David B. Givens Jr., construction worker
David Barry Givens Jr. passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2009.
David was a construction worker and a proud member of the local carpenters union. He loved hunting and fishing and was a huge Giants fan. He enjoyed stock car racing and going to the local dirt track.
David is survived by his family: daughters Kelsie Ann Givens, Hunter Erin Givens; William E. and Patricia A. Webb Sr., Eddie Webb Jr. and companion Margaret; Tammy L. Long and husband Shane; David and Dee Givens Sr.; Christopher Givens; John T. Givens; Elizabeth Givens; also leaving behind beloved aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins and a host of special friends. His grandfathers, Bill Webb, Raymond Givens Jr., and Greer Sams and grandmothers, Judy Waite and Phyllis Givens Conway precede him.
Services will be private. The family requests no flowers; in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

Virginia M. Hall, Navy veteran
Mrs. Virginia M. “Jenny” Hall, 88, of Millsboro, formerly of Newark, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Born Sept. 21, 1920, in Claremont, W.Va., daughter of the late Alta Burns and Pearl Surbaugh Burns, Mrs. Hall was a 1940 graduate of Fayetteville (W.Va.) High School. She proudly served her country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, attaining the rank of storekeeper third class. While in the military, she completed the aviation metalsmith course of study at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Norman, Okla. In later years, Mrs. Hall was employed in food service at the University of Delaware in Newark. She was an active member of American Legion Oak Orchard-Riverdale Post 28 in Millsboro.
Her husband, Roy L. Hall, died in 1969. She is survived by two daughters, Christine Pini and husband Ralph A. Jr. of Millsboro, and Phyllis Sibila and husband Alvin of Marshallton; a sister, Vera Clover and husband Archie of Michigan; five grandchildren, Ralph Pini III and wife Lynn, Denise Suppi, Carlo Pini and wife Carrie, Dawn Dodds and husband Kevin, and Amanda Zulkowski and husband Keith; eight great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Tyler, Megan, Randy, Cassidy, Abby, Kailee and Emma; and a great-great-granddaughter, Cami Lynn.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.

Herschel H. Quillen Jr., harness racer
Herschel Henry Quillen Jr., 80, of Dagsboro, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2009.
Herschel was born and raised in Dagsboro, son of the late Herschel Sr. and Pearl Quillen. He graduated from the Valley Forge Military Academy, class of 1947, and returned home to work on the family farm and in the harness racing business with his father. Herschel later retired from Vlasic Foods Inc.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mabel Quillen in 2004. Herschel is survived by his son, Herschel Quillen III of Wilmington; two daughters, Cindy Whaley and her husband Terry, and Nancy Smith and her husband Alan, all of Laurel; five grandchildren, Andrew Quillen, Francesca Quillen, Tracy Whaley Kennedy and her husband Matthew, Matthew Whaley and his wife Gina, and Scott Smith and his wife Lindsey; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Madison Smith. Herschel is also survived by a stepdaughter, Dyan Lynch and her husband Brasure; five stepsons, David Givans, Ron Givans, Jim Givans and his wife Cyndy, Gary Givans and his wife Carol, and Jeffrey Givans and his wife Sandra; and 10 step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at noon, Thursday, Feb. 5, at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville.

Allan M. Shafer, furniture painter
Allan M. Shafer, 89, of Harbeson, passed away at home Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009. Mr. Shafer was born in Greene, N.Y., the son of the late John and Ella Russell Shafer.
Mr. Shafer worked as a furniture painter for many years. He also owned and operated a lawn mower repair service in the Nassau area for many years.
He was a member of Lewes Church of Christ and enjoyed gardening, dancing and family gatherings.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Jessica Musa Shaffer, Jan. 3, 2009. He is survived by his children, Winfield Martin of Harbeson, Faith Gilmour and her husband James of St. Louis, Mo., Allanora Thompson and her husband Harry of Lewes, Margaret Rose Lloydell and her husband Marcus of Milford, Beverly Pratt, Kathy Pratt, Robert Shafer, and Diane Freelove; a stepson, Nathan Miller of Hallstead, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Sharon Smith of Oak Orchard; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the chapel of Lewes Church of Christ, 15183 Coastal Highway, Milton, where friends may call from noon to 1 p.m.

Lorraine T. Mirabella, loved animals
Lorraine T. Mirabella, 77, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, surrounded by her family.
Born in Norristown, Pa., Lorraine was the daughter of the late Alfred and Eva Picone Ivone. She worked several jobs over the years including librarian at St. Matthew’s School, a sales clerk at Bamberger’s, then Macy’s, and at Sharon’s Gift Shop in Stanton. Lorraine loved having large, noisy gatherings and holidays with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing, cross stitching, reading and spoiling her grandchildren. She would be found at Delaware Park playing the slots or out to lunch with several of her classmates from P.S. DuPont. She had a love for animals, even feeding peanuts to the neighborhood squirrels. She passed along her love for musicals and dinner theater to her daughters and granddaughters. She was devoted to St. Patrick’s Church, the Regina Coeli and our Blessed Virgin Mary.
Lorraine is survived by her husband of 55 years, Joseph J. Mirabella; her children, Joseph Jr. of Wilmington, David S. Sr. and his wife Carol of Lewes, Kathy Janocha and her husband Mark of Bear, Donna Crescenzo and her husband Jim of Bear, Sharon Mirabella of Bear, and Chris S. of Wilmington. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, David Jr., Stephen, James, Melissa, Nicholas, Samantha and Christina; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Nia; and a brother, Alfred Ivone of Newark.
Friends and family are invited to visitation from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Wilmington. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at St. Patrick’s Church, 15th and King streets, Wilmington. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Anne Marchlik, expert seamstress
Anne “Irish” Quinn Marchlik, 86, of Lewes died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, in Collingswood, N.J.
She was a devoted and much-loved wife, sister, mother, granny, neighbor, crafter and friend. She was married for 65 years to Victor; and was the sister of Sister Thomasann, OSF; the mother of Eileen Rehrmann of Baltimore, Md., Vicki (Terry) Lunghofer of Graham, Wash., Marianne (David) Virgilio of Brockport, N.Y., Dianne (Steve) Miller of Westmont, N.J., Mike (Jo Ann) Marchlik of Ridgewood, N.J., and Lisa (Pat) Lloyd of Pennsville, N.J; Granny to 16 grandchildren and Great-Granny to five.
Born in Chester, Pa., and raised in Delaware County, Anne served the World War II effort at the Gates Rubber Company in Denver, Colo. Returning to the Delaware County area, she raised her children, served as a Girl Scout leader, was active in St. Joseph’s Parish in Aston, Pa., worked part-time with several companies and retired to southern Delaware in 1983.
There, she became active in the Beebe Hospital Auxiliary and craft group. An expert seamstress and quilter, she was active in raising funds for Beebe through the annual craft show and was a member of St. Jude The Apostle Parish in Lewes.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Feb. 2, at St. Jude The Apostle Church, Lewes, with interment private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Enterprises Inc., Lewes.

Mabel L. Hudson, Dagsboro resident
Mabel L. Hudson, 84, of Dagsboro, went to her final resting place Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury, Md. She is survived by two daughters, Linda L. Price of Pittsville, Md., and Phyllis Bailey of Fruitland, Md.; a stepdaughter, Barbara Hudson of Bishopville, Md.; eight grandchildren, Tami Johnson of Salisbury, Ron Lewis of Willards, Md., Tiffany Bloodsworth of Pittsville, Tara Wolske and her husband Matt of Pittsville, David Mitchell and his wife Michelle of Dagsboro, Jerry Mitchell of Laurel, Dawn Mitchell of Fairfax, Va., John McBroom of Georgetown; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 2, in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Frankford, with burial in St. George’s Cemetery, Clarksville. Michael E. Matthews, Seaford native
Michael E. Matthews, of Bridgeville, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Michael was born Aug. 12, 1955, in Seaford to Nellie Matthews and the late Violitus Ingram.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Arnetta Matthews of Bridgeville; his mother, Nellie Matthews of Seaford; five daughters, Shaniece Cannon of Coverdale, Denise Drummond of Ellendale, Jeanica Laws of Lincoln, Jamacina Davis (Tony) of Orangeburg, S.C., and Tymone Banks (Robert) of Harrington; six sisters, Deborah Davis (Cordell) of Seaford, Bonnie McCray of Georgetown, Bethenia M. Drummond (Rudolph) of Millsboro, Gale T. Hodge (S.Q.) of Millsboro, Volette M. Ingram of Dover, Vanessa L. Ingram of Millsboro; aunts, Anna Matthews of Georgetown, Viola Matthews of Seaford, Geneva Pritchett of Mt. Holly, N.J., Nora Williams (Wayne) of Philadelphia, Pa.; mother-in-law, Carrie Drummond of Ellendale; sisters-in-law, Sherry White (Raymond) of Ellendale, Lacy Johns (Elijah) of Ellendale; brothers-in-law, Randolph Drummond (Doris) of Bridgeville, Thomas Drummond (Ruth) of Milford; 15 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four nieces; five nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.

Irene B. Struve, pianist, music teacher
Irene B. Struve, 84, of Millsboro, formerly of Wilmington, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.
Mrs. Struve was born in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of the late Millard and Carrie Bengtsen Bumgardner. She graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., with a bachelor’s degree in music education. After graduation, she taught piano to children and adults for 64 years.
She was also an accomplished pianist, accompanying many musicians throughout the years. At the age of 60, Mrs. Struve received her master’s degree in accompaniment from West Chester University, West Chester, Pa.
She served as a president of both the Delaware State Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association Eastern Division.
Mrs. Struve was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She adored her grandchildren Lisa Struve, Sarah Struve, Danny Sullivan and Bridget Sullivan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Doren Bumgardner in November 2008.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Omer Patrick Struve; her beloved Bichon, Katie; a son, Paul Struve and his wife Melanie of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Terry Struve and Shelley Sullivan and her husband Danny, all of Wilmington; and a sister, Betty Seymour, of Houston, Texas.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Delaware Hospice in Milford and the staff at Milford Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit for their kindness, compassion and caring toward Irene and her family.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, in Wilmington.

Robert J. Stanaitis, retired carpenter
Robert J. Stanaitis, 82, of Millsboro, formerly of Aston, Pa., passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at the Renaissance Health Care Center in Millsboro.
He was born in Kulpmont, Pa., son of the late John and Emily Laskoski Stanaitis.
Robert was a retired carpenter and served with the United States Navy during World War II.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert Jr.; sisters, Evelyn and Helena; brothers, Leonard, Raymond and Hubert.
He is survived by his loving wife, Anna M. Stanaits; his children, Elaine McGroerty, John Stanaitis, Ann Marie Moore, Richard Stanaitis; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Richard ‘Ricky’ Hazzard, supervising manager
Richard Burton “Ricky” Hazzard, 38, of Ocala, Fla.,and formerly of Milton, died tragically in an automobile accident in Weeki Wachee, Fla., Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009.
Ricky was the son of Melissa L. Wilkerson of Citrus Springs, Fla,. and Richard M. Hazzard of Milford.
Ricky was a 1988 graduate of Cape Henlopen High School and had attended the University of Delaware.
He was currently employed with AT&T Mobility in Ocala as a supervising manager and had been with the company for the past five-and-a-half years.
Prior to moving to Florida in 2003, Mr. Hazzard was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Lewes.
Mr. Hazzard’s hobbies included cooking and gardening. He was also a computer wizard and loved exploring and solving computer problems both at work and at home.
His maternal grandparents, Allen and Margaret James and Everett M. “Hick” Wilkerson, of Milton; and paternal grandparents, Walter and Jean Hazzard, of Milford, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Melissa Wilkerson and Bruce Schlimme of Citrus Springs; father and stepmother, Richard and Carla Hazzard of Milford; his identical twin brother, Robert E. Hazzard of Tampa, Fla.; and his life partner, Michael Berrettini of Ocala.
Rick is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in Delaware and all his friends that he acquired since relocating to Florida.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 5, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.
