In 1956 and 1957 he obtained an AB in psychology and master’s degree in guidance from New York University. Between 1958 and 1962 he taught in various capacities in the New York school system.

He taught at various times at Delaware Technical & Community College, Wesley College and the University of Delaware.
Dr. Gelof was a man of great intellectual capacity, a pioneer in many professional and industrial activities. As a psychologist he was well published and received worldwide recognition for his
work, “Sexual Rights and Responsibilities of the Mentally Retarded,” and use of visualization in education. Further, he specialized in the exploration and use of hypnosis as a learning aid, until his passing continued his certification in psychology and to develop concepts of “noise-free communication” in education. He applied his expertise in hypnosis in a stop smoking clinic and through his membership in the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He was a proud member of the Hartly Fire Company, Dover Elks Lodge 1903 and Congregation Beth Shalom.

Robert J. Quillen Jr.,
New Castle trustee
Robert James “Jim” Quillen Jr., 78, a lifelong resident of New Castle, died Friday, April 25, 2008.
Jim Quillen was born the son of Robert James Quillen and Gladys Tatem Quillen. Jim attended William Penn School through eighth grade and graduated from Wilmington Friends School in 1947.
As a youth, Jim was active in the YMCA and the Boy Scouts, especially enjoying summers at Camp Tockwogh and Camp Rodney; he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Jim graduated from Haverford College in 1951. He fulfilled his duty of military service by enlisting in the Army, serving three years in the Counter-Intelligence Corps, stationed in Germany.
Upon his honorary discharge, Jim immediately became an integral part of the Quillen Brothers Ford dealership, founded by his father and uncle in 1926.

During his years managing Quillen Brothers Ford, Jim was very active in the National and Delaware Automobile Dealers Associations, serving as president of the state organization. He also served on the boards of the Salvation Army and the New Castle branch of the Wilmington Trust Company.
Jim continued managing Quillen Brothers until 1982. He devoted the next two years to his brother’s gubernatorial campaign. After the 1984 election, Jim was appointed director of Parks and Recreation for New Castle County.
In the late 1980s, Jim was hired as president of the Brandywine Construction Company where he served until his retirement.
Asked why he retired, Jim replied simply, “I owed it to my wife.”
Perhaps Jim’s greatest service was to the town of New Castle. He was active as a young man in the Jaycees, and was a loyal, lifelong supporter of the Goodwill Fire Company.
He was elected in 1968 to a lifetime position as a trustee of New Castle Common. Jim was an active leader of the New Castle Presbyterian Church where he served multiple terms as a trustee and, among other tasks, co-chaired a recent major remodeling of the Christian Education Building.
Jim was also a loyal supporter of Wilmington Friends School and looked forward to reunions with his friends and classmates.
The Quillen children followed their parents as Friends School graduates.

Jim’s life was also centered in Lewes, where he loved the informality and cordiality of the beach. The Lewes beach house has been a gathering place for three generations and many longtime friends. Vacations to Hawaii and Florida were nice, but Lewes was his comfort like New Castle.
Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Flinn Quillen. Jim is also survived by his daughter, Anne Quillen Donecker and son-in-law Jay Donecker of Reidsville, N.C., and by two grandchildren, James Flinn Donecker and Sherrie Marchant Donecker.
Jim was predeceased by his son, Robert Irvine Quillen. Other survivors include Jim’s brother, William T. Quillen, his wife Marcia, their children and grandchildren; and Barbara’s sister, Fairfax Flinn Hering, her husband George, and their children and grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating Jim’s life will be held in the Meetinghouse at the New Castle Presbyterian Church, 25 East Second St. in Old New Castle, New Castle, DE 19720, on Tuesday, April 29, at 2 pm.
A reception will follow the service in the Christian Education Building. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Wilmington Friends School, 101 School Road, Alapocas, Wilmington, DE 19803; or New Castle Presbyterian Church to the above address.
Arrangements by Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory.
