Dorothy S. Smith, Woolworth retiree
Dorothy S. Smith, 78, of Seaford, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at home.
Mrs. Smith retired from the Woolworth store in Seaford. She was a member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church in Reliance.
Her husband, Robert A. Smith, died Dec. 31, 2008. She is survived by three daughters, Sharon Insley and her husband James of Cambridge, N.J., Cathaleen Guessford of Cambridge, and Donna Curry of Millsboro; three grandchildren, Lisa Tarbutton, Amber Curry and Robert Chase Curry; and five great-grandchildren, James, April Victoria, Kayla and William Tarbutton. Her brother Charles Sapid also survives Dorothy.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, at Blades Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to Delaware Hospice Inc., 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; or Gethsemane United Methodist Church, 2701 Woodland Ferry Rd., Seaford, DE 19973.

William ‘Tom’ Avery, retired police officer
William “Tom” T. Avery, 70, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford surrounded by his family.
He was born Oct. 3, 1938, in Washington, D.C., son of the late Robert M. and Evelyn Aney Avery.
Mr. Avery was a proud police officer of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., for 20 years, retiring in 1981 as a sergeant. In 1998, he and his wife moved from Laurel, Md., to Lewes where he enjoyed crab feasts, gardening and the Washington Redskins. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1962. He was a member of AMVETS in Long Neck and a member of the Elks in Maryland and in Lewes.
Mr. Avery is survived by his wife of 21 years, Patricia M. Hanyok Avery; two daughters, Christine Carol LoBiondo and her husband Richard of Collegeville, Pa., and Kelly Rose Avery of Lewes; three sons, Thomas Mitchell Avery and his wife Denise of Frisco, Texas, Gregory Thomas Avery and his wife Tonya of Double Oak, Texas, and Zachary Robert Avery of Lewes; seven grandchildren, Kimberly, Matthew, Nicole, Abigayle, Austin, Gabrielle and Sydney; two sisters, Nancy C. Darling and her husband Lewis of Dawsonville, Ga., and Judith E. Johnson and her husband Clifford of Locust Grove, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert H. Avery.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 28, at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes; interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Dagsboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963 or to Lewes Fire Department Inc., P.O. Box 225, Lewes, DE 19958.

Viola ‘Vicki’ Cahill, registered nurse
Viola P. “Vicki” Cahill, 74, of Lewes, formerly of Newark, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Cahill was born Nov. 19, 1934, in Bayshore, N.Y., daughter of the late Erwin and Martha Kasper Allgauer. Vicki was a registered nurse for Christiana Care Hospital in Newark, retiring Dec. 13, 1996, after 40 years of service. She was deeply devoted to her family and was very service oriented after her retirement to Lewes in 1997. Mrs. Cahill volunteered at Casa San Francisco in Milton, was a member of TOPS, the Women’s Club at Angola-By-The-Bay and she enjoyed playing pinochle.
Vicki is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Robert J. Cahill; five children, Patricia Mareé Mason and her husband Richard of Newark, Kevin Patrick Cahill and his wife Cindy of Elkton, Md., Paul Joseph Cahill and his wife Wendy of Fair Hill, Md., Susan Mareé Murphy and her husband Dave of Bear, and Kara Mareé Ritter and her husband Doug of Millsboro; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 29, at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, Oak Orchard Road, Millsboro. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Vicki’s name to Casa San Francisco, P.O. Box 40, Milton, DE 19968.

William A. LaFond, Rehoboth resident
William A. LaFond, 70, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009, at his residence.
He was born July 15, 1938, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Edmund and Leona Minogue LaFond.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Quay LaFond of Rehoboth Beach; daughter, Michelle LaFond of Wilmington; sister, Mary Jean DelCampo of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Robert J. LaFond and his wife Christine of Ocean City, Md.; and several nieces and a nephew. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Edmund R. LaFond in 2007.
All services will be private.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Enterprises Inc., Lewes.

Emma C. Bender, loved bowling
Emma C. Bender, 77, of Milton, formerly of Edgewood, Md., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family members Friday, April 24, 2009, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore..
Emma was the daughter of the late Emita Edwards and Enrique Cambra of Panama City, Panama, where she was born in 1932. She had gone to Panama in February 2008 where she was able to visit her birthplace and be surrounded by her aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was accompanied on this trip by her children and her grandson.
Emma was a bowler for more than 40 years, something she loved to do up until she became ill in April. She also did volunteer work at Beebe Hospital in Lewes for about 20 years.
Emma is survived by her adoring husband of 58 years, Raymond Bender Sr.; three children, R. Dale Bender Jr. of Abington, Md., Linda Bender Huss of Georgetown and Richard Bender and his wife Carla of Elkton, Md. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Raven Bender of Edgewood, Md., Joshua Huss of Dewey Beach and Ashley Huss of Georgetown; two step-grandsons of Elkton, Md.; and seven great-granddaughters.
Emma adored her family and was a beacon of love and strength to all who knew her. She will be sadly missed.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 29, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro. A private graveside service will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Emma's name to Special Olympics of Delaware, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716-1901.
