Frederick “Sonny” Karl, active church member
Frederick “Sonny” Stephen Thiel Karl, 81, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away peacefully at his residence Monday, July 20, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Feb. 24, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wis., son of the late Ralph Englebert Karl and Hedwig Gross Karl.
The family moved to Baltimore, Md., in 1937 and lived in Catonsville until June 1946. Fred attended Mount St. Joseph High School. After graduation in 1946, he moved to Lewes. In 1947, he was employed as a motor boat operator for the Delaware Pilots Association. In 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served with the 101st Airborne Division as a cook; he was later stationed in Manheim, Germany. He did his basic training in Breckenridge, Ky.
In 1956, Fred opened the Pure Oil service station on Rehoboth Avenue. He joined the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company in 1963, serving as president in 1977 and 1978 and as chaplain since 1980. From 1986 to 1993, he was the ambulance captain, and he was a life member of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company.
Fred became a member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church in 1946. He was a two-term president of the parish council and was a fourth-degree knight with the Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council 7297. He was an usher and a Eucharistic minister for many years. He also drove the school bus for St. Edmond’s school.
In 1966, Fred was the proud recipient of the Mae Hall McCabe Memorial Award for community service. In 2006, he received the Order of Merit for Outstanding Contributions to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anna Jaschke Karl; and three children, Heidi Karl Fuller, Ralph E. Karl and Theresa Karl Thomas, all of Rehoboth Beach. He is also the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Joshua Aaron Fuller, Elijah Adrian Fuller, Zebulon Steven Thomas, Carey Anna Karl, Stephanie Alicia Karl and Thaddeus Ralph Karl.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 28, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, King Charles Avenue and Laurel Street, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call one hour prior to services in the church. Interment with full fireman’s and military honors will be at Henlopen Memorial Park, Route 1, Milton.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 327, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971; to St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, King Charles Avenue and Laurel Street, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971; or to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963. George F. Zutell, retired busnessman
George F. Zutell, 83, of Millsboro, formerly of York, Pa., passed away Friday, July 24, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Zutell was born Oct. 14, 1925, in York, son of the late Edward and Elva (Altland) Zutell. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. George was a partner of the George F. Kelly Company in York for over 40 years before retiring in 1988. He was deeply devoted to his family and in his spare time enjoyed working in his yard. Mr. Zutell was a past volunteer fireman with the Rescue Fire Company in York and a member of the American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Anna (Kelly) Zutell; three daughters, Victoria Kilgore of Millsboro, Elva Lee Holtzapple and her husband Terry of Coudersport, Pa., and Brenda Falkler and her husband Jim of Georgia; five grandchildren, Virginia Kilgore, Dennis Kilgore Jr., Jason Holtzapple, Leanne Livingston and Rebecca Falkler; six great-grandchildren, Tabitha Brennan, Aren Snell, Zachary Druck, Alyssa Druck, Austin Holtzapple and Ryder Livingston; two great-great-grandsons, Maddon Brennan and Braydon Druck; and a sister, Yvonne Zutell of York.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 30, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 9:30 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in George’s name to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Harold Bogie, retired business owner
Harold Bogie, 92, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at home. He was born July 13, 1917, in Boston, Mass., son of the late Achilles and Olga Romonyshyn Bogie.
He was a retired entrepreneur and business owner in the manufacturing industry.
He was a graduate of Boston University and was a distinguished World War II veteran, serving as a pilot in the Air Force, and was shot down over Hungary and held as a prisoner of war. He was a successful businessman, and after retiring became a volunteer for his Bahai religion as an auxiliary board member in Greece for many years. He returned to the United States, settling in Delaware, and continued volunteer work as an ambulance driver, and served as captain and post commander for the VFW Post 7244. He also served the Department of Justice, Attorney General’s Office, volunteering as a senior law officer and senior victim advocate and was president of R.E.F.O.R.M. He was past president of the Woodlands of Millsboro Homeowner’s Association.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Arline Turcott Bogie; two sons, Peter Bogie and his wife Arlene of West Roxbury, Mass., and David Alexander of Manhattan, N.Y.; one daughter, Patricia Denning, of Rosendale, Mass.; a sister, Rene Randazo of Hyde Park, Mass.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He leaves behind a host of extended family and friends across the world.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 29, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

William H. Casperson, retired pipefitter
William H. Casperson, 89, of Lewes, formerly of Claymont, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Etha Mae Howard Casperson with whom he shared 66 years of marriage.
Born in Marcus Hook, Pa., he was the son of the late Sam and Mary Peters Casperson. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne, where he was a three-time Purple Heart recipient, member of Groome United Methodist Church, the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7447, Rehoboth, and the Claymont Fire Company. He was employed as a pipefitter for Electric Hose and Rubber and Amtrak before his retirement.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Casperson is survived by his daughters, Etha Hanby and her husband Vernon, Shirley Henderson and her husband John, Nancy Bazela and her husband William; grandchildren, Lisa Holt, Terri Vaughn, Will Bazela, Laurie Conway and Jessica Bazela; great-grandchildren, Robbie, Taylor and Faythe Holt, Maggie Vaughn and Hanna Conway; and nephew, Robert Wright.
The family wishes to thank Latrina, Diane and Jack of Delaware Hospice for their devoted care.
Services were held at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont. Interment was at Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, Pa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.

Alton B. Bradley, retired postman
Alton Benjamin Bradley, born Oct. 7, 1921, in Greenwood, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, July 22, 2009, with his wife of 61 years, Olivia Godwin Bradley, by his side.
He died peacefully at Crystal Bluffs in Morehead City, N.C., where he had lived since February 2009.
After retiring from 30 years in the U.S. Army in 1970, he and his wife Olivia chose to retire to the state of Florida where they resided for many years. While in Florida he worked as a postman in the St. Petersburg, Fla. area for 12 years.
During his Army career he served in the European Theatre, the French Embassy and Vietnam. His service to his country included serving as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division in Germany, the 82nd Airborne Division based out of Ft. Bragg, N.C., the 504th Airborne Infantry based out of Ft. Bragg, and the 187th Airborne Combat Team serving in Japan. He enjoyed golf, fishing and taxidermy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Davis Bradley and Mary Elizabeth Rickards. Surviving are two brothers, Charles Rickards of Milford and George Bradley of Fayetteville, Ark.; two sisters, Phyllis Clifton of Milton and Jean Bradley Wilson of Wilmington; nieces and nephews, Cynthia Murray, Robert Bradley, Susan Popisil, Joe Wilson, Charlene Bradley, Albert Rickards III, Ron Rickards, Mary Lisa Gede, Robert C. Clifton, Richard Clifton and Belinda Burton.
Funeral services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with the Rev. William Hopkins officiating. Interment with full military honors followed at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Charles E. Davis, business owner
Charles E. Davis, 81, of Harbeson, died Friday, July 24, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center.
Born March 5, 1928, in Millsboro, son of the late William J. and Charlottie Rust Davis, he was owner and operator of his own electrical and plumbing business. He was a Mason, past member of Millsboro Fire Company, member of the Sussex County Electrical Contractors Association, former member of the Delaware State Board of Electrical Examiners and past member of the Athletic Council of Millsboro High School. He loved birds and flowers, and was a practical joker. He was an avid Standardbred horseman, and an excellent electrician.
He is survived by his children, Glenn Davis and his wife Shirley of Millsboro; Nancy Davis of Millsboro; Gary Davis and his wife Susie of Milford; Kitty Young and her husband Jay of Lewes; Jackie Shockley and her husband Preston of Lewes; Bobbie Mauer and her husband Erich of Roanoke, Va.; 15 grandchildren Tammy, Dawn, Shawn, Chad, Stacey, Scott, Mindi, Gavin, Katie, Brian, Sara, Dusty, Kristie, Cole and Amanda. He has 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, William J. Davis Jr. of Millsboro. He was preceded by his wife, Gloria Williams Davis, on Aug. 10, 2008.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior for visitation. The Rev. Ed Wilkins is officiating. Interment will be in Millsboro Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
