Frances H. Wiley,
former Lions Club member
Frances H. Wiley, 93, of Millsboro, formerly of Aston, Pa., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, in her home.
Frances was born in Concord, Pa., daughter of the late Clarence and Orpha Walters Husbands.
She was a homemaker.
While residing in Aston, Frances was an active member of the Mount Hope U.M. Church and a Lioness with the Aston Lions Club. She moved to Millsboro about seven years ago.
In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Wiley, and two sons, Barry Wiley and Gene Wiley.
She is survived by two sons, Frank Wiley, with whom she lived in Millsboro, and Walter Wiley of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services at Mount Hope U.M. Church in Aston will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Mount Hope U.M. Church, 4020 Concord Road, Aston, PA 19014.

Joseph E. Keate,
traveled extensively
Joseph E. Keate, 79, of Rehoboth Beach and The Villages, Fla., passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, in Florida. He was born July 9, 1928, in Los Angeles, Calif., son of the late Joseph and Janet Keate.
Mr. Keate retired from the Montgomery County, Md., Department of Transportation and moved to Rehoboth Beach in 1983. He worked for Coldwell Banker Rehoboth Resort Realty and Anderson Stokes. He then traveled extensively and became a Florida sun bird.
He was active in St. Edmond’s parish as a eucharistic minister, a member of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He overcame many medical problems with a cheerful heart and now has earned his well-deserved rest.
Mr. Keate was the beloved husband of Barbara Keate and the brother of Mae Miles of Solvana, Calif. Joe loved being a part of Barbara’s large family - her eight children, their spouses and nineteen grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 31, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, King Charles Avenue and Laurel Street, Rehoboth Beach. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to Mass. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.

Theodore E. Willing Sr.,

Theodore Elwood Willing Sr., 72, of Greenwood, formerly of Salisbury, Md., passed from this life Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.
He was born in Salisbury on Dec. 11, 1934, son of the late Raymond Willing and Elizabeth Ruggiero.
Mr. Willing worked at various jobs, including poultry producer, welder, mechanic, carpenter, heavy equipment operator and repairing railroad cars in Texas. He became disabled in 1992.
He enjoyed working on small motors, fishing and in his younger days, riding motorcycles.
Mr. Willing was a member of Old Paths Church of Christ in Georgetown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph J. Willing; and a sister, Roselene King.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Theodore Willing Jr. of Eden, Md., Preston and Jennie Willing of Mardela, Md., James and Kathy Willing of Bedford, Pa., Paul and Ylonda Willing of Hebron, Md., and Daisey Myers of Selbyville; four brothers and their spouses, Leon and Doris Willing of Bridgeville, James S. and Lora Jean Willing of Salisbury, Charles and Ruth Ruggiero of Lewes, and Lennie Ruggiero of Ellendale; two sisters, Vivian Szabo of Virginia, and Teresa Myers of Ellendale; 10 grandchildren, Preston Jr., Brian, Andrea, Paul, Christopher, A.J., Rebecca, Raymond “Buck,” Jason and Bradley; his great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at noon, Friday, Aug. 31, in Old Paths Church of Christ, 18295 Redden Road, Georgetown, where family and friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be held at the adjoining cemetery.

Joseph Garber, 85, of Rehoboth Beach and formerly of Wilmington, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007.
A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was an entrepreneur.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy Yaakovian; his grandsons, Matthew and Michael Yaakovian; his great-grandchildren, Ethan and Natalie; his sister, Claire Cohen of Wilmington; and his companion, Florence Levy.
Graveside services were held at the Jewish Community Cemetery, Wilmington.

Amedeo “Mickey” E. DeBastiani, 85, of Milton, formerly of Ligonier, Pa., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, at his home. Mr. DeBastiani was born in Renton, Pa., Jan.15, 1922, son of the late Giacomo and Antoinette Pinazza DeBastiani. Mickey was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy and Merchant Marines.
Mr. DeBastiani retired after 34 years of service at United States Steel in Pittsburgh, Pa. Mickey enjoyed photography, gardening, fishing, reading and music. He was also a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church choir in Georgetown, the choir at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ligonier and the choir at the Georgetown CHEER Center. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, Gino DeBastiani, Gilda Potter, Thelma Rice, Elsie Dabin and Bruno DeBastiani. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Asunta “Sue” Nuzzo DeBastiani; a son, James DeBastiani and his wife Barbara of Georgetown; two daughters, Louise DeBastiani of Milton, and Bobbie DeBastiani of Lewes; four grandchildren, Annette, Mary Beth, Antonia and Tessa DeBastiani; and two sisters, Emma Pavlick of New Kensington, Pa., and Erma Grajcar of Prince Frederick, Md. A memorial mass was held Wednesday, Aug. 29, in Georgetown, with in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. Ruth G. Peck, 81, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Martin Nursing and Restorative Care Center in Stuart, Fla.
Born in Providence, R.I., she had resided in Jensen Beach, Fla., since 1982, coming from Millsboro.
Prior to retirement she was a tax accountant for H.B. Mitchell & Son in Millsboro for over 20 years.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro before moving to Florida.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Alice Peck of Fort Worth, Texas. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Jack and Zoe.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Harold A. and Gladys I. Gardner; and one brother.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.

Kathy J. Goff LeCates, 57, of Millsboro, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at home.
Kathy was born on Sept. 29, 1949, in Fremont, N.C., to the late Willie E. and Agnes M. Bass Goff.
Kathy had just started working at Jeff’s Greenhouses in Bethel as a floral designer; she was a designer all her life going back to working with her parents in their florist shop years ago. In addition to being an excellent floral designer she loved to read and make jewelry, and she loved her grandchildren.
Kathy is survived by two daughters, Danika Swan of Wilmington, and Montera L. Dorsey of Millsboro; two brothers, Willie E. Goff Jr. of Greenwood, and John K. Goff of Millsboro; two sisters, Cheryl Ellwanger and Beverly West, both of Millsboro; and eight grandchildren, Adrian, Olivia, Quinn, Jozias, Juliana, Jacob, Jeradus and Samuel.
Services will be private and at the discretion of the family.

Paul E."Gene" Barker, 75, of Georgetown, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington. He served in the U.S. Army where his specialty was boxing. Gene retired in 1994 after serving 40 years as an Indian River School District custodian. He loved horse racing, fishing and traveling. In addition to his parents, Gene was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lee Barker, in 1993; his sister, Joann Edwards; and a stepson, David McDaniels. He is survived by his stepdaughter, Nancy J. Ireland of Dover; a stepson, Bobby McDaniels of Smyrna; his sister, Patty McClelland of Rutland, Ohio; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 N. Bedford Street, Georgetown, at noon, Thursday Aug. 30, with a viewing at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

Leonard R. Brooks Jr., 59, of New Castle, died on Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at Christiana Hospital.
Born in Wilmington on Dec. 11, 1947, Mr. Brooks was a graduate of William Penn High School.
He served his country in the U.S. Army as a medical corpsman during the Vietnam War, earning many awards for meritorious service, including the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, the Army Commendation Medal and the Air Medal.
Mr. Brooks was employed as an autoworker for 35 years with the Chrysler Corporation in Newark before his retirement in 2001. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of New Castle.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys M. Adkins Brooks.
He is survived by his father, Leonard R. Brooks Sr. of New Castle; daughter, Kimberly R. Brooks of Delaware City; three brothers, Russell G. Brooks and his wife, Donna, of Lewes; Edward T. Brooks and his companion, Rebecca, of Bear; and Ronald D. Brooks and his wife, Loretta, of New Castle; four nieces; a nephew; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews.
Services were held at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, New Castle, with interment in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

J. Lester Satchell, 80, of Federalsburg, Md., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at Caroline Home for Hospice in Denton.
He was born in Easton on June 26, 1927, the son of the late Curtis Crawford Satchell Sr. and Elizabeth Matilda Miller Satchell.
Mr. Satchell joined the Army-Air Force in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1948 as a corporal.
He had worked at Southern States Feed Mill, Seaford for 33 years.
Mr. Satchell was a member of the Federalsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5246.
He was a member of the Blades United Methodist Church, Blades.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Hazel L. Kemp Satchell, who died on June 17, 2003; and five siblings, Lawrence Satchell, Frances Satchell, Curtis C. Satchell, Doris Lomax and Gladys Quidas.
He is survived by three sons, Larry Satchell of Seaford, Ernie Satchell of Franklin, Tenn., Kevin Breeding of Clearfield, Utah; four daughters, Sandra Norris of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Tina Smith of Easton, Karen Jester of Federalsburg, Pamela McCraw of Fayette, Ala.; a sister, Elizabeth Mitchell of Jamesburg, N.J.; a brother, William Satchell of Brooklet, Ga.; his fiancé, Louise Meredith of Federalsburg; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the Framptom Funeral Home, Federalsburg, with interment at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Md. with military honors.

Irene P. Hocker,

Irene P. Papciak Hocker, 70, of Lewes, passed away at her residence after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born April 8, 1937 in Quakertown, Pa., daughter of the late Edmund T. and Edna (Zuchlinski) Papciak.
Mrs. Hocker was a longtime resident of Lewes and a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. She enjoyed relaxing on her screened porch admiring her beautiful gardens.
She was an avid reader, a bridge player and enjoyed arts and crafts. She was employed as a bookkeeper for several local businesses throughout her life.
However, her most cherished time was spent raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Thomas M. Hocker Jr. in 1991 and her grandson-in-law, Sgt. Robert Stanley, who died in 2007 in Iraq.
She is survived by her fiancé Jim Brittingham; three daughters, Deborah Hazzard of Lewes, Kathleen Wood and her husband Greg of Rehoboth Beach and Patricia Medd and her husband Robb of Lewes; and seven grandchildren; Jayme Hazzard Stanley, John Hazzard III, Katherine Hazzard, Zachary Wood, Caitlin Wood, Devin Medd and Alexa Medd.

Justin Alan Brown, 27, of Wilmington, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, while on vacation in Elysburg, Pa.
Justin graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. He was an avid sports fan who especially loved the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles and looked forward to them winning a major title. Justin enjoyed his many vacations to Disney World and Knoebels Amusement Park where he loved spending time with family and friends.
Justin was preceded in death by his grandfather, George M. Futcher.
Justin is survived by his loving parents, Alan and Kathy Brown; his devoted brothers, Joshua and Zachary Brown; grandparents, Virginia Futcher, Sarah Clark, and James F. and Carol Brown of Long Neck; along with many adoring aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Christopher John Spooner, 28, of Rehoboth Beach and formerly of Canton, Conn., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at his residence. He was born June 23, 1979 in New York, N.Y., son of Terese Marion (Flood) Spooner and Albert John Spooner III of Rehoboth Beach.
Mr. Spooner relocated to Delaware six years ago. He loved fishing and Jeeps. He was a member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Amanda Nicole Spooner of Millsboro; his daughter, Alleah Rose Marie Spooner of Millsboro; his sister, Claire Grayson and her husband Geoff of Amesbury, Mass.; and his paternal grandmother Estelle M. Spooner of Cranbury, N.J.

Ruth C. Huber, 72, of Lewes, formerly of Baltimore, Md., and Shrewsbury, Pa., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at her home.
Mrs. Huber was born in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late Harry and Emma Meise Sr.
Mrs. Huber was family oriented and was known throughout the area for her beautiful smile and laugh. Ruth was a member of S.O.S. in Pennsylvania, the United Methodist Women of Conley’s Church in Lewes, Girls Night Out and was a member of the beautification committee of the Cove on Herring Creek. She was also an avid bowler.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph Edward Huber in 2005.
She is survived by a son, Jeffrey J. Huber and his wife Diane of Baltimore, Md., and a brother, Harry Meise and his wife Myrna of Lewes.

Thomas Alexander Saxton, 74, of Bethany Meadows, passed Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Saxton was born December 12, 1932 in Hartshorne, Okla., son of the late Ralph Merle Saxton and Mildred Isabel (Breckenridge) Saxton.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Saxton went to work with the National Security Agency, retiring in 1979 after 23 years of service. He and his wife Ruth moved to the Delaware area from Ellicott City, Md., in 2000. He was a member of the Lutheran Church Of Our Saviour, Rehoboth Beach, where he had served on many church committees over the years. He was a member of the Whirl-A-Ways Square Dancing Club and enjoyed bowling with Club 55. He also volunteered at ACTS in Ocean View. He enjoyed being a handyman for many people and could often be found working in his yard and gardens.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Rochelle Rambert in 2007.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth Eleanor Saxton; a son, Ron Saxton and his wife Denise of Ellicott City; two daughters, Barb Saxton of Gaithersburg, Md. and Deborah Morgan and her husband Peter of Bowie, Md.; six grandchildren, Shawn Morgan, Jenifer Cochran, Colin Morgan, Chris Saxton, Marc Saxton and Kory Saxton; one great-granddaughter, Brittany Cochran; two sisters, Marianna Freeman of Mesa, Ariz. and Margaret Martin of Bremerton, Wash.

Everett C. Hopkins,

Everett C. Hopkins, 88, of Lexington, W.Va., formerly of Lewes, entered the Lord’s presence Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at Lexington Memorial Hospital, following complications from a stroke on August 9.
Mr. Hopkins was born May 9, 1919, to Laura Futcher Hopkins and James Woolsey Hopkins. He maintained an insurance business in his home for 50-plus years in addition to being engaged in farming. He was a member of Conley’s Methodist Church, Lewes, where he taught Sunday school, was a member of the men’s quartet and held various church leadership roles.
During the 1950s, he sang in the “Precious Memories” quartet from the live weekly radio program bearing the same name. He was a member of The Gideons International and held various offices in his local camp. He derived great pleasure from his involvement in the Lord’s work. He was also a member of the Grange for 50-plus years, having served as master of Coolspring and Henlopen granges, Sussex County Pomona Grange, state chaplain for the Delaware State Grange and represented the Delaware State Grange on the Governor’s Task Force on the Inland Bays from 1983 to 1984.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Grace Conaway Hopkins; a daughter, Judith Briggs and her husband, Bobby, of Lexington; a brother, Ernest F. Hopkins and his wife, Joy, of Lewes; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, where friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 27.
Interment will be at Conley’s Chapel Cemetery, Lewes.

Elizabeth Swain,

Elizabeth “Betty” R. Swain, 89, of Georgetown, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Mrs. Swain was born in Georgetown, daughter of the late Ebe H. and Lena Short Rust and lived in Georgetown all of her life. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Georgetown. Mrs. Swain had been involved in a bridge club for many years. She was a homemaker and truly enjoyed her home and family. Mrs. Swain was pre-deceased by her husband Reese T. Swain, D.D.S. in November 1988. Joyce Ann Goodman, 60, of Millsboro, departed this life peacefully Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, at Coastal Hospice by the Lake in Salisbury, Md.
She was born on July 3, 1947, in Whaleyville, Md., to the late Lenford Handy Jr. and Margaret Handy Savage. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Goodman, in 2004.
She attended St. Matthew’s Baptist Church in Bishopville, Md., where she was an usher and sang in the choir. Previously she attended the Thessalonia Baptist Church in Selbyville. She received her education at the William C. Jason High School in Georgetown. She loved shopping and browsing up and down the aisles.
Mrs. Goodman was a domestic worker in the Ocean City, Md. area; she recently retired from the Castle in the Sand Hotel, Ocean City.
She is survived by five sons, Kevin, Kendall and Michael Handy, all of Millsboro, Keith Handy of Smyrna, and Anthony Goodman of Greenwood; three daughters, Abigail Goodman of Wilmington, Kim Goodman Peed of El Paso, Texas, and Allison Goodman of Pittsville, Md., her stepfather, Clarence Savage of Bishopville; one brother, Woodrow Higgins of Bishopville; four sisters, Urseline Hallet and her husband John of Bishopville, Zakiyya Salahudin and her husband Rick of Selbyville, Fredia Eley and her husband Lee of Milton, and Felicia Johnson and her husband Ronnie of Bishopville; a great-aunt, Grace Taylor; an aunt, Oneida Purnell; an uncle, Leonard Higgins and aunt, Deborah Higgins; her godmother, Mildred Handy; two godsons, Rasheem Handy and Kendrick Bailey, 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Larry Lee Johnson; two special friends, Josephine Felton and Marie Wallop; and many other friends and relatives.

Mildred M. Davis Lloyd, 88, of Millsboro, formerly of Newark, was called home to be with the Lord Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.
Born in Pikeville, Ky., on July 2, 1919, Mrs. Lloyd was the youngest of 13 children born to the late Thomas Hawkins Robinson and Mary Elizabeth Thornsbury Robinson. She was a talented homemaker throughout her life and was also employed with the Department of Housing and Residence Life at the University of Delaware, where she retired in 1981. In her leisure hours, she greatly enjoyed reading books and being entertained by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lloyd was the true center of her family and was deeply loved and cherished by everyone. She will be sadly missed not only by her family, but also by her many dear friends and all those who were fortunate to have known her.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lloyd was preceded in death by her first husband, James P. Davis Sr.; her second husband, George Lloyd; a son-in-law, Benjamin D. Mullins; a grandson, Ronald G. Williams Jr.; a brother and 11 sisters. She is survived by eight children, Barbara J. Mullins of Newark, Helen K. Williams and her husband Ronald G. Sr. of Wilmington, Mary L. Mitchell, with whom she lived, James P. Davis Jr. of Newark, Billy R. Davis and his wife, Janis of Seaford, Caroletta S. Thompson and her husband John G. Sr. of Laurel, Elizabeth A. DuHadaway and her husband Larry Jr. of Millsboro, and Robert R. Davis of Newark; 25 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and staff of Life Care at Lofland Park and of Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for their attentive and compassionate care of Mrs. Lloyd during her illness.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 23, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Newark. Interment was in Gilpin Manor Memorial Park, Elkton.

Betty Estes Traumann, 78, of Wilmington, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at home.
Born in Cascade, Va., Mrs. Traumann was the daughter of the late James Dabney and Bettie Starling Estes. A graduate of Hollins College in Roanoke, Va., she taught science and math at Connecticut College in Storrs, Conn., and then taught at Chatham Hall boarding school in Chatham, Va., before settling in Wilmington, where she was employed by the DuPont Co. Mrs. Traumann was an active member and deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she and her late husband, Klaus, were married in 1958. She was a member of the board of trustees of the Children’s Beach House Inc. of Lewes, and she was active in the Gordon Heights Garden Club, the Occidentals Club and the Wilmington-area Hollins Club, as well as a frequent student at the Academy of Lifelong Learning of the University of Delaware. Mrs. Traumann loved to walk and could often be found strolling in the gardens at Winterthur or at Brandywine Creek State Park and Ashland Nature Center.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Frank Marsden of Atlanta, Ga.; her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Pam of Lansdowne, Pa.; her grandsons, Thomas and Patrick Marsden of Atlanta; and her sister and brother-in-law, Drewry and Frank Logan of Hanover, N.H.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 1, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Pennsylvania Ave. and Rodney Street, Wilmington.

Dr. Lawrence F. Conlin Jr., 84, of Wilmington, passed away Aug. 19, 2007, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
In his final days, he was surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff of Rockland Place and Compassionate Care Hospice. Larry was born and raised in Wilmington and attended Sacred Heart grade school and P.S. DuPont High School. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the 2nd Division of the U.S. Marine Corps as a Navy corpsman pharmacist’s first mate. Larry served in the Pacific theatre and was an occupation troop in Nagasaki, Japan, after the second atomic bomb. To quote him: “Even though I saw no combat, I am proud of having served my country for 3 1/2 years. Those years had a profound effect on my life and my aspirations all of which came true.” Following his military service, Dr. Conlin attended LaSalle University and received his dental degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. He did a residency at the Emily P. Bissell Hospital before starting his private dental practice in North Wilmington. For over 40 years, Dr. Conlin served the needs of his dental patients with professional expertise and a gentle manner. Until his retirement in 1993, he was active in many professional organizations, including the American Dental Association and the Delaware State Dental Society. He was an exceptional athlete in his youth and passed his love of sports on to his children. Larry spent many years coaching their Little League teams; as they went on to play on various high school and college sports teams, he and his first wife, Eloise, rarely missed an event. He was a proud member of the Abadoubalis Club, and a longstanding parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Dr. Conlin was predeceased by his first wife of 43 years, Eloise Calahan Conlin, and by his granddaughter, Kristen Reneé Conlin. He is survived by his second wife, Norma Davis Conlin of Wilmington; children, Mary Judge and Leo of Philadelphia, Pa., Dr. Karen Conlin and Denise Day of Kennett Square, Pa., Kevin Conlin and Linda of Wichita, Kan., Brian Conlin and Marilou of Lewes, and Daniel Conlin and Mary of Wilmington. In addition, he is survived by 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Jacqueline Corrigan of Dagsboro, and Dorothea Frugoli of Morris, Ala.; one brother, Richard Conlin Sr. of Avondale, Pa., and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Rockland Place and Compassionate Care Hospice for their kindness while Larry was infirmed.

Evelyn Marie Middaugh Ashby, 86, of Milton, passed away from this life on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, in Lewes Convalescent Center and is safely home with her Savior following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Ashby was born on June 15, 1921, in St. Mary’s, W.Va., the oldest of eight children in a close-knit Methodist minister’s family.
She was a self-taught pianist and organist and she volunteered her instrumental and vocal musical talents in church throughout her life.
Mrs. Ashby attended Fairmont State Teachers College, receiving degrees in biology and home economics.
She married the love of her life, E. Mason Ashby in 1943, raised four sons and devoted herself to home, family and serving in the Methodist Church.
Through various moves, Mrs. Ashby has lived in Fairmont, W.Va., West Caldwell, N.J., McMurray, Pa., and Milton.
Her family will miss her sweet smile, sparkling blue eyes and her kind, soft-spoken nature.
She was preceded in death was her beloved husband of 63 years, E. Mason Ashby.
She is survived by her sons, Edgar Mason Ashby Jr. and his wife Patty of Des Moines, Iowa, William I. Ashby of Harbeson, Robert E. Ashby and his wife Sandy of Newark, and Richard A. Ashby of Milton; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her seven brothers and sisters and their extended families.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call one hour prior.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Jeffrey and Linda Kurtz and her paternal grandparents, Paul and Barbara Ann Uhlig; an uncle, Shawn Uhlig; and a half-brother, Kenneth Uhlig.

Shirley Lois Ritchie-Howell, 76, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Rehoboth Beach and Angola, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007.
Mrs. Ritchie-Howell was an avid bird watcher, traveler and musician playing the organ. She lived in the Fiji Islands for four years. She retired from Dupont Industries as an executive secretary. After retirement, she and her husband retired to Fort Myers in 2002.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Theodore Paul Ritchie. She is survived by her husband, Richard Benjamin Howell III; children, Jan M. Ritchie, Dixie A. Ritchie, Ted C. Ritchie, and Lou Ann Hollingsworth; a sister, Brenda Beck; and many granddogs.
There will be a private interment at Townsend Cemetery in Townsend.

Irene Phillips Kelso Sorbara, 69, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Lewes. She was born on March 15, 1938 in Lewes, daughter of the late Hettie Mildred Moore Phillips and Clifford Futcher Phillips.
Mrs. Sorbara was an elementary school teacher for 30 years, all in the Rehoboth Beach Elementary School. She was a member of the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church of Midway. She was also a member of Unity Chapter 16, Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron in 1985.
Mrs. Sorbara was predeceased by her first husband, Hugh Kelso Jr. in 1970 and by her second husband, Rosario Salvatore Sorbara in 2006. Survivors include her aunt, Margaret Moore of Rehoboth Beach; her uncle, Clifford Moore of Milford; several cousins and friends; and all the children she taught and loved dearly.

Frederick DaPrile,

Frederick DaPrile, 68, of Milton, and formerly of Clark, N.J. passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2007 evening of complications due to a brain aneurysm. He was born and raised in Rahway, N.J. and resided in Clark for 37 years.
Mr. DaPrile was an avid Yankee fan and played softball throughout the years. He was an Air Force veteran and owned and operated DaPrile Ornamental Railings in Linden, N.J., for more than 30 years. He retired a few years back with his loving wife Arleen and enjoyed fishing, watching his grandchildren’s ball games, playing with their two dogs, reading, horseback riding, and of course, he loved watching the Yankees. He will be truly missed by all he has touched.
Mr. DaPrile was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anna DaPrile and his brother Joseph DaPrile.
He was the loving and devoted husband of 46 years to Arleen DaPrile and the loving father of Sharon Vitella and Denise DaPrile. He also was the devoted grandfather of his three grandchildren, Devin Kai, Kira Ann and Timothy Kiv. He is survived also by his sister Joanne, brother-in-law George Ahapow, son-in-law David Vitella and future son-in-law Michael Ragoza.

Shari Lynn Lathbury, 37, of Laurel, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, in the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, Md. Shari was born in Milford on January 17, 1970, the daughter of Ronald and Sharon Lightcap Wootten. She attended Rehoboth Junior High School, where she was the school mascot. She graduated from Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes. She worked as a reservationist for Go Golf Travel in Ocean City, Md., for five years. Prior to that, she was the store manager for Shoe Show in Millsboro, and helped set up the Shoe Show store in Milford as well as many other stores throughout the Eastern Shore. Shari loved scrapbooking, loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. She also loved to write poetry in her spare time. She enjoyed listening to Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge. She was an avid cat lover.
Shari is survived by her husband of 2 1/2 years, Brian P. Lathbury; her mother, Sharon Lightcap Wootten of Milford; her father, Ronald Wootten of Millsboro; an uncle, Marvin Lightcap of Wilmington; an aunt, Gloria Coverdale of Milford; her father- and mother-in-law, Patrick and Jo Ann Lathbury of Laurel; three sisters-in-law, Cheryl Clifton of Millsboro, Patti Lathbury of Laurel, and Karen Elliott of Bridgeville; a special friend, Brenda Sharp of Milford; several nieces, nephews and cousins and her pride and joy, her cat Ed.

Edwin A. Thomas Sr., 85, of Wilmington, gently passed peacefully into God’s loving arms at home Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, surrounded by his loving wife, family and friends, having survived cancer since 1986.
Born in Cambridge, Md., Ed moved to Elsmere as a child and resided in that area through his life. A graduate of Conrad High School, he retired from the Delaware Department of Labor as a purchasing agent in 1984 after 22 years. Politically aware and active, Ed campaigned hard for causes he supported. He was instrumental in securing life insurance benefits for Delaware state employees and derived great satisfaction from volunteering with Suburban Youth Center and local candidates for public office. He was an active member of the Hamorton United Methodist Church and the Gordy Estate Civic Association. Ed enjoyed traveling, especially visiting casinos, and loved spending time in the evenings in front of his woodstove with his wife and friends.
With his twinkling blue eyes and smile for everyone, he will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 31 years, Patricia A. Thomas. “Mr. Ed” is also survived by his children, Edwin A. Thomas Jr. of Newark, Judy Anderson of Minnetonka, Minn., Mary Beth D’Amico of Lewes, and David Thomas of Monterey Park, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; an aunt, Becky Woodward of Wilmington; and many cousins.

Thomas “Tommy” Charles Crawford, 44, of Lewes, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
Mr. Crawford was born Jan. 29, 1963, in Norfolk, Va., the son of Thomas Rule and Frances Hayden Crawford. Tommy served in the U.S. Army during the Panama crisis. Mr. Crawford was a certified mechanic and worked for The Garage in Rehoboth Beach. Tommy was a member of American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro. He also enjoyed fishing, working on his truck and his two pit bulls.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Tina Crawford; a son, Thomas Rule Crawford; a stepdaughter, Kirstie Cox; two stepsons, Danny Snyder and David Snyder; and two sisters, Catherine Crawford and Vickie Vaughan and her husband Robert of Millsboro. Tommy is also survived by an extended family and numerous friends.

Helen Louise Golden, 80, of Rehoboth Beach, went peacefully to God’s heavenly home on Friday, Aug. 17, 2007.
She was born in Christiana, the daughter of the late Herbert W. and Ada Cleaves. Helen spent most of her 51 years of married life with her late husband, Joseph Golden, in Newport and Ocean City, Md. After his passing in 1995, until 2004 she lived full time in Ocean City. In 2004 Helen moved to the Brandywine Seaside Assisted Living Facility in Rehoboth. There she made many friends who shared her love of reminiscing and playing games, especially cards. Helen was a member of the Red Hat Club, the garden club and a former member of the Senior Citizen Center in Ocean City. She was formerly a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Newport, and more recently a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in West Ocean City, Md.
Besides her husband and parents, Helen was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Sallee. She is survived by her children, Joanne Stokes and her husband Samuel of Penhook, Va., Patricia Schneider and her husband John of Lewes, Joseph Ronald Golden and his wife Brenda of West Ocean City, and Thomas Golden and his companion, Susie Steinman of Los Angeles, Calif.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Herbert “Junior” Cleaves and his wife Joanne of Stanton; a sister, Betty Ann Redding of Newport; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Wilson and Carolyn McCabe; and several nieces and nephews.

Desmond “Dez” Jobe, 49, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Arlington, Va., passed away Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Dez was born in Winchester, Va., son of Tyson H. Jobe of Stephens City, Va. and the late Joyce C. Huff Adams.
He moved to Delaware from Arlington about four years ago.
Dez was a waiter at Dos Locos in Rehoboth Beach.
He had a passion for living and spent his free time enjoying his friends.
You would rarely find Dez without his camera, waiting for the perfect shot.
His loves included cooking, music and graphic art.
Dez’s talents will be greatly missed. In addition to his mother, Joyce, who passed away in 2004, he was preceded in death by a brother, Corey Adams in 1990.
In addition to his father, he is survived by five siblings, Terry Emery of Charlottesville, Va., Heidi Russell and Charles Adams, both of Winchester, Tim Jobe of Culpeper, Va., and J.T. Jobe of Leesburg, Va.; and his companion, Brent Herd of Rehoboth Beach.

Shirley Marie Spinella, 68, of Dover, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her family and friends.
Shirley was born Oct. 27, 1938, in Greenville, Miss., to the late Jesse Lee Crenshaw and Mary Lee Bow Crenshaw. She was also preceded in death by her brother, James Paul Crenshaw.
She graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville, Miss., in 1956 and proudly graduated magna cum laude from Wesley College in Dover.
Shirley loved her family and friends.
Being a grandmother was one of her greatest enjoyments.
Shirley enjoyed her garden, feeding and watching the birds and squirrels in her backyard.
She loved animals of all kinds, especially her beloved cats, Bootsy and Rusty, and believed in and supported no-kill rescues of cats and dogs.
One of Shirley’s favorite pastimes was to play the slot machines.

Richard James “Dick” Greer, 86, of Georgetown, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at home.
Mr. Greer was born in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Stephen and Mary Grahm Greer.
He was a manager with the United Insurance Co. of America for 45 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the President’s Club and Hall of Fame for leading the nation in insurance sales.
Mr. Greer was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. His memberships included the Franklin Masonic Lodge 12 for 61 years, American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro, past commander of American Legion Post 8 of Georgetown and past member of the Bishopville (Md.) Elks Club.
He especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Greer.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Anna Margaret Washington Greer; three children, Sara Johnson, Richard Jay Greer and his wife Diane, and Debra Hazzard, all of Georgetown; a sister, Jane Boyce of Millsboro; two brothers, Robert Greer of Salisbury, Md., and John Greer of Philadelphia; nine grandchildren, Michelle Gagnon, Aimee Gagnon, Richard Joshua Greer, Deana Cochran, James Richard Greer, George Johnson, Katherine Hazzard, Sara Hazzard and Wilson Hazzard; seven great-grandchildren, Lucas Gagnon, Nathan Gagnon, Cassidy Blevens, Carlie Gagnon, Amie Cochran, Braden Cochran and Hunter Greer; and his dog, Bill.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 20, in Georgetown, with interment in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Beverly Anne Saunders, 56, of Millsboro, formerly of Cambridge, Md., departed this life Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was born Nov. 30, 1950, in Cambridge, daughter of Goldie Hemphill and the late Chauncey Saunders, and was raised by the late Nathaniel and Gertrude Stewart.
Beverly was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County and was a 1968 graduate of Cambridge High School.
She was employed at M&T Bank, Millsboro, until her health started to fail. Beverly was a strong woman of the Lord and a member of Bay Shore Community Church, Millsboro.
Her special hobbies were going to church, reading the Bible, playing the piano at Tunnell Cancer Center and doing hair where she graduated from, Delmarva Beauty School, Salisbury, Md. In addition to her father and parents who reared her, Ms. Saunders was preceded in death by her brother, Leon Clash; and a sister, Belinda Hackett.
Ms. Saunders leaves to mourn her passing her daughters, Shannon Saunders of Baltimore, and Marsha Opher of Hurlock, Md.; a grandson, Josiah Opher; her ex-husband, Carl Opher Jr.; three sisters, Vernetta Hackett, Althea Saunders and Gia Saunders; a brother, Chauncey Saunders; three aunts, Dorine Johnson, Roslyn Carnage and Tavolia Carter; an uncle, Henry Carnage; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held Saturday, Aug. 18, in Cambridge, with interment in Waugh Chapel Cemetery.

Stephanie Virginia Mumford, 44, of Millsboro, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at home.
Stephanie graduated from Indian River High School in 1981. She was a cheerleader and in the band. She was employed as a cosmetics manager for the Georgetown Wal-Mart. She had the biggest smile and was a “Wal-Mart diva.” She was a community angel who looked out for everyone and helped them stay on the right path and have fun.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Adelle Lillard Mitchell Sr.
She is survived by her children, Nathan Mumford, Stanley Mumford and Shaunna Mumford; her brothers and sisters, Jerry Mumford, Roland Mumford, Earlest Mumford, Walter Mumford, William Hardy, Fred Mitchell Jr., Kenneth Mitchell, Bruce Mitchell, Kevin Mitchell, Marion Mitchell, Eric Mitchell, Mary Hallett, Barbara Mumford, Debra Morris, Janice Williams, Samantha Smith, Patricia Green and Pamela Mitchell; and three grandchildren, Princess Nye, Little Tim and Sean.
Services will be held at noon, Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Calvary Pentecostal Church Bishopville, Md., where friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon. Pastors Donald and Mary Alice Johnson will officiate.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Earl Clarence Tuberson, 83, of Rehoboth Beach, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at the Greater Southeast Community Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Born in Ridgway, Pa., he graduated from St. Mary’s High School, St. Mary’s, Pa., in 1942.
Earl served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and following that he attended and graduated from Penn State University.
He taught night school for a few years in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where he met Ruth Ann Leonard. Following their marriage in 1954, they moved to Dallas, Texas, for several years and then moved to Wilmington, where Earl worked for the state of Delaware as a state planner. Upon retirement for the state Earl and Ruth moved in 1986 to White House Beach in Millsboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence J. and Edith Tuberson, and by his wife Ruth in 1996.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert J. Tuberson and his wife Griselda of Virginia Beach, Va., and William E. Tuberson Sr. and his wife Fern of Ridgway, Pa.; a sister, Alice M. Kieffer of Topeka, Kan.; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro.
Burial will be privately held at a later date in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South, Millsboro.

Walter ‘Corkey’ Phillips,

Walter Wise “Corkey” Phillips, 93, of Millsboro, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mr. Phillips was born March 17, 1914, in Frankford. He was the son of Walter and Allie May Phillips and an identical twin whose brother Kermit died at age 12. Walter graduated from Westchester State Teachers College in 1942. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran who served in the South Pacific. After the war, he was a teacher in Delaware and Maryland high schools. He was interested in history and designed the constitutional compass rose that was dedicated Dec. 7, 1988, in front of Legislative Hall in Dover.
He umpired baseball and officiated at basketball games in Delaware and was a lifetime member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials. While on summer break from teaching, he worked at Kutscher’s Sports Academy in upstate New York. He was one of the original members of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Selbyville. He was a lifetime member of the Mason-Dixon VFW Post 7234. Walter was an avid horticulturalist and while he was a member of the American Holly Society, he discovered and registered several varieties of holly.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Jon T. Phillips; a daughter Allison Agra and her husband, Eduardo; and grandchildren, Laura and Eric Agra. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Millsboro.

Roland V. Cobb, 85, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Dagsboro, passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, at Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach.
Mr. Cobb was born in Clarksville, son of the late Vernon and Mary Jane Rickards Cobb. Roland was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a licensed real estate broker for more than 40 years and owned Cobb Real Estate Co. in Dagsboro.
Mr. Cobb served on the board of directors of the Delmarva Poultry Industry for 20 years and received a Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service to the poultry industry. Mr. Cobb also served as chairman on the board of trustees at Bethel Methodist Church in Dagsboro. He was a member of Doric Lodge 30 in Millville and was 32nd-degree Mason.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Yvonne C. Cobb, June 13, 2007.

Henry loved horse racing and gardening. He was a very open and plain speaking person.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Holden Sr. and Lottie May DuPont Mills ; two daughters, Maryland Marie and Vernitha Holden; three sisters, Virginia May Long, Elizabeth Hall and Claire Wise.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary C. Holden; two sons, Henry Holden III and wife Louise of Millsboro, and Nathan Henry of Georgetown; three daughters, Ruby Marshall and husband Shamir of Millsboro, Marilyn Holden ,and fiance Ronald Gibbs of Selbyville, and Emma Gibbs and husband Larry Jr. of Harbeson. He is also survived by three grandchildren he raised, Ronald Holden, Katrina Holden , and Latoya Holden; and one nephew; and a host of cousins and friends.

Mr. Carroll was born in Wilmington, son of the late Roland W. III and Joan Parlier Carroll. He retired as a union pipe fitter, a member of Pipe Fitter Union of Seaford, Local 313.
A proud veteran of the U.S. National Guard, Mr. Carroll was a member of the American Legion Post 19 of Laurel.

Eugenia (Slenys) Pakulis, 83, of Rehoboth Beach, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Pakulis was born in Kaunas, Lithuania.
She had been employed as an editor and translator for the U.S. government in Washington, D.C. She was fluent in five languages: Lithuanian, English, French, German and Russian.
She retired in 1982 and moved to Rehoboth Beach. She enjoyed reading and poetry.
Mrs. Pakulis was a very vivacious lady. She was known for her love of animals and for rescuing many stray cats.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Casimir Pakulis of Rehoboth Beach.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, at Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Henlopen Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.

Mrs. Fleming moved 25 years ago to Sussex County from New Castle.
She was a member and volunteer at Harbor Lights. Mrs. Fleming resided at Hulling Cove prior to moving to Harbor Healthcare in March.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Fleming (1993); her brother George Spoerl; and her sister, Rose Springer.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda M. Mary (Parks) Russell, 60, of Millville, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 24, 1947, in Cresson, Pa., daughter of the late William and Mary Parks.
Mary loved her many family and friends and was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 7234 and Moose Lodge 2204. She worked in the medical field as an insurance billing and collections coordinator.
She was also a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Bethany Beach.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John Parks.
She is survived by her remaining brothers and sisters and their spouses: Albert (Kay), of Margaretville, N.Y., Anita Burk of Cresson, Daniel Parks of Cresson, Rose Marie (Joe) Dolansky, of Centerville, Va.; Gerald Parks of Lewistown, Pa.; Susie Ellis of Cresson; Sally (Joseph) Horvath of Rehoboth Beach, Richard (Barbara), of Erie, Pa. and Peter (Anne) Parks of Lewistown. Hector Elias Villa, 73, of Dover, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Villa was born in Medellin, Colombia.
He was an educator in several surrounding districts.
Mr. Villa graduated from Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn., and completed his graduate studies in Spanish in Spain from the University of Northern Iowa.
He taught for the Capital School District for 34 years, teaching Spanish and coaching soccer.
Mr. Villa also taught adult English as a second language for the Caesar Rodney School District for 25 years, and helped develop outreach ministries for migrant workers through the Delmarva Rural Ministries.
He traveled widely and enjoyed photography and coin and stamp collecting.
Mr. Villa was a dedicated father who cared for his family and was a member of the Victory Christian Fellowship Church of Dover.
He is survived by his wife, Emerita Villa; a daughter, Elsa Schmidt of Arizona; two sons, Hector Villa of Dover and Carlos Villa of Georgetown; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Flor Vargas and Amalia Navarro, both of Ohio, and Ofelia Castillo of California.
A memorial service was held at Victory Christian Fellowship Church, 18 Greenhill Ave., Dover.

Magnolia M. “Maggie” Mifflin, 76, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2007, at the Harrison House Senior Living Center, Georgetown.
Maggie was born April 26, 1931, in Dover, daughter of the late Thomas and Rhonda Pettyjohn Mifflin.
She was a graduate of the Culinary Arts School at Delaware Technical & Community College, Georgetown, and was employed as chief cook by Lewes Head Start Center.
Maggie also owned a cleaning service, working until she was 75.
She was a member of the Burton Chapel AME Church, Milton, where she served as an usher for many years, was a member of the Stewardess Board and was a missionary.
Maggie is survived by six children, Arlene Serrano of Georgetown, Ranford Allen Jr. of Lancaster, Pa., Debra Weekes of Tampa, Fla., Wanda Weston of Lewes, Lorenzo Mifflin of Georgetown, and Cynthia McCummings of New York City; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and an adopted daughter, Elizabeth Myers of Georgetown.
She was preceded in death by two sons and a daughter, Bermis Mifflin, Travis Mifflin and Vera Arroyo; and two sisters, Lena Gore and Laura Hubert.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17, at Burton Chapel AME Church, Milton, with the Rev. Jean Wylie officiating.

Interment will follow in Old Hickory Cemetery, Lincoln.

Jack Dean Pack, 81, of Lewes, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at his residence.
Mr. Pack was born in Sioux City, Iowa, son of the late Robert Pack and Inez (Heydon) Dubes. He had served as regional vice president of the American Express Co.
He was an avid computer user and an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling. Mr. Pack was a member of the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2547 and the Masonic Lodge in Berlin, Germany. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Rehoboth Beach.
Mr. Pack was a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the Air Force.
He is survived by his wife Diantha E. (Seaman) Pack of Lewes; a daughter, Kim Elizabeth Lord of Big Bear City, Calif.; a son, Mark Eliot Pack of Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Janet Puguon of Searchlight, Nev.; a half-brother, Robert Pack of Porterville, Calif.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, King Charles & Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach, with Rev. Frank Demming officiating. Interment will be private.

Norma A. Stokes, 88, of Lewes, formerly of Dover, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Francis J. Bonn and Helma Anton Bonn.
Mrs. Stokes and her family had resided in Wilmington from 1956 until moving to Dover in 1979. Mrs. Stokes had moved from Dover in 2000 and resided in Lewes until her death.
While living in Dover, Mrs. Stokes had been a member of Christ Episcopal Church. A dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, in her quieter moments she enjoyed playing bridge. A warm and sincere person, Mrs. Stokes will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. Besides her parents, Mrs. Stokes was also predeceased by her husband, Edwin M. Stokes Sr., who died in 1996, and her son, Edwin M. Stokes Jr., who died in 2006.
She is survived by her son, The Hon. Richard F. Stokes and his wife Sally S. Stokes of Rehoboth Beach; a granddaughter, Sarah Musser and her husband Dr. R. Clayton Musser of Durham, N.C.; a grandson, R. Hunter Stokes of Rehoboth; and a great-grandson, Luke Stokes Musser of Durham, N.C.
Graveside committal services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 16, in the Madonna Cemetery, Fort Lee, N.J., with burial following. The family suggests donations in her memory be made to Beebe Medical Foundation, 902 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958.

John Robert Tillotson, 40, of Bridgeville, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007, at his residence of natural causes, the result of a long and lingering illness.
Mr. Tillotson was the son of Robert Louis Tillotson of Lugoff, S.C. and Delores “Dee” (Benjamin) Tillotson of Severn, Md. For several years he had worked in the travel industry, primarily at Baltimore-Washington Airport. He moved to Delaware in 1997. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tilottson is also survived by his sister, Tracy Marie Tillotson; a niece, LeAnn Marie Tillotson; his paternal grandparents, Lewis and Jean Tillotson of Elmira, N.Y.; his stepmother, Toni Tillotson of Lugoff, S.C.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his maternal grandparents, Leon and Olive Benjamin. Services will be private. Memorial contributions are suggested to the hemophilia chapter.

Jeanette A. McCabe Lynch, 63, of Selbyville, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at home.
She was predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Catherine Robinson Lynch. Her first husband, Merrill F. McCabe, passed in 2001.
Survivors include her husband, Allen L. Lynch; children, Merrill A. McCabe of Georgetown, Robert L. McCabe of Shannon, N.C., Marsha L. Davis and husband Rodney of Selbyville, Tammy M. Johnson and husband Walter of Selbyville; a stepdaughter, Jessica Taylor and husband Jason of Girdletree, Va.; brothers, Robert Lynch of Greenville, N.C., Raymond A. Lynch Jr. of Trails End, Va.; sisters, Dolores Morris and Edna Hudson of Selbyville, Jennie L. Bush and Ethel M. Jones of Millsboro; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Jeanette was a member of the Blackwater Fellowship Church in Roxana.

Barbara Boland Foti, 69, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, at her home.
She was born on August 17, 1937, to the late Eleanor Stout Boland and William Boland. Barbara was raised in Gaithersburg, Md., and graduated from the Academy of Holy Names in Silver Spring, Md., and St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, Md. She taught at Goldey Beacom College in Delaware, Montgomery County Public Schools Adult Education Department in Maryland and in federal and county governments in the Washington, D.C. area. Barbara taught business subjects at Washington Business School in Rockville, Md., and Vienna, Va., and was dean of students at Washington Business School for 11 years. She was also dean of secretarial studies for the Katharine Gibbs School in Rockville for five years, where she implemented a student success program used in all the Gibbs schools. Combining her love for teaching with administration, Barbara felt strongly about helping her students develop their potential to become the best they could be. She received the Virginia Association of Private Career Schools Award for Teacher of the Year in 1991 and its Distinguished Service Award in 1994. After retiring to Lewes in 2000, Barbara volunteered at Beebe Medical Center, worked as bulletin editor for St. Jude The Apostle Church and served as secretary of the Liturgy Committee, a lector, a Eucharistic minister and a hospital minister to the sick. She also facilitated a program for separated and divorced Catholics.
Barbara is survived by three daughters, Linda Daugherty, her husband John and their four children, Andrew, Lauren, Chris and Katie of Virginia Beach, Va., Lisa Creamer, her husband Sean and their three children, Kevin, Ryan and Colleen of Olney, Md., and Laurie Ferguson, her husband Andy and their son Garrett of Keyser, W.V. She is also survived by her fiancé, David Vaughn of Rehoboth Beach; her sister, Susan Southwell of Germantown, Md.; a niece; two nephews; and dear family and friends. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, and again from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, at St. Jude The Apostle Church, Route 1, Lewes, prior to Mass. Ronald A. Letson, 72, of Millsboro, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at Beebe Hospital in Lewes.
He was the son of the late Armin C. and Charlotte Johnson Letson.
Ronald was a member of the Dagsboro American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro. He loved to work on his computer and read.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Letson; children, Jerry and Joey Letson of Syracuse, N.Y., David Letson of Egg Harbor, N.J., Buddy Baker of Dagsboro, Charles Baker of Seaford, George Baker of Laurel, Mary Polite of Millsboro and Cindy Pruette of Pennsville, N.J.; one brother, Jeffrey Letson of New York; a beloved cousin, Patty Monto of Oswetatchie, N.Y.; a good friend, Richard Mosley of Berlin, Md.; 15 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

James K. Lehman, 45, of Lewes, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at his home. Born Aug. 27, 1961, in Watsontown, Pa., he was the son of James N. Lehman of Allenwood, Pa., and Judith Swoper Miller, with whom he was living.
A 1979 graduate of Warrior Run High School, he attended Kent State University. He was an advocate for stem-cell research and a member of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
Surviving besides his parents are his stepmother, Christina Lehman of Allenwood; a sister, Jo Reichard of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a stepbrother, Timothy Guffey of Bellefonte, Pa.; a stepsister, Tina Prowant of Lewisburg, Pa; two nieces, Andrea and Erica Reichard; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 13, at Brooks Funeral Home, 207 Broadway St., Turbotville, Pa., with retired pastor the Rev. James H. Gold officiating. Burial will follow in Turbotville Cemetery.

Jean Baptiste Levesque, 83, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away peacefully at his residence Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born June 24, 1924 in Fall River, Mass., son of the late George and Philomene Belanger Levesque.
Mr. Levesque started his career as a civil engineer with the federal government in the District of Columbia where he worked for 25 years. Following his civil service, he worked for Gannett & Flemming Engineering firm in Baltimore, Md. He then worked as a freelance consultant in civil engineering, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach where he was active in the Knights of Columbus. During World War II, he was a first lieutenant with the U.S. Army serving for more than three years throughout Europe. He was a member of the Ocean View VFW Mason Dixon Post 7234, the American Legion Post 5, Rehoboth Beach, and Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540.
He was an avid golfer and he enjoyed bowling. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lorette Marie Lafleur Levesque; two sons, Roger Levesque and his wife Karen of Reading, Pa. and Thomas Levesque and his wife Linda of Dallas, Texas; seven daughters, Elaine Brogan of Fredericksburg, Va., Dorothy Regan and her husband Jim of Glen Rock, Pa., Patricia Morgan and her husband John of Frederick, Md., Susan Gilbert and her husband Dave of Bethesda, Md., Janet Butler and her husband Roscoe of Frederick, Md., Yvonne Sargent of Riverview, Fla. and Bernadette Turner and her husband William of Laurel, Md.; and 13 grandchildren.

Helen Hawkins Haase,

Helen Hawkins Haase, 75, of Wilmington, died Sunday, August 5, 2007, at home in the company of her family.
Helen was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the eldest daughter of Lee Russell and Frances Niefer Hawkins. After a few years in Philadelphia, the family relocated to the Milford area for a number of years before settling in Wilmington in the 1940s. In 1949 Helen graduated from Wilmington High School where she was a member of the library squad and the glee club. In 1951, she married the late Henry A. Haase of Wilmington. In 1963, she went to work for the Wilmington Free Institute Library. In 1968, she accepted a position with the DuPont Co. where she worked for 24 years with the Technical Library before retiring in 1992. She was a devoted member of Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church and enjoyed her active role in the women’s group at church.
She enjoyed classical and operatic music, gardening, cooking, attending local sporting events, reading and being in the company of her co-workers, friends, and mostly, her loving family. She thoroughly enjoyed recounting the family history.
She is survived by her daughter, Joanne L. Haase of Wilmington; three sons, Bruce H. Haase of Dover, Robin R. Haase of Wilmington, and Alan E. Haase, and his wife Karen of Wilmington; her very special grandson, Christopher A. Haase and his wife Dr. Kelly Tan-Haase of Wilmington; two sisters, Frances Brown and her husband Ross of Millsboro, and Marilynn Toomey and husband John of Newark; three brothers, Leroy Hawkins and his wife Joyce of Newark, Donald Hawkins and his wife Mary Lou of Greenville, and Ralph T. Hawkins and his wife Joyce of Downingtown, Pa.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday August 13, in Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church, 101 Old Kennett Road, Greenville, where family and friends may call at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Route 13, New Castle.

David John Warrington, 50, of Felton, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2007, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford.
He was born Feb. 14, 1957, in Milford. After graduating from Lake Forest High School, Mr. Warrington spent eight years in the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by two daughters, Heather Gatti of Felton and Kathy Denn of Milton; three grandchildren, Samantha Warrington, R.J. Gatti and Haily Denn; his foster father and mother, Richard and Esther Pepper of Felton; a brother, William Martin Warrington of Dover; a sister, Nada Kimball of Magnolia; a foster brother, Monty Pepper of Smyrna; and two foster sisters, Marie Kemp of Dover, and Donna Ansbach of Felton.
Memorial services were held Thursday, Aug. 9, at Trader Funeral Home in Dover.
Burial will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro, at the convenience of the family.

James “Baby James” Ernest Finney Sr., 62, of Millsboro, passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born in Millsboro, the son of the late James Henry Finney and Mary Harmon Nelson.
Mr. Finney was a retired truck driver, having worked for Townsend’s for 25 years and S&R Distributors for 10 years. He was currently an employee of Stockley Center on medical leave.
He was a member of Bible Church of Christ, Dagsboro.
Mr. Finney was a loving man, a loving father, a loving grandfather and a loving friend.
He was a wonderful singer.
Mr. Finney is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ethel Collins Finney; two sons, James E. Finney Jr. and his wife Celestine of Columbia, S.C., and Darrus Finney of Millsboro; three daughters, Delia Hall and her husband Timothy of Millsboro, Jacqueline Hudson and her husband William of Selbyville, and F. Melody Edme of Boston; two brothers, Robert Mannings of Dover, and Simon Mannings of Millsboro; one sister, Joann Thompson of Millsboro; a godson, Julian Coffee; two special aunts, Jennie “Tinky” Hitchens and Blanche “Sickie” Miller; eight grandchildren, Timothy, Tempestt, William III, Mylez, Ashia, Jameelah, James III and Darneeka; one great-grandchild, Tyleta; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday in the Bible Church of Christ, Diamond Acres, Dagsboro. Interment was in Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery.

John R. Burrows, 67, of Millsboro, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Burrows was born in Wilmington, son of the late Clarence and Susie Beeson Burrows.
He relocated to Sussex County with his wife in 2001 from Wilmington.
Mr. Burrows was a member of the New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Rehoboth Beach; the AmVets Post 2, the Elks Club and the Indian River Yacht Club in Oak Orchard.
He had formerly been a drag racer up and down the East Coast. Mr. Burrows had served in the National Guard with a rank of Sgt. E-5.
He had been employed in sales for Shallcross Chevrolet Nucar, Middletown.
Mr. Burrows is survived by his wife of 39 years, Betty Lou Chapman Burrows; a son, John F. Burrows of Wilmington; a sister, Susanna E. Burrows Brooks of Wilmington; two grandchildren, Tessa Marie Pearson and Bryianna Pearson; and a niece, Stephanie Dickson of Wilmington.
Funeral services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes. Interment will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 10, 2007 in Chester Bethel United Methodist Cemetery, 2619 Foulk Road, Wilmington.

Marguerite Bowers Whitlock, 84, of Delmar, formerly of Seaford, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, in Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation, Delmar.
Mrs. Whitlock was born in Seaford, daughter of the late Hattie Larrimore and Percy Frederick Bowers.
She was a self-employed seamstress. Mrs. Whitlock was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Seaford, and a lifetime member and past president of the ladies auxiliary, Virgil Wilson VFW Post 4961, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Earl Whitlock, in 2000; a brother, Alton Bowers; two sisters, Jane Phillips and Charlene Tubbs; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Lord Ellingsworth.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Fred L. Ellingsworth of Laurel, and Vernon R. Jr. and Barbara Ellingsworth of Millsboro; a sister, Ann Wingate of Laurel; three grandchildren, Scott Ellingsworth, Jessica Hudson and Noell Warren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, in Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier.

George R. Canavan, 89, of Lewes, formerly of Long Island, N.Y., passed away Saturday Aug. 4, 2007 at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mr. Canavan was born December 16, 1917 in Woodhaven, N.Y. to the late Robert and Rose Snow Canavan. He was a retired lineman for the New York Telephone Company. Mr. Canavan was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army.
He served as the captain of the Rescue and Emergency Squad of the Roosevelt Fire Department on Long Island.
George was a member of Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church in Oak Orchard, the Knights of Columbus where he was a past grand nnight, a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Conference and a member of American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Theodora Bartkus Canavan; a son George R. Canavan Jr. and his wife Linda; a daughter Marie Casazza and her husband Gene; a brother John Canavan; a sister Florence Canavan; four grandchildren, Andrew, Todd, Michael and Devon; two great-grandchildren, Kieran and Kaelyn; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church where friends may call after 10 a.m. in the church.

Victoria Torres-Morales, 91, of Georgetown and formerly of Puerto Rico, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at home.
Mrs. Torres-Morales was a retired domestic laborer.
She was a devout Roman Catholic and was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Guananilla, Puerto Rico. She was a devoted mother, loved to sew and loved flowers. She was close to, loyal to and loved her neighbors.
She was also a very protective lady who raised four children whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by two sons, José Onel Rodriguez-Torres in 1991 and Paschal Rafael Rodriguez-Torres in 1993.
She is survived by two sons, Edwin Rodriguez of Puerto Rico and Aladino “Cookie” Rodriguez and his wife Kandy of Georgetown; two sisters, Eloisa Torres of Pennsylvania and Porforia Torres-Morales of Florida; five grandchildren, Rafael, Aladino Jr., Linsay Jo, Robert and Jason; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007 at Millsboro Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8 at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro.

Donald E. Monigle
restaurateur
Donald E. Monigle, 78 of Rehoboth Beach and Stuart, Fla., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at his home in Rehoboth Beach. His loving family and faithful dog, Monk, were with him.
After graduating from Christ Our King, Archmere Academy and the University of Delaware, Mr. Monigle served in the United States Air Force.
The DuPont Company in Wilmington employed him. In 1956, he was transferred to the company’s New York office. The Monigle family moved to Short Hills, N.J. where their children were raised and Mr. Monigle was active in the community. He assisted in various creative endeavors, particularly enjoying his work with the Millburn/Short Hills Fourth of July Committee and directing and producing “Fun Nights” at The Racquets Club along with his wife and close friends.
Frequent visits to Florida led the Monigles to settle on its East Coast for the winter months. Mr. Monigle’s lifelong passions for sailing, motor boating and saltwater fishing were further satisfied in Ft. Lauderdale and Stuart where the family set up seasonal homes. Mr. Monigle’s love of the Delaware beaches began when he vacationed there as a young boy. His family visited their cottage in Rehoboth Beach each year for vacation, and in 1979, they relocated from New Jersey to the beach where Mr. Monigle created a thriving restaurant business. The Waterfront and Coconuts Restaurants developed from his desire to lead an active and creative professional life on the edge of the Rehoboth Bay.
Following his retirement in 2000, Mr. Monigle continued to advise his family in the operation of the business and provide his vision to a variety of projects. He was a lifetime member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church. Best known as a devoted husband, concerned father, proud grandfather and amused great grandfather, he will be forever missed.

Barbara R. Spicer, 73, of Elkton, Md., and formerly of Newark, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington.
Mrs. Spicer was born in Chester, Pa. on Feb. 25, 1934 to the late Luther E. and Ada P. Hendricks and had been a mail clerk for the Bank of New York in Newark. Mrs. Spicer was a member of the Wesleyan Church of Newark for more than 40 years and had been an avid bingo player. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Spicer was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Spicer, Jr., who died in 1974; her brother, Earl and sisters, Nicki and Grace.
She is survived by her children, Charles H. Spicer III and his wife, Betty of Newark, Sandra L. Biggers of Elkton, Md. and Robert A. Spicer and his wife, Carlena of Newark; brother, Claude A. Hendricks and his wife, Pat of Claymont; sister, Anna Mae Morengo and her husband, Jesse of Lewes; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, Minquadale, New Castle, where friends may call after 10 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.

Shirley A. Friend, 71, a lifelong resident of Lewes, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007 at her home.
Mrs. Friend was born in Lewes on Feb. 24, 1936 to the late Thorton and Edith (Simpler) Hudson. She was a bookkeeper for Pep-Up in Georgetown.
Shirley loved cooking and being around her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Hudson, Ken Hudson and Charles Hudson.
She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Colin C. Friend; two sons, George Hadder and his wife Tammy of Lewes and William Hadder of Lewes; a daughter Linda A. Hadder of Lewes; a brother Bill Hudson and his wife Edna of Milton; a granddaughter Amanda Rogers and her husband Ken of Georgetown; two grandsons, George K. James Ernest “Baby James” Finney Sr., 62, of Millsboro, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Finney was born in Millsboro, son of the late James Henry and Mary Harmon Finney.
He was a retired truck driver, having worked for Townsend’s for 25 years and S&R Distributors for 10 years. He was currently an employee of Stockley Center, on medical leave.
He was a loving man, a loving father, a loving grandfather and a loving friend. He was a wonderful singer and a member of Bible Church of Christ in Dagsboro.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ethel Collins Finney; two sons, James E. Finney Jr. and his wife Celestine of Columbia, S.C. and Darrus Finney of Millsboro; three daughters, Delia Hall and her husband Timothy of Millsboro, Jacqueline Hudson and her husband William of Selbyville and F. Melody Edme of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, Robert Mannings of Dover and Simon Mannings of Millsboro; a sister, Joann Thompson o f Millsboro; a godson, Julian Coffee; and two special aunts, Jennie “Tinky” Hitchens and Blanche “Sickie” Miller; eight grandchildren, Timothy, Tempestt, William III, Mylez, Ashia, Jameelah, James III and Darneeka; a great-grandchild, Tyleia; and a host of nieces and nephews.

James Burl Cunningham, 64, of Rehoboth Beach, and Palm City, Fla., died suddenly on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born Sept. 19, 1942 in Morrilton, Ark., son of the late Archie Ray and Wanda Mae (Hill) Cunningham.
Mr. Cunningham worked in the real estate industry all of his adult life, primarily as a developer. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Centennial Lodge 174 AF & AM, Upper Marlboro, Md. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1960 and served his country for four years. After leaving the service he went to college, ultimately earning an MBA from the University of Maryland.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sheryl J. (Marshall) Cunningham; his son, Jason B. Cunningham; his daughter, Angela B. Cunningham; a brother Sherman Cunningham; and half-siblings Cecil Warren, Dale Warren, and Linda McIntyre. He is survived also by a loving mother-in-law Ruth Marshall; and in-law family Becky and Ken Moser, Megan Moser, Allison Moser, and Courtney Moser. Many other relatives in Ohio, Arkansas, and California and in particular, close friends Jack and Lisa Daggett, mourn his passing, as well. He was adored by his dogs Addison, Mousse and Duncan.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private. Masonic services will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Beatrice H. Thomas, 90, of Lewes, and formerly of Delmar, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007 at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
She was born July 10, 1917 in Wilmington, daughter of the late John and Lillian Hurd Heller.
Beatrice was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Salisbury. She began her nursing career as an LPN at the former Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury and retired from Salisbury Nursing Home after many years of service. She loved her work in nursing and served as past president and vice president of the LPN Nurses Association. After retirement, Mrs. Thomas resided in Pine Bluff Village in Salisbury where she enjoyed time with her friends and neighbors. She was a wonderful cook and loved to sew and read.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Hamblin and a grandchild.
She is survived by her loving family, three daughters, Yvonne “Bonnie” Balcerski and her husband, Ed of Millsboro, Beverly Wilson and her husband, Jimmie of Delmar, and Barbara Taylor and her husband, Seth of Palm City, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street, Delmar. Following the visitation, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Delmar. Interment will follow the services at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna.

Anna E. “Nana” Bassett, 77, of Dagsboro, passed away on Thursday Aug. 2, 2007 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
She was born in Perkiomenville, Pa., daughter of the late, William and Margaret (Surgeoner) Phillips. She was a homemaker and antique dealer.
“Nana” loved raising children even though they were not her own and she loved nature and farm animals.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent E. Bassett in 1997.
She is survived by a stepson, Gary Troike and his wife Kathy; two daughters, Melody A. Hudson and her husband Richard, Robin Lynn West and her husband Greg; five brothers, William Phillips, Robert Phillips, Harlin Phillips, Ronald Phillips, and Dennis Phillips; two sisters, Marea Olsen and Sharon Townsend; four grandchildren, Kim Frey, Chris Hudson, Laurier Binet and Kim Campbell; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Boesch, Katelyn Frey and Briar Rose Binet.
Services were held at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Frankford. Interment was in the Phillips Family Cemetery in Campbelltown, Md.

Edward Burke Fritz, 74, of Lewes, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born Jan. 10, 1933 in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Maurice and Marie W. (Fisher) Fritz.
Mr. Fritz was a graduate of Haverford Boys High School, class of 1951, Haverford, Pa. He also graduated with a bachelor of science degree in economics, class of 1958, from Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. He worked for 20 years with United Technologies Corporation, Connecticut Division of Pratt & Whitney, and with Sikorsky Aircraft retiring in 1989. He also served his country from 1954 to 1957 as a 1st Lieutenant with the 105th Bomber Squad Tactical Unit, USAF.
Mr. Fritz loved to garden, cook, play golf, and dine on French cuisine. He taught all his children to love the ocean.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Edward Fritz Jr., his daughter-in-law, Lucinda McKee and his sister-in-law, Mary Demato.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann Fritz; three daughters, Karen Skarlatos and her husband Leo of Romania, Stephanie Fritz of Bishop, Calif., and Kathleen Fritz and her husband David Grigsby of Guilford, Conn.; four grandchildren, Christine McKee, Heather Fritz, Alessandra Skarlatos and Nikolas Skarlatos; a brother and sister-in-law: David and Mary O’Brien Fritz of Millsboro and a brother-in-law, William Sheridan Jr. of Pennsauken, N.J.

Bill Nickle, 66, formerly of Willingboro, N.J., and last residing in Rehoboth Beach, passed away suddenly July 25, 2007, of complications relating to degenerative heart disease.
He was born Nov. 28, 1940. He graduated from The Haverford School, Haverford, Pa. in 1958 and from Duke University in North Carolina in 1962. In college, he was an accomplished dancer and choreographer in charge of nearly all major theatrical productions during his stay at Duke. He worked at Arthur Anderson for many years, but the onset of numerous major medical problems left him all but incapacitated. He turned his pain and misfortune into an uncanny ability to help others and gathered a legion of friends over the years.
An active participant as a Big Brother to HIV-AIDS victims, he was well respected and loved by many in his communities both in New Jersey and Delaware.
He will be missed by his brothers, David and his three sons, Eric, Dylan and Brian and his brother Norman and his daughter Merisa, his companion, Sean Quigley and by numerous close friends. He will also be missed by his adopted family, David and Helen Rogers, and their son, Eric Django and daughters, Cinnamon, Ariel and Adeline.
An informal memorial get-together is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19, at his former residence in Willingboro, N.J. Arrangements by Short Funeral Services, Milton.

Vincent E. Fenick, 84, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at home.
Mr. Fenick was born July 11, 1923 in Coaldale, Pa., to the late Vincent and Catherine Horack Fenick.
Mr. Fenick was the owner/operator of Mother Goose Dairyland in Leighton, Pa. for 12 years until he retired in 1986. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He and his wife loved to vacation by the water and their vacations always involved ships. He was a quiet and gentle man who was extremely devoted to his wife; they were inseparable.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Fenick, in 1968.
Mr. Fenick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia (Jean) Leininger Fenick, a son, John Fenick of Reading, Pa.; and a grandson, Shane Fenick.
Services were held at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, with burial scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7, at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt, N.J.

Linda Louise Lecates Haughey, 60, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at home, surrounded by her family.
Linda was born June 28, 1947, in Salisbury, Md., daughter of the late Robert and Evelyn Beach Lecates.
She grew up in Milford and Newark, graduating from Newark High School with the class of 1965. She graduated from the University of Delaware in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and later completed her masters degree in biology education.
Her teaching career spanned 29-plus years. She taught middle school science at H.B. DuPont Middle School in Hockessin, Laurel Middle School and lastly at Milton Middle School, which she retired from in 2002.
Linda participated on many local and state education committees. She was honored to be a Christa McAuliffe Fellow and to be appointed to the governor’s task force on the use of technology in all education classrooms.
She was very proud of her husband, Bill, and their children’s accomplishments - daughter JB, an occupational therapist; daughter Shelby, a clinical research manager; and son Cameron, an environmental scientist.
One of Linda’s favorite pastimes was spending hours when she could at the beach, enjoying the tranquility and the sights and sounds of the seashore.
She bonded closely with her three sisters and their families and will be greatly missed by many friends and extended family.
Linda is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, William P. “Bill” Haughey Jr.; two daughters, Jacolyn “JB” Haughey of Millsboro, and Shelby Haughey and her husband Richard Miller of West Chester, Pa.; a son, William Cameron Haughey of Angola; three sisters and four brothers-in-law, Dolly and Edward Berwick of Milford, Jackie and Richard Jester of Dover, Debbie and Wade Johnson of Laurel and Randy Haughey of Daytona Beach, Fla.; her mother-in-law, Marian C. Van Es of Millsboro; her beautiful grandson, Kai Nicholas Haughey, son of Cameron Haughey and Brett Bearden; six nieces and nephews; and three great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call any time after 11 a.m.

He owned and operated Eugene’s Mens Hair Style in Aston for many years, retiring in 1998. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Chiappetta, his brothers Anthony Chiappetta, Rudolph Chiappetta, and his half brother, Carl Pezzino. Yvon J. DuBois, 71, of Dagsboro, died Monday, July 30, 2007, at his son’s residence in Milford.
He was born on June 18, 1936, in Thetford Mines, Quebec, Canada, to the late Roland and German Groudin DuBois.
Yvon loved reading, doing puzzles, playing cards, being outdoors with nature, sunsets and living on the water. He was a man of simple tastes and he did have a feisty streak that added color to the lives of everyone that knew him.
Mr. DuBois was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War era also later serving in the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard of New York.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Eleanor A. Steen DuBois; four sons, David DuBois and his wife Twila of Milford, Glen DuBois of Berlin, Md., Ronald DuBois and his wife Kathy of Herndon, Va., and Barry DuBois and his wife Vicki of Selbyville; one daughter, Pamela Ruark of Berlin, Md., two stepdaughters, Christal Collins and her husband Barry of Rhodesdale, Md., and Tabatha Montgomery and her husband Bradley of Selbyville; one sister, Suzanne Wills of Mechanicsville, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Yvon was also survived by his darling “Kitty Blue,” his feline friend.

Mrs. Davidson was born Nov. 3, 1940, in Millville, N.J., to the late Dare Thompson Jr. and Doris Geissler Peterson.
Mrs. Davidson was a member of the Seaford Wesleyan Church, The Ark, Seaford. She was a homemaker who was totally devoted to her family and supported them through all of their activities such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts 100 percent. She also loved to cook and crochet.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter C. Peterson and Dare T. Peterson III; and a sister, Judith Ann Peterson.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, William W. Davidson Sr.; two sons, William W. Davidson Jr., and his wife Diane of Laurel and Douglas Davidson of Blades; two daughters, Doris Melson and her husband David of Seaford and Kelly Sue Dunning and her fiancée Keith Harris of Bridgeville; three sisters, Ella M. Clough of Pennsville, N.J., Lillian “Winnie” Carey of Monmouth, Ore. and Janet R.
