Paul Everett Flood, Flood Pontiac co-owner
Paul Everett Flood, 73, of Rehoboth Beach and Bethesda, Md., co-owner of one of the longest-lasting auto dealerships in Washington, D.C. and real estate broker in Rehoboth, died of complications of leukemia Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at Casey House in Rockville, Md.
Mr. Flood, with his brother, John M. Flood and brother-in-law, John D. Talbott, inherited Flood Pontiac Co. from his father in 1935. Once it was the only place in the area where people could buy the luxurious Rolls Royce autos and Checker taxicabs. The business was sold in 1980. Mr. Flood moved to Rehoboth Beach in 1985 where he sold real estate with Crowley Associates Realty Inc.
Mr. Flood was born in Washington, D.C. in 1935. He attended the Landon School and was graduated from Sidwell Friends School. He attended the University of Delaware before graduating from the University of Maryland and also attended Harvard Business School.
He entered the car dealership started by his father after serving in the Delaware Air National Guard. While serving in the Air National Guard, he was proud of breaking the sound barrier in 1958. His professional and business memberships included the Downtown Rotary Club in Washington, D.C., where he served as a secretary and membership director as well as a member of the Army-Navy Club in Washington. An enthusiastic golfer, Mr. Flood was a member of Columbia Country Club and the Rehoboth Beach Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf.
Having been brought up in a car environment, he was an auto afficianado and had a special passion for his late-model Thunderbird convertible. Mr. Flood was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. Besides being an avid reader, Mr. Flood could often be found playing chess and other board games with the grandchildren he loved so much. Although later in life his maladies slowed him down a bit, he never lost his enthusiastic spirit.
Mr Flood is survived by his wife of 45 years, Margaret Zaumeyer Flood; two daughters, Lesley Dial (Rob) of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., and Jennifer Dover (Marty) of Damascus, Md.; and four grandchildren, Ashley Flood, Courtney and Cameron Dial and Dorothy Dover. He also is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Ellen Flood Talbott (John), of Chevy Chase; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol and Bernie McCarthy of Potomac, Md. His brother, John M. Flood, died in 1981.
A celebration of his life was held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C.. Interment was in Parklawn Memorial Park. Richard Swartout, retired priest
Richard Swartout, 75, resident of Laurel and Cadbury at Lewes, formerly of Snow Hill, Md., died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes,
Richard was born in Niagra Falls, N.Y., the son of the late Chester and Agnes (Kok) Swartout. He served in the U.S. Navy.
He was an Episcopalian priest, retiring in 1995. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Reliance, Md., and the Shriners of Baltimore; president and founder of the Silver Eagles; and also a member of the Elder Moments at the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Lewes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Wilson Swartout.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Karen Hanson Swartout; children, Markus Richard Swartout of Deland, Fla., and Theresa Elaine Boos and her husband Lt. Shawn T. of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jenni Karisa Swartout, Kyle James Swartout, George Richard Boos and Samuel Lee Boos; a sister, Sally Eldridge of Iowa; and extended family, Patricia Karasick McKinnon of California and Shirley Pinder Cook of Florida.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 5, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Pine and Academy streets Georgetown. Burial will be private.

Kendal B. Prettyman, community activist
Kendal Barker Prettyman, 85, of the Country Rest Home in Greenwood, died Saturday, June 28, 2008.
Mr. Prettyman, a native of Lewes, the son of William Olva and Lottie Spicer Prettyman, lived in Georgetown for about 50 years before returning to the Lewes area in 1995. He had most recently resided at Martin Lane in Rehoboth Beach prior to a severe stroke in February 2002. He was a 1941 graduate of Lewes High School. After this, he worked in a civilian support position at Fort Miles under the U.S. Army Engineers for about two years before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, Fifth Division, at the height of World War II.
He participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima as a mortar gunner and was involved in the occupation of Japan until being honorably discharged in 1946 as a corporal. Mr. Prettyman joined the Army Reserves as a corporal in 1949 and spent time training at Fort Bliss, Texas. He retired from the Reserves in 1983 with the rank of major.
Upon returning to the states after the war, he worked as parts manager for the Henlopen Motor Company in Lewes (later Don Gallagher Motors) for 11 years until a fire destroyed the business.
Mr. Prettyman then went to work as a loan officer for Georgetown Trust, which was later acquired by Wilmington Trust Company. He served 32 years with the company, retiring in 1989.
Mr. Prettyman was past president of the Sussex Chapter of the American Institute of Banking (A.I.B.) and served as chairman of the A.I.B. National Publicity and Publications 1965-66.
He was very involved in the activities of his children. Mr. Prettyman was a past treasurer of the Sussex Central High School Band Boosters. He served nine years in the positions of president, trip coordinator and chief fundraiser for the Sussex Central Junior High Band Boosters. He was also a past treasurer for the Sussex Central Senior High and Junior High Wrestling Boosters.
Mr. Prettyman served as treasurer of the Georgetown Little League for 25 years. He served as secretary of the Union Cemetery in Georgetown from 1968 to 2002.
Mr. Prettyman was a past treasurer of the Georgetown branch of the Salvation Army. He was an original charter member of the Delmarva Easter Seals and was involved with the formation of the Central Sussex United Fund, later called United Way, and also volunteered at the Sussex Pregnancy Care Center and with Meals on Wheels.
Mr. Prettyman was a life member of VFW Post 9264, Fifth Marine Division Association, Marine Corps League, which includes Department of Delaware and Diamond State Detachment. He held the title of Pedigreed in the Military Order of the Devil Dogs, which is the Honor Society of the Marine Corps League. Mr. Prettyman also received the Legion of Honor and The Chapel of Four Chaplains citations.
He was a past member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes and a past member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Georgetown. While at Wesley, he had served in the positions of Sunday school superintendent, chairman of the trustees, chairman of the finance committee and president of the Methodist Men. He became a member of the Lewes Church of Christ in 1995. His first wife of 45 years, Jeanette R., Prettyman, died April 15, 1993.
Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Genevieve B. Prettyman, of Rehoboth Beach; sons, Ray K. and wife Linda of Largo, Fla., Keith R. of Georgetown, and Ralph W. and wife Andrea of Milford; daughter, Beth P. Berrie and husband Charles of Hartly; stepson, Richard T. Burton of Selbyville; stepdaughters Cheryl Skinner and husband Richard of Magnolia, and Carol Dukes and husband Joseph of Frankford; eight grandchildren, Erica E. Jarmon and husband Steve of Phoenixville, Pa., Tabitha A. Prettyman of Hartley, Jacob W. Prettyman of Little Heaven, Zachary E. and Alyssa R. Prettyman of Milford, Dalton M. and Sawyer R. Berrie of Hartly, and Austin J. Prettyman of Largo; one great-grandson, Addison R. Prettyman; five step-grandchildren, Richard Skinner III and wife Alison, Lee Skinner and wife Erin, Alisha White and husband Travis, Crystal Dukes, and David Dukes and wife Olga; and five step-great-grandchildren, Domenick, Logan, and Ava Skinner, and Kierstin Dukes and Alec Dukes.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, July 6, at Bethel United Methodist Church, W. 4th Street, Lewes, where a viewing will begin at 2 p.m. Graveside services and burial will immediately follow at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes, with full military honors.

Virginia M. Rust, sub shop owner
Virginia M. Rust, 93, of Harbeson, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Virginia was born in Millsboro, daughter of the late Annias W. Hickman and Viola T. Hickman.
She was the owner of Virginia’s Sub Shop.
Virginia enjoyed gardening.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Rust, in 1979.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Gloria Rust of Harbeson; two grandchildren, Phillip Short and his wife Angela of North Port, Fla., and Lisa Justice and her husband Michael, Milton; and two great-grandchildren, Nicolina Short of North Port and Kenna Justice of Milton.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, Milton. Interment will be in Harbeson Cemetery.

Sam Mussoff, World War II veteran
Sam Mussoff, 85, of Rehoboth Beach, died Thursday, June 26, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Mussoff over his career time had owned and operated a family shoe store, worked as a supervisor for a chain of Ladies Sports stores and most recently as a credit manager for Amtrak. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Devotion to his wife and children was paramount.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., son of the late David Mussoff and the late Leah Sachs Mussoff.
He is survived by his wife, Lenore Mussoff; his daughters, Teddy Bair and her husband Harold of Long Neck, and Jody Mussoff and her husband Christopher Wilson of Riverdale, Md.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Private burial will follow at Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.

Barbara M. McBride, community volunteer
Barbara Mullen McBride, 76, of Millville, and formerly of Alexandria, Va., passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
She was a loving wife and mother whose greatest joy was spending time with her family. She enjoyed her time as a volunteer for St. Ann’s Bazaar, assisting with the bingo at Shady Grove and helping with the readings for the visually impaired. Her friends and family will miss the delicious cakes she made for them and the many volunteer groups.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Mullen and Josephine Mullen Wells, and her two brothers, Joseph and Karlin Mullen.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Byron Meredith McBride of Millville; four daughters, Bonita McBride of Clarksville, Donna Nugent of Alexandria, Va., Joanne McBride of Alexandria, and Penny Deith and her husband Roger of Ocean View; two grandchildren, Sgt. Jason Nugent of Texas, U.S. Army, and Kelly Nugent of Alexandria, and two great-grandchildren. Jason Nugent Jr. and Madison Nugent.
Friends are invited at 9 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, to the Melson Funeral Home, West Avenue, Ocean View. A memorial mass to be held at St. Ann’s will follow at 11 a.m.

Charles Hurd, retired truck driver
Charles Hurd, 82, of Lewes, went to be with his heavenly father on Friday, June 27, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, after a brief illness.
Charles was born and raised in Felton, son of the late Mary and Charles W. Hurd.
He moved to Lewes 42 years ago with his wife Beverly and their two sons, Rafe and Matthew. He wanted to be near his younger brother, Buck, so they could go clamming at Massey’s Landing. Charles was a truck driver for many years, driving for several companies including Preston Trucking, Hudson Feed and Grain, and most recently Dressco of Lewes. He was a member of the Lewes Presbyterian Church and had served in the Army during World War II under the command of General George Patton, serving in Germany, France and other parts of Europe.
Charles had a woodshop in his back yard where he spent most of his time with best friend and youngest son Matt and beloved grandson Dain and neighbor Dave.
Charles was preceded in death by two grandbabies, Madison and Christian; a daughter, Patricia; four sisters, Ruth Hurd, Thelma Ford, Hazel Brummund and Marie Jenkins; and one brother, Leonard “Buck” Hurd.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly; seven sons, David of Angel Camp, Calif., Mark and his wife Donna of Greenwood; Adam of Milford, Rory and wife Mary of New Castle, Daniel and his wife Jennifer of Milford, Rafe and his wife Joanne of Millsboro, and Matthew and his wife Dawn of Lewes; two daughters, Susie Burris and her husband Willie of Milford and April of Milford; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Mary and her husband Roland of Milford; a brother, Howard of Louisiana; sister-in-law, Lois Hurd of Lewes and brother-in-law Harold Jenkins of Louisiana; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with the Rev. Harry Hughes officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to services. Interment will be at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lewes.

Jamie Lee Hembree, loved being an uncle
Jamie Lee Hembree, 22, of Georgetown, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2008, in his home.
Jamie had attended Southern Delaware School of the Arts and Sussex Central High School.
He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, and enjoyed working outside and being outside.
Jamie is preceded in death by his grandparents, Molly Hembree and James Hembree, Tennessee, and Mark Pusey, Georgetown.
He is survived by his parents, Laura R. Pusey and James Hembree Jr., of Georgetown, with whom he lived. Jamie is also survived by five brothers, William Pusey, Jovan Hembree and Mark Hembree, all of Georgetown, Michael Hembree of Allentown, Pa., and Timothy Hembree of Smyrna; two sisters, Brenda Breasure of Millsboro and Mary Emory of Allentown, Pa.; Uncle Frank and Aunt Pearl Tallent of Georgetown, Uncle Leo, Uncle Gerald and Uncle Odel, all of Tennessee; and Uncle Guy Pusey of Pennsylvania; several cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of good friends.
All services will be private.

Ruby Viola Fitchett, active in church
Ruby Viola Fitchett, 82, of Philadelphia, as she lived she made her transition to eternal rest peacefully and calmly after a lengthy illness, Monday, June 23, 2008, at University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
She was born Dec. 27, 1925, daughter of the late Horace and Viola Fisher.
At the age of 3, Ruby and her siblings moved to Easton, Md. She received her education in the public schools of Easton.
Ruby’s Christian experience came at an early age when she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was endowed with the Holy Ghost.
Although she was very young, she was extremely active in the church and was quite involved in kingdom building. Her work was unceasing and devoted to Christ.
In the church Ruby served on many auxiliaries. Her greatest joy was serving as president of the pastor’s aide committee.
She was deeply concerned with the well-being of God’s shepherds.
Ruby served faithfully and diligently as president of the pastor’s aide committee under the leadership of the late Elder Bessie Washington, Bishop Rose Thomas, Elder Marion Nelson, Bishop Nathan and Pearl Moore.
She was the epitome of unrelenting determination. Even after her health began to fail she continued to serve as president of the pastor’s aide of St. James Pentecostal Church.
Many called her Mother and she took this role seriously. She was always willing to lend a helping hand.
On Aug. 27, 1950, Ruby Viola Fisher was united in holy matrimony to Harry Fitchett. This union was blessed with six children, Harry Jr., Ida, Carlos, Robert, Cynthia and Alexander.
Ruby also cared for and helped to raise several of her nieces and nephews.
Not only has Ruby portrayed her gifts of love throughout the church, but she was a devoted, loving and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend whose first priority was the welfare and happiness of her family.
Ruby was very family oriented and always cherished family gatherings and the opportunity to spend time with her loved ones and friends. Many lives were touched by her kindness and hospitality.
Ruby leaves to lovingly cherish their memories her loving, devoted husband of 58 years, Harry M. Fitchett; two daughters, Ida M. Fitchett of Georgetown and Cynthia Fitchett-Nelson of Philadelphia; four sons, Harry M. Fitchett Jr., Carlos J. Fitchett (Barbara), Robert E. Fitchett and Alexander P. Fitchett (Pinkie) of Philadelphia; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry Smith of Philadelphia; one sister, Laura Robicshaw of Philadelphia; two sisters-in-law, Marie McNeal of Milton and Johnna Mae Smith of Philadelphia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends.
Funeral services were held in St. James Pentecostal Church, 41st and Ludlow streets, Philadelphia.

Elsie F. Snell, General Electric retiree
Elsie F. Beltz Snell, 85, of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, June 30, 2008, at Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach. She was born in Holyoke, Mass., on June 27, 1923, to the late Bruno and Ella Beltz.
Elsie was employed by General Electric Co. as an assembly line worker.
She enjoyed playing board games and card games and doing crossword puzzles.
Elsie was predeceased by her first husband, Robert C. Bauer in 1982; her second husband, Don Snell in 1990; and by her son, William J. Bauer in 1985.
She is survived by three daughters, Janice Chadwick of Westminster, Colo. Christine Baker of Kingsley, Pa., and Diana Smith and husband Boyd of Kingsley, Pa.; and a son, George W. Bauer of Rehoboth Beach.
She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 5, at the Kingsley United Methodist Church, State Road 2055, Kingsley, Pa.

Anthony Capuano, Korean War veteran
Anthony Capuano, 76, of Millsboro, formerly of Hyattsville, Md., passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at home. Anthony was a member of Mary, Mother of Peace Roman Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard. Anthony was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was a gentle soul.
He was a modest man who loved his grandchildren, fishing and horses. His wife Loretta M. survives him; as do three sons, Anthony Joseph Capuano and wife Marlo of Worthington, Ohio, Mark Stephen Capuano of Millsboro, and Christopher Edward Capuano of Centerville, Md. He is also survived by one brother, Phillip Capuano and wife Constance of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one sister, Anna M. Curry and husband James D. of Dunkirk, Md.; a sister-in-law, Christine Capuano of Ocean City Md., and the joys of his life, six grandchildren, Vincent, Carlotta, Claire, Cecelia, Olivia and Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Frances Caruso Capuano; and one brother, Louis Capuano. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 8, at Mary, Mother of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Route 24, Oak Orchard. A viewing will be held 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Monday July 7, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro. The Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Ronald Eugene Hilliard, DOC worker
Ronald Eugene “Biff” Hilliard, 32, of Selbyville, passed away at home on Saturday June 28, 2008. Born on May 19, 1976, in Dover, he was the youngest son of John and Rosetta Hilliard.
Ronald played Pop Warner football and loved playing jokes on his loved ones. He graduated from Indian River High School, class of 1995. After working at various jobs he was employed by the Delaware Department of Correction in Smyrna.
On July 1, 2000, he married the former Tashaye Turner. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Ka’Miya and Ke’Aira. He was a very devoted family man and will be missed so very much.
Biff enjoyed motorcycles, his sister-in law Pam’s tuna/macaroni salad and his beloved grandmother’s special apple cake. He found great pleasure in kissing his parents and even getting between them in bed. The affection was mutual.
He always gave his brother/hero Greg crazy Christmas gifts and enjoyed trading things with his brother-in-law AJ.
He was preceded in death by an older brother, John Hilliard Jr., his grandfather, Dorsey Hilliard Sr. and his uncle, John Bailey.
He leaves to mourn his loss and cherish so many precious memories his beloved wife Tashaye and his adorable daughters Ka’Miya and Ke’Aira, Selbyville; his son Tyrone E. Hilliard, Dover; his devoted parents John and Rosetta Hilliard, Selbyville; his brother and sister-in-law Gregory and Pamela Hilliard, Smyrna; grandmother Mary Hilliard, Selbyville; grandparents Robert and Marie Matthews, Roxana; father-in law and mother-in-law Anthony and Sandra Turner; brother-in-law Anthony “AJ” Turner Jr.; sister-in-law Arraye Turner, all of Sudlersville, Md.; special nieces Monique, Jasmine and Shi’erra Hilliard, Smyrna; devoted friends Damon “Goose” Butler and Tasha Watson; and special friends Thomas Lawrence, AJ Turner, Ryan Robinson, Damon Bivens, Troy Haines and Ce Ce Belmont.

Funeral services will be held at Calvary Pentecostal Church, Route 113 North, Bishopville, Md., at 1 p.m., Monday, July 7. The Rev. Sylvester Briddell will be officiating.

Gladys L. Rhoades, enjoyed cooking
Gladys L. Rhoades, 85, of Lewes, formerly of Clayton, died Monday, June 30, 2008, at Milford Hospice Center.
Mrs. Rhoades was born June 23, 1923, in Boothwyn, Pa., to the late William Joyce and Mary Williams Joyce.
During World War II Mrs. Rhoades worked at a defense plant.
She was a homemaker but had cooked for Smyrna Daycare for about six years.
Mrs. Rhoades was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and wife. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and fishing.
Mrs. Rhoades was preceded in death by her husband, Chester F. Rhoades Sr. in 1995; and her two sons, Chester Rhoades Jr. in 1996, and Timothy Wayne Rhoades in 1959.
She is survived by her son, Glen Rhoades of Clayton; three daughters, Barbara Largent of Apple Valley, Minn., Judy Robinson of Lewes and Joyce Franks of Ocean City, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Lee, Mark, Scott, Gabriel, Ashley Sr., Donald, David, Wojo and Caroline; and six great-grandchildren, Nicole, Joshua, Ryan, Olivia, Ashley Jr. and Jacob.
Funeral services were held Wednesday July 2, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover.
Interment was in Chester Bethel Cemetery, Foulk Road, Wilmington.

Ruth E. Humphries, 90, of Delmar, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
Ruth worked many years as a secretary at the Beebe School of Nursing in Lewes and also worked hard as a homemaker, wife and mother. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, at Short Funeral Home, Delmar, where family and friends may call from noon to 1 p.m..
The Rev. Robert C. Reinert will officiate. Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery in Lewes.

Linda Marie Dillinger, retired Cape teacher
Linda Marie (Dennis) Dillinger, 61, of Lewes, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. She was born May 9, 1947, in Salisbury, daughter of Olin Woodrow and Virginia Marie (Hambley) Dennis.
Mrs. Dillinger was an elementary school teacher for 35 years; she taught the learning disabled for 15 of those years.
She retired from teaching while serving at Rehoboth Elementary School.
She was named the 2006-07 teacher of the year. She served on many committees at Rehoboth Elementary School. She enjoyed traveling and reading in her spare time.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 10, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with Pastor Charlie Arnold officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Thursday and also from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday. Interment will be private at Henlopen Memorial Park.

Paula A. (Volkman) Disque, 61, of Lewes, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008, at her late residence. Paula was born Dec. 14, 1946, in Taunton, Mass., to the late Albert E. Volkman and Rachael (Tocchi) Volkman.
She is survived by her husband Gerald Disque Sr.; daughter, Kimberly Lear of Rehoboth Beach; son, Gerald S. Disque Jr. of Rehoboth Beach; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 10, at Delaware Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Millsboro, with Pastor Maxine Ungerbuehler officiating.

Marjorie M. Ritter, family businesswoman
Marjorie Mae Ritter, 89, of Lewes, passed away Friday, July 4, 2008, at Harbor Healthcare Center in Lewes. Mrs. Ritter was born on May 30, 1919, the daughter of the late Manaen B. Marvel and the late Adah Rae Steele Marvel.
Mrs. Ritter worked with her husband as a secretary for the Howard Ritter & Sons Sand and Gravel Company. She was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Chapel. She was an avid reader, liked working crossword puzzles, loved playing bingo and Scrabble and especially enjoyed cooking and gardening. Her ability to remember names and special birthdates was her special talent. She was a member of Pocahontas Club, enjoyed playing the piano and loved country music. Traveling and going to stock car races was of great enjoyment to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Louis Ritter, in 1992 and a son, Frederick Ritter in 2003.
She is survived by her daughters, Carole Gibson of Lewes, and Joyce Steele of Lewes; two sons, Ronald Ritter and his wife Katherine of Lewes, and Robert Ritter and his wife Genevieve of Smyrna; two sisters, Elvira Wilkins of Georgetown and Letty Hurley of Lewes; a brother, Manaen Marvel Jr. of Milford; a daughter-in-law, Linda Ritter; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, two stepgrandsons; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, at St. George’s Episcopal Church, Route 23 at Angola, with the Rev. Max Wolf officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Eveyln D. Parsons, retired dental assistant
Evelyn D. Parsons, 86, of Millsboro, passed on Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center.
She was born on May 22, 1922, in Millsboro to the late John and Alice Coffin Donaway.
Mrs. Parsons worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Adkins many years ago.
She was a 70-year member of Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro and loved to participate in many church-related activities. She was also a member of the Delaware Dental Association.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Parsons Sr. and a sister, Margaret Pearl Hall.
Mrs. Parsons is survived by her son, Robert J. Parsons II of Baltimore.
Services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, July 10, at the Grace U.M. Church, Church and Morris streets, Millsboro. Friends may also call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. The Rev. Ed Kuhling will officiate.

Helen P. Smith, Stockley Center retiree
Helen P. Smith, 83, of Millsboro, passed on Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at home.
Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Willards, Md., the daughter of the late John F. and Addie Wells Parker.
She worked for the state of Delaware at the Stockley Center, retiring in 1990 after many years of service.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro. She enjoyed reading, gardening, bird watching, and she was an unconditional giver of love to her family.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Ralph James Smith, in 1980; and a sister, Mildred Dennis.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters, Ann Funds of Rehoboth Beach, and Lana Robb and her husband Jeff of Millsboro; a sister, Dorothy Brasure of Laurel; three grandchildren, Allison Funds, Amanda Robb and Alex Robb; and one great-granddaughter, Ava Wilson.
Services were held at the Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, with interment in Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.

Cecelia D. Bristowe, Citigroup vice president
Cecelia D. Bristowe passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, June 30, 2008, at the Heartland Hospice in Wilmington. She was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme, a form of brain cancer, last year on her birthday. After six weeks of conventional radiation and chemotherapy, she then entered a program to help pioneer a new treatment at Duke Medical Center. She fought courageously for nine months to overcome this disease. The information gained will help others who may suffer from this disease.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Ceal was the daughter of Catherine and the late John Dabose. She attended Frankford High School. After graduation, she did secretarial work for Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania. She met and married her husband of 46 years, supporting him through college. While caring for their three children, Ceal held numerous positions in various trades. She quickly advanced to a position at E. F. Hutton, working with those individuals that developed the concept of managed wrap accounts. She retired as a vice president of the Citigroup in managed money.
Ceal traveled the world both during her career and in retirement, visiting 35 states and 10 countries. Also while raising children she became an avid tennis player and was ranked second in Delaware in amateur team tennis.
In retirement, Ceal excelled in art and was a member of The Historical Society of Early American Design. She enjoyed various art forms including reverse painting on glass, toleware and historical still lifes. She also enjoyed spending time at the beaches of Ocean City, N.J., and Lewes. Ceal’s biggest enjoyment, though, came in spending time with her grandchildren.
Ceal is survived by her husband of 46 years, William Bristowe; her sons, David and his wife Kathy, Kevin and his wife Elaine, and Mark and his wife Julie; her mother, Catherine Dabose; sister Joan Davis; and brother Jack Dabose and his wife Betty. She also is survived by her cherished grandchildren - Ryan, Christine, Amanda and Madison - whom she loved more than anything.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 8, at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road with a viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be private.

James “Jim” Stephen Richardson, 58, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Lewes and Baltimore, Md., died Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after a long illness.
He was born July 17, 1949, in Lakewood, Ohio, the son of Lewis H. Richardson and Dorothy M. Papoi Richardson. He graduated from Valley Forge High School in Parma Heights, Ohio, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a master’s in counseling and human development from Troy State University.
He worked at a variety of positions in education and management, and most recently was the featured photographer for EXP magazine. He moved with his partner of 18 years, John Zaucha, to Rehoboth Beach seven years ago from Baltimore.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his partner, John Zaucha; children, Scott L. Richardson and Whitney J. Richardson; siblings, Lewis “Rich” Richardson of California, Karen E. Richardson of Cleveland, Ohio, and Robert “Bob” P. Richardson of Pennsylvania; and his former wife, Nancy L. Graham.
A memorial service is planned for what would have been Jim’s 59th birthday, Thursday, July 17. As he wished, family, friends and the public are invited to attend and wear all white for a White Party Celebration of Life at 11 a.m., to be followed by a reception at noon with refreshments and light fare as well as entertainment at Cape Henlopen State Park beach. Mary R. Clarke, noted educator
Mary R. Clarke, a longtime resident of Rehoboth, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2008, at Beebe Hospital in the presence of family and friends.
Mary was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Philadelphia, daughter of John A. and Susan Corrigan Robb.
She attended St. Martin of Tours grade school in Philadelphia and began high school at Little Flower. When she was 16 years old, Mary’s family moved to Baltimore, Md., where Mary graduated from Seton High School. Mary earned her bachelor’s degree from Loyola College in Baltimore and her master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.
Mary began her career teaching languages in the Baltimore Public Schools. A Fulbright Scholar, she continued her studies at The Sorbonne in Paris and the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She was eventually appointed language department director for Baltimore Public Schools.
Mary was wed to William T. Clarke Jr. on April 11, 1973. Mary soon retired and she and Bill moved to Rehoboth Beach in 1976. Both Mary and Bill truly enjoyed life in the beach community. Mary was active at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church on the Parish Council, the Sodality, the Bereavement Committee and as a lector.
She also contributed her time to the community through Meals on Wheels, as a docent for the Rehoboth Art League and as community fund collector for various charities. Mary and Bill visited each continent at least once, traveling extensively until Bill developed Alzheimer’s disease in the mid-1990s.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Bill; her parents; her sisters, Cecilia Fichter, Clare McCormick and Sister Anne Robb; and her brother John A. Robb III. She is survived by nephew John Fichter and wife Susan of Gaithersburg, Md., niece Carol Fichter of Rehoboth Beach, niece Deborah VanderHelm and husband Gordon of Alexandria, Minn.; nine grandnieces and -nephews and two great-grandnephews.
The family deeply appreciates the care given to Mary by Drs. Birch, Sunnergren, Rosa and Batra, and the staff of Beebe Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach. Burial was private at Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Rehoboth Beach.

Ernest F. Hopkins, retired farmer
Ernest F. Hopkins, 77, of Lewes, passed away at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes on Sunday July 6, 2008, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness.
Born and raised in Lewes, he was the son of the late James W. Hopkins and Laura F. Hopkins. He graduated from Lewes High School in 1948.
His greatest joy included spending time with his family and grandkids. His interests were singing, raising farm animals, watching crops grow and telling a joke to make someone laugh.
Ernie retired from what he knew and loved most, which was farming, in 1997. He contributed to the milk being sold through Lewes Dairy. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of 57 years of Jefferson Lodge in Lewes. He was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Unity Chapter 16 in Lewes. He was also a member of Bethel United Church, also in Lewes. Earlier in his life, Ernie, his brother, his father, father-in-law and special guests could be heard singing on the radio every Sunday morning during the Precious Memories hour.
He is predeceased by his parents James W. and Laura F. Hopkins; and his brother, Everett C. Hopkins.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joy H. Hopkins; his son, Kenneth E. and his wife Suzette and daughter Natalie of Lewes; his daughter, Sandra H. and her husband Michael Walker and sons Steven and Bradley of Lewes; and many close additional family members and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, July 11, at Melson Funeral Home on Long Neck Road, where friends can visit an hour before. Burial will follow in Conley’s Cemetery, Angola.

Ruth E. Humphries, 90, of Delmar, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
She was born Sept. 3, 1917, in Newport News, Va., a daughter of the late John D. Elliott and Elizabeth Warrington Elliott, and the late Frances Elliott, who was like a mother to her.
Ruth worked many years as a secretary at the Beebe School of Nursing in Lewes and also worked hard as a homemaker, wife and mother. She was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church of Salisbury, where she played piano and organ for many years and also recently worked as a teacher’s aide in the first and second grades at Faith Baptist Christian School. Ruth had a special love for her family and cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which is proven by the family photos that cover the walls of her home. She is remembered by her family as an excellent cook; chocolate chip cookies were one of her many specialties. She enjoyed doing handiwork, knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching, and sharing her works with her family. Many of her family members treasure the afghans and other handmade items that she made for them as special gifts. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading, especially her daily Bible readings, and was known to keep daily journals, which date back for many years. She was an avid fan of her Baltimore Orioles and the Duke basketball team.
She is survived by four children, Randall Humphries and his wife Margaret of Hammonton, N.J., Daniel Humphries and his wife Maggie of Folsom, Pa., Jacqueline Gage and her husband Robert of Delmar, Del., and Edwin Humphries and his wife Traci of Rehoboth Beach; seven grandchildren, Dean Humphries and his wife Robin, Mike Gage and his wife Lilly, Brian Humphries, Steven Gage and his wife Cheryl, Christopher Humphries, Wesley Humphries and Troy Humphries; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Roland M. Elliott and his wife Dot of Lincoln University, Pa.; a sister, June Duffy and her husband John of Aldon, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur W. Humphries, who passed May 25, 2000.
A funeral service was Wednesday, July 9, at Short Funeral Home, Delmar, with interment in Bethel Cemetery in Lewes.

Robert “Bert” Lawson Wilson, 28, of Greenwood, a gentle soul with a big heart, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008, to be a angel with God to watch over and protect his children.
Bert attended Woodbridge High School. He was a self-employed contractor for nine years and for the last four months has been employed by Lowes in Lewes, where he was being trained for a management position.
Bert loved his family and playing with his children. In his spare time he enjoyed restoring old cars, but his favorite thing, he would say, was lying on the roof swinging a hammer.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife Mandy Wilson; two daughters, Alexis Rose and Taylor BriAnn; one son, Riley Lawson; his parents, William T. II and Bertha Wilson of Greenwood; one brother, William T. Wilson III and his wife Kimberly of Lewes; maternal grandmother, Conice Kernodle of Laurel; paternal grandmother, Gladys Wilson of Georgetown; nieces, Allison and Amber; nephews, William Wilson IV and Aven Ethan Wilson; 19 aunts; 14 uncles; 50 cousins; mothers and fathers-in-law, Cynthia and Sonny Garrett of Houston and David and Beth Zedney of Newark; three sisters-in-law, Amber, April, and Heather and her husband Tony; one nephew, Chase; and one niece, Hannah.

Nellie Jean Daisey, 80, of Millsboro, passed Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mrs. Daisey was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Berlin, Md., to the late Oscar and Elizabeth Cooper Dennis.
Nellie Jean worked at Seawatch International in Milford, retiring in 1995 after many years of service working in the personnel department and then the security department.
She was a member of VFW Post 7422 Ladies Auxiliary in Millsboro.
Her favorite hobby was crocheting, which she did for many years.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Daisey was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy, in 2003; and her son, Donald, in 1994.
Nellie Jean is survived by her son, Terry Daisey and his wife Carolyn of Dagsboro; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 12, at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call at 9 a.m.

Scott C. Hartle, World War II veteran
Scott C. Hartle, 90, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born June 14, 1918, in State Line, Pa., to the late Scott C. and Elva Pensinger Hartle.
Stationed in Boston, Mass., he served in the Navy and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Hartle took up residency in the Rehoboth area some 20 years ago. He was the owner/operator of a sheet metal company in Washington, D.C. before retiring. Scott happily celebrated his 90th birthday last month with his wife of 70 years, Mary Kathryn Chamberlin Hartle; his daughter, Beverly and her husband Walton “Hank” W. Sanderson Sr. of Rehoboth Beach; his grandson, Walton W. Sanderson Jr. of Georgetown; and granddaughter, Kathryn Anne Blakeman and her husband Dan, and children Bethany and Massey of Miami Shores, Fla. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Scott and Kathryn Lee Sanderson of Greenville, N.C., and many nieces and nephews. All services are private. Virginia Lee Escott, Beebe honoree
Virginia Lee Warrington Escott, 85, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Monday July 7, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Escott was born Sept. 4, 1922, daughter of the late Oscar H. Sr. and Elva M. Rust Warrington. She graduated from Lewes High School in 1940 and attended Beebe School of Nursing before she met and married Robert A. Escott of Wilmington. She and her husband returned to Wilmington where she worked for T.B. O’Toole Inc. Realtors until they were incorporated by Wilmington Trust. She then served Wilmington Trust as Brandywine Insurance Manager, becoming a Quarter Century Club member in 1982. After her retirement she returned to her hometown. Virginia joined the Beebe Auxiliary and was honored by official resolution in 1992 for her work as president of the Auxiliary serving two consecutive terms from May 1988 to May 1992. Her fundraising abilities set the stage for current Auxiliary successes. Later, she went back to doing her favorite jobs, serving trays and manning the information desk. Beebe School of Nursing also held a place in her heart and through her tenure as president she always tried to help in any way she could. Mrs. Escott was past treasurer of the Covey Creek Home Owner’s Association where she has many good friends. She always loved shopping at Lloyds Market because, “if Lloyd didn’t have it, she didn’t need it” and her friends there were so helpful. She was a magnificent housekeeper and gardener and loved the dogs of her life, Jacque, Muffin and finally Miss Muffin. Virginia served her community and sheltered her family for a lifetime. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her son, Bobby Escott; two brothers, Samuel C. Warrington and Oscar H. Warrington Jr., both of Lewes; three sisters, Kathryn Klingel of Rehoboth Beach, Margaret Kaminsky and Phyllis Hill, also of Lewes.
She is survived by a brother, Rowland P. Warrington of Caledonia, Ill., and three generations of nieces and nephews.

Evelyn “Ginger” Klinger, of The Villages, Fla., went home to the Lord June 29, 2008, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Her love of children was seen in her work as a library assistant and teacher’s aide for 23 years and as a leader for 4-H groups and youth groups. She was a member of New Covenant United Methodist Church in The Villages, She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Stanton for over 35 years. She is survived by Bob Klinger, her husband of 59 years; daughter, Donna and husband Jonathan of Rehoboth Beach; son, Todd and wife Carla of York, Pa.; and grandchildren. A celebration of her life and faith will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, July 20, at St. Mark’s UM Church, 1700 Limestone Road, Stanton.

Virginia Lee Escott, Beebe honoree
Virginia Lee Warrington Escott, 85, of Lewes, passed away peacefully on Monday July 7, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Escott was born Sept. 4, 1922, daughter of the late Oscar H. Sr. and Elva M. Rust Warrington. She graduated from Lewes High School in 1940 and attended Beebe School of Nursing before she met and married Robert A. Escott of Wilmington. She and her husband returned to Wilmington where she worked for T.B. O’Toole Inc. Realtors until they were incorporated by Wilmington Trust. She then served Wilmington Trust as Brandywine Insurance Manager, becoming a Quarter Century Club member in 1982. After her retirement she returned to her hometown. Virginia joined the Beebe Auxiliary and was honored by official resolution in 1992 for her work as president of the Auxiliary serving two consecutive terms from May 1988 to May 1992. Her fundraising abilities set the stage for current Auxiliary successes. Later, she went back to doing her favorite jobs, serving trays and manning the information desk. Beebe School of Nursing also held a place in her heart and through her tenure as president she always tried to help in any way she could. Mrs. Escott was past treasurer of the Covey Creek Home Owner’s Association where she has many good friends. She always loved shopping at Lloyds Market because, “if Lloyd didn’t have it, she didn’t need it” and her friends there were so helpful. She was a magnificent housekeeper and gardener and loved the dogs of her life, Jacque, Muffin, and finally Miss Muffin. Virginia served her community and sheltered her family for a lifetime. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her son, Bobby Escott; two brothers, Samuel C. Warrington and Oscar H. Warrington Jr., both of Lewes; three sisters, Kathryn Klingel of Rehoboth Beach, Margaret Kaminsky and Phyllis Hill, also of Lewes. She is survived by a brother, Rowland P. Warrington of Caledonia, Ill., and three generations of nieces and nephews.

Frank Brown, Air Force veteran
Frank Brown, 76, of Milton, formerly of Wilmington, passed away Friday, July 11, 2008, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
Frank was born in Chester, Pa., son of the late Frank Sr. and Ella Booker Brown.
He was a security guard with Sea Watch International, in Milford, and had also worked at Food Lion in Milton.
Mr. Brown was an Air Force veteran, proudly serving his country from 1950-54 and honorably discharged as Airman 2nd Class.
In addition to his parents, Frank is preceded in death by two sons, David Brown Sr. and Anthony Brown.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Antoinette “Toni” Marta Brown; three sons, Richard Brown and his wife Marsha of Wilmington, Martin Brown of Tennessee and Philip Brown and his companion Donna Chambers, also of Wilmington; and five grandchildren, Erin Brown, Angela Brown, Jeannette Brown, Katie Chambers and David Brown Jr.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Beulah Coverdale, physical therapist
Beulah Coverdale, 86, of Bear, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.
Beulah was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pa. She was the youngest child born to Gertrude and Louis H. Buek.
Beulah attended Lower Merion High School and was a Temple University graduate earning a degree in physical therapy. She was a member of the Temple swim team where she held many swimming records for the breaststroke. After college, she served in the military and was a first lieutenant. She married William M. Coverdale Sr., on Dec. 27, 1947, and together they raised four children, living in Newark.
She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendents in the state of Delaware and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Beulah worked as a physical therapist at both the Veterans Administration Center and Emily P. Bissell Hospital where she retired in 1984.
The Coverdales moved to Millsboro, where they enjoyed many happy years with their children and grandchildren fishing, crabbing and going to the beach. Known for her generosity and kindness, she was always busy doing word search puzzles, knitting an afghan for someone, driving her friends to appointments or just visiting with them.
Beulah also enjoyed many trips with her friends, traveling to Alaska, Hawaii, Florida and Tennessee. She was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and loyal friend. She had an excellent ability to understand, absorb and discuss all current events. She twice survived cancer and was in the process of moving from Millsboro to Bear to be closer to her family. While living in Millsboro, she was a faithful member of St. James Church in Georgetown.
She was predeceased by both her parents; her brothers, Harvey, Louis H. Jr. and Richard W.; her husband, William M. Coverdale Sr., and her son, Stephen M. Coverdale Sr.
Beulah is remembered with much love by her children, William M. Coverdale Jr. “Skipper” and wife Karen of Middletown, Barry Coverdale and wife Elva of Bear, Kathleen Bradbury and her husband Justin L. of Newark; daughter-in-law, Gail Coverdale of Bear; 13 grandchildren, Christopher and wife Nicole, Nikki and Corri Coverdale, Kevin and Chelsea Coverdale, Stephen Jr., Amy and Dave Coverdale, Carly, Sara, Justin R., Shane and Alissa Bradbury; and five great-grandchildren, Christopher Coverdale Jr., Nicholas Novello Jr., Julia Bradbury, Anthony James Hudson and Caden Bradbury. Beulah is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Albert, Louis and Louise Tortella.
Services were held at St. James Episcopal Church, Millcreek, Wilmington, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Marian C. Van Es, Tidewater retiree
Marian C. Van Es, 83, of Milford, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.
She was born in Milford, the daughter of the late William H. and Jennie Dodd Cleaver.
Mrs. Van Es worked for Tidewater Inland Express for 20 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Milford. Her many hobbies included quilting, crocheting, knitting, doing ceramics as well as being a wonderful organ player. Mrs. Van Es had the ultimate sweet tooth and enjoyed baking for her family. She was an excellent storyteller, especially telling stories about when she was growing up. She was also quietly adventuresome, learning to water ski at the age of 50, and was an excellent shot with a .22 rifle. Her family was always very important to her, for she was a wonderful wife to her late husband, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Dick Van Es, in 2005; and two sisters, Libby Hall and Alice Toler.
She is survived by two sons, William P. Haughey Jr., of Millsboro and Randal Haughey, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; one stepson, Jeffrey G. Van Es, of Virginia Beach, Va.; one stepdaughter, Geraldine B. Van Es, of Lakewood, Ohio; a sister, Dawn Ellingsworth, of Milford; five grandchildren, Jacolyn Beth Haughey, Shelby Miller, Cameron Haughey, Angela Jones and Melissa Haughey; a great-grandson, Kai Haughey; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m, Tuesday, July 15, at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Burial will be in Milford Community Cemetery, Route 113, Milford.

Thelma L. Stogner, enjoyed gardening
Thelma Lorraine Stogner, 88, of Milford, formerly of Milton, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Lifecare at Lofland Park, Seaford. Thelma was born in Milton, daughter of the late Clarence A. and Lillie P. Gray Dickerson.
She was a homemaker and dearly loved her family and the time spent with them. Thelma enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and ceramics. She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Bridgeville. In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph A. Stogner in 1995; and a son, Donald Stogner in 1991. She is survived by four sons, Ralph Jr., and Jay Stogner of Atlanta, Ga., Ray and Marjorie Stogner of Buford, Ga., Gary Stogner, also of Atlanta, and Jerry and Debbie Stogner of Greenwood; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Clendaniel of Milton. A funeral service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call 7-9 p.m., Tuesday. David L. Brady, RV park employee
David L. Brady, 35, of Frankford, died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Brady was employed by Treasure Beach RV Park, Fenwick Island. David was a soccer coach and he loved to play with his kids. At one time he had been a lead singer in a band.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Houser Brady of Frankford; two children, Zain and Alexa Brady at home; his parents, Marion Thomas and Margaret Marshall Brady of Georgetown; a brother, Marion Thomas Brady Jr. of Virginia; a sister, Helen Isdell and husband Eddie of Virginia. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 South Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Carey’s Cemetery Millsboro.
Doris Lee Mantyla, retired mediator
Doris Lee Hazzard Mantyla passed away peacefully in her sleep to be with the Lord Saturday, July 12, 2008.
She was the daughter of the late Harry and Nellie Hazzard.
She retired from the state of Delaware as a family court mediator. As a loving mother, committed grandmother and devoted friend to many, she enjoyed spending time with her family. During her life, she was dedicated to the church, especially St. Elizabeth Ann Seton while residing in Newark.
Doris was predeceased by her son, David Mantyla.
She is survived by her son, Lance Marvel; her daughters, Leslie Spinella, Ann Long and Alice Leighton. She will be sadly missed by her 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Herb and Gene Hazzard; and a dear sister, Irene Hazzard.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be offered at noon, Wednesday July 16, at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church on Lancaster Pike in Hockessin, where friends may visit at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Hockessin Friends Cemetery.

James R. Mancuso, World War II veteran
James R. Mancuso, 93, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Renaissance Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Millsboro.
He was born Sept. 23, 1914. in Wishaw, Pa., son of the late Anthony and Mary Ricca Mancuso.
Mr. Mancuso served as a tech sergeant with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a member of American Legion Post 5 of Rehoboth Beach and VFW Post 7447 of Rehoboth Beach. He was a member of St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church and Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
Mr. Mancuso is survived by his wife, Mary Kathas Mancuso; two sons, John A. Mancuso of Rehoboth Beach and James R. Mancuso Jr. of Destin, Fla.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and by his sister, Alice Lynn Mancuso of Reynoldsville, Pa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, John A. Mancuso Jr. in 1992, and his daughter-in-law, Diane Mancuso earlier this week.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 19, at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, Route 1 at Five Points, where friends may call at the church one hour prior to Mass. Interment with military honors will follow at Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.

Michael J. Cline, construction worker
Michael James Cline, 24, of Georgetown, died Monday, July 14, 2008, at Christiana Hospital.
He was the son of Richard and Cynthia Maslin Cline of Millsboro.
Michael was a construction worker for Thompson and Son. He was an avid sword collector, and loved playing Nintendo and fishing with his father.
He was a comedian, quick-witted, always happy and had a joke for every occasion. “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” was his philosophy in life.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a twin brother, Thomas Cline and his wife, Brandi, of Dagsboro; his paternal grandmother, Doris Cline of Laurel; his maternal grandparents, Jim and Connie Maslin of Townsend; and his favorite cat, Scully.
Services will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, July 18, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to the service, which will be officiated by Pastor Robert Hudson. Burial will be private.

Tina Yvette Harris, Lewes native
Tina Yvette Harris, 42, of Milford, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, July 14, 2008, in Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mrs. Harris was born Oct. 31, 1965, in Lewes, the daughter of Diana Harmon-Bougouneau and Thomas Harmon.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Diana and Mathias Bougouneau of Milford; her father, Thomas Ivan Harmon of Milton; her grandmother, Gertrude Harmon; her daughter, Megan Ann Harris of Milford; three sisters, Theresa Harmon of Harrington, Tracey Harmon of Houston, and Allison Harmon Steward and her husband Jeffery of Dover; her brother, Lamaj Bougouneau of Milford; and many aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and two great-aunts.
Funeral services will be at noon, Friday, July 18, in the Lighthouse Christian Center, 662 Milford-Harrington Highway, Milford, where friends may call one hour prior.

Marie E. Baugh, poultry plant retiree
Marie Elizabeth Baugh, 92, known by the name “Mrs. Baugh,” was born in Millsboro on Jan. 13, 1916.
She was the oldest daughter of seven children born to the late Theodore and MaryAnn Houston. On July 10, 2008, she went home to be with the lord, while residing with her firstborn niece and her husband.
Mrs. Baugh attended school in Millsboro.
She served as an employee at Paramount Poultry Company in Harbeson for more than 25 years. Mrs. Baugh was recognized for maintaining perfect attendance each year of her employment. She was admired by friends and coworkers for her dedication to improving employee working conditions.
While employed at Paramount, she served many years as a union representative, always a champion for employee rights.
Mrs. Baugh was a devoted wife and caregiver who loved her family very much.
She loved and devoted much of her time to her nephew, Neville Houston.
In addition to her husband, Horace Baugh, she was preceded in death by four siblings, Corina Young, Sophia Young, Helena Oney and John Floyd Houston.
She leaves to cherish her memories two loving sisters, Sarah Bethards of Millsboro and Sally Pratt of Brooklyn, N.Y.; several nephews; nieces; close friends; and three dedicated caregivers, Roberta Gosser, Alva Jones and Arinthia Peacock.
Services were held Thursday, July 17, in the Harmony United Methodist Church, Millsboro. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Services, Milford.

Margaret P. Stricker, Baltimore native
Margaret P. Stricker, 91, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
She was born in Baltimore, Md., daughter to the late Adolph and Mary Siedel Rezac.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra A. Strejcek and Margie Hain; three grandchildren, Barbara, Bruce and Brenda Hain; three great-grandchildren, Aaron Malone, and Stephen and Natalie Hain; and two nieces, Debbie Ferrara and Betty Gaphardt. Margaret is also survived by a loving family friend, Carolyn Clark.
A memorial service will be held in Baltimore at a later date.
