Charles Simpson, Eagles fan
Charles J. "Charlie" Simpson, age 71, of Lewes, DE, loving husband of Arline, died suddenly at Beebe Hospital on Thursday, May 28, 2009. He was born September 17, 1937 in Wilmington, DE, son of the late Charles Edward and Sarah Helen (Hogan) Simpson.
Charlie was a man of great honor, a loving husband, father and grandfather. He always had a smile on his face for all who knew him. A man of many talents who could fix almost anything. Known as one of the best fisherman around and one that fish feared, he could be found in his red truck parked between the Rehoboth Twin Towers. He was an avid sports fan of Notre Dame, the Phillies and a diehard Eagles fan. His children and step children loved him and he was the best PopPop to 21 grandchildren. Charlie was employed by the State of Delaware DART as a Facilities Manager. We'll miss our lucky Irish Man!
He is survived by his wife Arline L. Simpson; two brothers, Daniel Simpson and wife Eileen and Raymond Simpson; his sister, Joyce Held and husband Ken; children: Chip Simpson and wife Donna, Mike Simpson and wife Patti, Sue Nass and husband Eric, Sharon McQuaide and husband Jim; and Sally Simpson; step-children: Mike Masiello, Lynne Meyer and husband Jim, Gayle Seker and husband Greg, Ann Naar and husband Dave; grandchildren: Josh, Lainey, Emily, Colleen, Michael, Kevin, Connor, Lauren, Bridget, Brendan, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Erin, Allie, Nicholas, Robert, Shep, David, Jillian, Sarah and Zachary.

Judith Truitt Rice, Delaware native
Judith Truitt Rice, 61, of Elkton, Md., passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009, at her residence.
Mrs. Rice was born June 15, 1947, in Newark, to the late Fletcher and Katherine Truitt.
She is survived by her husband, Dwayne Rice of Elkton; sons, David Fisher of Elkton, Michael and Becky Fisher of Roanoke, Va., and Robert and Dawn Fisher of Zion, Md.; brothers, Fletcher Truitt Jr. of Rehoboth Beach, and Richard Truitt of Elkton; granddaughters, Ashley, Caitlyn and Anna Fisher; and grandsons, Robert and David Fisher.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 30, at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St., Newark, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

William J. Bonine Jr., DuPont retiree
William J. Bonine Jr., 79, of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mr. Bonine was born Nov. 10, 1929, in Upper Darby, Pa., to the late William and Ethel Miller Bonine. He was a 1947 graduate of Haverford High School and a 1951 graduate of Bucknell University with a BS in chemical engineering where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Chi Sigma. He had served for a period of time in the Pennsylvania National Guard. His career for 37 years involved work with the DuPont Company at various sites, retiring in 1988. Mr. Bonine was an avid golfer and member of the Seaford Golf and Country Club; enjoyed tennis and bowling; had served the Nanticoke Little League baseball organization in Seaford as a team manager and on the board, as well as serving on the District 1 staff for 34 years and as tournament director at various times. His public service also involved serving for 16 years on the Seaford Planning and Zoning Commission. He and his wife were members of Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth Beach.
He is survived by his wife whom he married in 1952, Joan Graham Bonine; daughter, Linda Rogers and husband Steve of Wyoming; and son, Steven Bonine and wife Eileen of Thornton, Pa.; and seven grandchildren, Brian, Heather, Alex, Amanda, Alyssa, Amy and Hannah.
All services will be private with interment in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; or to Seaford Little League, PO Box 274, Seaford, DE 19973.

Aaron Poulson, New Jersey resident
Aaron Poulson, 71, of Millville, N.J., passed away quietly and peacefully Thursday, May 21, 2009. Born May 6, 1938, in Northampton County, Va., he was the son of the late Jesse Poulson Sr. and the late Margaret Taylor Bailey.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 30, at the Friendship Baptist Church, Lewes, where friends may call two hours prior.
Interment will be in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Lewes.

Marian W. Hopkins, Nanticoke member
Marian Wright Hopkins, 75, of Millsboro was born Feb. 25, 1934, in Cedarville, N.J., and departed this life Monday, May 25, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. Besides being the matriarch of her loving family, she was a Delaware Technical & Community College graduate and a member of the Nanticoke Indian Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Clifford Wright Sr. and Helen Reed Wright; and two brothers, Edward Sylvester Wright and Harry Clifford Wright Jr.
She leaves to mourn her four children, Wanda Lynette Hopkins, William Jeffrey Hopkins (Keetie), Shari Danette Harris (Marvin) and Marcary Dermott Hopkins (Tina); six grandchildren, A. Jermaine Hopkins, Tawanya Hutchins (Antoine), Estonya Hopkins, Latosha White, Shanette White and Justin Adams; nine great-grandchildren, Chartel Hopkins, Armyiah Hopkins, Jordan Webb, Anaya Hutchins, Lonce’ Silva, Isaiah Silva, Tayana Silva, Malek Hopkins and Aniya Harmon; two sisters, Phyllis Edwards and Elaine Wright; two brothers, William A. Wright and Robert L. Wright (Pat); sister-in-law Marion Wright; two special nieces, Queenie and Nettie, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Harry H. Isaacs Sr., family businessman
Harry H. Isaacs Sr., 92, of Milton, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, in his home.
Mr. Isaacs was born in Prime Hook Neck, son of the late John S. and Mary Lofland Isaacs and was a lifelong resident of Sussex County.
Mr. Isaacs had headed several family corporations and was associated with agriculture until retirement.
He served as director of the former First National Bank of Milford and was responsible for its merger with Wilmington Trust. After the merger, he was offered a seat on the main board in Wilmington.
Mr. Isaacs was Tree Farmer of the Year in 1976 and in 1964 was a Delaware Department of Agriculture representative to Russia.
He attended five schools: Prime Hook, Broadkill, Lewes, Georgetown and graduated from Milton in 1936.
He was a member of Goshen United Methodist Church and was a past member of the board of trustees. He was also a member of the Delaware Farm Bureau and the Million Dollar Club of Ralston Purina and Beacom Feed companies.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lingo Isaacs, in 2006; a sister, Dorothy Hall; and two brothers, Howard and Earle Isaacs.
He is survived by two children, Harry H. “Hobby” Isaacs Jr. and wife Teresa of Ellendale, and Sara Kay Phillips and husband Robert of Milford; four grandchildren, Harry H. “Trey” Isaacs III of Ellendale, Thomas B. Isaacs of Milton, Marlyn French of Lewes and Lisa Brown of Milford; and five great-grandchildren, Jackson Isaacs, Gavin Isaacs, Ethan Isaacs, Erin Brown and Christopher Brown.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 30, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton where friends may call after 11 a.m. Burial will be in Milford Community Cemetery, Milford.

Ella Mary Hall Jewell, loved karaoke
Ella Mary Hall Jewell, 78, of Millsboro, wife of Luther F. Jewell Sr., who preceded her in death, passed away Memorial Day Monday, May 25, 2009, after a long illness. Ella and Luke were married for 55 years before he passed in 2001.
She worked for many years as a medical claims approver for Met Life and she retired early. She loved karaoke, dancing, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast and was talented on the piano, organ, and guitar.
She was the daughter of Kathryn E. Hall and previously deceased Master Sgt. John J. Hall Sr. She was the oldest of four siblings - two brothers, one previously deceased, John J. Hall Jr. and Robert J. Hall and a previously deceased sister Elizabeth A. McGinnis.
She was the proud mother of three children, a son, Luther Franklin Jewell Jr. and his wife Faith; daughter Dale Malandruccolo (widowed); and her youngest son, Frank Lee Davenport; eight grandchildren, Donald W. Holden and wife Barbie, Steven A. Melson Jr. and wife Tracy, Kerri A. Sharpless and husband Kenneth, Renee L. Jewell, Kelly M. Greer and husband Christopher, Megan Jewell, Whitney Jewell and Kristin Jewell; and great-grandchildren, Tiffany Blanchette, Taylor Greer, C.J. Greer, Donald Holden, Eddie Ariza, twins Joseph and Shawnee Bonderant, Steven N. Melson, and soon to be Jayden Greer. She was a beautiful person inside and out; she was loved by all who knew her and will be surely missed by many.
Services will be noon, Friday, May 29, at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour before the service. The Rev. Robert Hudson will officiate. Interment will be in Millsboro Cemetery.

Grant Ulrich Stiner Jr., Rehoboth retiree
Grant Ulrich Stiner Jr., born July 31, 1921, passed away after a long illness Thursday, April 9, 2009.
A longtime resident of Baltimore, Md., he retired to Rehoboth Beach in 2003.
Burial will be at Old Trinity Church Cemetery, located on Route 16, one mile west of Church Creek, Md., at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 13. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to hospice in his name.

Bessie Upole-Sherrill, devout Christian
Bessie Helen Upole-Sherrill, 102, of Wilmington, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at her residence.
Mrs. Upole-Sherrill was born in Deer Park, Md., June 27, 1906, daughter of the late Thomas McRobie and Jessie Collins McRobie. A talented homemaker, she greatly enjoyed sewing, cooking, and baking. She was a devout Christian throughout her life and was very active in church work with the Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Clark Upole; second husband, Virgil Sherrill; son, Charles Upole Jr.; daughter, Elaine Triplett; and sister, Beulah Holland. She is survived by her daughters, Betty Snow of Lewes and husband Coy Snow of Elsmere; and Joanne Rohm and husband Joe of Newark; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 29, at Church Hill Cemetery, Springer Road, McClellandtown, Pa.

Hazel M. Pedano, 95, of Millsboro, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, at her son Robert A. Pedano’s home.
A Phillies fan, she was the daughter of the late George H. and Harriet C. Robinson Shaw; wife of the late Anthony; mother of Robert A. Pedano (Bill McFarland) and the late Dolly Jean; grandmother of Dawn (Chuck) Hall, Lori (Randy) Lane, and Jill (Jim) Robbins; great-grandmother of Toby (Krissy) and Kristi Hall (Jason), Jenn (David) Tassler, Noah Dillard, Randy Lane (Ashley), and Zachary and Matthew Jenney; great-great-grandmother of Miryam Tassler, Monica Lane and Hayden Hall; former mother-in-law of Sandra (Robert) Glaser. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Dr. G. Russell Shaw, Harry L. Shaw, Marcus Shaw, William Shaw, George Shaw and Charles Shaw; and her sisters, Harriet C. Stockton and Bertha Shaw. She is also survived by her beloved cat Spooky, and many nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for the care given by Delaware Hospice.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 30, at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Ave., Cape May Court House, N.J., where viewing will begin at noon. Interment will be in Goshen Methodist Cemetery, Goshen, N.J.

Dorothy J. Horsey, retired bartender
Dorothy J. Horsey, 83 of Lewes, passed away Friday, May 22, 2009, at home, after a courageous fight with a long illness.
Born Oct. 11, 1925, in Wilmington, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Margaret McCullen and Dennis McCormick. Dorothy was previously employed at the Five Point Lounge in Richardson Park for over 18 years. After retiring Dorothy relocated to Millsboro, where she continued to tend bar at the VFW 7447 in Rehoboth Beach. She later tended bar at the American Legion Post 5 in Rehoboth. Dorothy was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary Diamond State Post 2863 for 50 years. She was also a member of the American Legion Post 5 Ladies Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Frank Horsey. Dorothy is survived by her three daughters, Marcia Crouchelli of Wilmington, Janet Palese of Bear and Gayle Dupras of Lewes; and her two sons, Andrew K. Palese Jr. and his wife Kathy of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Robert Palese of Newark. Proud accomplishments are her nine grandsons and her 10 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staffs of the Dialysis Center of Rehoboth Beach and Delaware Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 29, in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 2431 Frazer Road, Newark, where friends are invited to a visitation after 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at 2 p.m., in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear. Robert Groll, retired jeweler
Robert Groll, 82, a native Delawarean, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Wilmington Hospital after an extended illness.
Bob was born in Wilmington and lived there all his life. For the last 10 years he and his wife Alene wintered in Scottsdale, Ariz., and over the years they traveled abroad extensively. Bob and Alene celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January 2009, in Scottsdale.
He was a World War II Navy veteran where he served as a fire controlman in the Pacific. Bob retired from his jewelry business, Harris and Groll Inc., in 1989 and worked part-time at Harris Jewelers for 10 years thereafter. A member of the Shriners and Masons for 60 years, and a longtime member of the Jewish War Veterans, Bob volunteered at the Jewish Federation of Delaware for several years.
He was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed playing cards and board games, gardening and reading about historical figures. He loved to entertain friends and family. Bob had a keen sense of humor and relished his time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Fannie Groll; and his sister, Judith Groll Wilkes. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alene Goldenberg Groll; son, Jerry (Connie) of Lewes; daughter, Patti (Steven) Rosenberg of Arlington, Va.; daughter, Andrea (Jeffrey) Solge of Hockessin; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Congregation Beth Emeth, Wilmington, followed by interment at the Jewish Community Cemetery on Foulk Road.

Jacklyn Berner-Smith, loving mother
Jacklyn Rose Berner-Smith, 26, of Laurel, passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 22, 2009, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford.
Jackie was a loving mother, daughter and sister; she was a beautiful young woman with a lot to offer but no time left to give it.
She is survived by three children, Jennifer Alexis Berner, Aaron Damian Smith and Jasmine Marciano; a brother, Walter F. Berner; her mother Teresa Berner and her boyfriend Thomas Toy; her husband, Damian Smith; her mother-in-law and friend, Bonnie Smith; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends of the Berner, Smith and Marciano families. She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Marciano.
Services for Jackie were held at the Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro. Interment was private.

Michael R. Monahan, resort server
Michael Robert Monahan, 57, of Lewes, formerly of Ellenville, N.Y., passed away peacefully at his residence Tuesday, May 26, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Robert and Gladys Monahan.
Michael moved to Lewes in 1981 to work with his lifelong friend John Dileo at Casa Dileo. Michael has made many friends in his life, working as a bartender and waiter at several local restaurants: Potpourri, Captain's Table and Adriatico.
Michael enjoyed life to the fullest, especially cooking and entertaining friends and family in his home.
He appreciated music and took pleasure in going to concerts throughout his life.
An avid sports fan, Michael watched and played baseball and basketball and often cheered for his favorite team the New York Yankees. A devout Catholic, Michael served as an altar boy as a child and remained faithful to the church.
In addition of his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Sean Timothy Monahan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Connie Monahan; her sons, William Wright Jr. and Charles Hazel III and wife Nikki and their children, Morgan and Lincoln; beloved sister Patty Allison and husband Carl of Ellenville; beloved uncle of Tracey Hussey and husband Arthur and their daughter Jessica; Kevin Leland and wife Peggy and their children Julia and Gregory; Christopher Allison and wife Kristalyn and their son Austin; Scott Allison and wife Erin and their son Evelyn; Jeffrey Allison and wife Donielle and their daughters Reagan and Alexandra; Robin Allison and her children Kirk and Katherine; Kerri Layton and Troy Reese and their children, R.T. and L.J.; good friends: Debbie Lambert and husband Jack and their daughter Kaitlin; George Walsh and wife Carmin; John Dileo and Kara Miele; John Theobar; and Jimmy Broadhurst.
The family would like to especially thank niece Kerri Layton for her dedication and patience during Michael's final days.

Richard N. Crone, retired officer
Richard N. Crone, 76, of Bay Colony, Dagsboro, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Born in Nebraska, he taught physics in Nebraska and Virginia before joining NASA. Dick was the public affairs officer at Goddard Space Flight Center. In retirement, he belonged to the Fenwick Island Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife Fifi; sons Erik Crone of Pateley Bridge, United Kingdom, and Steven and wife Gretchen Crone of Chicago, Ill.; Ron and wife Lora Snider of Richmond, Ky.; and Jeff and wife Tena Snider of Fredericksburg, Va. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Entombment will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 2, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Clarksville.
