Littleton P. Mitchell, NAACP president
Littleton Purnell Mitchell, 90, died at Christiana Hospital Monday, July 6, 2009.
“Lit” as he was affectionately known, was born Nov. 27, 1918, to Littleton V. Mitchell and Helen A. Mitchell in Milford. He attended the Milford Colored School until eighth grade. He then attended Howard High School which was the only high school for African-American students in the state of Delaware and graduated from Howard High School in 1939. After two years at West Chester State College, Littleton enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and served in Tuskegee, Ala., as a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. When he was discharged from the army in 1946, Littleton returned to West Chester State College and completed his bachelor of science degree.
Littleton married his high school sweetheart, Jane Watson Mitchell in 1943. They made their home in Delaware City where they raised their son Philip. Littleton spent his entire career as a teacher/counselor at the Governor Bacon Health Center in Delaware City and was the first African-American teacher to instruct white students. He retired in 1984.
Littleton also worshiped in Delaware City, where he was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church.
From 1961 to 1991, Littleton served as president of the Delaware branch of the NAACP, battling for the equal rights of African Americans and other disenfranchised people in the state.
He is most notably remembered for his tireless efforts to change the conditions of migrant workers. Littleton also served on the Delaware Humanities Forum from 1991-97. And, in 2005, he served on the Brown v. Board of Education 50th Anniversary Commission as a presidential appointee representing Delaware.
Littleton has received numerous awards and citations including the Region II NAACP Gloster B. Current Medal of Achievement, West Chester University Distinguished Achievement Award, 1999 West Chester University President’s Medallion for Service, University of Delaware Medal of Merit, Delaware State Education Association Human and Civil Rights Award, Delaware Bar Association’s 2004 Liberty Bell Award, AARP Delaware 2008 Andrus Award and the Congressional Medal for service as a Tuskegee Airman. In 2008, Delaware Technical & Community College established the Littleton and Jane Mitchell Scholarship to be awarded annually to a nursing student.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jane; sisters Phyllis and Angelina; and brother Kenny. He is survived by his son Philip Mitchell and his wife Ernestine; sisters-in-law Arlene Watson and Elaine Harris; brothers-in-law Gene Watson and Dr. Woodrow Wilson; cousins Helen Streett, Grace McKensie, Sharon Wright, Andre Wright, Andre Wright Jr., Sheila Streett and Howard Streett.
A service honoring Littleton’s contributions to the community will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 14, at the University of Delaware’s Mitchell Hall, located at the intersection of South College and Amstel avenues, Newark. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 15, at the Christ Episcopal Church, Third and Clinton Streets, Delaware City.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 19, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 300 North St., Milford.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Littleton and Jane Mitchell Fellows Program, in care of the Delaware Community Foundation, Box 1636, Wilmington, DE 19899.

Cheryl Brice Moore, Phillips manager
Cheryl Brice Moore, 47, of Ocean City, Md., was welcomed into Heaven by Nana and the Lord Sunday, July 5, 2009.
For over 22 years, Cheryl was an office manager for Phillips Crab House at 141st Street, Ocean City.
Kind in spirit, dedicated to the love of her life, Bruce, and her family of associates at Phillips, she was innately talented, inordinately bright and generous to a fault. She graduated from Indian River High School in 1980 with honors and received her associate in arts degree from Delaware Technical & Community College in 1982, also with honors.
She enjoyed working with her hands, creating lovely shell artistry and crochet work.
She is survived by her beloved companion of many years, Bruce Holland; her mother, Maxine McWhorter Ungerbuehler; stepfather, Chuck Ungerbuehler; father, Charles H. Brice III; stepmother, Joanne Brice; sister, Bette Ann Brice of Brasure, Md., and her husband Darrell E. Brasure; and a brother, Shane M. Brice.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harold Meeds McWhorter and Helen Ball McWhorter, Mary Rambo Brice Fischetti and Charles H. Brice II; and her niece, Nicole Elizabeth Brasure.
These words so aptly describe Cheryl’s love for her companion: “I wish for you a life of one hundred years; and, for myself, one hundred years less one day, for my life is with you.”
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 10, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St. in Frankford, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Christ Church of Milford Churchyard Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Cheryl’s memory to Bear Hugs for Babies, 20200 Coastal Highway, Suite 196A, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.

Linda Spencer, ad representative
Linda Spencer, 58, of Georgetown, passed away Sunday, July 12, 2009, in her home.
Linda was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and moved to her home in Georgetown about 10 years ago.
She was an advertising representative for a local company that distributed placemats, advertised on by many local businesses, to area restaurants. Linda was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served for 21 years.
Several close friends survive her.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, July 16, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after 5 p.m.

William C. Winstead, insurance retiree
William C. Winstead, 81, of Bethany Beach, formerly of Washington, D.C., died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at his home of an apparent heart attack.
He was born Aug. 5, 1927, in Washington, D.C., and attended Anacostia High School. He joined the Navy in April 1945 and served in the Philippines.
He lived in Washington and Arlington, Va., and worked for Hartford Insurance Group in Washington and Alexandria, Va,. for 38 years. He retired in 1988 and moved to Bethany Beach in 1989.
Mr. Winstead was a member of the Fenwick Island Lions Club and the South Coastal AARP.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Viola Gibbons Winstead. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Jean D. Winstead of Bethany Beach; a son Russell Winstead of Village of Lakewood, Ill.; a daughter Barbara W. Osborn of Maumelle, Ariz; five grandchildren, Tracy Osborn of Iowa City, Iowa, Kelly Khan of Houston, Texas, Michael Osborn of Little Rock, Ark., Katherine Winstead of Laurel, Md., and Rebecca Winstead of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and a 2-month-old great-granddaughter Anniyah Khan of Houston, Texas.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 14, in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10301 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, Md. Interment will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
