Mary A. Rykiel,
devoted matriarch
Mary A. Rykiel, 88, of Wilmington, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Harbor Healthcare Center, Lewes.
Mrs. Rykiel was born July 2, 1918, to Joseph and Maryanna Kowalczyk, who were from Poland.
Raised in Wilmington, Mary grew up in a large, tight-knit Roman Catholic family. Although she was a gifted student, she left school early, becoming a waitress at the Sugar Bowl in Wilmington and working other jobs to help out her family during the Great Depression. In 1938, after a whirlwind courtship, she married Walter J. Rykiel, the love of her life.
Following the war, they moved to Forty Acres neighborhood, where she lived for more than 50 years. Since her own education was cut short, she was a taskmaster when it came to studying. All four of her children attended the University of Delaware and one ended up teaching there in the communications department.
During the 1960s and 1970s, her Lincoln Street home was a festive gathering spot for family, friends and neighbors. Whether eating crabs at DiNardo’s, having a beer at the Logan House for entertaining at home, she was the life of the party.
She was a superb cook, and her recipes for golumpki and potato salad are legendary. A longtime member of St. Ann’s Parish, she was a regular bingo player at the Graham Senior Center. In 2001, she relocated to Milton, due to her declining health, where her granddaughter, Holly Ross, was her primary caregiver until her recent stay at Harbor Health.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. in 1964; her sons, Walter T. in 1994; and John W. in 1996.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph L. of Rehoboth Beach and Robert R. and his wife Judith of Lewes; two sisters, Rose Grodzicki and Martha O’Day, both of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Holly Ross of Milton, Enid Tchir and her husband Matthew of Miami, Fla., Eric and Jason Rykiel, both of Newark; and four great-grandchildren, Cody, Matthew, Jordan and Cole.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Ann’s Church, Wilmington, with burial in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.
