Carl Dickerson, Legion, VFW member
Carl Dickerson, 76, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, in Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.
He was the son of the late Charles Dickerson and Jennie Dickerson. His son, Karl “Butch” Dickerson, preceded him in death. Mr. Dickerson served in the Army during the Korean War and worked at Blue Hen Spring Works in Milford for years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lewes and Milton.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Short Dickerson; one daughter, Bonnie Chasanov; three grandchildren, William M. Chasanov II, Matthew A. Chasanov and Shae Chasanov Diluzio; and two great-grandchildren, Drew and Elizabeth Chasanov. Services will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 9, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Burial will be private.

Betty J. West, Sussex homemaker
Betty J. West, 79, of Millsboro, died Thursday, April 2, 2009.
She was born July 1, 1929, to the late Lawrence and Helen Baker Joseph. Betty was a homemaker. Her interests revolved all around her family, which was her main concern. She enjoyed mystery shows and crossword puzzles. She adored her family, which was her entire world. She loved watching deer, and her gardens and rosebushes. She was deeply loved by her family, and will be greatly missed.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband Clifford in 2003; and a brother, Lawrence Joseph.
She is survived by one son, Steven West and his wife Theresa of Georgetown; two daughters, Lutitia West of Millsboro and Sandra Beatty of Laurel. She is also survived by a sister, Joyce West of Bridgeville; two grandchildren, Cody and Shelby; and many close friends and extended family. She is also survived by her feline friend, “Maggie.”
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Kenny Dodd will officiate. Flowers are welcome.

Cecilia Rose Mucha, talented homemaker
Cecilia Rose Mucha, 87, formerly of New Castle, longtime resident of Churchman Village in Stanton, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at Christiana Hospital in Newark.
Cecilia was born Stanislava Ochenkowski on June 12, 1921, in Wilmington and was a 1939 graduate of Wilmington High School, where she excelled in art. She was a talented homemaker throughout her life but also worked for the Wilmington Railroad during World War II and as an Avon representative in the 1970s. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in New Castle and the Parish of Saint Ann in Bethany Beach. Cecilia was also a longtime member of the Howard Weston Senior Center.
Her husband of 49 years, Edward Mucha Sr., died in 1991. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Stanislaw and Feliksa Pierwsza Ochenkowski; sisters, Catherine and Irene Ochenkowski, Helen Popper and Jeanette Draper; and brother, Henry Ochenkowski.
She is survived by her children, Edward Mucha Jr. and wife Ellen of Lewes, Ronald Mucha of New Castle, Robert Mucha and wife Therese of Harrington, Cecilia Hirata and husband Spencer of Chadds Ford, Pa., and John Mucha of Wilmington; grandchildren, Christopher, Donna, Eric, Madison and Molly; and great-grandchildren, Vernon III, Connor, Megan, Katie and Julie.
The family extends their gratitude to the nursing and aide staff at Churchman Village for years of dedicated care given to their mother. They especially thank Shelly Leigh Funk and Anita Harding for their thoughtful care and compassion that always brought a smile to their mother’s face.
Friends may call 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 7, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.

Kathy Carla King, loved old movies
Kathy Carla King, 57, of Dover, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.
She was born Feb. 29, 1952, in Dover. Kathy was a very special young lady with a very happy and exuberant smile. She at times could be strong-willed and could be very independent. She enjoyed watching old movies and television shows, especially “Little House on the Prairie.” She loved the attention and companionship she had with her cat, Tiger.
Kathy is survived by her mother, Nancy Wright; her father, Carl King and his wife Carol of Stuart, Fla., and Lewes; brother, Bruce King and his wife Cathy of Lewes; and two half brothers, C.P. King of Lincoln, and David Wright of Norristown, Pa.; Emma “Mom Mom” Harding of Lincoln; nieces and nephews, Katelyn King, Justin King, Nicole Wright and Dylan Wright; and an extended family of aunts, uncles and friends.
The family wishes the services to be a private time and appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers during that time. Burial will be in the family plot at Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.

Robert Manson, retired businessman
Robert Manson, 93, of Milton, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
A native of the metropolitan area, he owned a successful business for 25 years and was an active member of the Lions Club. He retired with his wife to Milton in 1978. Although he came late to the computer age, he explored the internet and converted over 1,000 cassette tapes to CDs prior to his passing.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Etta; his son, John and his wife Deborah; and his grandchildren, Joseph and Olivia of Bowie, Md.; his daughter Stacy of Milton; his sister Virginia Banks of College Park, Md.; his sister Shirley Townsend of Stevensville, Md.; as well as countless other family and friends.
There will be no funeral, memorial service or wake. Interment will be private. Memorial gifts will be accepted gratefully by Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963. The family expresses its gratitude for their loving care of Robert during his illness.

Charles F. Flynn, resort resident
Charles Francis Flynn, 78, born Feb. 11, 1931, in New York City, N.Y., passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Cadbury Continuing Care Retirement Community in Lewes.
Please join the family in a celebration of his life from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, April 16, at Gallery 50, 50 Wilmington Ave., Rehoboth Beach. All are welcome.

Frank J. Noderer Sr., Lewes retiree
Frank J. Noderer Sr., 88, of Lewes, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
He was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Baltimore, Md., son of the late Michael and Antonie Krueger Noderer.
Mr. Noderer enjoyed a long career with the state of Maryland, retiring as chief of the Department of Labor and Industry. He and his wife of 52 years have been year-round residents of Delaware since 1986. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Lewes and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Noderer is survived by his wife Elizabeth Brender Noderer; three sons, Peter Edward Knight and his wife Kay of Sabillasville, Md., Michael Anthony Noderer and his wife Sharon of Indian Head, Md., and Frank J. Noderer Jr. and his wife Debbie of Mt. Holly, N.C.; three daughters, Margaret Ann Cunningham and her husband Jack of Panama City, Fla., Leona E. Noderer of Lewes, and Nancy E. Decker and her husband Rich of Halethorpe, Md.; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
A Chapel Committal Service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. Entombment will follow.

Brenda L. Smallwood, devoted mother
Brenda L, Williams Smallwood, 68, of Milton, passed away suddenly at home, Sunday April 5, 2009. She was born Jan. 9, 1941, to Carson and Lulamae Todd in Berlin, Md. Brenda worked for Wilgus Dry Cleaners on Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, for more than 20 years and was a devoted employee, until her retirement in 2006. She was referred to lovingly in the town as the “the Mayor,” because of her social and business associations with the people of Rehoboth Beach. If there was anything going on in town, Brenda knew about it, good or bad.
She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Brenda found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren and cooking for her family and friends. She also loved to crochet blankets for her grandchildren and friends and enjoyed gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Jerry Todd. She is survived by her two children, Thomas Williams of Rehoboth Beach, and Lisa W. Moore of Lewes; her grandchildren, Tonya Wharton, Ashley Moore, Taylor Moore, Dayton Moore, Blake Moore and Sydney Moore; also her best friend of over 40 years, Gayl Hyland; and her beloved pet cat Hadley. Services will be announced at a later date.

Francis Hammond Sr., retired machinist
Francis Joseph "Buck" Hammond Sr. died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Renaissance Nursing Home, Millsboro, under the care of Delaware Hospice. Born Dec. 29, 1921, in Wilmington, to John and Nora Hammond, he served with the Navy in World War II and was a machinist at the DuPont Co. Experimental Station in Wilmington for 35 years. After retiring in 1983, he and his beloved wife, Ida DiRico Hammond, split their time between their homes in North Wilmington and Old Landing, Rehoboth Beach. After Ida's death in 1995, he moved to the Rehoboth Beach home where he enjoyed fishing, puttering, crossword puzzles, politics and hosting family and friends. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother John Hammond of Sebastian, Fla. Survivors include two sons and a daughter, Frank Hammond of Tierra Verde, Fla., David Hammond and wife Lynn of St. Pete Beach, Fla., and Eileen Hammond Weigel and husband George Alex Weigel of Wilmington; five grandchildren, Kristen Dandurand, James Hammond, David and Philip Weigel, Heidi LaPlant; two great-grandchildren: Chloe and Will Dandurand; and daughter-in-law, Chris Hammond of Wilmington.
All services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Enterprises Inc., Lewes.
