Lt. Col. Samuel Arnold, earned bronze star
Lt. Col. Samuel Morgan Arnold, 92, a native Delawarean, departed this life Saturday, May 23, 2009.
A graduate of the University of Delaware, he joined the Army Reserves, serving his country in World War II and post-war Korea as well as teaching military science at Delaware State College.
He earned a bronze star as an anti-aircraft artillery officer in the XIII Corps in 1945. He always cherished the time he spent in post-war Korea as especially gratifying for the personal connections he made with the people of that country.
He served as an elder at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church and, after retirement, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rehoboth Beach.
He co-founded Donahue Color Service in the early 1960s, was active with the YMCA “Y’s Men” and Indian Guide programs and the Delaware Rose Society. In Rehoboth, he spent his free time serving Meals On Wheels and taking pictures for Stockley Center, Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary, Camp Arrowhead and Special Olympics. He was also active in the Retired Officers Club of Rehoboth Beach.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, whom he dearly missed; and his sons, Stephen and David. He is survived by his daughter, the Rev. Nanese Hawthorne; son and wife, Tim and Becky Arnold; daughter and husband, Perrie and Robert Carrow; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A gathering will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 27, at McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike Wilmington. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m., at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 500 McKennans Church Road, Wilmington,

William J. Kairis, retired driver
William J. Kairis of Lewes, 85, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Harbor Healthcare, Lewes.
He was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa. William served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II and also had worked as a truck driver. He leaves no known survivors.
Services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 26, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. Arrangements are by Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming.

Casmira Wolski, enjoyed sewing
Casmira Wolski, 85, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Delaware Hospice in Milford.
Born June 23, 1923, to the late Sophie Gebarouski and Kazimierz Dzedzej, she was a graduate of Immaculate Heart High School.
She married Walter Wolski Aug. 12, 1945, and worked at Chester Housing Authority for 28 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Mary Mother of Peace Church, Millsboro, Angola by the Bay Women’s Club and the American Legion of Lewes. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and gardening.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Walter Wolski.
She is survived by one brother, Henry Dzedzej of Lewes; and three daughters, Geraldine Welch of Lewes, Diane Cohle of West Chester, Pa., and Annette Bansbach of Chesterfield, Va.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be after 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 26, at Kaniefski-Kendus-D’Anjollel Memorial Home, 3900 West 9th St., Trainer, Pa., followed by a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at Saint Hedwig’s, 4th and Hayes streets, Chester, Pa. Burial will be at Immaculate Heart Cemetery, Linwood, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Frederick H. Calladine, Air Force retiree
Lt. Col. Frederick H. Calladine, 84, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, at his residence with his loving family by his side.
Lt. Col. Calladine was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Frederick H. Calladine Sr. and Florence (Sheard) Calladine.
He served with the U.S. Air Force for more than 27 years, retiring as a leiutenant colonel with the Defense Intelligence Agency. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Edith (Marr) Calladine; a son, Guy D. Calladine and his wife Maggie of San Francisco, Calif.; three daughters, Christine Beal and her husband William of Alexandria, Va., Patricia McCallister and her husband James of Spartanburg, S.C., and Kathryn Landauer and her husband Mark of Portland, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a loving sister-in-law, Catherine Gibson of Georgetown.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Ft. Myer Chapel, at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 27; entombment will follow at the Columbarium.
Please omit flowers. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Rachel D. Gray, psychology major
Rachel D. Gray, 21, of Milton, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009.
Rachel graduated from Sussex Tech, Georgetown class of 2006 and attended Immaculata University majoring in psychology during 2006-07. She worked for three years at Pacific Sunwear in Rehoboth. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather Melvin Gray.
She was a student of Delaware Music School and participated in the Odyssey of the Mind for Sussex Academy of Arts and Science and was a chorus member. She was awarded third place in 2006 for the Sussex Tech competition of auto body technology. She is survived by her father, Rodger P. Gray of Florida; and her mother, Sharon D. Mallory-Gray of Milton. She is also survived by maternal grandparents Rose Smiley of Newark and Robert Mallory of Fairhope, Ala.; and a paternal grandmother, Vernice Gray of Baltimore, Md.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday May 26, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Interment will be Odd Fellows Cemetery Milton. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to defray funeral expenses.

Louise T. Trussell, world traveler
Louise Thrall Trussell, 87, passed peacefully at her daughter’s Milton home surrounded by family members and her card buddies Thursday, May 21, 2009.
She was the wife of Howard Marshall Trussell, with whom she shared 49 years of marriage. He predeceased her in 1991. Born Oct. 11, 1921, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Walter H. and Carrie Bird (Moser) Thrall. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington. Married in December, 1941, World War II kept the couple apart for most of the following four years. After their reunion at the end of the war, three daughters and one son were born over the next 10 years. Louise was an avid bridge player and a homemaker extraordinaire, actively participating in the lives of her family. She was active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. At the age of 50, when her husband became the civilian chief of logistics for the Department of Defense in Okinawa, Japan, she took her first plane ride to get there and from then on until the year before her death, she traveled the world. Louise was involved for years with the Embroiderer’s Guild of America and studied silk embroidery with master craftsmen from Japan and China, exhibiting her work many times and was recognized as an outstanding craftswoman herself. She also mastered Scandinavian-style Hardanger embroidery. After returning from Okinawa, she and Howard lived in Reston, Va., and Columbia, Md. After Howard died, she lived for 14 years in Minnetonka, Minn., near her son and his family.
She is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Babcock and husband William of Renton, Wash., a daughter, Adrienne Scott of Milton, a son, Howard Trussell Jr. and wife Marti of Fargo, N.D., and daughter, Pamela Quam of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren, Gretchen Coulthurst and husband Rob, Jessie Babcock, Adam Scott, Diana Trussell, Domineque Scott and Glenn Trussell; and great-grandsons, Ethan and Evan Coulthurst.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 26, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, Interment will be private. Alfred C. ‘Curt’ Smith, Lowe’s employee
Alfred C. “Curt” Smith, 60, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, May 19, 2009, surrounded by his family.
Curt worked for Lowe’s for the past 17 years. He was a graduate of John Dickinson High School and attended Goldey-Beacom. He was a NASCAR and Grand Am racing fan, an army veteran of the Vietnam War and enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Janis Smith; his son, Matthew Smith of Wilmington; his daughter, Tracy Donahue and her husband George of Bear; his grandson, Nathan; his mother, Verna Smith of Wilmington; his sisters, Dorothy Gedney of Wilmington and Carrie Bolen and her husband Bill of Newark; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Margaret Rimmer of Kennett Square, Pa.; and his mother-in-law, Marjorie Rimmer of Newark, recently of Long Neck. A service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 26, at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek, where friends may call at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
