George H. McElveen,
outdoorsman
George H. McElveen, 86, of Georgetown died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.
He was predeceased by his parents, George W. and Pearl Stokes McElveen.
He is survived by his wife, Frances M. McElveen; his children, Terry McElveen of Bowie, Md., Robert and Debbie McElveen of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Mirian Guerra and her husband Joseph of Millsboro; a brother, Oland Davis McElveen of Georgetown; and grandchildren Tara McElveen of Glendale, Md., George and Rachel McElveen of Islamorada Fla., Janet Guerra of New York, N.Y., and Michell Esposito and her husband Wayne of Milton.
McElveen was a retired supervisor for the Washington Terminal Co. in Washington, D.C. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising beagles. He loved field trials with his dogs.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Patriots Way, Millsboro. Interment will follow. Arrangements by Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.

Henry L. Phillips,
policeman, firefighter
Henry L. Phillips, 89, of Millsboro, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. Henry led an astonishing life of public service, having retired as a police officer in 1976, and also retired from serving as a mail courier for the state of Delaware. He was employed as a funeral director’s assistant at Watson Funeral Home since 1976. He served for more than 50 years in the fire service at both the Gumboro and Millsboro fire departments.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. In his very distinguished career, Henry served as a director of the State Fire School, held numerous offices in the fire company and was a charter member of the Delaware State Fire Police Association, where he served as a past state president.
During his police career, he was renowned in Millsboro and retired at the rank of lieutenant in 1976. He served for 30 years in the VFW Ambulance Service. He held the ranks of captain, lieutenant colonel and colonel in the fire police. In 1983 he was appointed to the Delaware State Firefighters Hall of Fame and was also chosen as fire policeman of the year. He attended Zoar United Methodist Church.
Born in Gumboro, he was the son of the late Lawrence K. and Camille Long Phillips.
Henry is survived by his son Robert W. Phillips and his wife Jean, of Millsboro; two grandchildren, Aaron Phillips and Jennifer Lindenburger, and four great-grandchildren, Blake and Trent Lindenburger and Andy and Ali Phillips. He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Iris Eskridge, and his best friend Jim Loomis.
He was preceded in death by a son, Henry L. Jr., his brothers, Kenny and Reese, and a sister, Alice. He was also preceded by his special friend and companion, Jeanette Peters.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31, for a viewing, and again from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1, with police, fire police and fire department honor guards.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Viewing and funeral will be at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro.
During the funeral service, Henry Phillips will be posthumously promoted to the rank of brigadier general by the Sussex County Fire Police Association, the first time this honor has ever been granted.
Interment with full honors will be held at Millsboro Cemetery following the funeral.

Lester S. Moore,
avid gardener
Lester S. Moore, 95, of Harrington died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Moore was born in Lewes, son of the late Joseph and Mary Jane Moore.
Mr. Moore started with the Bond Bread General Baking Co. in 1931. He started out as a salesman with a delivery route. He was a no-nonsense salesman, and others looked up to him by the example that he set. Mr. Moore soon became a foreman and was considered one of the best foremen that Bond Bread ever had. He left Bond Bread in January 1970.
He went to work for Clements Supply and Hardware Co. for the next six years. After that, he went to work for Felton Hardware, part time, in February 1977, until he retired in December 1990. At whatever job he worked, Mr. Moore gave 110 percent because he loved what he did, and he loved to work.
In his spare time, Mr. Moore enjoyed gardening and had a garden every year until the ripe age of 91. He took great pride in his garden, and he loved sharing his produce. Mr. Moore also liked to rabbit hunt and shared the rabbits with family and friends. A great passion and talent of his was woodworking. He was gifted with the ability to craft things out of wood and repair anything. He shared his talents with a grandson, who later turned that craft into his livelihood.
Mr. Moore will be remembered as a person of great integrity and honesty. He taught his family and co-workers these traits by his work ethic and how he treated others. He taught his children the proper way to live their lives and how to manage their time and budgets. Most of all, he was a great provider and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert I. Moore.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Madalene Moore; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Ruth and Bob L. Herring of Locust Grove, Va., and Elizabeth and Everett Kennedy of Sudlersville, Md.; a brother, Clifford Moore of Milford; a sister, Margaret Moore of Rehoboth Beach; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Highway, Harrington, where friends may call one hour earlier. Interment will be in Milton Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Dorothy P. Thomas,
worked in health field
Dorothy P. Thomas, 93, of Milford and formerly of Milton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007 at Milford Center/Genesis Elder Care in Milford.
Dorothy was born in Milton, daughter of the late Clarence A. and Lillie P. Gray Dickerson.
She had been a bus driver with Easter Seals for many years, worked with Delaware Adol-escent Center in Georgetown and was a dietician with Beebe Medical Center.
She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Milford; the AARP in Milford; Milford Senior Center, where she taught ceramics; and a former member of the Milton Senior Citizens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas; a stepson, Norman Thomas; and two brothers, Tyler G. Dickerson and Alfred C. Dickerson.
She is survived by two sisters, Thelma L. Stogner of Milford and Helen D. Clendaniel of Milton; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Marian Brewington, and her children Debbie Davis, Shirley Walls and Rick Sharp.
Services will be at noon, Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

Helen I. Turner,
retired from post office
Helen I. Turner, 89, of Dagsboro, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, Md., after a long illness.
Mrs. Turner was born and raised in Dagsboro, the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Marydel W. West. She graduated from Frankford High School. She retired as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service after 26 years in Dagsboro.
Helen was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She enjoyed senior luncheons, sending cards, phone chats and thinking and giving to others.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Oliver B. Turner in 1978. She is survived by a niece and several cousins.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday Jan. 30, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher St., Frankford. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday. Interment will be at Dagsboro Redmens Memorial Cemetery in Dagsboro. Paula F. Grossi,
graphic artist
Paula F. Grossi, 45, of Rehoboth Beach, tragically passed away on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007.
Ms. Grossi was born in Wilmington on March 29, 1961. A graphic artist, she had most recently been employed by Xerox. Paula was a champion of AIDS awareness and research, serving as captain of the Jeffrey Grossi Memorial Team for the Annual AIDS Walk since 1995. She also served as treasurer of the Stable Farm Home Association. Above all, Paula was a loving and devoted mother who cherished her children dearly.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gary A. Grossi and Jeffrey M. Grossi; paternal grandparents, Rocco and Julia Grossi; and maternal grandfather, Cecil H. Gregg.
She is survived by her parents, Francis J. Grossi, and his fiancée, Okham, and mother, Yvonne (Gregg) Nass; a son, Rocco Grossi of Rehoboth; daughter, Trishia N. Grossi, of Rehoboth; grandson, Anthony Michael Grossi, of Rehoboth; grandmother, Sara M. Gregg; and a host of extended family.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Charles P. Arcaro Funeral Home, 2309 Lancaster Ave., opposite Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington. Entombment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home, prior to service.

James Patrick Sullivan,
oceanographer
James Patrick Sullivan, 79, of Ocean View, and formerly of Seabrook, Md., passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare in Lewes.
Mr. Sullivan was born on March 16, 1927, in Cumberland, Md., son of the late Patrick J. and Leota (Beal) Sullivan. James was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. He was a naval oceanographer for the U.S. government. James traveled throughout Europe and South America and went to Russia as part of a scientific exchange. He also loved fishing and tending to his vegetable gardens and his rose bushes.
Mr. Sullivan was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, a member of the Mason Dixon Post 7234 in Ocean View and the American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Antoinette (Laukaitis) Sullivan; two children Kathleen Sullivan of Gambrills, Md., and James M. Sullivan and wife Stacey of Odenton, Md.; five grandchildren, Shannon Coven, Kristina Lynch, Kathleen Quinn, Jason Baines and David John “D.J.” Baines; two great grandchildren Dominik Lynch and Adrianna Lynch; two sisters Jo Ann Strock of Ellicott City, Md. and Patricia Rowland of Louisville, Ky. and many nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Thursday Feb. 1, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach where friends and family may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, West Avenue, Ocean View. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.

Elizabeth L. Gallant,

Elizabeth L. (Boss) Gallant, 94, of Glenelg, Md., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Mrs. Gallant was born in East Hampton, Mass., daughter of the late Joseph and Louisa (Picard) Boss.
Mrs. Gallant moved to the Lewes area in 1977. She was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church and Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge. She enjoyed reading, baking and playing the slots.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil T. Gallant, in 1986. She is survived by her son, Donald E. Jarvis and his wife Carol of Glenelg; a granddaughter, Janna L. Garcia and her husband Juan Carlos of Maspeth, N.Y.; a greatgrandchild, Giovanni Garcia; and a sister, Eunice Callan of Worcester, Mass.
All services are private.

John A. Anstey
decorated veteran
John A. “Jack” Anstey, 87, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at the Heartland Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.
Jack was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in active duty from 1941 through 1945 as a forward observer tank driver through Normandy, southern France, Ardennes and central Europe with the Third Army, Fourth Armored Division under Gen. George Patton. He was decorated with the American Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal for Good Conduct, Distinguished Unit Badge and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Service Stars. He was active in the Fourth Armored Division Association 66th Armored Field Artillery Battalion and cherished his fellows in arms throughout his life. Jack was a real estate agent for many years in Delaware County, Pa., and became an independent real estate appraiser for numerous banks and mortgage companies throughout Delaware. He retired as a real estate appraiser for the Delaware Department of Highways in 1983. In his retirement, Jack enjoyed spending time with his family, keeping in contact with his military buddies, model trains and walking at the Delcastle Recreation Center.
Jack was the son of the late Agnes and Richard Anstey of Sharon Hill, Pa.
He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Duvak) Anstey, of Glenolden, Pa., whom he married in 1948.
Jack is survived by his daughters, Lea V. Peter and her husband, J. Frank Peter and Jacki Aff, all of Wilmington; and his grandsons, Kevin Beam and his wife, Aimee Fleuette-Beam of Milton and Dan Peter and his girlfriend, Angela Segree of Wilmington.Continued from page 18

Alfred S. Tunnell Sr.,
fishing boat captain
Alfred S. “Big Al” “Captain Al” Tunnell Sr., 83, of Millsboro departed this life Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, in his home.
He was born Dec. 9, 1923, to the late George and Alberta Tunnell in Belltown.
This is where he grew to adulthood. He met his future life’s companion, the late Deanner Lee Vann, in Belltown. On Aug. 4, 1946, they wed. This union lasted for more than 55 years, until her death Feb. 26, 2002.
He and his wife spent many years as members of Mount Sinai Holy Churches of America under the leadership of the late Elder Jacob Brittingham and the late Elder John Nichols. He recently rededicated his life to Christ after being ministered to by several family members.
Alfred had a love for the water. He would spend countless hours on his boat fishing. He was a man of many talents, including building his own boat, weaving his fishing nets, farming his land, becoming a small business owner and the list goes on. One of his proudest accomplishments was earning his commercial fishing license on his first attempt.
His outgoing personality led him to befriend and converse with any and everyone. Alfred knew no strangers. He could spend hours talking to people. He showed us that a person’s skin color should never be an issue in developing friendship. This philosophy carried him to his final journey.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two grandsons, Larry R. Glass Jr. and Lee Robert Glass; and a great-granddaughter, Monica Tunnell.
He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy his six children, Clarice Boyer of Millsboro, Linda Glass of Atlanta, George Tunnell of Lewes, Alfred Tunnell Jr. of Dover, Hezekiah Holmes of Wilmington and Wynell Prescott of Elkins Park, Pa.; two daughters-in-law, Karen Tunnell of Lewes and Dorothy Tunnell of Dover; two sons-in-law; Larry Glass of Atlanta and Dwayne Boyer of Millsboro; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Services were held in the New Holy Trinity Church of God In Christ, Millsboro, with burial in People’s Memorial Cemetery, Lewes.

Emily A. (Frazier) Reddish of Lewes, 88, formerly of Baltimore, Md., beloved wife of the late Wendell B. Reddish Sr., died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, in the Milford Center Nursing Home.
Emily is survived by two sons, Wendell B. Reddish Jr. and Wayne E. Reddish; six grandchildren, Kimberly Dages, Christine Mullin, Brian Reddish, Debbie Rivenburg, Craig Reddish and Kimberly Bernabe; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at noon Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, West Avenue, Ocean View.

Michaele J. Barnes,
active in Cape district
Michael J. Barnes, 64, of Lewes, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at Bayhealth/Kent General Hospital, Dover, from complications of lupus.
She was born in Wilmington Dec. 6, 1942, to the late William Stanley Patterson and Carole Lea White.
Michaele served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army as a young woman. She was an active member of the Cape Henlopen School District PTA and served as its president at various times throughout her son’s attendance.
During the last decade of her life, despite her immense physical suffering, she tirelessly dedicated her time and resources to the National Lupus Foundation and to the Northport/Crisis House operation in Georgetown.
She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Robert Brown Barnes; her son, Matthew Jensen Barnes, who recently married Cara A. Dustman; and numerous extended family members.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Crossroads Community Church, Route 13, Bridgeville. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton.
Michael’s greatest ambition in life was to be a good mother and she was considered Mom to many - young and old alike. Her unconditional love will be sorely missed.

Abner Konick,
retired manufacturer
Abner Konick, 89, formerly of 120 Rodney Ave., Lewes, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, in West Palm Beach, Fla., after a brief illness.
He was a retired ladies garment manufacturer in Philadelphia, Pa. and Lewes, from 1949 until 1969 and a sport fishing captain on the “Capri” out of Lewes, and later Palm Beach after moving to Florida in 1969.
He was the son of Joseph Konick, a Russian immigrant who came to the United States in 1907 from Novgorod, Russia, and Josephine Barcus Konick, a native of Philadelphia.
He was born in Philadelphia on May 31, 1917, and was a 1934 graduate of Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
He was founder and president of Sport Kraft Manufacturing Co., 419 West 3rd St. in Lewes, one of the town’s largest employers in the 1950s and 1960s; a past president of the Rotary International Club of Lewes; and a third-degree Mason.
His wife of 43 years, Mary Konick, predeceased him in 1982.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynn, of Santa Fe, N.M.; a son, Howard, of County Galway, Ireland, and a son, David, of Rappahannock County, Va.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Royal Poinciana Park in Palm Beach, Fla., Saturday, Jan. 20, following which his ashes were buried at sea off Palm Beach.

Lois J. (Helsel) Strayer,
Beebe volunteer
Lois J. (Helsel) Strayer died on Saturday, Jan, 13, 2007 at her home with daughter Linda and granddaughter Jessie at her side. She was 78 years old.
The youngest of 11 children, Lois was nicknamed “Babe” from the moment she was born in Johnstown, Pa. on Aug. 17, 1928. She met Homer C. Strayer and the two married in May 1947. She gave birth to four daughters before moving to Newark, in 1964.
Lois served as corporate personnel manager for W.L. Gore and Associates from 1965 to 1978. She later worked as the office manager for West Bay Park in Lewes. She volunteer 4ed with the Ladies Auxiliary at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Among her many passions were reading, music, movies, puzzles, boating and writing letters. She greatly enjoyed traveling and spending time with family at Shawnee State Park in Schellsburg, Pa., as well as the Delaware beaches and Naples, Fla., where she traveled annually with her husband.
Although she faced hardship in later years, she took great joy in life’s simple pleasures during her final summer. She spent a good amount of time sitting comfortably on her porch, iced tea in hand, playing cards and watching birds visit the feeders. She never lost her love of a good story and laughed until her final day.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Homer in 1996 and in 2003 by daughter Sharlan G. (Strayer) Clancy. She is survived by daughters Cynthia J. Strayer and Connie L. Strayer, both of Newark. She is also survived by son-in-law William J. Clancy III; grandchildren Andrew Clancy, Sean Colmery, Doug Colmery and Kelly Clancy; and brother-in-law Dean Strayer and sister-in-law Sandy Strayer of Newark.
Private graveside services were held at All Saints’ Cemetery, Angola, with the Rev. Jack Cohen officiating.

Joseph Schedivy,
button designer
Joseph Schedivy of Milford died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, in his home. He was 88.
Mr. Schedivy was born June 19, 1918, in Little Ferry, N.J., son of the late Joseph R. and Frieda (Faul) Schedivy.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II with the 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion of the 4th Armored Division attached to the 3rd Army.
Mr. Schedivy was a button designer by trade in the business he operated with his father, Joseph Schedivy & Son, in Little Ferry. After several years in operation, they sold the business to Empire Button in Union City where Mr. Schedivy remained on in the same capacity. He later accepted a position in maintenance and as a fireman with the River Dell School District for five years after which he was employed as an onsite manager for the Allendale Industrial Park for three years.
He worked a total of 44 years before retiring in 1986 and moving with his wife to Delaware.
Mr. Schedivy was an avid gardener, loved fishing and birds and especially enjoyed helping people.
He was a member of the Milford Senior Center, the AARP and the First Presbyterian Church in Milford where he had served as a deacon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Maldonado and a brother, Raymond Schedivy.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Ann Schedivy; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Lee and Robert Bradford of Lewes; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles R. and Elizabeth Schedivy of Waretown, N.J.; two grandchildren, Kristina Lee Sterni and Caroline Betty Schneck; four great-grandchildren, Larysa Sterni, Jeffrey Sterni, Jennifer Thompson and Ashley Sterni; and two great-great-grandchildren.

John A. ‘Jack’ Anstey,
decorated veteran
John A. “Jack” Anstey of Wilmington died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, in Heartland Hospice House surrounded by his loving family. He was 87.
Mr. Anstey was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in active duty from 1941 through 1945 as a forward observer tank driver through Normandy, southern France, Ardennes and central Europe with the Third Army, Fourth Armored Division under Gen. George Patton.
He was decorated with the American Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal for Good Conduct, Distinguished Unit Badge and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Service Stars. He was active in the Fourth Armored Division Association 66th Armored Field Artillery Battalion and cherished his fellows in arms throughout his life.
Mr. Anstey was a real estate agent for many years in Delaware County, Pa., and became an independent real estate appraiser for numerous banks and mortgage companies throughout Delaware. He retired as a real estate appraiser for the Delaware Department of Highways in 1983. In his retirement, he enjoyed model trains, spending time with his family, keeping in contact with his military buddies, and walking at the Delcastle Recreation Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Richard Anstey; his wife, Helen (Duvak) Anstey, whom he married in 1948; a sister, Hannah Bosacco; and two brothers, George Anstey and Richard Anstey.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Lea V. and J. Frank Peter and Jacki Aff, all of Wilmington; his grandsons and their spouses, Kevin and Aimee Fleuette-Beam of Milton and Dan Peter and his girlfriend, Angela Segree of Wilmington.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Shipley and Weldin Roads, Wilmington.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. in the church.
Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery.

Margaret Smith,

Margaret M. “Peg” Smith, 95, of Lewes, passed away at Lewes Convalescent Center, after a brief illness.
She was a homemaker and mother to five boys. Margaret was born in Ridley Township, Pa., and grew up in the Prospect Park, Pa. area. She spent most of her married life in Springfield, Pa. before retiring to Brigantine N.J. She later lived in Mount Laurel N.J., and most recently lived in Lewes. She was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Lewes. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and knitting. Even in her last years, she knitted newborn outfits and other items as a member of the Retired Service Volunteer Program (RSVP) as well as for family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Smith, who died in 1973, and her son Bart Smith, who died in 1990.
She is survived by four sons, Thomas Smith and his wife Suzanne of Arizona, Jack Smith and his wife Fran of Lewes, Bob Smith and his partner Mike Warren of Lewes, and Joseph Smith and his wife Truus of Downingtown, Pa., and her daughter-in-law, Rita Smith, of Mount Laurel, N.J. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday morning in Springfield, Pa.

Harry F. Crystal,
World War II veteran
Harry F. Crystal, 84, of Millsboro, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007.
Mr. Crystal was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on April 20, 1922, son of the late Joseph and Sadie (Bigler) Crystal. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served our country during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Colahan DD-658. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Mr. Crystal is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mildred A. (Hutchison) Crystal; his son: Harry W. Crystal & wife Bette (Valente) Crystal of Millsboro; his grandson Harry K. Crystal and wife Julie Stark, of Granite Falls, Wash.; his granddaughter Kimberly Crystal Agnetti and husband Thomas, of Palmyra, Pa.; and his great-grandchildren: Baylee Crystal Agnetti, Thomas Joseph Agnetti, Samantha Lee Agnetti, Matier Grace Stark, and Harry Jacob Crystal. He is also survived by a sister, Lillian (Crystal) Bove, and a brother Walter Crystal.
Chapel services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 26, at Delaware Veterans Cemetery North, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, where interment will follow.

Harry David Wright, 58, of Delmar, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007.
Mr. Wright was the son of the late Walter and Ruth Wright.
Harry was a member of the American Legion Post 28, Oak Orchard/Riverdale. He loved to play pool and work on cars.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda L. Wright; his children, Sean Wright and wife Christie of Dallas, Ga.; Morgan Wright, Ashley Wright, Barbara Wright all of New Castle, Dennis Tripp of Fountain, Colo., Kyle Tripp of Tennessee, Crystal Tripp of Millsboro, Faith Tripp of Georgetown; a sister, Nancy Bilheimer of Levittown, Pa.; and a grandchild; Aubrey Wright.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 26, at Watson Funeral Home 211 Washington St. Millsboro, with interment private.

Viola G. Reed Cavender, 88, of Millsboro, formerly of Lewes, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Green Valley Terrace Nursing Home in Millsboro.
She was born Dec. 19, 1918 in Delaware.
Viola enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and playing shuffleboard.
Mrs. Cavender is survived by her son, Philip C. Kilpatrick of Port Orange, Fla,; two grandchildren, Michele N. Alexander and her husband Corey of Dover, and Philip C. Kilpatrick Jr. of Port Orange; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Kaity, and Cavan Alexander.
She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Carole Kilpatrick, formerly of Port Orange.

Mary Ann Roach,

Mary Ann Roach, 73, of Georgetown, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at home.
Mary Ann was born in Seaford, daughter of the late Preston and Nellie Phillips Fleetwood. She was a secretary for the Indian River School District for 26 years, retiring in 1983.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who dearly enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mary Ann enjoyed reading, gardening and going to the beach. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Georgetown and served as treasurer for many years as well as nursery coordinator for 30 years. Mary Ann was also a member of the Georgetown Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Gene F. Roach; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael G. and Beverly Roach of Staunton, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie R. and Brendan Warner of Dagsboro; six grandchildren, Nicole, Teresa and Emily Roach and Ryan, Colin and Erin Warner; two brothers, George Fleetwood and his wife Jane, and Frank Fleetwood and wife Pat, all of Seaford; a sister-in-law, Ann Fleetwood; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, Jan. 27, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after 10 a.m.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

Grace Lafferty,
former owner of Corners Inn
Grace Ritter Lafferty, 73, of Lewes, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center. Mrs. Lafferty was born June 24, 1933, in Lewes, daughter of the late Lewes Police Department Chief Lynn Ritter and the late Amelia (Rogers) Ritter.
Mrs. Lafferty was a 1951 graduate of Lewes High School and a 1953 graduate of Goldey-Beacom College. She worked for the City of Wilmington in the water department and with the state of Delaware Mosquito Control Division in Lewes. She was also employed at Fort Miles military base at Cape Henlopen in the latter part of 1950.
Mrs. Lafferty was married to the late Captain Mervyn “Buzz” Lafferty, Jr. (1984), a Delaware River and Bay pilot. She and her husband owned and operated the Corners Inn in the 1970s at Westcoats Corner in Lewes. She was a member of Lewes Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Lafferty spent many winters in the Ft. Myers and Naples area on the west coast of Florida.
Mrs. Lafferty is survived by her son, John M. Lafferty of Lewes; two daughters, Linette Greener and her husband Lance of Milton and Lacey Lafferty of Lewes; two granddaughters, Casey Greener and Lacey Lynn Lafferty; one grandson, Lance Greener; and one great-granddaughter, Ella Madeline Hoefler.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway in Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Pastor Gary Hayden will be officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel Methodist Cemetery on Savannah Road in Lewes.

James T. Chandler III,

James T. “Duke” Chandler III, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007 surrounded by his family.
He lived an exemplary life of selfless service to his family, friends and community and was an inspiration to all who knew him. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, music and the arts. Jimmie was a native Wilmingtonian.
He was proud of playing basketball for the AJAX that won the Del. State Championship in 1942. That same year, he graduated from P.S. Dupont High School. He attended Duke University where he played football and is past president of the Duke Alumni Assoc. of Wilmington. He also attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Jimmie was past president of the Wilmington Jaycees and was voted Young Man of the Year in 1957. He was active in his church, The Cathedral Church of St. John, where he served on the vestry. He was a member of the Wilmington Country Club, Lewes Yacht Club and Seaview Country Club.
Jimmie began working in the family business at a young age with his father and grandfather. He served numerous families in their time of need during his fifty years in funeral service. Under his leadership, the funeral home grew and expanded to include the suburbs. He was appointed by Gov. Terry to the Delaware State Board of Funeral Service in 1967. When he retired, Jimmie was the chairman of the board and president of Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory. He spent his retirement years fishing and relaxing with his family in Lewes, Del.
Jimmie is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sally Heinzeroth Chandler; four sons, James T. Chandler IV and his wife Mary Jo, Bruce C. Chandler, Denis L. Chandler, Chad H. Chandler and his wife Diane; one sister, April Mapes of Chagrin Falls, Oh.; and two brothers, Marvel Heinsohn of Denver, Colo. and Jay T. Chandler of Centreville, Del. He was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren, Shannon, Melissa, Corey, Amanda, Drake, Bonnie, Anna, Tom, Kristen, Catheryn, Kelsey, Sara, Sarah and Alex and four great-grandchildren, Chandler, Theodore, Audrey, and Edwin.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. at the Cathedral Church of St. John, 10 Concord Avenue, Wilmington on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007. Burial will be private.

Hazel J. Steele,
longtime waitress
Hazel J. Steele, 80, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at her Milton home. Mrs. Steele was born in Selbyville, Del., the daughter of the late Thomas and Hallie (Lynch) Gray.
She worked as a waitress for the Avenue Restaurant in Rehoboth for many years. She was a member of White’s Chapel U.M. Church and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, puzzles, and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph T. Steele.
She is survived by three sons, Charles Townsend and his wife Judi of Newark, Del., Thomas Townsend and his wife Galena of Parker, Colo., and Michael Townsend and his wife Margo of Roxana; four daughters, Patricia MeGee and her husband Wayne, and Mary Jane Wharton and her husband Darryl, all of Roxana, Estelle Murray and her husband Tony, and Sandra Edwards and her husband David, all of Milton; and one step-daughter, Judith Webb and her husband Fletcher of Ellendale. Also surviving Mrs. Steele are 16 grandchildren, Ronnie, Michael, Eddie, Eric, Brian, Brett, and Brandon Townsend; Tracey Townsend; Crystal Lynch; Meghan Wharton; Roxanne and Thomas Murray; Cailyn Edwards; Keith and Jeff Webb; and Judy Reed; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call one hour earlier. Interment will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.
