Donald G. Carodiskey, retired clarinetist
Donald George Carodiskey, 73, of Lewes, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born Sept. 6, 1935, in Danville, Pa., son of the late George and Thelma (Putnam) Carodiskey.
Donald attended the Valley Forge Military Academy on a music scholarship, graduating in 1955. In July of that year he was accepted as a clarinetist in the “President’s Own” U.S. Marine Corps Band in Washington, D.C., where he served for 30 years, retiring in 1985. While serving in the band, he taught clarinet and saxophone to many young students. He was a competitive tennis player and later on an avid golfer. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 4-year-old son, George, in 1964. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Geraldine “Dolly” Carodiskey; a daughter Susan Carodiskey and husband David Braziel; a son Steven Joseph Carodiskey; a daughter Diane Michele Carodiskey; a grandson Jonathan Price; and two great-grandchildren.
A Committal Service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 9, in the chapel at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. Interment will follow. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Donald’s name to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Robert ‘Bob’ Hazel Sr., law enforcer
Robert “Bob” F. Hazel Sr, 82, of Eden, Md. died Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
He was born June 4, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of the late John Henry Hazel and Eunice Ann Hazel.
After school Bob served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Greenwood during World War II. He was a past member of the VFW Post 8276, Delmar, a member of VFW Post 194, Salisbury, and the Salisbury Moose Lodge. His work in law enforcement and security was his passion. His various positions include security officer at Campbell’s Soup, part-time deputy for the Wicomico Sheriff’s Department, where he worked many years, officer for the Delmar Police Department, security for the Wicomico County Courthouse and auxiliary officer for the Delaware State Police.
Bob was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church in Columbia, Md. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, trips to the beach and watching wildlife on the family farm. He cherished memories made on his many camping trips with his late wife, Nancy.
He is survived by two sons, Robert F. Hazel Jr. and his wife, Kimberly of Laurel and William K. Hazel and his wife, Sharon of Delmar; two daughters, Joy Baker and her husband, Keith of Delmar and Tammy Harris and her husband, Jim of Hebron; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; his faithful companion, Audrey Pollek of Eden; and three brothers, Jack Hazel of New Port Richey, Fla., David Hazel of Pittsville, Md. and Melvin Hazel of Delmar. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Beach Hazel, who passed in 1994; a sister, Carol Hazel Adams; and two brothers, Richard Hazel and Joseph Hazel.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, at Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove St., Delmar, where family and friends may call at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.

James ‘Spike’ Cannon, dedicated Catholic
James Edward “Spike” Cannon, 76, a native of New Castle and resident of Dewey Beach, died Thursday, July 2, 2009.
Spike retired from All American Engineering Company. He was a member of Sussex Pines Golf Club and St. Edmond’s Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army. Spike was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was dedicated to his Catholic faith and had a lifelong commitment to participating in the celebration of the Mass. He was an avid reader, boater and traveler.
Spike was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace L. and Marie Cannon of New Castle. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann (Weer); his children, Karen Marie and her husband Hal, Susan Lynn and her husband Ed, James E. Cannon Jr. and his wife Crissy; two brothers, Wallace and Jerome; six sisters, Jean, Marie “Sis,” Connie, Helen, Elaine and Crissy; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 5th and Harmony streets, New Castle at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 7. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

Richard E. Samworth, Eagle Scout
Richard E. Samworth, 78, of Bethany Beach, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009.
He was born in Wilmington in 1931 and graduated from Wilmington High School. He was a counselor at Camp Rodney and an Eagle Scout. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Delaware then volunteered for a two-year service in the U.S. Army where he rose to the rank of sergeant first class.
After earning his master’s degree in education from the University of Delaware, he began a long and successful career in vocational rehabilitation work with the handicapped. He started in individual client counseling and rose to the level of deputy director of vocational rehabilitation for the state of Delaware.
He retired from the state to become director of development of Kent-Sussex Industries Inc., where he continued his lifelong service to the handicapped. His passions included spending time with his family, sailing, baseball, especially the Phillies, listening to jazz and swimming at the beach.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Elisabeth Samworth. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Audrey Wallace Samworth; his two sons and their wives, David and Barbara Samworth of Waltham, Maine and Mark and Katherine Samworth of Wilmington; one sister, Betty Truett of San Diego, Calif.; two granddaughters, Melissa Samworth and Julia Samworth; two granddogs, Kelly and Rusty; and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 8, at St. Martha’s Episcopal Church in Bethany Beach. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Lower Brandywine Cemetery, 117 Old Kennett Road in Wilmington.

Walter ‘Hickey’ Luff, truck operator
Walker “Hickey” Luff, 85, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Courtland Manor Nursing Home, Dover, where he had resided for the last year.
He was born Jan. 21, 1924, in Dover, son of the late Harvey and Anna (Glanden) Luff. Hickey was an independent truck owner/operator for many years, until his retirement at the age of 70 due to illness. He enjoyed watching the Philadelphia Phillies, heavyweight wrestling and was a NASCAR fan, especially Jeff Gordon.
He also loved a chew of tobacco. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marianna Gourley Luff; a son, Donald J. Luff; and siblings, Albert, Jack, Bill, Flossie, Dorothy, Anna and Edith.
He is survived by four children, Jimmy Luff of Marydel, Donna “Fay” Dolan of Dover, Greg Luff of Milton, and Jeff Luff and his wife Tina of Marydel; a sister, Frances “Minny” Downs of Dover; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Kathryn V. Bickling, retired bookkeeper
Kathryn Voshell Bickling, 80, of Pinnacale Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center, Smyrna, entered the Kingdom of Heaven Tuesday, June 30, 2009, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born Kathryn Marie Voshell Jan. 29, 1929, she was the fourth child to the late Luther Arthur and Sadie Reed Voshell, at Chapeltown Corner, Marydel. Ms. Bickling was a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School, class of 1947, after which she began a long career as a bookkeeper. She retired from Delaware Auto Sales of Dover in 2000, after more than 30 years.
She attended Wyoming United Methodist Church, until her illness in 2001. She was a loving mother and grandmother, devoted sister and aunt, and a true friend to many.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Bickling was preceded in death by a son, Dr. J. Allan Bickling in 2005; two brothers, Grover C. Voshell in 2005 and his wife Grace in 1991, and Kline C. Voshell in 1976; a sister, Elizabeth A. Seaman in 1990, and her husband Willis Sr. in 1992; and her former husband, James Abey Bickling in 1995.
She is survived by a son, Timothy L. Bickling and his wife Dee of Elkton, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn S. Bickling of Lewes; a brother, Roy J. and sister-in-law, Evelyn Voshell, of Dover; four grandchildren, Enid Bickling-Kelley and her husband Joshua of Delmar, Md., Matthew C. Bickling of Elkton, James L. Bickling of Elkton, and Keith Lockard of Elkton; a great-nephew, to whom she was especially close, Willis J. Seaman III, and his family of Dover; along with many other nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of her life was held at Wyoming United Methodist Church, Wyoming. Burial was at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. Arrangements by Trader Funeral Home, Dover.

Violet L. McGinnis, retired supervisor
Violet L. McGinnis, 96, passed away Friday, July 3, 2009, in the Silver Lake Center, Dover.
Mrs. McGinnis was born April 7, 1913 in Dover, the daughter of the late Denny and Edith Shorts Dickerson.
She worked as a floor supervisor for International Playtex in Dover for 32 years before retirement. Mrs. McGinnis was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna and a life member of Citizens Hose Company 1 Ladies Auxiliary. Her favorite hobbies included camping and traveling.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin R. McGinnis. Mrs. McGinnis is survived by a son, Frank R. McGinnis and his wife Betty Ann of Rehoboth Beach; three grandchildren, Dawn Carpenter, Kelly Summers and Donna Gregory; and six great-grandchildren, Brittany Carpenter, Brandon McGinnis, Jalen and Lauren Summers, and Michael and Victoria Gregory.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Wilma ‘Bunny’ Cook, amazing homemaker,
Wilma “Bunny” J. Cook, 72, of Slaughter Beach, passed away Monday, June 29, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.
She was born May 19, 1937, in Somerville, Ohio, to the late John and Mary Gardner Parker. Bunny grew up in Ohio and Tennessee and comes from a large family.
She was a private nurse until she married and then was an amazing homemaker and the best mom anyone could ever hope to have.
She loved to can her own fruits, vegetables, jellies and jams.
She cooked incredible meals and the greatest chocolate cake around. She had a big heart and an outrageous sense of humor. Bunny was a member of the Cedar Neck Church. She is loved and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Janet Cope; brother-in-law, James Cook; and father-in-law, Woodrow Brusewitz. She is survived by husband, Gene Cook of Slaughter Beach; daughter and her husband, Susan “Kissy” and Stephen Lee; son, Rob Cook; sisters, Laura and husband Virg Schaeffer, Linda and husband Billy Hogg, and Helen Parker-Bragg; brother-in-law, Charlie Cope; brothers, Mack and wife Pat Parker, and Dick and wife Joyce Parker; mother-in-law, Lura Mae Brusewitz; brother-in-law and his wife, Jerry and Phyllis Cook; sister-in-law, Shirley Perez; sister-in-law and her husband, Nan and Ralph Miller; brother-in-law and his wife, Don and Linda Linder; daughters of the heart, Karen Waddingham and Su Chafin; granddog, Cassidy Rae Lee; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly.
Memorial services were held at Cedar Neck Church in Slaughter Beach, with Pastor Steve Peterman officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Delaware Hospice Inc., 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Rita A. Love, Lewes resident
Rita A. Adamucci Love of Lewes and formerly of Haddon Township, N.J., died Monday, July 6, 2009.
She was the wife of the late Andrew R. Love. She is the mother of Robert and Ronald Love. She is also survived by six grandchildren and a brother, Michael Adamucci.
Services and interment are private. Contributions made in her name to Beebe Medical Center, 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958 would be appreciated.

Dolly E. Mickel, bait and tackle owner
Dolly E. Mickel, 82, of Lewes, passed away Friday, July 3, 2009, at the Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
She was born in Reading, Pa., March 18, 1927, daughter of the late Howard and Lillian Zohner.
Mrs. Mickel owned Dolly’s Bait and Tackle at the foot of the Love Creek Bridge in Lewes for 10 years, beginning in the middle 1960s. Customers came from as far as Philadelphia to purchase fresh clams from the gregarious businesswoman. A professional softball pitcher, she signed a contract with the Women’s All-American League in Kenosha, Wis., and played for years in Reading.
Her husband Harry F. Mickel preceded her in death.
She is survived by three sons, Ronald L. VanSciver of Hollywood, Fla., James H. VanSciver of Salisbury, Md., and Gary VanSciver of Lewes; and a daughter, Holly L. VanSciver of Lewes. She was given custody of and raised a baby granddaughter, Katie VanSciver, now living in Charlottesville, Va. She also has five additional grandchildren, Gary VanSciver of Lewes, Ryan VanSciver of Baltimore, Md., Lindsay VanSciver of Columbus, Ohio, Shane VanSciver of Baltimore and Clint VanSciver of Salisbury.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 11, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call after 12:30 p.m. Interment will be private.
