Katherine L. Blades, VFW past president
Katherine Louise Wolf Blades, 84, of Millsboro, formerly of Millville, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 27, 2009, surrounded by her loving family at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. Mrs. Blades was born July 18, 1924, in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late William Andrew and Katherine Diese Wolf.
Katherine was the past president and a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary Mason Dixon VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View. Mrs. Blades was also a member of the Frankford United Methodist Church in Frankford.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, George M. Blades; five sons, Norman W. Blades and his wife Kathy of Orange, Calif., Timothy M. Blades and his wife Vikki of Millsboro, Michael G. Blades and his wife Nadine of Dagsboro, Stephen N. Blades and his fiancé Connie of Williamsville, and Dennis J. Blades and his wife Karen of Bethany Beach; two daughters, M. Susan Knox and her husband Roger of Millville, and Patricia A. Blades of Dagsboro; her faithful companion and dog, Beau; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and her sister Margaret S. Banks of Wilmington.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 2, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford, where friends and family may call after noon.
A memorial service will also be held by the VFW 7234 Ladies Auxiliary prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Katherine’s name to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market St. Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106; or since Katherine was a survivor of breast cancer, donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.

Belva Townsend, talented homemaker
Belva Quillen Townsend, 84, of Ocean View, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 25, 2009, after a valiant struggle with cancer.
Mrs. Townsend was born June 25, 1925, in Frankford, daughter of the late Orville and Blanche Quillen. She attended Blackwater Fellowship Church near Frankford and was a good homemaker.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Louis G. Townsend in 2003.
She is survived by a son, Barry Townsend and his wife Dee of Frankford; a daughter, Janet Cooper and her husband Jack of Millville; three grandchildren, Tracy Hurley, Jill Dixon and Guy Cooper; four great-grandchildren, LJ Dixon, Shawn Hurley, Nate Cooper and Braxton Cooper. She is also survived by her brother, Elmer Quillen and his wife Marion of Delmar; and three sisters, Linda Cresmer of Rehoboth Beach, Norma Daisey of Georgetown, and Ruth Davidson of Dagsboro.
A funeral service was held Sunday, June 28, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford. Interment will be at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Belva’s name to Blackwater Fellowship Church, 34478 Roxana Road, Frankford, DE 19945.

Ernest C. King, retired instructor
Ernest C. King, 76, of Georgetown, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. Mr. King had retired as an operations instructor after over 38 years’ service with the San Diego California Transit System.
He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a member of the VFW. He was born Aug. 22, 1932, in Georgetown, son of the late John L. King and Eva E. Moore King.
He is survived by one son, Ernest Sweep King of Georgetown; brother Donald M. King of Seaford; sisters Rebecca King of Bear, Esther King of Delmar, Md., Rachel King Thomas of Seaford, and Ruth King Townsend of Laurel; and grandson Paris King of California. He was also predeceased by siblings Charles W. Baker, David King, Peter King, John King, Thomas King and Evelyn King.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 North Bedford St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour prior.
Burial will be at Cokesbury Cemetery, near Georgetown.

Robert Kevin Russell Jr., U.S. Army veteran
Robert Kevin Russell Jr., 29, of Harrington, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Bayhealth Medical Center, Milford Memorial Hospital. Born in Seaford, he was the son of Robert K. Russell Sr. of Ellendale and Debra Benton Richardson of Eden, Md. He was a technician for Comcast in Georgetown. He was an Army veteran and member of Nanticoke Post 6 American Legion in Seaford.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Linda Maye Russell of Ellendale; stepfather, Daniel Richardson Sr. of Eden, Md.; a daughter, Audrey Marie Russell of Ellendale; stepbrothers, Justin Richardson of Eden, Daniel Richardson Jr. of Fredericksburg, Va.; stepsisters, Amy Reed and husband Chad of Milford, Michelle Hall of Richmond, Va., Laurie Anderson of Baltimore, Md., Julie Hicks of Bardstown, Ky.; grandfather, John Russell Sr. of Bridgeville; grandmother, Beatrice Russell of Ellendale; nephews, Cohen and Tyler Reed; his girlfriend, McKenzie Fleetwood of Harrington; and uncles John and Mark Russell and their families.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Dolores German; and grandfather, Jack Benton.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 30, in Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford. Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery, Bridgeville.

A memorial service for Elsie Beebe Swezey will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 30, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes.
Interment is private at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes.
