springfield Township.
Mr. Gardoski was born in Scranton, son of Chester and Helen Engates Gardoski of Lewes.
He was employed with the former Nation’s Credit Bank, Allentown, for several years before retiring. Previously he worked at Red Hill Ford and Schiethauer Chevrolet.
Mr. Gardoski was a member of the Lighthouse Gospel Fellowship. Pennsburg, where he was active as a treasurer, finance committee and on the church board. He was also involved with the Yoke Fellowship Prison Ministry, Promise Keeper, Everlasting Life Ministries and as a coordinator of the Lehigh Valley Angel Tree.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sara Gardoski.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years. Marianne Miller Gardoski; his parents, Chester and Helen Engates Gardoski of Lewes; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tara and Joseph Nuyianes of West Norriton, Pa. and Kate Gardoski of Quakertown; a brother, John Gardoski of Lewes; and a sister, Gloria Stokes of Phillipsburg, N.J.
Services were held in the Lighthouse Gospel Fellowship, Pennsburg. Burial will be in the Limerick Garden of Memories.

Chester Burr Knapp Jr., 69, of Vineland, N.J., and formerly of Milton, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, after a long illness, in Newcomb Hospital, Vineland.
Mr. Knapp, while living in Milton, worked at Cargill, now Allen Foods, in Harbeson. He was also employed with Scott Paper Co., retiring in 1998.
Mr. Knapp was a devoted member of Revival Fellowship Church in Bridgeton, where he was an evangelist and deacon. During his 21-year membership at the church, he was involved in outreach ministries at the Cumberland County Prison System, the Blind Center and the Cumberland Manor Nursing Center.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Corrine Knapp; eight sons, Chester B. Knapp III of Dover, Thomas A. Knapp of Milton, Charles E. Knapp of Seaford, Jonathan E. Knapp of Philadelphia, Arthur A. Knapp of Frederica, Naval officer George S. Knapp of San Antonio; and Ronnie Charleston and Randy Charleston, both of Vineland; four daughters, Helena Knapp of Milton, Edna Peterson of Lincoln, Tracy Miles of Mays Landing, N.J. and Renee Charleston of Vineland; a brother and sister-in-law, George and Anne Knapp of White Plains, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Ola Mae Johnson of Vineland; 22 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sons-in-law; and a host of other in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Irene J. Kelley,

Irene J. Kelley, 84, of Milton and formerly of Wilmington, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Beebe Medical Center.
Mrs. Kelley was born in Arkansas City, Kan., the daughter of the late J. Bert and Flonire Marie Burley Hughes. She moved to Milton three years ago from Wilmington. She enjoyed going to casinos and especially spending time with her family. She was a cosmetologist for Palmroys in Wilmington for 10 years before retiring in 1980.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Kelley, in 1976.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Barker of Milton; a daughter, Judy Scribner, and husband, Scott, of Grangeville, Idaho; five grandchildren, Valarie Vasquez, Carl Barker Jr., Matt Scribner, Carrie Scribner and Jeanie Scribner; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Ms. German was a homemaker and devoted mother to her family.
She is survived by her parents, Myers Johnson Sr. of Milton and Esther Lee of Delmar, Md.; two sons, Harold W. German III and Ronald Wyatt German, both of Seaford; two daughters, Tabatha Ann German and Stephani Yvonne German, both of Seaford; two brothers, Myers Johnson Jr. of Seaford and John Wesley Johnson of Delmar, Md.; two sisters, Cheryl Botdorf of Seaford and Suzette Donovan of Bridgeville; and two grandchildren.

Robert L. Tjaden Sr., 79, of Wilmington, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004.
Bob served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the Pacific Fleet. He was one of the first Navy Seabee units to arrive in Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped. He was a life insurance sales agent with Monumental Life Insurance Co., retiring in 1979 after 20 years.
He was a master Mason with St. John’s Lodge No. 2 and a 322nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason. Bob was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, fishing and traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Anne Tjaden; his sons, Robert L. Tjaden Jr. and his wife Linda of Harrington; Keith A. Tjaden and his wife Sharon of Wilmington; is daughter, Cynthia A. Brown and her husband, Danny, of Rehoboth Beach; his brothers, Hiram Tjaden of Marshalltown and Granville Tjaden of Virginia; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Sean T. Monahan, 47, of Ellenville, N.Y., a lifelong resident and former owner of Monahan’s Reef of Greenfield Park, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in Kingston Hospital, New York.
Born Dec. 26, 1956, in Ellenville, he was the son of the late Robert and Gladys Laubner Monahan. He attended the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew in Ellenville and was previously a waiter at the former Potpourri Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach.

Mrs. Kester was born in Pender County, N.C. and was a retired commercial insurance underwriter for E. Walter Helm Insurance Company of Media, Pa.
She was a member of Ocean View Presbyterian Church, Ocean View.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Kester, in 2001.
She is survived by two sons, William A. Kester and his wife Carol of Bethany Beach; Robert W. Kester of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Kurt Kester and his wife Marybeth of Mansfield Township, N.J., Kimberly Friedman and her husband Les of Marlton, N.J.; Ryan McDonough and his wife Jennifer of Wisconsin, currently stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army, and Nick McDonough of Wisconsin; six great-grandchildren, Leanne Friedman, Nicolas and Karissa Kester, James, Nicholas and Jack McDonough.

Paul Dennis Phelan, 58, of Lewes, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at home.
Mr. Phelan was born Aug. 12, 1946 in Washington, D.C. to the late James Thomas Phelan and the late Alice (Boschert) Phelan.
Mr. Phelan lived in Rehoboth Beach for 20 years; he was formerly of Washington, D.C.  He worked as a taxi driver in Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his son David  Howard of San Francisco, Calif. and three brothers, James Wentz Phelan of Jacksonville, Fla., John Phelan of New Rochelle, N.Y. and Patrick Phelan of Everett, Wash.

Hugh Timothy Collins Jr., 91 of Bridgeville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004 at Milford Center, Milford. He was the oldest living retired Delaware State Trooper.
Hugh was born in Wilmington on Feb. 15, 1913, son of the late Laura (Hand) and Hugh T. Collins.  He graduated from St. Ann’s Commercial High School in Wilmington and served in the United States Army from May 1943 to January 1946, a member of Company C, 543 rd Engineer and Shore Regiment in the Philippines.  He received the American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, and Good Conduct and Victory medals.  Hugh was a member of the Delaware State Police from April 1938 to January 1963.  He was a recruit of Delaware’s first State Police Academy.  He retired as a captain and director of the Youth Division.
Hugh was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a past president of the Bridgeville Lions Club.  He also was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post 6, Seaford, Delaware.  A devout Catholic, Hugh was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Seaford, for more than 60 years.  From 1953-1956 he was the director of Camp Barnes on the Little Assawoman Bay, a camp for deserving children throughout the state, that provides them with an opportunity to experience life at a traditional summer youth camp.  Hugh was a member of the Retired Delaware State Police Association.
In addition to his parents, his brothers John and James , and his sister Florence Collins
preceded him in death.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia (Taylor) Collins, of Bridgeville;  his five children:  H. Timothy Collins III and wife Gretchen of Fenwick Island, Mark T. and wife Debbie  of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.,  C. Todd Collins and wife Donna  of Jefferson, Md., Kate (Collins) Marvel and Harvey Marvel of Milford and H. Ray Collins of Bridgeville; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Stephen and Paula Collins and their children Aiden and Emma;  Matt and Kathleen Collins and their children Brianna and Timothy;  Brian Collins and Kirstan Bembenek; Katrin, Sara, and Bridget Casey,  Jessica and Laura Collins; Meghan and Bryan Grimm, and Abbie, Ryan and Josh Marvel.
 A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Seaford, with interment with State Police honors in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Blades
