Chauncey L. Evans,
railroad retiree
Chauncey L. Evans, 83, of Georgetown, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Evans was born October 28, 1924 in Columbus, Ohio, son of the late Russell and Hazel Giles Evans.
Mr. Evans enjoyed a 30-year career with the Pittsburgh & Ohio Valley Railroad, retiring in 1978 as train master. He served with the U. S. Navy during World War II.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 12, Georgetown. He was Past Sachem of Nanticoke Tribe 21, Improved Order of Red Men and a member of American Legion Post 28. He enjoyed golfing and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Laverne Evans in 1995; a daughter, Betty Jane Harris; a brother, Russell Evans; and a sister, Geraldine Lueck.
He is survived by two sons, Chauncey “Buddy” Evans III of Georgetown and David Evans of Conway, S.C.; a daughter, Ida Grimsley of Roanoke, Va.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Evans of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Eugene Evans of Milton; and two sisters, Annie Chestnut and Dolores Evans, both of Pittsburgh; and a devoted friend, Katherine Hitchens of Seaford.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 N. Bedford St., Georgetown. Interment will be at Henlopen Memorial Park in Milton with military honors.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, where Masonic Services will be at 7:30 p.m.

Ellen “Louise” Gannon,
active Methodist
Ellen “Louise” Betts-Hemphill-Gannon passed peacefully into the hands of her Lord on Friday Jan. 11, 2008. She was surrounded by the love of her family at the time of her passing. Louise was born to Ellen Parker Matlack and Louder Sapp Betts of Frederica on Jan. 22, 1935.
Louise was greeted by loved ones that had passed before her, and she will be greatly missed by those who remain behind.
Louise was a lifetime member of the Frederica United Methodist Church and active in the Long Neck United Methodist Church. Louise passionately supported various children and veterans’ organizations.
Louise was many things to many people during her life. Louise was a daughter, sister, cousin, niece, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her strong spirit, warm heart, compassion, honesty, humor, poetry and love touched us all, many of us deeply.
Louise is survived by her husband of 31 years, Mitchell Robert “Bob” Gannon Jr., of Millsboro; her daughters, Eva Kay Morris, and Theresa Ellen Roberts-Biener and her husband Gregory of Millsboro; her sons, William Joseph Hemphill of Bellingham, Wash., Steven Michael Hemphill and his wife Nicole of Felton, and William Wesley Hemphill II of Millsboro; a brother, Benjamin Betts and his wife Ruth of Frederica; a sister, Naomi Tribbitt of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Ann Gannon of Millsboro; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four nieces; eight nephews; and numerous cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday Jan. 18, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Louise’s memory to, Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947; or Tunnell Cancer Center, 18941 John J. Williams Hwy, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.

Martha Melson,
ran concession stand
Martha E. Maule Melson, 64, of Bridgeville, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.
Mrs. Melson was born in Wilmington, daughter of the late James F. Jr. and Myrtle Bottomley Maule. She had lived in Bridgeville for 41 years. She and her husband had operated a traveling concession stand in Sussex County for 13 years. She enjoyed upholstery, reading, and arts and crafts and was an avid user of her computer. Mrs. Melson enjoyed raising her family and was a loving wife and mother.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Melson was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie DeFilippis.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years: Donald L. Melson Jr.; three daughters, Donna Smith, Lisa Melson and Rebecca Melson, all of Bridgeville; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, June Davis and her husband Steve, and Myrtle Cooper, all of Wilmington, and Ellen Lynam and her husband Richard of Arizona; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, James F. Maule Jr. and his wife Cathy of Millsboro, and Richard Maule and his wife Meg of Newark; four granddaughters, Amanda McCormick of Fort Stewart, Ga., Samantha Smith, Anna Melson and Courtney Melson, all of Bridgeville; and two great-grandchildren on the way.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville, with the Rev. Dale Brown officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be private at Bridgeville Cemetery, Bridgeville.

Tom Kearney,
attorney
Tom Kearney, 47, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 7, 2008 in Lewes.
He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and earned his law degree from Washington and Lee University.
Mr. Kearney was one of the partners of Abrams and Adams in Milford.
He was an active member of the community and the treasurer of the Moose Lodge in Lewes. Tom had a passion for life and was loved by all.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Kevin Kearney Jr..
Mr. Kearney is survived by his mother, Virginia Kearney of Virginia Beach, Va.; Maggie Kearney of Lewes, Beth Kearney of Virginia Beach, and Jim Kearney of Madison, N.J.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 4 p.m.

Mildred P. Thomas,
former registered nurse
Mildred E. Peterson Thomas, 64, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, in Genesis Nursing Home, Salisbury, Md.
Mildred was born in Colquitt County, Ga., on July 22, 1943, to the late Jefferson Davis and Carrie B. Clanton.
She attended Jason High School and nursing school and became a registered nurse until she sustained a back injury.
Mildred later became an employee of Allen Foods in Hurlock, Md., until she became ill, at which time she was admitted to Genesis Nursing Home.
She was a member of Greater Mount Zion Pentecostal Church in Preston, Md., where Bishop Chester Friend is the pastor.
Mildred was preceded in death by her daughter, Jackie Davis.
She leaves five children to mourn, Wanda Davis of Bridgeville, Orbb Davis Jr. of Bridgeville, Rose M. Bowe and her husband William of Ellendale, Selina O. Davis and her husband Willie of Greenwood, and Mildred Evelyn Davis of Millsboro; 12 grandchildren, Chenevera Felix, Nakeama Clayton and Mus-zak Murray, all of Greenwood, Tylisha of Salisbury, Taccora Richards of Laurel, Orbb Cannon, Marice Cannon of Bridgeville, Kim Cannon of Seaford, Donnel Murry of Denton, Md., Janota Murry of Millsboro, Tharay Davis of Long Neck, and Tomaz Davis of Milford; 28 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Davis McClenden of Seaford, and Fred Clanton of Bridgeville; three sisters, Joann Clanton of Denton, Shirley Clanton of Seaford, and Theresa Clanton of Bridgeville; one goddaughter, Malinda Hughes of Blades; one godson, Donza Nicholes of Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held in Greater Faith Church, Bridgeville, with burial in Middleford Cemetery, Middleford.

Ella E. King,
rose gardener
Ella E. King, 93, of Seaford, formerly of Georgetown, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, in LifeCare at Lofland Park.
Ella was born in Havre de Grace, Md., daughter of the late Scott and Ella Ewing Evans.
She was a nurse’s assistant in the nursery at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford, for many years and retired in 1980.
Ella enjoyed rose gardening. She was well known for sharing her beautiful roses with family, friends, neighbors and residents of local nursing homes.
She was a member of Seaford Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, Ella was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Y. King; two daughters, Amy Carrier and Ellen Pepper; a brother, Samuel Riley Evans; a sister, Hazel Stannert; and a half-brother, Walter Evans.
She is survived by three children, Norris King and Ann Messick, both of Georgetown, and Eunice Lubiniecki of Laurel; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and a half-brother, Floyd Evans of Rehoboth Beach.
It was Ella’s request that services and burial be held privately.
Instead of flowers, contributions in Ella’s memory can be made to the Salvation Army, 204 E. North St., Georgetown, DE 19947.

Maurice E. Gladden,
St. Jude handyman
Maurice Edward Gladden, 77, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born March 1, 1930 in Baltimore, Md., son of the late Maurice C. and Kathleen Anne Burns Gladden.
Mr. Gladden moved to Delaware 13 years ago from Timonium, Md. He enjoyed a 40-year career with Verizon, retiring in 1988 as an engineer. He continued to consult for Verizon for several years following his retirement. While living in Maryland, he volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America. Since moving to Delaware, he has been a much-needed handyman at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. He loved gardening, woodworking, camping, crabbing and fixing things around the house. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with and loved his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted and loving husband.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William “Willie” Gladden; and his stepson, William Cussen. He is survived by his wife of nine years, Patricia Murphy Cussen-Gladden; his son, Maurice Edward Gladden Jr. of Humble, Texas; his daughter, Deborah Gowl and her husband Michael of Humble; a stepson, Patrick James Cussen and his wife Kate of Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Debra Franey of Monticello, Ga., and Ceceilia Shannon of Royal Oak, Md.; 12 grandchildren, Stevie, Dallas and Codie Gowl, Max, Kelly and Tommy Cussen, Justin Shannon, Kristin, Jennifer, Amanda and Matthew Franey, and Rachel Poole; six stepgreat-grandchildren; his brother, John “Jack” T. Gladden and his wife Ruth of Georgetown; and his sister-in-law, Jean Gladden of Parkville, Md.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church. Interment was private at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.

Edna Miller Harmon,
Dinner Bell Inn baker
Edna Miller Harmon, 88, of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, surrounded by her loving family members.
Edna was born June 2, 1919, in Rehoboth Beach to the late Helen V. Long and William A. Miller.
She spent her entire life in Rehoboth Beach except for her stay in Dover attending Delaware State College high school for colored, then her 12th year of high school in Wilmington, graduating in the class of 1940 from Howard High School with the late Sen. Herman M. Holloway Sr.
Edna returned to Rehoboth Beach and married the love of her life, Walter W.J. Harmon, on Nov. 5, 1940. She worked more than 40 years as the lady who did all the baking at the famously known Dinner Bell Inn restaurant in Rehoboth Beach.
Edna’s church life included being a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, now Faith United Methodist Church, serving on the senior choir, WSCS and as former administrative board secretary.
Edna and her husband served as foster parents. She also served in the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the American Legion Rehoboth Post.
Everyone who entered their home was always welcome and greeted with true love. Their beliefs were strong and convictions unshakable, always giving and sharing what God had blessed them with as a blessing to others.
Edna is survived by her husband of 67 years, Walter W.J. Harmon; two sons, Waymon E. and his wife Sarah L. Harmon of Rehoboth Beach, and Wardell E. and his wife Gloria J. Harmon of Wilmington; one daughter, Waynne H. Paskins of Rehoboth Beach; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Henrietta Pierson; a sister-in-law, Edna Mae Miller; and a host of special nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at Faith United Methodist Church, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call two hours prior to service and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11. Burial will be in People’s Memorial Park. The Rev. Thomas Johnson will officiate. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Service.

Tom Kearney, 47 of Lewes, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 7, 2007, in Lewes.

Helen Ruger,
retired nurse
Helen V. Allison Ruger, 89, a 30-year resident of Rehoboth Beach, died peacefully in the presence of her family on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Ruger was born in Coatesville, Pa., daughter of the late Charles and Susan Mahoney Allison. She was a dedicated nurse who graduated from the Coatesville Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She had been a registered nurse for 50 years including 15 years at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Ruger was preceded in death by her daughter, Penney Quinney. She is survived by a son, Ken Ruger and his wife Donna of North Carolina; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jim Allison of Fl. A prayer service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow at Henlopen Memorial Park, Route 1, Milton.

Romaine H. Brodbeck,
Pennsylvania native
Romaine H. Klein Brodbeck, formerly Romaine Laird, 90, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. Mrs. Brodbeck, daughter of the late Edward H. and Rosena Stahl Klein, was born March 22, 1917, in Hughestown, Pa.
Mrs. Brodbeck moved to Delaware in 2002 from Silver Spring, Md. Mrs. Brodbeck was a lifetime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hughestown, Pa., where she was a member of the Women’s Bible Club. She was a member of the YMCA where she taught swimming, gym and sewing. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening and canning. While living in Delaware, Mrs. Brodbeck was spiritually administered to by St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ocean City, Md. During her retirement years Romaine enjoyed living at Aspenwood Independent Living, Silver Spring, and Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach.
Romaine was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved being with people and will be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Laird, in 1974, and by her second husband, Arthur Brodbeck, in 1988; four brothers, Lester, Arthur, Charles and Kenneth Klein; and one sister, Marjorie Perrotti.
She is survived by her sister, Violet Williams of Hughestown; two daughters, Barbara L. Fadden and her husband John of Fenwick Island, and Myrna L. Regardie and her husband Michael of Silver Spring; four grandchildren, Scott Fadden and his wife Melissa, Shawn Fadden and his wife Melanie, Nick Regardie and his wife Jenn, and Karen Regardie; and four great-grandchildren, Berkleigh, Gus, Max and Foster Fadden.
A memorial service will be held at noon, Friday, Jan. 11, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10301 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, Md. A graveside service will be held later in January at Memorial Shrine Cemetery, Wyoming, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Building Fund, 10301 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, MD 21842; or to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 100 Rock St., Hughestown, PA 18640.

Ashley Johnson,
former Dover resident
Ashley Laura Frazier Johnson, 21, of Evington, Va., and formerly of Dover, together with her husband, James Anthony “Tony” Johnson, died suddenly as a result of an automobile accident on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, in Lynchburg, Va.
A viewing and funeral service were held in Lynchburg for Ashley and Tony on Jan. 2, with cremation immediately following.
She was preceded in death by three grandfathers, William Mathues, Harry Umstead and Walter Frazier III; and one cousin.
Ashley is survived by their 17-month-old daughter, Brihanna Nicole Johnson; her parents, Walter and Cheryl Frazier of Delaware; two sisters, Michelle Gunn and Sharon Gunn; three grandmothers, Betty Bartholomew, Nancy Umstead and Jean Frazier; two nephews; seven aunts; seven uncles; and 17 cousins.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. A social gathering following the service will be announced. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund is being established in the name of Brihanna Nicole Johnson.

Anne Rebecca Naylor,
beloved homemaker
Anne Rebecca Pickell Naylor, 82, of Wilmington, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2008, at home.
Mrs. Naylor was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Lenoir County, N.C. She was a beloved mother and homemaker.
She is survived by a son, Drew Naylor and his wife Margaret L. of Lewes; a daughter, Robin Naylor of Wilmington; two grandchildren, Grace Naylor and Jack Naylor; a sister, Jane Stewart of Collegeville, Pa.; and a brother, Ted Pickell of Elon College, N.C. She was preceded in death by a son, William F. Naylor Jr.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 10, at R. T. Foard and Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mary Campbell Center in care of the funeral home.

Allen James Downes,
retired DelDOT driver
Allen James Downes, 65, of Georgetown, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, in LifeCare at Lofland Park, Seaford.
Mr. Downes was born in Georgetown, son of the late James and Ella Figgs Downes.
He was a truck driver for the Delaware Department of Transportation for 28 years, retiring in 1997.
Mr. Downes was a past member of Harrington Moose Lodge 534.
He enjoyed family gatherings and dinners, playing cards, watching movies, going to the slots and watching NASCAR races.
Mr. Downes was very close to his mother.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen Wadkey; a brother, Danny T. Downes; and a nephew, Gary Ray Stoeckel.
He is survived by two sisters, Sylvia Stoeckel and her husband Gerald, and Karen Adams and her husband Eric, all of Georgetown; four nephews, Larry Stoeckel and his wife Lisa, Ronald Stoeckel and his wife Kim, Kevin Stoeckel and his wife Kara, and Jamie Adams, all of Georgetown; and one niece, Jennifer Adams of Lewes.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, Georgetown. Interment was in McColley’s Cemetery, Redden.

Woodrow S. “Bootie” Smith, 52, of near Seaford, died Sunday, Continued from page 52
Jan. 6, 2007, at home.
He was born Sept. 26, 1955 in Selbyville, to Robert and Elizabeth Taylor Smith.
Mr. Smith was a maintenance mechanic for Townsend’s processing plant in Millsboro for 15 years.
He was a member of the Tabernacle of Praise in Seaford, where he served as a deacon. He loved hunting and playing the guitar. Bootie was a kind and jolly person who loved life, and he was devoted to his children.
In addition to his parents he is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Fisher of Virginia Beach, Va., and Nykia Purnell and her husband Daniel of Frankford; three stepdaughters, Katrina Rogers of Millsboro, Shareta Spencer of Delmar and Lakisha Snead of Millsboro; two brothers, Robert Smith Jr. and his wife Linda of Millsboro and Eugene Smith and his wife Michelle of Millsboro; five grandchildren, Nakayla Spencer, Leah Snead, Cornell Corbin, Hassan Corbin and Kyla Corbin; and aunts, nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Trinity Holiness Church, Delaware Avenue, Frankford, where friends may call at noon. Pastor Richard Jennings will officiate.
Burial will be in the St. John A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Bishopville, Md.

David E. Morrison,
DuPont retiree
David E. Morrison, 84, of Wilmington, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008.
Mr. Morrison was born in 1923, one of twins in Brockton, N.Y., on the shores of Lake Erie. The family moved four years later to their home village of Rushford, N.Y. The twins graduated from Rushford Central School in 1939. David attended Houghton College for three years before being drafted into World War II. Wartime service included a period in the 120th Evacuation Hospital during which time he participated in the liberation of the concentration camp at Buchenwald, Germany.
Some of his photos were donated to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.
He was married during the war years to his college sweetheart, Katherine Murch of Falconer, N.Y. Upon discharge, he finished his undergraduate degree at the University of Buffalo while working at Bell Aircraft Corp. as a production expediter. He was subsequently offered a position and taught at the University of Buffalo for five years. He then enrolled in a PhD program at Cornell University. While at Cornell he had faculty status. He eventually accepted employment at the DuPont Co. in Wilmington, where he served as a writer of corporate publications for 29 years.
In retirement, he went back to his educational career by teaching at the University of Delaware’s Academy of Lifelong Learning, continuing until his recent illness. While at the academy he served as a Shakespeare teacher for 18 years and taught more than 57 different subjects, including dramas, plays, poetry and history of the English language.
At one time he chaired the Delaware Blue-Gold football game, was president of the Delaware Foundation for Retarded Children and served on a Governor’s Commission for Nursing Home Administrators.
He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Katherine; his twin brother, Riley; and his sister, Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his eldest daughter, Bishop Susan Murch Morrison of Rehoboth Beach; son, George and wife Susan Nielson Morrison of Pittsford, N.Y.; daughter, Gwyneth Morrison Aiken and husband Kerry of Centerville, Va.; and six grandchildren, Christopher, Elizabeth and Peter Morrison, and Timothy, Erin and Benjamin Aiken. He is also survived by stepchildren, Kathleen McGee Schmitz and husband Lloyd of Lewes, and John and Mark McGee of Wilmington as well as extended family including the Rev. Dr. Mary E. Kraus of Washington, D.C., and the Rev. Jean Sutliff Young of Rehoboth Beach.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington. Interment in Rushford will be in late spring.

David E. “Hondo” Jennings Sr., 57, of Smyrna, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at home.
Mr. Jennings was born Nov. 25, 1950, in Churchville, Md., son of the late Allen R. Jennings Sr. and Dorothy Randow England.
He was a self-employed plumber/HVAC technician for several years before retiring due to disability.
Mr. Jennings was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Del-Rods and the Ghost Warriors Motorcycle Club. Mr. Jennings’ hobbies included motorcycle riding, hunting, fishing, watching Western movies and playing pool.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Allen R. Jennings Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Elaine Dyer Jennings; a son, David E. Jennings Jr. of Felton; three daughters, Tammy Mason of Smyrna, Ruth Jennings of Aston, Pa., and Sherry Treadway at home; two sisters, Molly England of Elkton, Md., and Linda Griffin of Beaver Creek, Ohio; two brothers, Kenneth Bowen of New Castle and Archie Bowen of Wilmington; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Cook of Lewes, Diana Pearce of Smyrna and Nancy Deo of Camden; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many friends and biker friends.

Joseph A. Szefler Sr., 90, of Dover and formerly of Chestnut Hill Estates in Newark, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Szefler was born in Bayonne, N.J., on March 24, 1917, a son of the late Vincent Szefler and Mary Kowalski Szefler.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he proudly served his country during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. In civilian life, he was employed with the former Getty Oil Refinery in Delaware City, retiring as a shift operator after 25 years of service. A devout Catholic, Mr. Szefler was a longtime member of Holy Family parish in Newark. He greatly enjoyed fishing and crabbing in his leisure time.
His beloved wife of 58 years, Beatrice B. Miller Szefler, died in 2000. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Adam Szefler.
He is survived by two sons, Wayne J. Szefler and his wife Connie of Dover and Joseph A. Szefler Jr. of Lewes; two brothers, John Szefler and Casmir Szefler, both of Bayonne; three sisters, Mary Rath of Bayonne, Martha Carpenter of Duncannon, Pa., and Hatty Wisnieski of Linden, N.J.; two granddaughters, Sheryl Hayes and Sandra Szefler, both of Lewes; and two great-grandchildren, Michael Kelsall and Elizabeth Polite, both of Lewes.

Edward Wilson Draine Jr., 75, of 1016 Lockett Drive, Danville, Va., died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past month.
Born Oct. 22, 1932, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Edward Wilson Draine Sr., and the late Millie Durham Draine.
Mr. Draine had lived in Virginia Beach prior to moving to Danville in 1989. He had retired from the Pepsi Cola Co., where he worked as both a route driver and a mechanic; after his retirement he worked as a driver for the Peneske Co.
He was of the Methodist faith. With his heritage being Native American, he was a current member of the Nanticoke Association.
He was first married to the late Loretta C. Carney, who died in 2001. He married Victoria “Vickie” Lee Bohannon Draine on Oct. 5, 2001.
In addition to his current wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jamie Renshaw of Edenton, N.C. and Jackie Morris of Cape Carteret, N.C.; two sons, Orville Carney of Magnolia and Mike Pope of New Castle; two stepsons, Andrew Hodnett of Buffalo, N.Y. and Robert Hodnett of Danville; two brothers, Eugene Draine of Lincoln and Philip Draine of Lancaster, Calif.; four sisters, Nancy Seeney of Lewes, Grace Jackson of Harbeson, Linda Wright and Fondella Dunmore, both of Millsboro; eight grandchildren, Shauni and J.D. Renshaw, Kristopher and Kristian Morris, Tanisha and Eddie Pope, Andrew Jr., and Andre Hodnett; and one great-granddaughter, Rylee Morris.
Services were held at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with entombment at Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach.

Thomas H. Brown III, 71, of Lewes, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington.
He was born in Asbury Park, N.J., son of the late Thomas H. Brown Jr. and Beverly McNamara Brown. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. Thomas was a retired psychotherapist working with patients at the Alcohol Treatment Center at Arlington Hospital. He also volunteered his services through the hospice program.
He is survived by his loving wife, Karen G. Cassidy Brown; stepmother, Patricia O’Regan Brown; son, Kenneth Brown; daughter, Cheryl Brown; stepson, Brian Burns; stepdaughter, Michelle Geary; brother, Michael Brown; sister, Stephanie Giunta; grandchildren, Gregory, Wesley, Savannah, Taylor, Lexi, Kyle, Connor, Brendan, Chandler and Brittany; and a niece, Valerie Thommen.

Grace Elaine McCullough Hodson Sr., 55, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2008, in Florida. She was born and raised in National Park, N.J. She worked at Independence Chemical for over 20 years. She was the wife of the late Albert J. Hodson, also of Gloucester City, N.J., where they lived for over 27 years and raised five children together.
She is survived by one son, George T. Bowe (Char); four daughters, Tina Dick (Mike), Stacey Callahan (Patrick), Nellie May Hodson (Chris), and Grace Hodson Jr. (Troy). She had 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas (Linda), Robert (Tina), and Michael McCullough (Nancy); and four sisters, her twin, Rita Unitis (Dan), who was “one minute” younger, Betty Lou Ritchie (Bud), Patricia Allen (Jack), and Theresa Mora (Dave). She is also survived by her companion of eight years, Charles Welsh, and her little buddy, Amy.
She retired to Lewes, dedicating her time to helping others through the American Legion Post 17. She received an award for helping the elderly and a letter of recognition for providing essentials to the soldiers in Iraq. She had just recently moved to Ocala, Fla., to be closer to her family.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, at St. Mary’s Church in Gloucester City, where she was a parishioner. Friends and family are welcome. Arrangements by Beyers Funeral Home, Umatilla, Fla.

Mr. Gardner was born August 5, 1938, in Chester, Pa., son of the late Nicholas S. and Helen Dewey Gardner.
Mr. Gardner was employed by Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City for 25 years, retiring as second vice president. Following his retirement in 1996, he relocated to Rehoboth Beach and worked for Megee Plumbing in Georgetown. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Vietnam war. He was a graduate of Archmere Academy in Wilmington.
He is survived by his sister, Selena Gardner of Newark.
All services are private with entombment at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

William L. Olsen, 77, of Lewes, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Mr. Olsen was formerly of Lahaska, Pa. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of Penn State University.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores York Olsen; children Marie, Paul, Kurt, Peter, Jennifer and Robert; and 12 grandchildren.

Frank A. Hopkins,
retired machinist
Frank A. Hopkins Jr., 87, of Lewes, formerly of Runnemede, N.J., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at his home.
He was born in Keene, N.H., son of the late Frank and Alice Sanderson Hopkins.
Frank graduated from high school in 1939 and then went into the U.S. Navy serving during World War II where he received several commendations. He served aboard the USS Hornet from its christening until the Japanese sank the ship in 1942. Frank then served aboard the USS Princeton until it was sunk in 1944. Mr. Hopkins then served in Corpus Christi, Texas, until his discharge in 1946.
He was a machinist for Westinghouse Electric in Lester, Pa., retiring in 1979 after 20 years of service.
Frank was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Runnemede and a lifetime member of the Runnemede Volunteer Fire Department. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed crossword puzzles, camping, traveling and making woodcrafts.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Fayette Hopkins in 1995; and a brother, Edwin Hopkins, who was killed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, aboard the USS Oklahoma.
He is survived by his children, Edwin T. Hopkins and his wife Marie of Runnemede; Faye A. Boore of Joy Beach in Lewes; Louis F. Hopkins and his wife Jean of Lewes; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and his best friend, Midget, the Jack Russell terrier.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro. Burial will be private.

Ethel was born July 5, 1914, to Joseph and Susie Draper. She was reared in Georgetown. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, John Mason; a son, Galen Mason; and a grandson, Jackie Waples.
Ethel was an active member of Bethel AME Church where she served as the Missionary Society president, member of the Stewardess Board, Lay Organization, Senior Choir and member of the Culinary Ministry.
Ethel leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Margo Hitchens of Laurel and Maxine Savage (Bobby) of Milton; three sons, Brodes Mason (Lola) of
Georgetown and Basel Mason of Milton; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a paternal uncle, Leon (Pearl) Lofland of Federalsburg, Md.; a godson, Peter John Rowley; a special caregiver, Joyce Santiago; and a multitude of nieces, nephews and friends.

Martha Ann M. Grey,

Martha Ann “Nancy” Mattern Grey, 78, a retired Philadelphia schoolteacher and longtime Wynnewood, Pa. resident, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at Lankenau Hospital of heart failure.
Mrs. Grey was born in Philadelphia June 15, 1929, to Paul Guyer Mattern Sr. and Mary Esther Myers Mattern. She graduated from Haverford High School in 1947, where she played field hockey and was a member of the National Honor Society. Four years later, she received a bachelor of science degree from the College of Human Development at Pennsylvania State University. In 1980 she received a master’s degree in education, specializing in supervision and administration, from the Bank Street College of Education in New York City.
Mrs. Grey began her career, which lasted nearly 40 years, in the Philadelphia public school system in 1953. She started as a teacher at the Crump Daycare facility, was promoted to head teacher and later to consulting teacher with supervisory responsibility for a number of preschools. Highly respected by her peers, her work was much recognized by the school administration and appreciated by the parents and children that she served. She was a member of the Day Care and Child Development Council of America and a founding member of the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children. She retired in 1991.
In 1964 she married John Todd Grey of Ardmore. The two were members of the Merion Golf Club and the Lewes Yacht Club, in both of which organizations Mrs. Grey remained active after her husband’s death in 2005. She was a devoted member of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, which she joined with her parents in 1954. She was also an enthusiastic member of Questers.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews and their families, Elizabeth Anne Mattern Acanfora, Susan Grey Troisi, Amy Grey Lanza, David B. Mattern, Christopher P. Mattern, Douglas W. Grey, and George B. Grey IV.
Funeral services were held at the chapel of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Contributions in her name may be made to the above named church at 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Dorothy M. Lindsay, 93, of Newark and Dewey Beach, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2007.
Dorothy was born in Wilmington and lived there all of her life. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling and spending time at the beach and with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, George McMahon of Rehoboth Beach, Patricia Magrogan of Jupiter, Fla., Peggy Weldin of Rehoboth Beach and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick of Newark; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Cynthia L. “Cindy” Cole, 53, formerly of Millville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at her home in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
She was born Sept. 26, 1954, in Norristown, Pa.
She was an honors graduate of Wissahickon High School and graduated cum laude from Mansfield University. She taught preschool in Seaford and Frankford over a 20-year career.
An accomplished sailor, dancer and kayaker, Cindy traveled throughout the United States and Alaska, Canada, the Caribbean and Greenland, instructing and competing in kayaking in the United States and Greenland. She and her husband Charles owned the Briar Patch/Millpond Paddler shop in Millville, where she brought joy to her customers, co-workers, neighbors and friends. More recently, Cindy devoted her time to her customers and friends in real estate in Bethany Beach.
She was a member of the Episcopal church.
Cindy was predeceased by her brother, Mark Jones.
She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Charles W. Cole; her son, Charles B. Cole and his wife Frances E. Cole; her parents, George and Rebecca Jones; a brother, Wayne Jones; a sister, Sharon Laughery; and nieces and nephews. Cindy’s courage and loving spirit will be remembered and dearly missed by her family and many friends.

James Francis Waller, 74, of Elkton, Md., and formerly of Rehoboth Beach and Salisbury, Md., passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at SunBridge Care & Rehab for Elkton in Elkton, Md.
He was born Oct. 4, 1933, in Warren, Pa., son of the late Francis J. and Evelyn G. Offerle Waller.
Mr. Waller was formerly employed as a recreation specialist at Floral Park, N.Y. He also had worked for the DeVereux Foundation in Paoli, Pa. He and his wife were foster parents to children for 25 years in New York and Delaware. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Andrew J. Waller in October 1994, and his brother Joseph J. Waller in November 1982.
He is survived by his wife, Donna T. Van Velsor Waller of Lewes; two daughters, Evelyn T. Waller of Newark and Dona’ M. Hill and her husband Michael of Mechanicsville, Va.; a son, Kevin M. Waller of Newark; a sister, Joyce Waller of Hampton Bay, N.Y.; and a brother, William A. Waller and his wife Lucille of Murrells Inlet, S.C.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, Lewes. Interment was in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Lewes.

Virginia Carol Yetman,
retired bank manager
Virginia Carol Thames Yetman, our beloved wife, mother, sister and daughter, ascended into Heaven peacefully at her home in Pinewater Farm, Harbeson, with her family by her side on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007.
Carol was a friend to all and meant so much to everyone. She was an active woman who loved gardening, walking daily and playing the piano. Carol and Dave enjoyed traveling across the country in their motor home. Carol also loved to spend time with her three grandchildren - she was the perfect grandmother.
Carol is survived by her husband of 42 years, David F. Yetman; they married in 1966. Carol and her husband moved to England where they lived serving the Department of Defense for almost six years. Upon returning to the States, they moved to Maryland where Carol was a bank manager. Through that career, Carol made many friends in the community. After retirement, Carol and Dave moved to Delaware. Carol then went to work in the Cape Henlopen School District office and the high school office prior to becoming ill.
In addition to her husband, Carol is survived by her daughter, Amanda Ludwig and her husband Bill and their two children, Colin and Olivia, all of Arizona. She also has a son, Steve Yetman and his wife Tiffany and their child Anna, all of Maryland. She is also survived by her mother, Drunetta Hammack of Alabama, two brothers, Charles Thames of Indiana, and the Rev. James Otis Thames of Alabama. Carol’s best friend is her sister Sara who resides in Alabama with her husband Stan Achimon.
A memorial service was held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, with entombment private in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

John Edward Kiker Jr.,
Southern Bell retiree
John “Jack” Edward Kiker Jr., 77, of Milton, died suddenly on Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, in Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
He was born on June 5, 1930, in Germantown, Pa., the only son of John E. Kiker Sr. and Mary Wilchinsky.
Jack spent the early part of his life living in Danboro, Pa., and graduated from the original Doylestown High School. Upon graduation, he entered the Air Force and served proudly as a radio transmitter in Germany. After ending his tour of duty, Jack returned to Danboro and was employed with Bell of Pennsylvania, where he worked throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties as a cable repairman.
In 1974, he and his wife Renee moved to Flagler Beach, Fla., where Jack was employed with Southern Bell until his retirement. Then Jack became an independent contractor, still working on telephone repair service, and that was what brought him to Milton in 1990. He finally retired from all work at the age of 65. He and Renee enjoyed several years of traveling in their camper seeing most of Delmarva.
Jack was a life member of the VFW and was commander while living in Florida. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 28, and enjoyed many
evenings losing at their casino nights. He also enjoyed many of their Sunday morning breakfast meetings. Most of Jack’s volunteer time was at the Lewes-Rehoboth Moose Lodge. He served several positions of office including the position of governor. He helped Renee in the kitchen washing dishes and filling the coffee pots. He had many friends there. Jack was loved and admired by many people and he will be sadly missed. A few weeks before Jack died he decided he wanted to join the Elks Lodge; when asked why he needed yet another membership, his answer was, “I have met a lot of lovely people who are Elks members and play on the shuffleboard team, and I just want to be one of them.“ That was not on God’s plan though, as he was taken within less than a month of becoming a member.
He is survived by his wife, Renee Tazey Kiker of Milton; a son, John Edward Kiker III and his wife Barbara of Perkasie, Pa.; a daughter, Beverly Ann Kiker of Milton; and a son, Christopher Alan Kiker and his wife Dawn of Ellendale; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, at Ellendale U.M. Church, Main Street, Ellendale. Interment will be private at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
Refreshments will be served at the Ellendale Firehouse following the church service.
In lieu of flowers, Jack would be happy for donations to be made to Ellendale U.M Church, Sunday School Room Fund, P.O. Box 193, Ellendale, DE 19941.

Linden M. Harmon,
retired HVAC mechanic
Linden M. Harmon, 49, of Millsboro, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at home.
He was the son of the late Parker and Fedora Harmon.
Linden was a member of the Indian Mission United Methodist Church of Millsboro, and was also a member of the Nanticoke Indian Association. He was a master carpenter making beautiful fine furniture. He was a state employee retiring from the Stockley Center as an HVAC mechanic.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald W. Harmon, Leonard A. Harmon and Roger S. Harmon.
He is survived by his children, Leonard Durham Harmon of Richmond, Va., and Melissa E. Wilson of Tulsa, Okla.; and his brothers, Joseph and wife Luisa Harmon of Georgetown and Gregory L. Harmon of San Francisco, Calif.
Services were held at Indian Mission United Methodist Church, Millsboro, with interment private.

Ed Grimshaw,
Jefferson Award winner
We joyously celebrate the rich and long life of Ed Grimshaw, 90, of Millsboro and recently Plattsburgh, N.Y., where he resided with family for the past year. He passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007.
Ed was born in 1917 near the Canadian border in Champlain,

N.Y. He spent much of his career as a store manager with Agway Inc., retiring from the Middletown location after nearly 50 years of service. He never missed a day of work in his life.
He led an active and energetic social life, and made many friends along the way in his memorable life journey. He is remembered for his commitment to community leadership and volunteerism, for which he received the Jefferson Award for public service. He enjoyed dancing, traveling, playing cards, casino trips, bowling and playing shuffleboard. He loved being with his longtime friends at the Indian River Senior Center in Millsboro and new friends at the Senior Center in Plattsburgh.
We will never forget his quick smile, charm, humor and love of storytelling, including his incredibly accurate memory for dates and details.
In July 2007, he celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by 80 friends and family from across the country with a surprise party in New York. Thanks to Gerri Dumesnil for her efforts in organizing this surprise, which gave him much joy and many happy memories at the end of his life.
He was predeceased by his 12-year companion, Helen Kiesel, and previously by his wife of 30 years, Joyce Dumas Grimshaw. His memory is held dear by his daughter, Kynda Annable and her husband John, stepdaughter Jayla Boire, and sister Theresa Boire.
A Memorial Mass was held at Mary Mother of Peace, Oak Orchard, followed by a luncheon reception at the Georgia House, Main Street, Millsboro.

Shirley K. Godfrey,

Shirley K. Godfrey, 72, of Milton since 1998, and formerly of Reading, Pa., went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, with her husband and children at her side, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Shirley was born in New Holland, Pa., daughter of the late Charles R. and Kathryn E. Kratz Keiser.
She was the shoe department manager and buyer for Rubinson’s Department Store, in New Holland, for nine years, retiring in 1978. Shirley was also resident manager from 1963 to 1969 at Spring Gulch Campground, also in New Holland.
Shirley was founder of the Girl Scout and Brownie Troops in the Welsh Mountain area of Pennsylvania.
She enjoyed crafting.
Shirley was a former member of the Zion U.C.C. Church in Reading and after moving to Milton, became a member of Grace Church. Shirley loved worshipping the Lord.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, Levi “Lee” Godfrey; nine children, the Rev. Terry L. and wife Linda (Rohrer) Blessing of Lancaster, Pa., Charles E. “Ed” and wife Kathy (Baker) Blessing of Stevens, Pa., Vicky L. Stanley of East Earl, Pa., Wanda K. James Ronald “Jim” Fraser, 74, passed from this earthly life on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007. James was the only child born to James Angus and Elizabeth Fraser on June 4, 1933, in Queens, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956, spending a tour of duty in Japan during the Korean War. Jim was a longstanding member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Succasunna, N.J. Jim, a glazier by trade, joined his parents working at Denville Glass Company in Denville, N.J., in 1956. He retired as its owner in 1996 after 40 years of dedicated service. Upon retiring and moving to Dagsboro, Eleanor and James became active members of Community Lutheran Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor, and two daughters, Joyce Fraser and Janet Schneider. Also surviving are Amy Stewart, partner of Joyce and René Schneider, husband of Janet. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, at Community Lutheran Church in Omar. The family suggests memorial contributions to American Heart Association, 600 N. Dorothy Malinowksi,

Dorothy Malinowski of Hockessin and Rehoboth Beach passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 29, surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Catherine Joachimowski, whom she cared for in their elder years. Dorothy was a graduate of Wilmington High School. She was the lifetime business partner and office manager for her husband’s dental practices in Greenville and Lewes. Dorothy was a member of the University and Whist Club, Rehoboth Beach Country Club and Lewes Yacht Club. She served as a delegate to the women’s auxiliary of the American Dental Association and president of the Delaware chapter. She was also the first secretary of the DENPAC political organization as well as a member of the Memorial Hospital Junior Board. Dorothy enjoyed boating and fishing, and was a gifted painter. Dorothy will be dearly missed by her husband, Dr. Andrew S. Malinowski, son Andrew, daughter-in-law Meghan and grandson Andrew IV. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville. Interment will be private. Josephine Norma Hill Holt, 57, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
She was born March 14, 1950, in Milford, daughter of the late Joseph Hill and Beatrice Ziegenfuss Hill of Lewes, formerly of Georgetown.
Mrs. Holt was raised in Georgetown and married right out of high school Dec. 21, 1968, to her husband of 39 years. Early on, she worked at Henry’s Restaurant in Georgetown, Dresco Clothing Factory in Lewes and Old Salt Seafood. For the last 30 years, she worked in the dietary department at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. She loved gardening and was a firm believer in recycling. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her beloved husband Gilbert E. Holt; two sons, Gilbert Edward Holt Jr. of Nassau, and Geoffery Tyler Holt of Rehoboth Beach; her daughter, Gloria Elaine Holt of Lewes; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; her brother, Melvin Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 31, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with Pastor Charlie Arnold officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to services. Entombment will be at Bethel Methodist Mausoleum in Lewes.

Robert D. Wriston,
Delmarva Power retiree
Robert D. Wriston, 70, of Millsboro, son of Nanny Beatrice Arthur Wriston and Clyde Osington Wriston died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at Lewes Convalescent Center in Lewes. Mr. Wriston was born in Beckley, W.Va., and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He loved to sing and excelled with his talent, winning television and radio competitions. After moving to Delaware, he joined the Wilmington Brandywiners musical group where he sang in the musical “The Student Prince.” He was employed by Delmarva Power as a power equipment operator, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Mr. Wriston was preceded in death by four sons, Steven, Ralph, Rodger and Russell.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia Smith Wriston; two daughters, Robin Wriston of West Grove, Pa., and Shannon Crockett of Seffner, Fla.; one son, Robert A. Wriston of Ocean City, Md.; a sister, Linda Hicks of Alabama; two brothers, Richard of Beckley, W.Va., and Neal of Ohio; three granddaughters, Jessica Grenier of Newark, and Bailey and Mackenzie Crockett of Seffner; and a grandson, Shaun Wriston of Millsboro.
Robert is in the hands of our Lord and at peace. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Services will be private.

William E. Hubbard,
retired from Penn Fibre
William Eugene Hubbard, 66, of Georgetown died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, after a long illness.
Mr. Hubbard was born in Dayton, Ohio, son of the late Eugene Thomas Hubbard and Chris Pennington Seivers.
He began his career working as a commercial drapery salesperson for Milford Stitching.
Mr. Hubbard left Milford Stitching to open his own shoe repair business known as Bill’s Shoe Repair, with three locations in Milford, Rehoboth Beach and Georgetown.
He owned the business for eight years before closing and going in as a partner with J.V. Industrial Machine Shop, Milford, which he operated for 10 years.
Mr. Hubbard left J.V. Industrial Machine Shop to work as a maintenance supervisor at Penn Fibre, Greenwood. Penn Fibre was one of the two largest plastics manufacturing plants in the world. Mr. Hubbard retired in 2007 after 10 years at Penn Fibre.
He was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church, Milford, and was a member of the Delaware Bass Federation, where he served as president for eight years.
Mr. Hubbard was also instrumental in developing and starting the first youth bass fishing team to include both boys and girls, known as the Junior Bass Fishermen.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hubbard was preceded in death by two sons, Billy Hubbard, in 1990, and Ted Hubbard, in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Kathy Hubbard; a son, Chris Hubbard of Camden-Wyoming; two brothers, Dennis Hubbard and his wife Pat of Georgetown and Chuck Hubbard and his wife Judy of Dayton; a sister, Brenda Boone of Florida; and two granddaughters, Morgan and Juliette Keesic.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 3, in the Reformation Lutheran Church, 613 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may visit with the family one hour prior.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a charity of choice.

Leroy ‘Lee’ Fooks,
DuPont retiree
Leroy “Lee” Fooks, 85, of Seaford passed away Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2007, in Lifecare at Lofland Park. He was born in Baltimore, son of the late Wilbur and Nellie Jump Fooks. Lee proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He retired from the E.I. DuPont Co., Seaford, after 35 years of service as a powerhouse electrician. He was a past master and treasurer of the Hiram Lodge 21, Seaford, and a past patron member of the O.E.S. chapter 7. Lee was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Laurel and a member of American Legion Post 6 in Seaford. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jacqueline Fooks of Seaford; sons, the Rev. Eric L. Fooks and his wife Ruth of California City, Calif., and Rodney T. Fooks and his wife Gail of Laurel; his grandchildren, Brian Fooks and his wife Nicole of Delmar, David Fooks of Lewes, Kevin Fooks and his fiancee Diana Hitch of Laurel, Lisa Bell and her husband Randy of Hamburg, N.Y., and Chandra Maradeo and her husband Greg of Vineland, N.J.; and his great-grandchildren, Derrick and Caden Fooks, Shana Adams, Trevor Banegas and Isabella Maradeo and Jacob and Lucas Bell. Janis L. Creswell,
enjoyed aviation
Janis L. Creswell, 46, of Winter Haven, Fla., passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, in her summer residence in Bethany Beach. She was born Oct. 27, 1961, in Silver Spring, Md., to Richard and Shirley Creswell.
Janis grew up in Kemp Mill Estates, Md., where she attended Northwood High School. She was always involved in many activities and was captain of the cheerleaders before graduating in 1979.
In 1984, Janis graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in health/physical education/recreation. She minored in theater. That same year she won first place in the D.C. Ms. Metro bodybuilding contest.
Janis was later employed by the Ocean City [Md.] Health and Racquet Club and Ocean City Parasail. She modeled over the years for the famous palette artist Howard Behrens.
Moving to Orlando, Fla., in 1986, Janis became a talent agent for many television shows and movies filmed in Florida, including “America’s Most Wanted,” “Unsolved Mysteries,” “Lethal Weapon III” and “Swamp Thing.”
In 1990, she worked as a casting assistant at Universal Studios, where she was involved in the production of numerous syndicated television series and major feature films. In 1994, Janis returned to her parents’ home in Maryland for intensive cancer treatments at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
In the ensuing years, even while undergoing periodic cancer treatments, her spirits were always high and she never wavered from her love of life.
She became interested in aviation, and was employed by Suburban Airport in Laurel, Md. Janis earned her private pilot’s license in 1995.
In 1999, Janis, with her father Richard, moved to Winter Haven, where she continued to enjoy flying and volunteering her time at the Spring Haven Assisted Living facility. In the summer months, she lived at Middlesex Beach, Bethany Beach and volunteered at Brandywine Assisted Living in Lewes. She also devoted time to reading to the blind at the South Coastal Library in Bethany Beach.
Ms. Creswell was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley L. Creswell, in 1996.
She is survived by her father, Richard N. Creswell; sister, Kathleen Ann Grundhoefer (Glen); nephews, Shane and Jeffrey Grundhoefer; uncles, Robert and George Creswell; aunt, Betty Creswell; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 31, in the Bethany Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, West Avenue, Ocean View, where friends may call after noon.
Interment will be in Mariner’s Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Janis’ memory to Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Richard J. Turner,
master mechanic
Richard J. Turner Sr. 54, of Lewes, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
He was born Oct. 3, 1953, in Wilmington, son of the late Charles E. and Elizabeth Jane Williams Turner.
Mr. Turner and his wife moved to Sussex County in 1987. Mr. Turner worked for the state of Delaware as a master mechanic covering all of Kent and Sussex counties. He was a member of Newport Masonic Lodge Unity #32. He loved to fish, hunt and camp. He was also a Corvette car buff. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sheila DiSanto.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Carolyn T. Sekscinski Turner; two sons, Kevin L. Turner and his wife Lara, and Richard James Turner Jr., all of Millsboro; a daughter, Holly J. Turner of Lady Lake, Fla.; a stepson, Jeffrey DePrisco of Wilmington; two grandchildren, Nicole Turner and Richard J. Turner III; a brother, Charles E. Turner Jr. of Lewes; and his mother-in-law, Rose Sekscinski of Lewes.
All services are private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Enterprises Inc., Lewes.
