Charles Francis Flynn, NYC native
Charles Francis Flynn, 78, born Feb. 11, 1931, in New York City, N.Y., passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Cadbury Continuing Care Retirement Community in Lewes.
A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, April 16, at Gallery 50 in Rehoboth Beach.
Memorial contributions may be made in Charles’ memory to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19947.

Joseph F. Becker, Navy veteran
Joseph F. Becker, 74, of Ulysses, Pa., formerly of Newark, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. His family was by his side.
Born June 6, 1934, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he married the former H. Elizabeth “Betty” Talley. Joe served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954 on the USS Mindoro as a yellow shirt. Following his honorable discharge, he worked at All American Engineering and Thiokol prior to his employment with the U.S. Postal Service in Newark. In 1962 he started as a temporary letter carrier and retired in 1989 after serving for 15 years as postmaster. He served as Delaware president of NAPUS and one term as national vice president of NAPUS. In Delaware, Joe was active with Little League baseball and the Boy Scouts of America for over 20 years.
In 1990 he and his wife moved to Ulysses, Pa. Joe was an active member of St. Bibiana’s Catholic Church in Galeton, Pa. He also served for many years as adjutant of Carl E. Hyde American Legion Post 963 in Ulysses and as secretary-treasurer of the Potter County Honor Guard. Most recently, after several years of state recognized excellence, Joe retired as Potter County director of Veterans Affairs.
Surviving are a daughter, Dawn (Dennis) Huss of Rehoboth Beach; three sons, Allen J. Becker of Newark, Jerry G. Becker of Ulysses, and Phillip R. (Catherine) Becker of Newark; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Evelyn Thompson and Charlotte Klinger, both of Phoenixville, Pa. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Harold; and a sister, Arlene Hughes.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 4, at Holy Family Church, Gender Road, Newark. Private burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
Memorials may be made to the Potter County Hospice, 1001 East Second St., Coudersport, PA 16915.

Joseph C. Lingo, former Millsboro mayor
Joseph C. Lingo, 91, of Millsboro, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
He was born Sept. 25, 1917, in Millsboro where he lived his entire life.
During his youth he became an Eagle Scout and later a scout leader, taking boys on local scouting trips and jamborees out west.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a lifetime member and former fire chief of the Millsboro Volunteer Fire Company and a former mayor of Millsboro. He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Millsboro.
He loved to travel and told stories of adventures with friends years ago in Cuba and elsewhere. He and his wife traveled all over the United States, Mexico and Canada in their camper and also took train trips together. After her death, he enjoyed cruises.
Joe had a long career with the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He enjoyed his home and yard, Tiger Valley, and eating with friends in the local restaurants through the years.
He had a remarkable memory, telling many colorful stories about Sussex County families and history.
He was predeceased by his wife, Olive Hitchens Lingo; his daughter, Patricia Lawson; his parents, Clarence and Rida Lingo; his sister, Jeannette Collins; and his brother, Clarence Lingo.
He is survived by his grandson, Tom Lawson II; great-grandson, Dylan T. Lawson; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, April 3, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Millsboro. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m., Friday at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services in Millsboro. Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Joseph’s memory to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 422, Millsboro DE 19966.

Herbert F. Austin, enjoyed fishing
Herbert F. Austin, 79, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Christiana Hospital in Newark.
He was born July 23, 1929, in Springfield, Mass., the son of the late Herbert W. and Marcia Foster Austin.
Previously of Homer, N.Y., Mr. Austin retired to Delaware in 1990.
He enjoyed fishing, working in his yard and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Angela W. Austin; four sons, Kenneth Austin and his wife Sharon of Erin, N.Y., William Austin and his wife Donna of Kirkville, N.Y., Lawrence Austin of Homer, and Tom Austin of Blades; two daughters, Karen Higgins of Wilmington and Jodi Randall of Bentonville, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one grandson, Kenny Austin.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Lewes.

Nan Keller Makowski, devoted homemaker
Nan Keller Makowski, 79, of Seaford, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at home surrounded by her loving family of Parkinson’s disease.
Born in Cressona, Pa., Aug. 6, 1929, Nan was the daughter of the late George R. Keller and Blanche Mcllwain Keller.
Nan was a graduate of Southern High School of Baltimore, Md., in 1947, and worked four years at Baltimore Gas and Electric Company while her husband was attending Western Maryland College under the G.I. Bill. She lived in Pennsylvania and Maryland before coming to Seaford in February 1952 and was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother.
Nan was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church, taught Sunday school, served on various church committees, and was a member of the LWML organization.
She was a Cub Scout leader, worked at the Nanticoke Little League concession stand for years and made braided rugs, caned chairs and cross-stitched in her spare time.
She had a lifelong interest in collecting and refinishing antiques, collected Fiestaware and was an avid reader of many books. She was a world traveler and especially enjoyed touring Russia and China.
Nan took several cross-country motorcycle trips with her son, Tom, over the years. Around Seaford she was known for her love of bicycle riding.
Besides her parents, Nan was predeceased by a brother, Capt. Robert G. Keller, U.S. Navy. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Ernest J. Makowski of Seaford; her sons, Michael A. Makowski and his wife Traci of Millsboro, and Thomas E. Makowski and his wife Patricia A. Gallagher of Winchester, Idaho; her grandsons, Jeremy and Jesse Makowski, also of Millsboro; her brother, Karl E. Keller and his wife Mary Alice of Forest Hill, Md.; her sister-in-law, Mary Belle Keller-Craw of Davidson, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, April 3, at Christ Lutheran Church, 315 Shipley St, Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Daniel ‘Bob’ Hastings, Sussex farmer
Daniel Robert “Bob” Hastings, 83, of Lewes died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Milton, the son of the late J. Harry and Caddie (Marvel) Hastings.
He was a farmer and was also a brick mason for George Chapel.
He was a member of Whites Chapel Church, the United Methodist Men and the Gideons. He enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sarah Clifton Hastings; a daughter, Kathleen Panuska; grandchildren, Traci and Bart Goldberg of Millsboro and stepgranddaughter, Megan Panuska of Wilmington; two nieces, Betty Chapel of Lewes and Betty Jane Eiseman and her husband Rick of Rehoboth Beach; and two nephews, Jimmy Hastings and his wife Teresa of Lewes and Keith Hastings and his wife Terri of Georgetown.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 4, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Interment will be in Whites Chapel Cemetery.
