James M. ‘Jess’ Willard,
Dewey home owner
James M. “Jess” Willard, 72, loving husband and father, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., due to complications following pancreatic cancer surgery.
He was the husband of Midge Willard, with whom he shared 29 years of marriage.
Born May 9, 1934 in Mansfield, Oh., he was the son of the late James A. and Harriett Hale Willard.
Jess graduated magna cum laude with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Oh. and went to work for the DuPont Company in 1956. In 1968 he moved to Wilmington, and worked at DuPont’s Experimental Station and Chestnut Run.
In 1983, Jess and his family moved to Kennett Square, Pa. and owned a second home in Dewey Beach, where they have spent the summer for many years. In 2002, they moved to Siesta Key, Fla., which is their current residence. Jess remained actively involved in each community.
Jess had many wonderful friends whom he cherished. He was also an avid golfer, loved traveling with his family, being at the beach, and caring for the many animals that wandered in and out of his home over the years.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by five loving children, Jean Ann W. Guliano of East Greenwich, R.I.; James R. “Jim” Willard of Wilmington; Carl W. Thompson IV and his wife Jennifer Thompson of Madison, Conn.; Kristin K. Jankowski, VMD and her husband Art Jankowski, VMD of Newark; and Rick Willard of Siesta Key; and by seven grandchildren, Neil A. Guliano, Jack R. Thompson, James W. Guliano, Eric A. Jankowski, Julie K. Thompson, Mark J. Jankowski and Chloe G. Thompson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 30, at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Rt. 52 in Mendenhall, Pa. Interment will follow at Union Hill Cemetery in Kennett Square.

Mildred B. Holloman,
Belltown native
Mildred B. “Millie D” Holloman, 102, of Belltown died peacefully Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, surrounded by her family in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Charles Bowden, Dover.
Mrs. Holloman was born Sept. 1, 1904, in Belltown, daughter of the late Thomas and Lydia Ward.
She worked as a babysitter, cook, housemaid, caterer and laundress for many years.
Mrs. Holloman enjoyed singing, cooking, shopping, traveling, dressing sharp and spending quality time with her children.
Her home was always open to friends and they could look forward to a good meal and a good time.
Mrs. Holloman was an active member of John Wesley Church, Belltown. She was known as the mother of the church because she was the oldest member. Her greatest joy was serving her church in any capacity, including doing fundraisers, singing in two choirs, attending Bible study, serving as a member of the women’s society and the usher board, and going to choir joy nights and church camps.
She attended Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, Dover, after moving in with her daughter, and acquired many friends and extended family.
Mrs. Holloman was loved by many people.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Holloman Sr.; two sons, William Holloman Jr. and Robert Holloman; a grandson, Charles Bowden Jr.; her companion, Caleb Paynter; three sisters; nine brothers; and several nieces and nephews, including most recently Linford Ward, Delores Johnson and Edna Brittingham.
She is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Mary H. and Charles C. Bowden Sr. of Dover; a son and his companion, Parcell E. Holloman and Ernestine Brittingham of Woodside; eight grandsons, Dr. Reginald Bowden, and his wife, Dr. Nicole Bowden, of Apopka, Fla., Michael Bowden of Dover, Robert Polk of Wilmington, Parcell Ciriwithian of Augusta, Ga., Tommy Hughes, Billy “BJ” Holloman and Dwayne “DJ” Holloman, all of Lewes and Lance Holloman of Newport News, Va.; three granddaughters, Marcell “Poochie” Jefferson of Milton and Sharon Farlow and Monique “Nicci” Milbourne, both of Dover; three great-granddaughters, Eisha Holloman of Milton, Teayra Bowden of Wilmington and Maaliyah Bowden of Apopka; an adopted great-grandson, Jamal Williams of Wilmington; four adopted daughters, Retha W. Organ, Mary W. Hutchins and Sandra Steele, all of Dover and Brenda Milbourne of Rehoboth Beach; an adopted granddaughter, Nicole Wideman of Wilmington; two adopted sons, Herman Paynter of Lewes and Elder Michael Williams of Dover; a niece, the Rev. Grace W. Boyer of Wilmington; three nephews, Rudolf Ward and Edward F. Salters, both of Wilmington and Robert Miller and his wife, Kuline, of Lewes; and a host of special neighbors, very close cousins and numerous friends.
Memorial services will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29, in Calvary Baptist Church, Queen Street, Dover.
Services will be noon, Saturday, Sept. 30, in John Wesley Church, Belltown, where friends may call two hours earlier. The Pastor Thomas Johnson will officiate.
Burial will be in Christ Church Cemetery, Harbeson.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice Compassionate Care, 5601 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Clarence Demby,
Cape district retiree
Clarence Demby, 57, of Lewes died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Demby was born Aug. 25, 1949, in Easton, Md., son of the late John and Rosie Demby.
He grew up in Dover and attended Dover High School.
Mr. Demby was inducted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 2, 1969, and served with the 315th Supply and Service Co. He also served as a member of the Delaware Army Reserve, retiring in 1993.
He was employed with the Cape Henlopen School District for 23 years before retiring in 1995. He was also employed by Superfresh in Rehoboth Beach at the time of his death.
Mr. Demby had a great love and devotion for his family.
He is survived by his wife whom he married June 23, 1973, Teresa B. Morris Demby; a sister, Helen Loper of Felton; a brother, Lewis Demby; three-sisters-in-law and their husbands, Jacalyn and Anthony Streett of Lewes, Lorna Harmon of Lewes and the Rev. Annie and James Custis; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Dr. Marvin and MaryAnn Morris of Millsboro, Lloyd and Laura Morris and, Keith Morris, all of Lewes; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
Services were held in Harmony Methodist Church, Millsboro. Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Don Wayne Johnson,
Chestertown native
Don Wayne Johnson, 56, of Milton, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2006, at home.
Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 8, 1949, the son of George H. Johnson of Chestertown, Md. and the late Thelma “Sugar” Johnson.
He was raised in Chestertown and was a 1967 graduate of Chestertown High School. He moved to Washington, D.C. and attended the University of Maryland and George Washington University, where he studied business and agriculture. While living there he worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and John Mandis Restaurant. He moved to Delaware/Pennsylvania working as a manager for Draper/King Cole, Hanover Foods and Island Farms before retiring.
Along with his mother, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary Blyman Johnson.
He is survived by his daughter, Heather P. Johnson of Annapolis, Md.; four stepbrothers, James, William, Mark and David Blyman, all of Worton, Md.; and a stepsister, Sheila Dlugoborski of Lynch, Md. He was previously married to Nancy Rose, formerly of Chestertown.
A memorial service was held in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, with burial in Cambridge, Md.

Clark E. Jacobs,
Post 28 member
Clark E. Jacobs, 67, of Long Neck and formerly of Newark, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was the son of the late Joseph and Grace Jacobs and graduated from Media High School in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Defensive Atomic Security Agency School and graduated from the South Eastern Signal Corps School.
He was an active member of American Legion Post 28, Oak Orchard/Riverdale. His special interests and hobbies included military and war history, car restorations, model boats and car racing. He was a dedicated Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State football fan. A loving husband and father, Clark especially enjoyed spending time with his four precious grandchildren, James, Morgan, Reagan and Mason.
He was predeceased by his two sisters, Gladys Smith and brother-in-law, Edwin G. Smith, and Virginia Biddle and brother-in-law, Joseph Biddle.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Judy; two daughters, Tracey Inglee of Mount Bethel, Pal. and Carrie Norona and her husband Eric of North East, Md.; his grandchildren; and three nephews.
A graveside service was held at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. The family suggests memorial contributions to American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Rd., Millsboro DE 19966. Arrangements by the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services.

Mary Elizabeth Bush,
Sussex homemaker
Mary Elizabeth Jerman Bush, 82, of Lewes, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Bush was born in Milton, March 16, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Elva Jerman and Matilda MegeeJerman.
She was a homemaker. In her younger years enjoyed singing and dancing.
Mrs. Bush is survived by her husband of 60 years, Leroy O. Bush; three daughters,  Mary Megee of Kentucky; Shirley Bradley of Miltonand Peggy Carmine of Lewes; two sons, Chester Bush of Angola, and Jeff Bush of Lewes; two sisters, Clara Scarborough of Milford, and Elsie Bounds of California; two brothers, Raymond Jarman of California and Thomas Jerman of Dagsboro; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa Bush; and a son, Raymond Bush.
Funeral services will be held Saturday Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with Pastor Randy Booth officiating.
A viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be at Henlopen Memorial Park, Highway One, Milton.

William J. Link,
retired machinist
William J. Link, 89. died at his home in Lewes, Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006.
Mr. Link was born in Philadelphia, Pa., only child of William Everett Link formerly of Washington, D.C., and Mary Margaret Mae Luttrell Link Bateman, formerly of Ireland and Philadelphia. He was beloved by grandparents Ellen M. and James Shields of Philadelphia and stepfather David Bateman of Cape May, N.J. 
He was a member of St. Agnes Parish in Philadelphia, where he was baptized and completed elementary school. He graduated from Shaw Junior High School and West Philadelphia High School. He was previously employed at General Electric as a machinist.
During the World War II, he was accepted into the submarine service, but the war effort required him to continue building submarines at Cramp’s Ship Yard including the Escolar. He also worked at Brills and Budd Corporation, and was employed by Atlantic Refining (ARCO) for 33 years before retiring to Bechtelsville, PA in July 1981 and to Lewes in 1988. 
He had a great love of all animals, especially dogs, horses and birds. He raised parakeets for many years. He was a humanitarian and good Samaritan to his many friends and neighbors. He was active in Cub Scouts and CYO football at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish and the Boy Scouts in Philadelphia. He participated in Archbishop Prendergast High School Variety Show fundraisers. He was also a member of Annunciation B.V.M. Parish in Havertown, Pa., and Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Bally, Pa., as well as a member of the choir. At the time of his death, he was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Lewes. He participated in the Meals-On-Wheels Program, Lewes.
In addition to his parents, and wife, Anna, who died July 14, 2006, he was preceded in death by three children, Baby Joseph Link, Baby David Link and Brian Patrick Link.
He is survived by 11 children, William Link, Philadelphia; Patricia Canby, Lewes; Dennis Link, Lansdale, Pa.; Judith Salvatore, Milton; Joseph J. Link, Townbank, N.J.; Gerard Link, Lititz, Pa.; Maryellen Fullmer, Lewes, DE; Loretta Link Esterly, Boyertown, PA & Lewes, DE; Raymond J. Link, Middletown; Veronica Link, Milton; and Felicia Cannon, Milton; 26 grandchildren, Christopher Link, Dennis Link Jr., Maureen Gray, Erik and Gina Link; Alicia and Laurea Salvatore; Emily, Patrick and Brian Link; Sean, Megan and Christopher Fullmer; Hannah Link-Fitzgerald, Liam and Seth Esterly; Kyle, David, Ethan, Evan and Alyssa Link; Ryan, Kellen, Tara, Erin and Justin Cannon; and six great-grandchildren: Jessica and Christine Link; Meredith, Andrew, Annemarie and Aidan Gray.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon, Thursday, Sept. 28, at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, Lewes, where viewing begins at 10 a.m. Burial will be 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 29, at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery, 1600 Sproul Road, Springfield, Pa.

Elizabeth M. Valentine,
formerly of Rehoboth
Elizabeth Maury Valentine, 56, formerly of Richmond, Va. and Rehoboth Beach, died unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006 at her home in Live Oak, Fla.
She was the daughter of the late Granville Gray Valentine Jr. and Elizabeth Maury Valentine.
She is survived by her mother, Frances B. Valentine; brothers, Granville G. Valentine III and Thomas B. Valentine; a sister, Frances Valentine Massey; and eight nieces and nephews, all of Richmond. Betsy had a lifelong love of horses and was an avid rider.
Her offbeat sense of humor, wit and creativity will be missed by all.

Elizabeth A. Hopkins
retired from Campbell Soup
Elizabeth A. Hopkins, 74, of Millsboro, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at home.
Elizabeth retired from Campbell Soup. Mrs. Hopkins was a member of the Jehovahs Witness Church in Dagsboro. She enjoyed cooking, flowers, shopping, and traveling. She was a loving mother, grandmother sister and friend. She was one of Gods gifts to this world.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Wesley and Margaret Dennis Johnson; her husband, Alton Hopkins, who died in 1996; and her son, Eltan Dennis.
She is survived by her children, Sam Dennis and his wife, Carol of Millsboro, Kevin Dennis and his wife Alvanna of Millsboro, Deborah Cottman and her husband, Clifford of Suitland, Md., Casandra Dixon of Philadelphia, Pa., Michael Dennis and his wife, Alice of Salisbury, Md., Teresa Hopkins of Millsboro, Dana Hopkins and his wife Nina of Meadville, Pa. and Tony Hopkins of Millsboro; her brothers and sisters, Dawson Johnson, Wesley Johnson, Freddie Johnson, all of Philadelphia, Pa., Howard Dennis of Selbyville, Robert Johnson of Bishopville, Md., Alvaida Dennis, Lola Dennis, Esther Hunt, Catricia Johnson, and Stephanie Johnson, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; 51 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Henry Capuozzo,
retired executive
Henry Capuozzo, 82, of Rehoboth Beach, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
Mr. Capuozzo was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was the youngest and the last of 11 children. He had been employed as a corporate executive at International Insurance Adjustors in New York for many years, before moving to Delaware one year ago.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Capuozzo is survived by his partner, James C. O’Dell of Rehoboth Beach ; a sister-in-law Anne Capuozzo of Garfield, N.J., and several nieces and nephews.

Sarah Curry,

Sarah (Kilpatrick) Curry, 65, of Rehoboth Beach, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at her residence near Rehoboth Beach.
Mrs. Curry was born April 18, 1941, in Wilmington. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Curry had been a member of the Brandywine Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary for many years and was an honorary member of both the Claymont and Rehoboth Beach Fire Company Auxiliaries. She was a homemaker and enjoyed making crafts.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, David E. Curry; a daughter, Vicki Lynn Bradley of Rehoboth Beach; a son, David E. Curry Jr. and wife Tracey of Ediestone, Pa.; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Eileen Doyle and husband Ted and Mary Crow and husband Herb, all of Rehoboth Beach; and four grandchildren.        
A public visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., Wednesday Sept. 27, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. Interment will be private at Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro, DE.

James Clarence Hilyard Jr.,
plumber, pipefitter
James Clarence Hilyard Jr., 78 of Georgetown, died Thursday September 21, 2006, at the Seaford Center, Seaford.
Mr. Hilyard was a World War II Army veteran and also served as an Allied Guard at the Nuremburg War Crimes Trial. He had been a plumber and pipe fitter, and welder for the Local 690 pipe fighters Union.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Clarence Sr. and Mary Hilyard; a brother, Jack Hilyard; a son, Gerald Hilyard; and his sisters, Veronica, Margarite, Marion and Regina.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Deborah Ryan Hilyard; a son, James C. Hilyard III; and his sisters, Kathryn Bradley of Williamstown, N.J.; Ann Nancy Laird of Drexel Hill, Pa.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to the American Stroke Association, Southeastern PA Region, Memorial Processing Center 777 Penn Ct. Blvd. Pittsburgh, PA 15235-5927
Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Joseph Wayne Haney Jr., 37, of Ellendale died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, in his home.
He was born in Miami, Fla., son of Joseph Wayne and Carol S. (Jerman) Haney.
Mr. Haney was a handyman and worked until he had to retire on disability.
He is survived by his parents, Joseph Wayne and Carol S. (Jerman) Haney of Ellendale; his maternal grandfather, Walter Jerman of Georgetown; three sisters, Sue Ann Hollenbeck of North Carolina, Tina Craft of Lewes and Mary Moore of Florida; four brothers, Herbert McIntire and Tim McIntire, both of Ellendale, Allen McIntire of Seaford and Walter Lee McIntire of Bridgeville; an uncle, Jerry Lee Jerman of Georgetown; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

Bob was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Joseph T. and Elsie Moore, lived the majority of his life in Cranston Heights, upon retirement he moved to Lewes for 10 years, and had made Bear his home for the past year with his daughter Nora and her family.
Bob served his country proudly as a member of the US Army during The Korean Conflict. Bob was a talented auto mechanic and transmission specialist, working at various auto dealerships during his working years. Bob was a family man who loved and cared for his family and was especially close to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and their pet dogs Chloe and Chopper. Bob will be sadly missed by his daughters, Nora J. Collins and her husband Frank of Bear and Gwendolyn R. Moore and her fiancée Dean Robertson of Laurel, grandchildren Steven B. Loughren Jr. and his wife Alicia, Frank J. Drejka, Frank M. Collins, Jr. and Dana M. Collins; and great-grandchildren Steven B. Loughren, III and Ashlyn J. Loughren. Bob was preceded in death by his grandson Adam R. Collins in 1997, and his brothers Joseph T. Moore, Jr. and Willard A. Moore.
A Life Celebration was held at Beeson Funeral Home, Newark, with interment in Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington.

Charles Albert “Chuck” Smith, 75, of Crownsville, Md. and Millsboro, passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, after a nine-month battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 21, 1931 in Baltimore, Md., son of the late Charles and Cora Lee Trawick Smith.
He was a truck driver, retiring from Montgomery Ward in 1989. He worked at various trucking companies until finally retiring in 2003 from Storm Water Management.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathleen Alta Raap “Kas” Smith; five children, Thomas Carper “Sonny” of Ft. Myers, Fla., James Franklin “Jimmy” of Mobile, Ala., William Charles “Bill” Smith of Mobile, Ala., Patti Jean Brubaker-Norris of Mobile, Ala. and Alta Marie Smith of Crownsville, Md. and Millsboro; three grandchildren, Destiny Harris of Mobile, Ala., Nicholas Brubaker of Mobile and Minnie Alta Bella Smith of Millsboro; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Harris, Whitney Harris and Bradford Harris, all of Mobile.
A memorial service was held at Conley’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Angola.

Elaine Rhoades Holleufer, 76, died peacefully at home Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Quakertown, Pa., and resided in Lewes, where she grew up and then retired, after living in Rochester, N.Y., for nearly 20 years.
Elaine faced her passing days with power, energy, and purpose. These attributes were the foundations of her highly inspired, creative, and joyful approach to life. She applied her passion for living along the Delaware shore in all of her creative endeavors, which included painting, gardening, traveling, music, visiting galleries, dining, family gatherings, and especially anything involving the local seafood. As an artist, Elaine viewed the world for its beauty, color, texture, and patterns. She was known among her friends and family for her portraitures and still-life paintings. After attending Lewes High School, she was offered a scholarship to an art school because of her artistic talents. Elaine is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Donald Martin Holleufer, her parents, Mary and Arthur Rhoades; her brother Arthur Rhoades; and her nephew Donald Larby.
She is survived by her daughters, Donna Harman and her husband Thomas of Rochester, N.Y.; Robin LaMarti and her husband Ronald of Macedon, N.Y.; and Anita Marie Holleufer of Lewes, She is also survived by her brother, Ralph Rhoades and his wife Helma; her brother Charles Merz; and her sister Patricia Larby. She has nine surviving grandchildren; six nieces and five nephews. Elaine will be missed by her sweet kitties Marble and Buttons.
Friends are invited to in celebrate and honor Elaine’s life on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins and Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to services. The interment will be held for family only.

William Lewis Littleton, 62, of Lewes, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington.
Mr. Littleton was born in Lewes, Feb. 20, 1944. He had been employed by the Delaware Department of Transportation in the Traffic Division for more than 18 years, retiring on disability in 2000. Mr. Littleton was an artist who enjoyed oil painting, and he was also a freelance sign maker. He loved to play the guitar and the harmonica, and enjoyed singing. He also enjoyed taking scenic rides. Many years ago he had served with the Merchant Marines.
Mr. Littleton is survived by his beloved daughter, BillieLynn Littleton of Harrington; five sisters, Ann E. Carter and Sylvia Cash, both of Georgetown; Norma L. Lynch of Gumboro; Patricia M. Short and Barbara Yingling, both of Lewes; four brothers, Kenneth Littleton of Georgetown; Darrell Littleton of Milford; Charles Littleton of Harrington; and Robert Hitchens of Virginia; a granddaughter, Laura J. Littleton; a grandson, Michael J. Passwaters; a great-granddaughter, Kaylie Lynn Littleton; a very close neighbor, Julia Morris of Lewes; and a very close friend, Charlie Stuchlick of Georgetown.

Joseph W. Kling Jr.,
retired police officer
Joseph William Kling Jr., 85, of Lewes, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at his residence surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born Oct. 16, 1920 in Stamford, Ct., son of the late Joseph William Kling Sr. and Catherine Victoria Walls Kling.
Mr. Kling was a former police officer in Harrington and Federalsburg, Md. He also drove for Service Trucking in Federalsburg and for King Cole in Milton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II and the Korean War. He was devoted to his family; he was a wonderful and kind man. He was a sports enthusiast, an avid fisherman and hunter.   In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife of 38 years, Catherine W. Kling; and by his second wife of two years, Maxine Crouch Kling; his brother, Wesley L. Kling; and his sister Carol E. Golden.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years Buena M. Newcomb Kling; three daughters, Sara Ann Hubbard and husband Ralph of Hurlock, Md., Gladys Moran and her husband John of Lincoln, and Barbara “Peaches” McGee and her husband William of Milford; one son, Joseph William Kling III of Lincoln; seven grandchildren, William Barry Hubbard, Samantha Lynn Quailes, Shaun Allen Moran, Damien Lee Moran, Steven David Moran, Brittany Shay Moran and Michael William McGee; four great-grandchildren, Brittney C. Hubbard, Audrey L. Hubbard, Riley Alexis Quailes and Autumn Kay McGee; and his sister Genevieve L. Irwin of Detroit, Mich.

Patrick J. Taylor, 57, of Gloucester City, N.J. and formerly of Lewes, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006.
He was the devoted son of the late Linwood Taylor and Alice Taylor (nee Mitchell). He was the beloved brother of Bethany L. Ellis and her husband Michael J. Gloucester Heights and Faith A. Mazziotto of Bellmawr, N.J.; and dear uncle of six.
Patrick worked for Valmont Industries in Selbyville, as a welder and lived 20 years in Lewes.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Saint Mary’s R.C. Church, Gloucester City. Cremation will be private at the request of the family. Inurnment will be in New Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr.

Robert W. Insley,
retired from GM

Robert W. Insley, 70, of Dover, passed away Tuesday Sept. 19, 2006 at KGH Bay Health Dover.
He was born Sept. 20, 1935 in Wilmington, to the late William and Florence Elliott Insley.
Mr. Insley graduated in 1953 from William Penn High School. He was honorably discharge from the U.S. Army with the rank of sergeant. He was in the Army reserves from 1953 to 1961. He was a member of UAW Local 435 and retired with 30 years of dedicated service with General Motors on Boxwood Road, Wilmington. He also worked for Wal-Mart in Dover from 1996 until his death. He loved all kinds of animals especially his cats Felix and Sunkist.
He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret M. Insley in 1999.
He is survived by a son and his wife, Joseph and Lou Ann Insley of Smyrna; a son and his financee, Tracy Insley and Novella Butz of New Castle; a daughter, Bridget Insley of Lewes; eight grandchildren, and 17 great-grand children.
Remembrances services will be held Friday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m., at Trader Funeral Home in Dover. Burial will be at the Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington. Friends may call one hour before the time of the service at the Trader Funeral Home in Dover.

Michael ‘Mickey’ Borris

Michael “Mickey” Borris, 52 of Glen Mills, Pa., passed away surrounded by his loving family Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Borris was born in Wilmington, June 6, 1954, son of the late Julian Borris, and Annabelle Faraone Borris. He was most recently employed by the Delaware News Journal, working for its delivery service. Mickey loved everything about cars…fixing them, driving fast in them, and even making models of them. He, himself, was a rare make and model and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Borris is survived by his companion Donna Tucker and her son, Josh; brothers, Christopher of Lewes, Jamie of Bear, and Jeffrey of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sister, Julie Borris Bell of Leesburg, Va.; six nephews and one niece.
Funeral services will be held privately.

Elmer S. Stokes,
master carpenter

Elmer S. Stokes, 83, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at his home in Conley’s Chapel Village, after a long illness.
Mr. Stokes was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Ocean City, N.J. to John J. and Anna Schaffer Stokes, after which the family moved to Havertown, PA, where Mr. Stokes attended Manoa Elementary and Havertown Junior High Schools.
The family then relocated to Lewes at which time Mr. Stokes enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942. He received numerous citations and medals for his valorous combat service in the various Asiatic and Pacific Theaters of WWII, including Iwo Jima and Tarawa, as well as Good Conduct and Sharpshooter Medals. Following his honorable discharge from active duty in 1946, Staff Sgt. Stokes returned to the US but continued service to his country in the US Marine Corps Reserves until 1950, at which time he began his lifelong career as a master carpenter and commercial building contractor located in Dover.
He continued in his “retirement” as a consultant superintendent/estimator for several commercial contractors in Kent and Sussex Counties. Later he became a charter member in the Delaware Marine Corps League, Diamond State Detachment, where he served in the Color Guard until 2004. Throughout the years until age 80, he was an active member of the American Legion, VFW, Moose Club and Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks. He could usually be found in his workshop constructing some beautiful piece of furniture or cabinetry, WWII-era model ships and airplanes, or hand-painting his Marine Corps figurine flag holders for family and friends to enjoy. He also enjoyed attending harness races in Harrington and Dover, dog races while vacationing in Florida, and playing the slots anywhere.
Mr. Stokes was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Perpetua O’Brien Stokes.
He is survived by his sister, Virginia Beel of Lewes; five daughters, Alice Doeppe and her husband Jerry of Spotslvania, Va., Mitzi Allen of Belen, N.M., Priscilla Clark and her husband Robert of Lewes, Barbara Nielsen of Wilmington and Ingrid Stokes of Lewes; three sons, Christian Stokes and his wife Kasey of Dover, Buster Loud and his wife Diane of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Robert Loud and his wife Penny of Steuben, Maine; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and two nieces. He will be dearly missed by his devoted friend and housekeeper, Kathy McBride of Lewes, his favorite cat buddy “Slazenger” and loving cocker spaniel “granddaughter” Summer Clark.
A memorial service and inurnment will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery located at 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Catherine James-Elder,
retired nurse
Catherine O. James-Elder ended her struggle with cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006 at Lifecare at Loftland Park. 
Cathy was born May 29, 1948 in Milford to Flaudine Otwell and the late I. Richard Otwell. She graduated from Laurel High School in 1966, followed by LPN training in 1967.
Cathy had a life long commitment to the care of others and was employed at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for 36 years in the emergency room and the operating room. She also worked for Depuy Inc. for the last 6 years as a technical representative for all the Eastern Shore hospitals.
She was a past member of the Laurel Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Centenary Church. Her passions were shopping and classic cars. She was a member of the National Street Rod Association and loved to travel with her husband and family in her Street Rod.
Cathy is survived by her husband of  17 years, Kenneth J. Elder; her children, Todd E. James, Ruth M. James, Allery L. Elder, Ralph E. Elder and wife Jenny, Owen C. Elder, and Seth J. Elder and wife Ashley; her grandchildren, Heather, Ian, Haley, and Grant; her sisters, Bonnie Lundberg, Debbie Wilson; and her brothers and their wives, Ricky and Susan Otwell and Bill and Jan Otwell. 
She was admired, respected and well loved by many and she will be sorely missed.
Cathy lovingly donated her body to cancer research therefore, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Laurel Fire Hall located on 10th Street.

Nicholas J. Novello
retired truck driver
Mr. Nicholas J. “Nick” Novello, 69, of New Castle, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Novello was born in Wilmington on June 18, 1937, a son of the late Mildred and Frank Novello Sr. A career member of Teamsters Local Union 326, he was employed as a professional truck driver for Standard Distributors in Wilmington until his retirement. He was a gifted athlete throughout his life and played league softball for more than 50 years with several local teams.
Mr. Novello was a Lifetime Member of the Police & Fire Rod & Gun Club and the Terrace Athletic Club, both in New Castle. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and cards and watching horse racing.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Dorothy F. Barnes Novello; three children, Michele N. Tolmie and her husband, Mark, of Newark, Richard A. Novello and his wife, Vickie, of Townsend and Vincent E. Novello and his wife, Kim, of New Castle; two sisters, Marion Marando of New Castle and Josephine Crossan of Long Neck; a brother, Paul Novello of Wilmington; 10 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Ruth H. Graybeal,

Ruth H. Graybeal died on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, after a long illness with a Parkinson’s like disease.
She was born in Paoli, Pa., to Helen and Carl Harshbarger, but grew up in Hopewell, Va. Ruth graduated from Hopewell High School and was valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Madison College, now James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Va., with a bachelor’s degree in education. In college she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, a philanthropic sorority.
In 1950, she was married to C. Edward Graybeal, who was attending medical school at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. She then taught home economics in the Baltimore school system for two years while her husband finished medical school. The following year, she worked as a dietician at the former Delaware Hospital in Wilmington, while her husband was doing an internship there. After two years of military life with her husband serving as a medical officer in the Army, and four more years of surgical residency training in Wilmington, the couple moved to Milford in 1959.
Mrs. Graybeal was very active in the affairs of the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and in raising the couple’s four children.
She enjoyed having house parties, cooking, sewing, gardening, flying, golf and traveling. She was a member of Avenue United Methodist Church, although she had not been able to attend for many years.

In her younger years, with her husband being an avid pilot with his own airplane, she also became a licensed pilot. In recent years she became progressively more incapacitated by her disease. She was a member of the Milford Historical Society.

Mrs. Graybeal is preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling, a brother, Kenneth Carl Harshbarger of Long Pond, Pa. She is survived by her husband. Dr. C. Edward Graybeal, a retired surgeon; and four children - Dr. Glenn Graybeal of Milford, his wife, Susan, and their two daughters, Jennifer and Kelly; Dr. Michael Graybeal of Augusta, Ga., his wife, Sheila, and their three children, Nathan, Lesley and Daniel; Linda Callaway, R.N., of Milton, and her husband, Vaughn, and their three children, Matthew, Bryan and Stacey; and Dr. Casey Graybeal of Gainesville, Ga., and his wife, Susan, and their three children, Clayton, Marilyn and Austin.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford. Burial will be private.

Carol B. Blum, 61, of Millsboro, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at home.
Mrs. Blum was born in Lake Charles, La. to the late Robert and Buelah Manuel Broussard.
She was a housewife and lived for and loved her grandchildren. She was happiest when she was around her grandchildren. She was an avid reader, loved the out doors and enjoyed country dancing. Carol was a volunteer for the American Legion Post 28 of Millsboro and a member of the Legion Auxiliary Unit 28. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Blum.
She is survived by three daughters, Pamela Snyder, Denise Blum-Krough and Georgia Lane; and five grandchildren, Rachel, Emily, Shawn Michael, Morgan and Gabrielle.

Elizabeth D. Amick, 99, formerly of Bedford, Pa., died peacefully, Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, in Rochester, N.Y.
Elizabeth was employed by the Hartford Insurance Co. in Pittsburgh, Pa., before her marriage to James T. Amick in 1938. She retired in 1969 after 15 years of service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Elizabeth was a member of the Bedford Methodist Church for over 60 years; she was active in community activities and volunteer work and an avid bridge player. She maintained a summer home in Rehoboth Beach for more than 80 years.
She was equally at ease with the young, the old and her contemporaries and leaves many good friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Amick and son-in-law, William E. Siney.
She was the beloved mother of Suzanne Siney and Carolyn (Andrew) Portanova; and the loving grandmother of W. Todd Siney and Scott Siney of Redondo Beach, Calif.; She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Bedford Methodist Church, 132 E. John St. Bedford, Pa., 15522. William “Dusty” Long,
retired from SCI
William Walter “Dusty” Long, 67, of Harrington, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at home.
He was the son of William Clayton and Cecil Townsend Long. Mr. Long retired in 1996 from the Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, where he had worked for 37 years.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of VFW Post 6984 in Milton and American Legion Post in Oak Orchard. He was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church and helped with the youth there and he had coached Little League. He loved to fish and hunt, enjoyed collecting and reloading guns. He was very close to his granddaughters, Sophie Marie and Amanda, and to his closest friends, Bill and Joyce Handley and their son J.J. He taught J.J. how to hunt and was very proud of him.
He was also close to his goddaughter, Jen Brittingham and to Virginia Brittingham, who helped take care of him while he was so sick and was always there for him.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet Willey Long: his son, Dustey William Long; Carol A. Littleton of Long Neck, Billie Lynn Littleton of Harrington, Frances J. Hayden and her husband Robert Reed of Bridgeville, and Robert V. Hayden of Milford; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington, Street, Millsboro. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Delaware Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro. Pastor Rick Betts of Community Crossroads of Bridgeville, and Chaplain Larry Lilly of the Delaware Department of Corrections will officiate. The family request contributions to be made to Delaware Hospice Kent Division, 911 S. Dupont Highway, Dover, Delaware 19901.

Richard B. Mitchell Jr.,
gaslight retiree
Richard Benjamin Mitchell, Jr., 79, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at Harrison Senior Living in Georgetown. He was born Feb. 6, 1927 in Altoona, Ala., son of the late Richard Benjamin Mitchell Sr. and Minnie Belle “Love” Mitchell. 
Mr. Mitchell had a long career as a coordinator with the Washington Gaslight Company in Washington, DC. He also served on the Civil Aeronautics Board for two years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served under General Eisenhower.
He is survived by his brother, Alfred Mitchell of Gadsen, Ala.; his sister Patricia Mitchell of Bethesda, Md. and Rehoboth Beach; and several nieces and nephews. All services are private.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Children International, 2000 East Red Bridge Road, P.O. Box 219055, Kansas City, MO 64121.
