Elizabeth L. Brunner,
music teacher
Elizabeth L. Brunner, 92, of Manor Care Nursing Facility, Pike Creek, Wilmington, and formerly of Delmar, N.Y., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008.
Mrs. Brunner was the wife of the late Raymond A. Brunner; daughter of George M. and Sadie Paris Loy; sister of the late Ruth Loy and the late Sarah Gay; sister of retired U.S. Navy Capt. William W. Loy of Jacksonville, Fla.; mother of Sally C. Brunner of Lewes and Patricia B. Bois of Medfield, Mass.; grandmother of Robert P. Bois II, Nicole B. Bruton and Aimee L. Bois; and great-grandmother of Quinn P. Bruton and Jillian B. Bruton.
Mrs. Brunner graduated from Syracuse University. She was a homemaker, taught music lessons and was an avid gardener and flower arranger. She was active in her church, Westminster Presbyterian in Wilmington, where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the national sorority Alpha Chi Omega and was active in Panhellenic events.
Services will be private. Memorials in her name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Delaware chapter, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.

John C. Bradley,
World War II veteran
John C. Bradley, 83, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Christiana Hospital surrounded by family.
Born in Wilmington, Mr. Bradley was the son of the late Anthony and Helen Harkins Bradley. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Pacific Theatre as a tail gunner on the PBY rescue planes.
He worked in carpet sales at Bayard Co. until his retirement. After moving to the beach, he worked part time for First State Community Action Agency in the Families Connected Division. During the late 1960s, he owned and operated the Hi-Ho Tavern. He was a member of Mary, Mother of Peace Church and was a former member of Holy Spirit Church. He was also a member of the Big Band Society in Rehoboth Beach. An avid golfer, he belonged to the TGA Group. He was also a huge fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, the Philadelphia Phillies and Notre Dame football.
Mr. Bradley is survived by his daughters, Coleen Bradley of Kenilworth, N.J., and Susan M. Bradley of Wilmington; his sons, Michael A. of Rehoboth Beach, J. Patrick and James F., both of Wilmington; and three grandchildren, Jack, Eileen and Dennis. Also surviving is his brother, Francis Bradley of Newark.
Friends and family are invited to visitation from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 15, at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Wilmington. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 2505 Centerville Road, Wilmington. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Florence E. Reed,
avid china painter
Florence E. Reed, 90, of Chestertown, Md., formerly of Middletown, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Chester River Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chestertown.
Mrs. Reed was born July 31, 1917, in Townsend, to the late Wilbur S. and Rachel Burge Waters.
She graduated from Galena High School and attended Goldey-Beacom College.
Mrs. Reed worked as a business partner with her late husband on a farm near Middletown.
She was active in the Townsend Home Demonstration Club and was an avid china painter.
Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by her husband, Millard F. Reed; and a son, Donald R. Reed.
She is survived by a son, Millard F. Reed Jr. of Chestertown; a daughter, Joan R. Crowley of Rehoboth Beach; five grandchildren, William Reed and his wife Ruth, Robin May, Jonathan Reed and his wife Jane, Griffith Reed and his wife Kelly, and Hunter Reed; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Immanuel Methodist Church, 209 W. Main St., Townsend, DE 19734.

Parker E. Failor,
Graves employee
Parker E. Failor, 71, of Lewes, passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loved ones Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008.
He was born August 19, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Parker P. and June Elizabeth Sweeney Failor.
Mr. Failor relocated to Delaware 60 years ago. He enjoyed a long career with Acme food stores working both in the states of Pennsylvania and Delaware.
He then worked for Graves Uniforms in Lewes for 20 years. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a regular “Jack of All Trades.” He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan Ingram Failor; two daughters, Iva Jane Fagan and husband Luke of Rehoboth Beach, and Christine McCarty of Lewes; and one granddaughter, Ragen McCarty of Lewes.
There will be a graveside committal at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 15, at Henlopen Memorial Park, Route 1, Milton. Pastor Larry Wanaselja will be officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Enterprises, Inc., Lewes.

Samuel L. Quinn,

Samuel L. Quinn, 87, of Lewes, formerly of Middletown Township, Pa., passed away at his residence Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008
He was born on March 3, 1920, in Chester, Pa., son of the late Thomas L. Quinn and Myrtle Sellers Quinn.
Mr. Quinn retired as an electrician in 1987 from B P Refinery in Trainer, Pa., after 35 years of service in the petroleum industry. He was an avid golfer and member of Shawnee Country Club in Milford.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rose (MacDonald) Quinn of Lewes; a daughter, Maureen Quinn of Arlington, Va.; two sisters, Anna Marchlik of Milton, and Sister Thomasann of Doylestown, Pa.; and a granddaughter, Julia Ortiz of Arlington, Va.
Memorial services will be held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, with Deacon John Smith officiating.
Entombment with military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

George Lonnie Cox,

George Lonnie Cox, 62, of Ellendale, formerly of New Castle, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at home.
Mr. Cox was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Oather Edward and Gladys Ramsey Swanson, and stepson of the late Wesley L. Swanson.
He was a self-employed contractor, working in the New Castle and Wilmington areas for many years.
Mr. Cox specialized in siding, window, roof and deck work, getting most of his work by word of mouth and fine workmanship.
In his younger years, he enjoyed playing horseshoes.
Mr. Cox also liked playing pool, swimming, fishing and bowling.
He especially enjoyed playing cards, particularly blackjack, with his granddaughters, and a good game of pinochle.
Mr. Cox loved to teach people as well as tease them.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda Cox; two sons, Lonnie Cox Jr. of Ellendale, and Howard W. Cox and his wife Laura of Dover; a daughter, Glenna Cox-Hidalgo and her husband Rodel of Wilmington; two brothers, Carl H. Cox and his wife Sandra E. of New Castle, and Leon Swanson and his wife Cynthia of Avondale, Pa.; a sister, Marie Swanson of Long Neck; three granddaughters, Makailea Hidalgo, Isabelle Hidalgo and Cameron Cox; one grandson, Garrett Cox; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

David R. West, Sr., 46 of Millsboro, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008.
He was a graduate of Claymont High and was employed by General Chemical for 22 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald West.
Sadly missed by his mother, Patsy West of Millsboro; two sisters, Mary Ellen Rineer and husband Timothy of Wilmington, and Holly W. June of New Castle; two sons, David R. West Jr. and Dennis West of Claymont; a nephew, Timmy Rineer of Wilmington; best friend, Chuck Schertle; and his beloved cat, Selby. All services are private. Dorothy P. Gentry,
Wilmington homemaker
Dorothy P. Gentry, 90, of Wilmington, passed away at her home on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.
She was the only child born to the late Rose and John Pierce on May 14, 1917. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Ellsworth J. Gentry Sr., in 1984. Dorothy was a homemaker and took pride in her home. She especially enjoyed decorating at the Christmas season. Dorothy kept active and independent throughout her life until she became ill in September 2004. She enjoyed crochet and needlepoint until her eyesight failed her; and she also loved Cape May, N.J. Dorothy was an active member of Brandywine Valley Baptist Church until she became ill, could no longer drive and transportation was limited.
Her children, Dorothy G. Donovan and her husband James of Wilmington, Frederick Gentry of Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, Robert Gentry and his wife Deborah of Wilmington, daughter, Carol B. Brower and her husband Joseph of Landenberg, Pa., Douglas G. Gentry at home, and daughter-in-law, Pauline Gentry of Wilmington, survive her.
Also, 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren survive her. Besides her husband, three sons, Thomas D. Gentry, John E. Gentry and Ellsworth J. Gentry Jr. and a grandson, Ellsworth J. Gentry III, also preceded Dorothy in death. Dorothy was the caregiver for her son Douglas all of his life and at the end of Dorothy’s life, her five surviving children became her caregivers.
The family of Dorothy would like to thank the Delaware Hospice nurses and aides for their kindness and exceptional caregiving during the end of Dorothy’s life.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Feb. 14, at Brandywine Valley Baptist Church, with interment in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Margaret C. Jones,
Pantry Pride retiree
Margaret “Margie” C. Jones passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, from a prolonged illness at Brandywine Senior Care in Rehoboth Beach.
Margie Jones worked 30 years for Food Fair and Pantry Pride and resided in Randallstown, Md. For the past eight years, she resided at Brandywine Senior Care in Rehoboth Beach.
Her beloved husband, James Monty Jones, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Terry L. Jones and his partner, Joseph McNally of Rehoboth Beach; her sister, Cecilia Frank; and brothers, Francis J. and Victor Radulski.
Funeral services were held at Loring Byers Funeral Home, Randallstown, with burial in Lake View Memorial Park.

Ron Krajewski,
optical firm founder
Ron Krajewski, 61, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at his home in Rehoboth Beach. Ron worked in the optical industry for more than 40 years, beginning with Edwin Kuhwald and Co. in Wilmington. After about 15 years of service, the Lord led him to Sussex County, where he began Eastern Shore Optical Co., eventually having locations in both Rehoboth and Seaford. Ron was recognized for his excellent work in eyeglasses and contact lenses. Keeping up with the latest in technology, he held the highest of credentials - the honored fellow status - was invited to teach in many states and was frequently contacted to assist with difficult-to-fit patients. For many years, he also provided services to the DuPont Co. in Seaford for safety glasses for many people in Sussex County.
Some may remember Ron for his radio program, “Here’s Looking at You,” on WGMD with Dan Gaffney every Wednesday morning. They would discuss the latest in optics and community events, always sharing his joke of the day or an encouraging verse.
Ron felt very blessed to live in such a wonderful area and always tried to give back to his community. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Rehoboth Beach for many years, serving as chairman of the Youth Services Committee; was past president of the Parish Council for St. Edmond’s Catholic Church in Rehoboth; was appointed by then-Gov. Mike Castle to serve on the Board of Social Worker Examiners for the state of Delaware; was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 85 of Rehoboth, and attended the School of Leadership and Ministry at Eagle’s Nest Fellowship Church in Milton.
Ron loved fellowship with family and friends, telling silly jokes and playing the occasional polka on the accordion.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Kathy, of Rehoboth Beach; son Ron Jr. and his wife Kate Krajewski of Lewes; daughter Grace and her husband Albert Cosenza of Royersford, Pa.; and grandchildren Sarah and Beth Krajewski of Lewes. His brother Joseph Krajewski and his wife Edna of Wilmington also survive him. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday Feb. 22, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Burial will be private. Dona C. Villa Zalewski, 64, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. Mrs. Zalewski was born April 24, 1943, in Frostburg, Md., daughter of the late Andrew and Ann Cullen Villa.
Mrs. Zalewski moved to the beach from Rockville, Md., 11 years ago. For 29 years she worked for Safeway Food Stores in Washington, D.C., at the Georgetown location. She loved the beach, flowers, reading, playing bingo and the slot machines.
She is survived by her husband of 22 years, John M. Zalewski; a daughter, Margaret Miller and her husband Duane of Fredericksburg, Va.; three sons, Brian Turley and his wife Sharon of Urbana, Md., Steve Turley and wife Bonnie of Greensboro, Md., and John M. Zalewski Jr. and his wife Bobbiejo of Seaford; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild on the way; a brother, Adrian Villa of Cumberland, Md.; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Thibodeau and her fiance Mike Purdy of Lincoln and Maryann Wright and husband Bob of Lowell, Mass.; and a special newphe, Drew Purdy of Lincoln. Rose Montecchio,

Rose Lupinetti Montecchio, 81, of Rehoboth Beach and formerly of Lenni, Pa., died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008.
Mrs. Montecchio was born in Morton, Pa., and graduated from Media High School in 1944. She was a resident of Lenni for 48 years prior to moving to Rehoboth Beach.
She worked as an assembly line worker from 1963 to 1976 at Container Research. She was an active church member, both in her former church, Church of St. Francis de Sales in Lenni, and then in St. Edmond’s in Rehoboth Beach.
She was a woman devoted to her home and family.
She was preceded in death by her son, James Richard Montecchio, in 2005; her siblings, Joseph, Carmine and James Lupinetti; Sunday Salemi; Julie Borelli; and Annie Boyle.
She is survived by her husband, Bernard J. “Jim” Montecchio; a son, Bernard J. Montecchio and his wife Maureen of Aston, Pa.; a sister, Madeline Barone of Folsom, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Bernadette, Melanie, Ashley and Dominic.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Church of St. Francis de Sales, 33 New Road, Lenni with interment at 2 p.m., Tuesday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Asa Winfield Gray Sr.,
New Carrollton retiree
Asa Winfield Gray Sr., 92, of Lewes and formerly of New Carrollton, Md., died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, following a brief illness in Bristol, Tenn.
Mr. Gray was born Jan. 14, 1916, in Burgaw, N.C., the son of the late George Wellington Gray and Sara Elizabeth Wilson.
Mr. Gray served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He retired after more than 30 years of employment with New Carrollton Enterprises. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, woodworking and home improvement projects, as well as spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by two children, Asa W. Gray Jr. and Sharon Lee Faber, both of Waldorf, Md.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Clara Lee Rivenberk; three grandchildren, Christine and her husband Kenneth Poole of Union Bridge, Md., Shy and his wife Kelly Raber of Bristol, Tenn., and Jeffrey Gray of Frederick, Md.; a great-grandson, Kenneth Michael Pole of Union Bridge, Md.; a sister, Eve Fussell; and two nieces, Elizabeth Fussell and Gail Barrett, all of Burgaw, N.C.
Services were held at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, Brentwood, Md.

Charles W. Betts Jr.,
Salisbury State retiree
Charles W. Betts Jr., 89, of Delmar, passed Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, in Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, Md.
He was born Aug. 27, 1918, in Millsboro, son of the late Charles W. Betts Sr. and Sarah Catherine (Shockley) Betts.
After high school, Mr. Betts graduated from Beacom Business School with a degree in business.
His career spanned more than 32 years as a business manager at the former Salisbury State Teachers College, where he made many wonderful, long-lasting friendships.
Mr. Betts attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Salisbury, MD and also the Primitive Baptist Church.
He was a member of the Delmar Masonic Lodge 201 and Order of Eastern Star, the Adah chapter 5.
Mr. Betts was an avid gardener and a Master Gardener in Delaware through the Sussex County Extension Service.
He got much pleasure from collecting and finishing antiques.
Spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren was what he cherished most.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie Mai Betts, who passed April 21, 2004; and a granddaughter, Shannon Betts.
He is survived by a son, William D. Betts and his wife, Simmie of Salisbury; two daughters, Doris M. Fields of Cheverly, Md., and Carolyn Mai Massey and her husband Michael of Bishopville, Md.; three grandchildren, William D. Betts Jr. of Salisbury, Matthew Massey and his wife Jill of Chevy Chase, Md., and Sarah McCabe and her husband Draper of Millsboro; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held at Short Funeral Home, Delmar, with interment in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Delmar.

Olda Parsons,
Lewes businesswoman
Olda (Keene) Parsons, 75, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at her residence in Key Colony Beach, Fla.
She was born in Fenwick Island, daughter of the late Lemuel Augustus Keene and Mary (Kitchens) Keene.
Mrs. Parsons was a graduate of Selbyville High School and Goldey Beacom Business School, where she excelled in basketball at both schools. During the majority of her lifetime she was involved with her husband in ownership and operation of the family business of Fisherman’s Wharf in Lewes.
For many years she volunteered with the Beebe Medical Auxiliary and she was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Lewes. She was known for her green thumb as an avid gardener and enjoyed the local couples club.
Wherever she went she especially enjoyed meeting people and always saw the good in everyone.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brothers, Erwin and Clarence Keene and her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Cameron and Gertrude Ringler.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years Harry Dale Parsons; her son, H. D. Parsons and his wife Ann of Lewes; daughter Keena P. Ross and her husband Paul of Delmar; her grandchildren, Brinleigh, Mackie, Parron, Keara, Parker, Reven; a step-granddaughter, Sarah; her sister Anne Marvel and her husband James of Georgetown; her sister-in-law Ginny Keene of Millsboro; and brother-in-law Clayton Ringler, formerly of Bethany Beach; several nieces and nephews; and Angie Schuck, the Parsons’ AFS German exchange daughter, and Angie’s husband Rolf.
Funeral services with Pastor Fred Duncan officiating will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Akins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call two hours prior to services.
Friends may also call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday. Burial will follow the services at St. Peter’s Cemetery - Pilottown Road, Lewes.

Beatrice Cassanelli,

Beatrice (Balboni) Cassanelli, 95, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, in Rehoboth Beach.
Mrs. Cassanelli was born March 16, 1912, in West Springfield, Mass., daughter of Mary and Aldo Balboni.
She was a resident of Rehoboth Beach since 2006, where she lived with her son Robert Cassanelli and his wife Theresa. Prior to moving to Delaware, she lived in West Springfield for more than 90 years. She worked for the General Fiber Box and later for the town of West Springfield for 25 years, beginning as a school cafeteria assistant and later as a cafeteria manager. After retiring from the town, she began working at Angie’s Tortellini Company.
She was an active member of St. Ann’s Church in West Springfield, serving as Sodality president at one time and volunteering for its fund raising events. She donated many afghans to its annual raffle and for many years made tortellinis for the monthly sale at the church.
While a resident of Rehoboth Beach she was a member of the Harbour Lights Senior Center and also donated lap quilts to local charities. She especially enjoyed talking about the “good old days” growing up in West Springfield, watching classic movies (black and white) and watching Lawrence Welk reruns. She was a great cook and made many traditional Italian dishes for her family and friends. She enjoyed attending parties and get-togethers with family and friends throughout the years.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ralph in 1985; her son Paul in 2002; and her brother Raymond and sister Margaret.
She is survived by her son Robert and his wife Theresa of Rehoboth Beach; four grandchildren, Craig Cassanelli and his wife Sandy of Glastonbury, Conn., Cheryl Cassanelli of Lewes, Carrie Cassanelli of Nutley, N.J. and Aundrea Leven of Houston, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Amanda, children of Craig and Sandy Cassanelli.
A private funeral was held in St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Colleen S. Jackson, 52, of Milton, loving mother, grandmother and wife, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, in her home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Colleen was born on Jan. 26, 1956, daughter of Margaret (Smith) Stout and the late William Stout.
She worked at Coastal Towing as a service manager until she was forced to retire due to illness.
Colleen was a loving mother, grandmother and wife who will be missed by all who knew her. She always put her family and friends first and would do anything for them that was needed. She loved all animals and had many pets at home.
Colleen is survived by her mother, Margaret Stout; her husband of 36 years, Norman Jackson Jr.; a daughter, Susan Isaacs and her husband Trey; three sons, Norman (James) Jackson and friend Deanna Savage, Richard (Dickie) Jackson and his wife Jenn and 8-year-old Garrett; four grandsons and two granddaughters, all of Milton; and six brothers and three sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal Street, Milton where friends may call after 6:30 p.m. Burial will be private.

He was a brick mason for Henlopen Masonry for 34 years, retiring in 2006.
David was a member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church, Georgetown.
In addition to his father, he is survived by two children, Candi Lee Roach of California and David Wayne Roach of North Dakota; a grandchild; two sisters and two brothers, Jacqueline Wilson and her husband Kenneth Sr. of Georgetown, James D. Roach and his wife Shirley F. of Laurel, Steven Roach Sr. and his wife Louise of Laurel, and Deborah A. John “Johnny” Cannon,

John “Johnny” Cannon, 83, of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Renaissance Nursing Home, Long Neck.
Mr. Cannon was born July 15, 1924, in Milton, to the late Ed and Anne Cannon. He was the third oldest of four children.
He attended the 196-C School in Milton. He also attended night school at Richard Allen School in Georgetown. Mr. Cannon attended Sunday school at Bethel AME Church, Milton.
He was employed by Bookhammer’s Saw Mill from 1941 to 1943. Mr. Cannon served in the U.S. military for nearly two years, from 1943 to 1945. After returning home in 1945, he married Kathryn Smith Cannon, and to this union three children were born.
Mr. Cannon returned to work at Bookhammer’s Saw Mill in Angola from 1946 to 1971.
He was a family man. Mr. Cannon enjoyed fishing, motorcycles, softball and playing horseshoes. He enjoyed talking and had very keen sense of humor that would keep one laughing.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Geraldine M. Cannon Pettyjohn; a stepson, Earl Smith Sr.; a grandson, Keith A. Cannon Jr.; two brothers, Raymond and William Cannon; and a sister, Anne Cannon.
He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Kenneth L. Cannon of Rehoboth Beach and Keith A. Cannon of Harbeson; one stepdaughter, Ida White of Dover; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at Bethel A.M.E. Church, Milton.

Charles G. Scott Jr., 82, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was the son of the late Charles G. Sr. and Fannie Scott.
Charles was a retired heavy equipment operator. He worked until he was 80 years old. He loved horses and loved to help people take care of them. He was a hard-working man.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mildred T. Scott; his stepson, Lou Hall and his wife Judy of Millsboro; two grandchildren, Kevin and Curtis Hall; and two great-grandchildren, Kylee and McKenzie. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, with the Rev. Robert Hudson officiating. Interment will be private.

Elwood C. “Woody” “Sam” Burton, 70, of Frankford, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Burton was born in Dagsboro on Aug. 6, 1937, son of the late Harry and Etta (Robinson) Burton. He worked for Townsend and Mountaire farms. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Teresa Burton; four children, Tremaine Burton and Jeytes’ Burton, both of Frankford, and Peggy Burton Thomas and Kathy Burton, both of Paterson, N.J.; five grandchildren; and five siblings, Doris Hall of Millsboro, Mary Ann Atkins of Georgetown, Freddy Burton of Whaleyville, Md., Patsy Oliver of Salisbury, Md., and Gerald Burton of Dagsboro. Services were held at the Church of Christ, Frankford.
Interment will be at the adjoining cemetery.

James Monroe Stubbs,
long career in sales
James Monroe Stubbs, a loving, devoted husband and father, passed away peacefully to be with God on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008.
He was born in April 10, 1937, in Camden, N.J., the son of the late James and Christine Stubbs of Philadelphia, Pa., and Saluda, Va. A resident of Annapolis, Md., for 35 years, he moved to Rehoboth Beach in 2005.
He played basketball on Yeadon High School state championship team of 1953 and then played for Wake Forest University. In the 1980s, he coached several youth basketball teams in the Annapolis Neck area. Affectionately known as the South River Water Activities Director, he taught countless people how to water ski on the Severn and South rivers for 35 years. In November of 2007, he enjoyed a deep-sea fishing trip in Cabo San Lucas with his son Jamison and his tennis partner of 25 years, Frank Johnson, of Mesa, Ariz. He was an active member of Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Maryland and more recently of New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Rehoboth Beach.
A member of The Gideons International, he had distributed Bibles to many local establishments, as well as to hundreds of people around the world during his travels. His lifelong sales career included that of being a manufacturer’s representative for Mayer Custom China of Beaver Falls, Pa. In his later years, he owned a Shakelee Corporation distribution business.
He will be missed by his loving wife Carole of Rehoboth Beach; his son, James of Lewisberry, Pa.; his daughter, Donna Sholly of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; his son Jamison of Warrenton, Va.; his six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Gail Lavelle of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; his niece and nephew; his great-niece and great-nephew; as well as many cousins and numerous wonderful friends.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Feb. 24, at Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 710 Ridgely Ave., Annapolis, Md. A gathering will be held at 2 p.m., at Fellowship Hall, preceding the service. Refreshments will be served. An additional celebration in his memory will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29, at New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Rehoboth Beach. Private burial services will be held at a future date.

Patricia (Purcell) McGown, 70, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at her residence, surrounded by her loved ones.
Mrs. McGown was born Sept. 26, 1937, in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late James A. and Miriam (Jarnagin) Purcell.
Mrs. McGown retired from the federal government in 1982 after 22 years of service. She had worked at the Pentagon, in Dallas, Texas and the former Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She was a leader with her Bible study fellowship group. She loved to crochet and was very fond of her pet schnauzer, Dede. Pat was a very loving person who could light up any room she entered.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Mike Sipich.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, David D. McGown Sr.; her son David D. McGown Jr. of Lewes; her daughter Debbie DeRossett and her husband Brent of Springfield, Mo.; two grandchildren, Garrett DeRossett and Regan DeRossett; and her brother James Purcell of Sylvania, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes. Final services and interment will take place in Missouri.

B. Gary Scott,
prominent Realtor
Benjamin Garrison Scott Jr., 75, of Wilmington and Sanibel, Fla., beloved husband, father, stepfather and grandfather, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Born January 12, 1933, in Ashtabula, Ohio, he was the son of the late Benjamin G. Scott and Mildred G. Scott. Gary moved to Delaware as an infant.
His early education was in the Delaware public schools, graduating from PS DuPont High School in 1951 where he was a nine-letter winner in football, basketball and track. He had the opportunity to be on the Second Team All-State Football and was the 1950 Delaware Interscholastic Track champion in the 100-yard dash and 220-yard dash. He was awarded a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, graduating in 1955 with a business degree in real estate and finance. At U of P, he played a major college football schedule for four years and lacrosse for one year. He was the recipient of The Maxwell Club Award for Major College Player for their game against Penn State in a 13-7 victory. He was a member of the Sphinx Senior Honor Society and ROTC, where he was a distinguished military graduate. He was also a member of the Scabbard and Blade Honor Society.
He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and served eight years in active reserve. He retired as a captain/infantry.
Gary’s work experience included one year as a real estate sales associate for John C. Roman Company and five years with the DuPont Company as real estate director. In 1961 he acquired Tatnall and Wenzing Real Estate and changed the name to B. Gary Scott, Realtors in 1962. From 1962 through 1991, he was founder, president and chief executive officer of the company, one of Delaware’s largest real estate firms until its sale to Prudential in 1991.
During his lengthy real estate career he earned several professional designations and awards: Graduate, Realtors Institute (GRI), Certified Real Estate Broker (CRB), past president, Wilmington Board of Realtors and Delaware Association of Realtors. He was an inductee into the New Castle Board of Realtors Hall of Fame.
In 1992, he was the Republican nominee for governor.
Gary was active in serving in many ways in the community. He served formerly as vice president, Wilmington Senior Center; vice president, United Way of Delaware; director, Goodwill Industries; director, Junior Achievement of Delaware; director, University & Whist Club; president, Wilmington Touch Down Club. Other professional service included director, Wilmington Savings Fund Society; director, Artesian’s Savings; and part owner and president, Wilmington Blue Bombers professional basketball team. He has the proud honor of being a 2004 inductee in the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of The Wilmington Country Club and The Sanctuary Golf Club, Sanibel, Fla.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, JoAnne T. Scott of Wilmington; three children, Susan Scott Donahue (Brian) of Rehoboth, Cathy Scott Holloway (William) of Chadds Ford, Pa., and Gary A. Scott (Mae) of Charlotte, N.C. In addition, he is survived by four stepchildren, Terri H. Sensing (Andy) of Hockessin, Marybeth S. Ferrante (John) of Wilmington, Dianne E. Wassall (Jay) of Lancaster, Pa. and Thomas R. Holben (Carrie) of Greensboro, N.C. He had the joy of his 14 grandchildren: Megan Holloway, Ben Holloway, Gary A. Scott Jr., Samuel Scott, Lauren
Zebley, Brian Donahue Jr., John Sensing, Beth Sensing, Mark Makowski, Christopher Makowski, Matthew Wassall, Andrew Wassall, Katie Holben and Drake Holben.

Edward S. “Bubby” Abrams Sr., 86, of Millsboro and formerly of New Castle, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at his son’s home.
Born in Wilmington on Sept. 5, 1921, Mr. Abrams was the son of the late Lillian Shewbrooks Abrams.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a deep-sea diver during World War II. In civilian life, he was employed with General Motors at the Boxwood Road site in Wilmington for 35 years until his retirement in 1982. He greatly enjoyed fishing with his son and spending time with his beloved family. He was also a fan of the many criminal justice and reality courtroom programs on television.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Mary Sylvester Abrams, in 1985.
He is survived by his son, Edward S. Abrams Jr. and his wife, Drusilla, of Millsboro; grandson, Edward S. Abrams III and his wife, Deborah, of Dover; granddaughter, Valerie Phillips and her husband, Douglas, of Millsboro; four great-grandchildren, Jessie Phillips, Michael Phillips, Tammy Bernardo and Joseph Bernardo; and three great-great-grandchildren, Kala, Kelis and Annabelle.
A funeral service was held in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, with interment in the adjoining memorial park.

Jay “Sonny” Watson Jr., 64, of Milford, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, in Christiana Medical Center, Wilmington.
Sonny was born in Milford, son of the late Jay E. Sr. and Estella Mae (Warren) Watson.
He was a design engineer and supervisor of the Machine Maintenance Department at L.D. Caulk, Milford.
Sonny was a member of the Cedar Neck Church in Milford, the National Rifle Association and the Delaware Farm Bureau; a 30-year member of Elks Lodge 2401; and a life member of Greenbrier Hunting Club and the ATA Association.
His hobbies included hunting, gardening (he was known for his lima beans) and fishing, especially surf fishing.
Sonny was a die-hard Redskins and NASCAR fan, especially Tony Stewart.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his two granddaughters, who were the apples of his eye.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Lee “Carter” Watson; one daughter, Lori Gordy and her husband Timothy of Milford; two grandchildren, Taylor and Kristen Gordy; one sister, Janet Callaway and her husband Wayne of Milton and their son, Joey Callaway and his wife Erin and their son, Ben; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gregory and Sharleen Bunting and their children, Jaime and Jesse; brother-in-law and his wife, Jay and Ann Carter and their children, Devin, David and Shawn; and many extended family members.

Bo Tanchuk, 62, of Lewes died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008 in Milton. Bo was born October 9, 1945, in Ludwigsburg, Germany, son of Adolf and Mary Tanchuk. An only child, he moved with his parents to Sao Paulo, Brazil, at age two. He received his elementary education at St. Cecilia Catholic School in Sao Paulo, and in 1959, he and his father relocated to Wilmington, where Bo attended Pierre S. DuPont High School, graduating in June 1964.
He attended Mercer University in Macon, Ga., for one year before transferring to University of Delaware, where he graduated in 1968. Bo served in the U.S. Army for two years, June 1968 to May 1970 and spent 14 months in Vietnam. Returning to Wilmington, he attended Delaware Law School of Widener College graduating with a J.D. in August 1975. Bo practiced law in West Grove, Pa., for two years and in October 1978 moved to Washington, D.C., where he was a contract attorney with the Army Renegotiation Board. A reduction in force ended his civil service career. He returned to Wilmington and in 1991, moved to Lewes. Bo then worked in construction and as a handyman for 17 years. Services at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro are pending.

William A. Rutherford, 86, of Millsboro, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at home.
Mr. Rutherford retired in 1981 as a service foreman with Diamond State Telephone, now known as Verizon-Delaware, after 40 years of service. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Millsboro. He was an Army veteran of World War II and past president of the Millsboro Lions Club, past commander of Indian River Post 22 in Millsboro, past president of the Sussex Central Ruritan, past chapter president of the Liberty Bell chapter of Telephone Pioneers, past president of Diamond State Telephone Pioneers and past president of the Lower Delaware Shrine Club. Mr. Rutherford is survived by his wife, Louise Henry Rutherford; two daughters, Leslie A. Collins of Bear, and Carol Wilson of Townsend; one stepson, Gary Morris of Fort Collins, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Gail McInerney of Newark; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren. Frederick E. “Fred” Hudson, 84, of Bishopville, Md., died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury, Md. He was born in Ocean View, son of the late Fred and Flora Kissinger Hudson. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Adeline Hudson, in 2001. He had been a master carpenter who restored homes for the Lewes Historical Society for more than 60 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Sussex Memorial VFW Post 7422. Survivors include two brothers, Irvin W. Hudson of Ocean View, and Robert Ebe Hudson of Melfa, Va.; three sisters, Gladys Williams of Dagsboro, Ella Mae Tubbs of Delmar, and Sallie A. Regina Holden Quinn, 93, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2008 at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill, Smyrna.
She was born April 15, 1914 in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Bernard and Mabel (Sis) Holden. Mrs. Holden was raised in Washington, D.C. where she attended St. Patrick’s Academy. She married John Aloysius Quinn in 1939 and worked for the War Department during World War II. She lived in Stockton, Calif. for some years before moving back to the D.C. area. In 1959 she established a second home in Rehoboth Beach which she always enjoyed visiting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John, on April 17, 1977; her brother, John Holden; and her sister, Mary Holden Hardie.
She is survived by her son, John Gregory Quinn, Ph.D. of Lewes; two brothers, Francis Holden of Yucaipa, Calif. and the Rev. Edgar Holden, OFM Conv. of Staten Island, N.Y.; and her sister, Gertrude Holden Palardy of Baltimore, Md.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Mark J. Connelly at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, Route 1, Lewes. Mrs. Quinn was previously inurned at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Dagsboro.

Bernard “Bud” London, 78, of Rehoboth Beach, and formerly of Millersville, Md., died Tuesday, Feb. 19, at his home.
Born Oct. 27, 1929, in Baltimore, Md., Mr. London was the son of the late Jack London and Francis Miller. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Marvin London, and sister, Shirley Fritz.
He served his country in the U.S. Army as a corporal in World War II. In civilian life, he was employed for 34 years with Krick Fire Protection in Hyattsville, Md. After retiring, he was employed by Super Fresh in Lewes before becoming ill.
Bud always enjoyed working first and foremost and then spent the rest of his time as a die-hard Yankees fan, along with many other sports interests. He enjoyed his time spent with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Lynch London; one daughter, Donna London Wilkinson and husband Charlie; his estranged son, Jeffrey Mark London and wife Kathy; grandchildren, Jason London and wife Samantha, Bryan London and wife Erin, Haley Wilkinson, and Jeff London Jr. and Nicole; and he had the joy of two great-grandchildren, Kaliah and Aiden London. He is also survived by Darlene Franke, who was like a daughter; and his extended family and friends will surely miss him.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, at Temple Beth Shalom, 1461 Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard, Arnold, Md. Lunch will follow immediately after at that location.

Pasquale “Paddy” Petrillo, 72, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at Gilpin Hall where he had been in failing health for the last three years.
Born in Wilmington on June 30, 1935, Paddy was the son of the late Denny and Carmella Petrillo. Paddy worked for 35 years at Rehoboth Beach Country Club while he resided in Rehoboth Beach. He was a longtime participant in the Senior Day Programs at Elwyn Institute in Wilmington and a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Petrillo. He is survived by his loving brother, Alexander “Lex” Petrillo and Mary Ann Moore of Wilmington; his sister-in-law, Marcia Petrillo of Chadds Ford, Pa.; nieces and nephews, Molly Petrillo, Cara Petrillo and Alex Petrillo, all of Wilmington; Lisa Scally of San Diego, Calif.; Jay Petrillo of Williston, Vt., and Chris Petrillo of Chicago, Ill.; along with eight great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Wilmington. Willis Thomas “Billy” Mitchell, 52, of Bensalem, Pa., departed this life at Chandler Hall Hospice Facility, Newtown, Pa., following a short illness, on Monday, Feb. 18, 2008.
He was born in Quitman, Ga., on Aug. 4, 1955, to the late Willie J. and Qussie Mitchell.
Billy received his early education at Brooks County High School, Quitman.
After high school, he attended Georgia Southern University on a basketball scholarship, and later received an associate’s degree in human services at Delaware Tech, Georgetown. Billy had a love for basketball and baseball. Before his accident, his desire was to become a professional basketball player. He was employed with Opportunities for All (Day Reporting Center), Trenton, N.J.
Billy joined Friendship Baptist Church, Lewes, where he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He was a member there until he relocated to Morrisville, where he met and married Mymie Hodges.
In November 2003, he joined True Servant Worship and Praise Center, where his pastor was Bishop E. Earl Jenkins.
Those who loved and knew him dearly called him Billy, Goat and Mitch.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Willie J. and Qussie Mitchell; sister, Charlie Mae Sherman; brothers-in-law, Ernest Bass and Roy Hodges; nephew, Ronald “Manny” Bull; and cousin, John Dasher.
Billy leaves to cherish his loving memories his devoted wife, Mymie Mitchell of Bensalem; mother-in-law, Deloris J. Mildred Francis Langrell Glessner, 89, of Georgetown, formerly of Preston, Md., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2008, at the Harrison House, Georgetown.
She was born on Nov. 8, 1918, to the late Frank S. Langrell and Elizabeth Perry Langrell. Mrs. Glessner graduated from Preston High School and continued her education at Bridgewater College.
She was the past owner and operator of the Linchester Mill.
Mrs. Glessner enjoyed going to the Linchester Pond and the flour mill.
She was an animal lover and especially loved her dog and her pet cats.
Mrs. Glessner was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Glessner; and a sister, Mary Louise Kruger.
She is survived by three nephews, Frank H. Kruger and his wife Nina, Alvin “Buzz” Kruger and his wife Josephine, and Paul Kruger Sr. and his wife Helen, all of Georgetown; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24, in Hill Crest Cemetery, Federalsburg, Md., with the Rev. Anne Pruitt-Barnett officiating. Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Friends of Linchester Mill, 3531 Seamans Road, Preston, MD 21655.

Lester William Cleaves, 55, of Dagsboro, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born in Milford to the late Elsworth and Helen Cleaves. Mr. Cleaves was a projectionist for many years in different theaters, including Fox and Schwartz.
He also worked for Dave Wilson’s auction, helping with the many sales and auctions. In his spare time, Mr. Cleaves enjoyed going to the racetrack and watching NASCAR. Mark Martin was his favorite driver. He will be sadly missed by his close family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Katie Cleaves of Dagsboro; son, William A. Prettyman of Rehoboth Beach; daughters, Bonnie Watt of Lincoln and Tammy Cleaves of Dagsboro; sister, Ester Sprill of Sugarland, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, in Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood.

Jason High graduate
Dottie Gean Snowden, 58, of Harbeson, was born to the late William and Mary Snowden on Oct. 5, 1949. She departed this life Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Dottie graduated from Jason High School of Georgetown.
She married the late James E. Hood of Milton.
Dottie was a member of the Blakely (S.C.) Methodist Church. After moving to Lincoln, she attended church at Pentecostal Church of God, and then moved to Harbeson where she was a current member of Mt. Carmel Seventh Day Adventist Church in Harrington. Each church that she attended she became a member of the choir as she loved singing for the Lord. She could always be found with a smile on her face. Her warm smile and loving nature made it easy for her to love and be loved. Her favorite pastimes were shopping and entertaining.
Dottie enjoyed working no matter what the task.
She is survived by her daughter, Dawne Snowden-Lowther and son-in-law David Lowther Jr. of Harbeson; four sisters, Dora Snowden and Jannie Mifflin, both of Ellendale, Fannie Frazier of Milford and Audrey Burgess of Dallas, Ga.; two brothers, Jerome Snowden and sister-in-law Barbara of Ellendale and Keith “TJ” Snowden of San Diego; a nephew, Willie Burgess, and niece, Elaine Worthy, both of Dallas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be noon Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Mt. Carmel Seventh Day Adventist Church, 103 Mechanic St., Harrington, where friends may call three hours prior to the service. Anthony “Tony” Christoph Kline, 25, of Lewes, and formerly of Stevensville, Md., died peacefully at his home on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008.
Tony grew up in Laurel, Md. He was a proud graduate of Maryland City Elementary School and Kent Island High School.
Tony loved his family above everything. He enjoyed playing his guitar, planting flowers and building with his hands, especially Legos. He was an avid animal lover. His dog Honey and cat Lucky were his favorites. Tony also loved the Ravens.
He was predeceased by his Nana, Amelia Curci, and his Uncle Ron Greer.
Tony is survived by his always loving family, his mother and stepfather, Sandie and Kevin Glaveskas of Lewes; grandparents Bernadine and Butch Lichliter (G and Pop) of Stevensville; favorite aunts and uncles, Aunt Sue and Uncle Jeff Williams of Elkridge, Md., Aunt Sharon and Uncle Ken Collignon of Laurel, Md., Aunt Shelly Greer of Stevensville, Md.; favorite cousins, Kristi Lee, Randy (Boomer), Taylor, Sydney, Steve and Sam.

Warren MacDonald
memorial service set
A memorial service will be held for Warren H. ‘Mac’ MacDonald at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 8, at Epworth Methodist Church, 20 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach. The Rev. Dr. Jonathan Baker will preside.
“Mac,” as he was popularly known, died at age 86 on Dec. 17, 2007. He had been a permanent resident of Rehoboth Beach for 30 years, and was involved in many organizations, including the YMCA, Kiwanis, the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and the American Legion. He served on the Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission and as a city commissioner in the early 1990s. 
There will be a reception following the service, at the new Rehoboth Beach Museum, which Warren helped establish. Friends and members of the organizations in which he served are most welcome. 
Warren will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at 1 p.m., Monday, March 10. Guests are requested to arrive by 12:30 p.m. at the Old Chapel on Fort Myer. The Rev. Dr. Bob Edmunds will conduct the service. A reception for friends and relatives will be held following the service at the Boulevard Wood Grill, Fillmore Street and Wilson Boulevard in Clarendon.

William Oliphant, 81, of Millsboro, passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, in Harrison Senior Living, Georgetown.
He was born Jan. 10, 1927, to the late Ronald Leggs and Essie Oliphant.
William retired after working as a heavy equipment operator with Melvin Joseph Construction,
Georgetown, for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post 7422 in Millsboro.
He is survived by two sons, Gerald Oliphant of Laurel and Terry Oliphant and his wife Sheila of Millsboro; two brothers, Tommy Leggs of Laurel and Edward “Tob” Oliphant of Gumboro; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call from noon to 1. Pastor Jeff Hudson will officiate. Interment will be in Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.

Mary Mears,
Master Gardener
Mary E. Mears (nee Nash), 86, of Georgetown, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at Harrison House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Georgetown.
Born in Stockton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Nellie Blades Nash.
Mary was a member of Providence United Methodist Church, and had led a very active life endearing her to people all over Sussex County. She served for 11 years as one of the dispatchers of the Sussex County Call Board, which predated the 911 system. She drove school buses for more than 25 years and was a Delaware Master Gardener, Sussex County Division. She won Master Gardener of the Year in 1997, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2006. She was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 2931, volunteered with Delaware Hospice Festival of Trees, and was a member of the auxiliary of the American Legion Post 8, and the ANONA Council 11 of Pocahontas. She also served in the Georgetown Historical Society. She served on the Board of Elections, and was Queen of Sussex County Cedars of the Red Hat Society at CHEER.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, H. Dale Mears in 1971; and by two sons, Richard W. in 1974 and Gerald E. in 1988.
She is survived by four sons. H. Dale Mears Jr. of Georgetown, William D. Mears and his wife Joyce of Georgetown, Ronald D. Mears of Townsend and Lloyd A. Mears of Georgetown; one brother, J. Paul Nash and his wife Linda of Greenville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews, and a very special niece, Jeannie Johnson, of Milford.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Providence United Methodist Church on Shortly Road, Georgetown. Viewing will be two hours prior to the service. Interment follows at Providence Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Schatz will officiate.

Susan “Sue” Wilkinson, 58, of Dover, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, in her home.
Sue was born Aug. 26, 1949, in Dover, daughter of the late Roland and Dorothy Wagner Wilkinson.
Sue was employed with the Justice of the Peace Court as a clerk since 1979.
She always had a love for animals, especially horses, and was a member of the United States Trotters Association and the Delaware Standardbred Owners Association.
Sue also was a member of the Wyoming United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Rebecca “Becky” Wilkinson on Oct. 3, 2002.
She is survived by aunts and uncles, Audrey and Ralph Sipple of Mesa, Ariz., and Ina and Harold Hopkins of Wyoming; cousins, Dale and Faye Sipple of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cathy and Richard Miller of Rehoboth Beach; godchild Fantasia C. Durham of Washington; and several close friends.
Services were held at the Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming, with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Doris Revel Slate, 58, of Parsonsburg, Md., passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at home.
Mrs. Slate was born July 2, 1949, in Milford, to the late Charles Walter and Rhoda Wootten Revel. Doris was a homemaker.
She was a member of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, Salisbury, Md. Doris was a loving mother, grandmother and wife and she also loved her animals.
Mrs. Slate is survived by her husband of 39 years, Burley W. Slate; two sons, Bruce Slate and his wife Tiffany of Delmar, Md., and Wayne Slate and his wife Sherry of Salisbury, Md.; two brothers, Charles R. Revel and his wife Peggy of Fruitland, Md., and John D. and his wife Linda of Salisbury; and two grandchildren, Wayne Jr. and Lillie Slate.

Helen R. Richardson Metzler, 95, of Lancaster, Pa., passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at the Mennonite Home. Born in Harrisburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank Irvin and Margaret Baughman Richardson. She was the wife of the late Robert S. Metzler.
She received her teaching certification and bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg State University and her master’s and associate’s degrees from Penn State University. Helen was a professor emeritus from Millersville University. Prior to that she taught third grade at Manheim Township Elementary School. Her specialty at Millersville University was reading and language arts.
Helen was an avid sports enthusiast who faithfully followed the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles. She liked to watch Penn State football games and also enjoyed reading mysteries and biographies. Her other interests include the Civil War, antique post cards and Beatrix Potter figurines. She took great pride in her home, and it was always beautifully decorated for the holidays. Helen and her late husband were benefactors to many, especially Millersville University, Shippensburg University and Penn State University.
Mrs. Metzler is survived by her son, Duwayne R. Litz of Rehoboth Beach; grandchildren, Adrienne Barto, Lancaster, wife of Jere; Jennifer Bates, Lititz, Pa., wife of Thomas; and Justin Litz, Exton, Pa., husband of Chryssa; and seven great-grandchildren, Theodore, Taylor, Colin, Jourdan, Christian, Kyler and Eleni. Helen also leaves behind caregivers, Linda Schopf, Millersville, Pa., Nancy Thomas, Conestoga, Pa., and Christine Esh of Lancaster.

James Stephen “Steve” Messick of Milton and Rochester, N.Y., 53, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Steve was born Dec. 24, 1954, in Milford. He was a graduate of Milford High School and served in the U.S. Navy.
He was employed in the masonry field for many years.
Steve loved football, baseball, and NASCAR racing, and he enjoyed trips to the Poconos, the Great Lakes of New York and The Gathering in Wellsville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Jane Glasco Suttcliff.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Rook Messick; parents, James P. and Susanne Messick of Milton; two sisters, Beverly Young and Karen Appell of Georgetown; a stepsister, Michele Warren of Milton; a stepbrother, Miles Norwood of Milton; and the five children in his life, Brittany Cunningham, Thomas Graham and his wife Valerie, Jennifer Maylone and her husband Daniel, John Graham, Michael Bostwick and his wife Raechel. His most joyful moments were those spent with the grandchildren, Malechi, Desiree, Dana, Xavier, Kaitlynn, Hailey and Daniel. Sandra Mae Dawson,

Sandra Mae Dawson went home to be with the Lord Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.
Sandra was born May 18, 1941, to Evelyn and John Anderson. Her brother, John Anderson Jr., is also with the Lord. She grew up in Bellefonte. She was a nurse at Riverside Hospital for more than 30 years. She spent her life caring for others. She loved to dance on “American Bandstand.” She was the first female car racer at Cecil County Drag Strip.
After she retired she relocated to Rehoboth Beach, where she volunteered for hospice. She loved spending time at the beach and riding the grandchildren around in the golf cart.
Sandra is survived by her husband, James Dawson; daughters, Karen Nightengale, April Dawson and Robyn Perez; and a son, Lawrence Warwick.
She was a devoted grandmother of 14 grandchildren. She will always be remembered as a passionate, caring and gentle woman who would always bring a smile to your face.
Family and friends may visit with the family from 1 to 2 p.m., Monday, March 3, at the Gracelawn Memorial Park chapel, with a service to follow at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the adjoining memorial park.

Sara Winkler, 90, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008.
Born Oct. 23, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Elva Howell. She was a graduate of Wilmington High School and Goldey Beacom Business School. Her husband and family operated Winkler’s Restaurant at Fourteenth and French streets. A member of St. Patrick’s Church, she was an accomplished pianist.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Bob Howell in 1970, and Edwin Howell in 1988; and by her son Paul in 2001. Sara is survived by her husband of 71 years, Henry; and their children, Henry Jr. and his wife Carol of Lewes, Edwin and his wife Karen of Paradise Valley, Ariz., Maryellen of Newark and Peggy Castorani and her husband Steve of Hockessin. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 29, at St. Patrick’s Church, 1414 King St., Wilmington, DE 19801, where visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Patrick’s Church at the address above.

Haywood I. Buck Jr.,
retired electrician
Haywood I. Buck Jr., 87, of near Georgetown, passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at Genesis Seaford Center, Seaford.
Mr. Buck was born Feb. 9, 1921, in Columbus, Ga., to the late Haywood I. Sr. and Thelma Thompson Buck.
He was an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union for many years.
Mr. Buck was a member of the Dagsboro Gospel Fellowship Church.
He was a member of Franklin Masonic Lodge #12 A.F. & A.M., Georgetown, and the Scottish Rite. Also, Mr. Buck was a past Grand High Priest and past Grand Master of Council of the York Rite.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Bruce Haywood Buck and Keith George Buck.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Louise Houts Buck; two daughters, Carol Jean Conn of Millville and Kathy Louise Skumautz of Hamilton, Ga.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29, at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro.
There will be a Masonic Service conducted before the service.
Friends may call at the funeral home at 6 p.m.
Pastor James Burton will officiate the memorial service. Burial will be private.
The family asks that donations be made to the Dagsboro Fellowship Church, PO Box 7, Dagsboro, DE 19939 in memory of Haywood Buck.

William J. Elder Jr.,
Bell Telephone retiree
William J. Elder Jr., 85, of Millsboro, and formerly of Secane, Pa., passed away peacefully Monday , Feb. 25, 2008, at the Little Flower Manor Nursing Home in Darby, Pa..
He was born in Kensington, Pa., son of the late William J. and Elsie (Kerschner) Elder.
He was a Bell Telephone installer, retiring in 1982 after 38 years of service.
William served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard and a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing and reading and was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan. William loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with them.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, M. Jane Elder, in 2001.
He is survived by two sons, William J. Elder III and his wife Susan of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Gary H. Elder and his wife Margaret J. of Broomall, Pa.; his daughter, Janet E. Whitehill and her husband Joseph of Orefield, Pa.; his sisters, Elsie Cope and her husband William of Orlando, Fla., and Florence (Sis) Steer of Cannonsburg,, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road in Millsboro, where friends may call after 12:30 p.m.
Interment with military honors will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in William’s memory to, American Legion Post #28, 31768 Legion Road, Millsboro, DE 19966.

Robert R. Updegrave,
store manager
Robert R. Updegrave, 93, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at Gilpin Hall.
Born in Minersville, Pa., Mr. Updegrave was the son of the late Roy and Minnie (Miller) Updegrave.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a captain serving in Panama.
For 48 years, he worked for Woolworth’s, retiring in 1979 as a manager.
His wife, Claire L. (Fry) Updegrave, predeceased him in 1995.
Mr. Updegrave is survived by his daughters, Carol Lewis of Lewes, formerly of Wilmington and Cheryl Broomall of California; his son, Robert R. Jr. of West Virginia; six grandchildren, Eileen, Joseph, Robert, Tracie, Rebecca and Evan; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph Church, Wilmington, with burial in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Joseph Church, 1014 French St., Wilmington, DE 19801.

Annie Marie Johnson,
active in community
Annie Marie Johnson, 89, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at home.
Mrs. Johnson was born July 4, 1918 in Lewes, to the late Joseph S. and Estella E. Morris Johnson.
She was an elevator operator many years ago for the Pennsylvania School Board.
Mrs. Johnson attended the Israel U.M. Church in Lewes and the Christ Church in Harbeson. She was active with Lewes Senior Citizens, loved taking care of people, was active in the PTA at Rabbit’s Ferry School and prepared the school for opening in the fall, and was an attendant at the Lewes CHEER Center. She loved children, loved her nieces and nephews, “she always did for people” and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Johnson in 1971; two brothers, Joseph and Calvin Johnson; and two sisters, Hilda and Margaret Johnson.
She is survived by two brothers, Walter Johnson and Winston Johnson of Lewes; a host of nieces, nephews and a special close niece, Shirley B. Street and her husband Roy of Milton.
Services will be held at noon, Friday, Feb. 29, at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour before the service.
The Rev. Thomas Johnson will officiate. Interment will be in Christ Church Cemetery, Hollymount, near Harbeson.

Kent Douglas Noble,
Oak Grove manager
Kent Douglas Noble, 60, of Kitty Hawk, N.C., and formerly of Rehoboth Beach, died of pneumonia Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, in Kitty Hawk.
He was born Aug. 3, 1947, in Glasgow, Mont. He graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington, Va.
Kent was employed as property manager for Oak Grove Motor Court in Rehoboth Beach for 18 years.
He loved all flowers, especially the iris.
He distributed energy-saving light bulbs to friends and acquaintances long before they became the eco-friendly way to go.
He enjoyed creating bedtime reading materials out of highlighted newspaper clippings and sending them to his friends.
Kent had a huge heart and was a giver extraordinaire who enjoyed finding ways to provide friends with things they had expressed an admiration for.
He was generous beyond words and would share his last dollar with someone in need.
Kent is survived by his sister, KayLani Noble of Falls Church, Va., and her husband, Alfred Savastano.
Arrangements for services will be announced at a later date.
